The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research. The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: Part I of 34/08 addressed the potential correlation between the mediums’ phenomenology and the accuracy of their readings. Directly after each of two test readings for paired discarnates, 19 claimant mediums completed the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI). The dimensions of Anger, Sadness, and Negative Affect were significantly positively correlated with Accuracy Scores. In addition, Sadness and Altered Time Sense were significantly positively correlated with the Global Difference Score (a measure of specificity). Conversely, Self-Awareness was significantly negatively correlated with the Global Difference Score. Part II of the study addressed the following hypothesis: Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) can report accurate and specific information about discarnates using anomalous information reception (AIR); that is, without any prior knowledge about the discarnates or sitters, in the absence of any sensory feedback, and without using deceptive means. Each of eight WCRMs performed two quintuple-blind readings for two blinded and absent sitters. In 11 of 12 returned readings, sitters chose the intended vs. control reading as their own (p=.003; one-tailed). The mean Global and Percent Accuracy scores given by sitters for whom readings were intended were significantly higher than those scores given by sitters for whom the readings were not intended (3.4 and 54% vs. 2.0 and 33%, respectively; F(2, 21) = 4.52, p=.02). The effect sizes determined for whole-reading and item-by-item scores were both large (d=1.07 and 1.20, respectively).

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: Qualitative research has indicated that mediums’ experiences during mediumship readings for the deceased are distinguishable from their experiences during psychic readings for the living. This study employed the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI), a standard retrospective analysis tool that quantitatively measures 26 phenomenological dimensions, to assess the experiences of 10 Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) during double-blind readings for living targets and deceased targets. During 19 of 20 readings, the WCRM stated her impressions regarding the status of the named target (living or deceased). In 14 of those cases, the WCRM’s impressions accurately reflected the status (74%, p = 0.032). In addition, six of the WCRMs were able to accurately determine the status of the targets in both of their readings. It should be noted that the WCRMs were instructed that each target could be living or deceased. A significant difference was seen between the living target condition and the deceased target condition for the dimension Love with higher scores in the deceased reading condition (p < 0.05). In the subset of six WCRMs who accurately determined the status of the targets, significantly higher intensity values were seen for readings for deceased targets (vs. readings for living targets) for the dimensions Positive affect, Joy, and Love (all p < 0.05). These quantitative data collected under blinded conditions reflect the WCRMs’ qualitative descriptions of the differences between communication with the deceased and acquisition of psychic information and provide further evidence distinguishing between survival psi and somatic psi.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: For Grant 34/08, Part II of the study addressed the following hypothesis: Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) can report accurate and specific information about the deceased loved ones (termed discarnates) of living people (termed sitters) using anomalous information reception (AIR); that is, without any prior knowledge about the discarnates or sitters, in the absence of any sensory feedback, and without using deceptive means. Objectives: The research question this study addressed was: Is there a difference between accuracy scores given to readings by the sitters for whom the readings were intended and the scores given to those readings by sitters for whom the readings were not intended? Methods: Each of eight WCRMs performed two quintuple-blind readings for two absent sitters. The associated sitters then scored each of the readings for accuracy without knowing which was which. Results: Twelve of the eight WCRMs’ 16 readings were returned by the sitter-raters for analysis. Eleven of 12 sitters chose the intended vs. control reading as their own when asked to make a choice (p = 0.003; one-tailed). The mean Global and Percent Accuracy scores given by sitters for whom readings were intended were significantly higher than those scores given by sitters for whom the readings were not intended (3.4 and 54% vs. 2.0 and 33%, respectively; F(2, 21) = 4.52, p = 0.02). In addition, the effect sizes determined for whole-reading and item-by-item scores were both large (Cohen’s d = 1.07 and 1.20, respectively). Finally, the statistic prep (the probability of replicating the direction of the effect) was found to be high for both types of accuracy scores (0.84 and 0.87, respectively). Conclusions: These data demonstrate that WCRMs can report accurate and specific information about discarnates using AIR. Discussion: The results from this study begin to address the question at the root of mediumship research: Does consciousness survive physical death?

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Previous research has demonstrated that skilled mediums can report accurate and specific information about the deceased loved ones (termed discarnates) of living people (termed sitters) using anomalous information reception (AIR); that is, without any prior knowledge about the discarnates or sitters, in the absence of any sensory feedback, and without using deceptive means. The source of the information obtained using AIR, however, has not been established. The body of proof-focused data collected to date cannot differentiate among (1) super-psi; (2) psychic reservoir models (collectively “somatic psi”) in which mediums use clairvoyance, precognition, and/or telepathy with the living to acquire information about discarnates; and (3) the survival of consciousness hypothesis in which mediums use “survival psi” to communicate telepathically with discarnates. Recent qualitative research, however, indicates that mediums’ subjective experiences during mediumship readings for the deceased are distinguishable from their experiences during psychic readings for the living. In order to further investigate these findings, this study employed the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI), a standard retrospective phenomenological analysis tool that quantitatively measures 26 phenomenological dimensions, to assess the experiences of ten Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) during readings for living targets and readings for deceased targets. During each reading, the medium was given the first name of a target and then asked specific questions about the target (e.g., physical and personality descriptions, hobbies/interests). Both the WCRMs and the experimenter interacting with them were blinded to which targets were living and which were deceased. After each reading, the medium completed the PCI. During 19 of the 20 readings, the WCRM stated her impressions regarding the status of the named target (living or deceased). In 14 of those cases, the WCRM’s impressions accurately reflected the status (74%, binomial probability, one-tailed, p = 0.032). In addition, six of the WCRMs were able to accurately determine the status of the targets in both of their readings. It should be noted that the WCRMs were instructed that the target for each reading could be living or deceased and not that they would be reading one of each type of target. A significant difference was seen between the living target condition and the deceased target condition for the dimension Love with higher scores in the deceased reading condition (living target: 2.65 ± 1.11 vs. deceased target: 3.55 ± 0.55, p < 0.05). In the subset of six WCRMs who accurately determined the status of both targets, significantly higher intensity values were seen for readings for deceased targets ( vs. readings for living targets) for the dimensions Positive affect, Joy, and Love (all p< 0.05). These quantitative data collected under blinded conditions reflect the WCRMs’ qualitative descriptions of the differences between communication with the deceased and acquisition of psychic information and provide further evidence distinguishing between survival psi and somatic psi

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Mediumship research at the Windbridge Institute includes a three-tiered approach to investigations of secular, American mediums. The Information, Operation, and Application research programs examine (i) the accuracy of the mediums’ information; (ii) the mediums’ phenomenology, physiology, and psychology, and (iii) the social applications of mediumship readings, respectively. Studying mediums’ physiology as part of the Operation research program may help in managing medical issues in mediums. An informal survey of Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs) demonstrated that chronic medical problems may be a serious concern for this population. For example, this sample has seven times the incidence of autoimmune disorders compared to the incidence in the general US population. And the incidence of migraines in female WCRMs is nearly two and a half times the prevalence in women in the US. AIM: The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate the biological components of anomalous information reception (AIR; the reporting of accurate and specific information about the deceased in the absence of prior knowledge, feedback, or deceptive means) in these mediums. METHOD: General physiological measures and 28 hematological elements during mediumship readings and a control task were examined. RESULTS: Data collected do not demonstrate any significant changes in these measures when pre- and post-condition comparisons were made for the counter-balanced sessions. CONCLUSIONS: These results imply that the mediumship process itself may not responsible for the increased health issues in this population. We propose an alternative model addressing the relationship between childhood trauma and physical illness.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: CONTEXT The examination of the accuracy and specificity of information reported by mediums addresses the existence of non-local information transfer. OBJECTIVE This study was designed to replicate and extend a previous methodology achieving positive findings regarding the anomalous reception of information about deceased individuals by research mediums under experimental conditions that eliminate conventional explanations, including cold reading, rater bias, experimenter cueing, and fraud. DESIGN Mediumship readings were performed over the phone under blinded conditions in which mediums, raters, and experimenters were all blinded. PARTICIPANTS A total of 20 Windbridge Certified Research Mediums WCRMs participated in 86 readings. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Accuracy and specificity were assessed through item scores, global reading scores, and forced-choice selections provided by blinded sitters. RESULTS (1) Comparisons between blinded target and decoy readings regarding the estimated percentage accuracy of reading items (n = 27, P = .05, d = 0.49), (2) comparisons regarding the calculated percentage accuracy of reading items (n = 31, P = .002, d = 0.75), (3) comparisons regarding hits vs. misses (n = 31, P < .0001 and P = .002 for different reading sections), (4) comparisons regarding global scores (n = 58, P = .001, d = 0.57), and (5) forced-choice reading selections between blinded target and decoy readings (n = 58, P = .01) successfully replicate and extend previous findings demonstrating the phenomenon of anomalous information reception (AIR), the reporting of accurate and specific information without prior knowledge, in the absence of sensory feedback, and without using deceptive means. Because the experimental conditions of this study eliminated normal, sensory sources for the information mediums report, a non-local source (however controversial) remains the most likely explanation for the accuracy and specificity of their statements.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The main research focus at the Windbridge Institute addresses the survival of consciousness hypothesis which postulates that some aspect of consciousness survives the physical death of the brain and the body. The workshop will include discussions of proof- and process-focused studies (both qualitative and quantitative) involving Windbridge Certified Research Mediums (WCRMs), 20 individuals who report experiencing regular communication with the deceased and whose abilities to report accurate and specific nonlocal information have been demonstrated under blinded laboratory conditions which control for all traditional, local, and sensory explanations for the accuracy of their statements. Our discussion of mediumship will also include the implications of the resulting data regarding our understanding of the nature of consciousness (including non-human animal consciousness) and the source of the information mediums report. Finally, we will discuss mediumship as it relates to socially relevant areas such as criminal investigations and grief counseling and recovery. Our survival of consciousness research also includes investigating technologies that may be useful in enhancing interaction and communication with the deceased (i.e., instrumental transcommunication, ITC). We will discuss how we objectively evaluate methods of capturing ITC under highly controlled conditions and attempt to develop practical applications for ITC. The experiential portions of the workshop will include a live demonstration of anomalous information reception by WCRMs Dave Campbell and Joanne Gerber and the attendees using ITC software to attempt to acquire nonlocal, veridical information.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Dissociative states exist on a continuum from nonpathological forms, such as highway hypnosis and day-dreaming, to pathological states of derealization and depersonalization. Claims of communication with deceased individuals, known as mediumship, were once regarded as a pathological form of dissociation, but current definitions recognize the continuum and include distress and functional disability as symptoms of pathology. This study examined the relationship between dissociative symptoms and mediumship in a large convenience sample. METHODS: Secondary analyses of cross-sectional survey data were conducted. The survey included demographics, the Dissociation Experience Scale Taxon (DES-T, score range 0-100), as well as questions about instances of mediumship experiences. Summary statistics and linear and logistic regressions explored the relationship between dissociative symptoms and mediumship endorsement. RESULTS: 3,023 participants were included and were mostly middle-aged (51 years ± 16; range 17-96), female (70%), Caucasian (85%), college educated (88%), had an annual income over $50,000 (55%), and were raised Christian (71%) but were presently described as Spiritual but not Religious (60%). Mediumship experiences were endorsed by 42% of participants, the experiences usually began in childhood (81%), and 53% had family members who reported similar experiences. The mean DES-T score across all participants was 14.4 ± 17.3, with a mean of 18.2 ± 19.3 for those claiming mediumship experiences and 11.8 ± 15.2 for those who did not (t = -10.3, p < 0.0005). The DES-T threshold score for pathological dissociation is 30. CONCLUSIONS: On average, individuals claiming mediumship experiences had higher dissociation scores than non-claimants, but neither group exceeded the DES-T threshold for pathology. Future studies exploring dissociative differences between these groups may benefit from using more comprehensive measures of dissociative symptoms as well as assessments of functional impairment, which would help in discerning between pathological and non-pathological aspects of these experiences.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: CONTEXT Modern research with mediums—individuals who regularly experience and report communication from the deceased—includes investigations of mediums’ accuracy, psychology, phenomenology, and electrophysiology and the therapeutic potential of mediumship readings for the bereaved. Anecdotal reports imply that chronic medical problems may be a serious concern for mediums. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was two-fold: (I) to systematically investigate the hematological and psychophysiological correlates of anomalous information reception (AIR, the reporting of accurate and specific information about the deceased in the absence of prior knowledge, feedback, or deceptive means) and (II) to compare the reported health issues of mediums and non-mediums. DESING (I) A repeated-measures design in which mediums engaged in blinded mediumship readings and a control condition was used. (II) A parallel-groups design was used to compare mediums’ and non-mediums’ responses to an anonymous online survey regarding their health issues. PARTICIPANTS (I) Data was collected from five Windbridge Certified Research Mediums. (II) Survey responses from 125 mediums were compared to responses from 222 non-mediums. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES (I) General physiological measures and 28 hematological elements were assessed. (II) Reports regarding autoimmune disease diagnoses and specific ailments by organ system were collected. RESULTS Novel findings from this study included the following: (I) No significant hematological or physiological changes were seen in the mediums when pre- and post-condition comparisons were made for the counter-balanced sessions. (II) Compared to non-mediums, more mediums reported having at least one autoimmune disease (35.2% vs. 18.9%; p = 0.00076; z = 3.37; h = 0.4). Mediums also reported experiencing more health issues than did non-mediums (8.08 ± 5.38 vs. 5.09 ± 4.17 symptoms; p < 0.000001, g = 0.6). Specifically, more mediums than non-mediums (all p < 0.004) reported water retention (19.2% vs. 5.0%, z = 4.23, h = 0.5), bruising easily (20.0% vs. 9.0%, z = 2.93, h = 0.3), gastrointestinal issues (35.2% vs. 18.5%, z = 3.48, h = 0.4), headaches/migraines (26.4% vs. 11.3%, z = 3.63, h = 0.4), asthma (20.0% vs. 9.0%, z = 2.93, h = 0.3), food intolerances (28.0% vs. 9.9%, z = 4.37, h = 0.5), and sleep disturbances (40.8% vs. 14.9%, z = 5.41 h = 0.6). The proportions of participants reporting exophthalmos, chronic fatigue syndrome, and ankle sprains were not different.

Title:	Hematological and psychophysiological correlates of anomalous information reception in mediums: A preliminary exploration

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: CONTEXT Modern research with mediums—individuals who regularly experience and report communication from the deceased—includes investigations of mediums’ accuracy, psychology, phenomenology, and electrophysiology and the therapeutic potential of mediumship readings for the bereaved. Anecdotal reports imply that chronic medical problems may be a serious concern for mediums. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was two-fold: (I) to systematically investigate the hematological and psychophysiological correlates of anomalous information reception (AIR, the reporting of accurate and specific information about the deceased in the absence of prior knowledge, feedback, or deceptive means) and (II) to compare the reported health issues of mediums and non-mediums. DESING (I) A repeated-measures design in which mediums engaged in blinded mediumship readings and a control condition was used. (II) A parallel-groups design was used to compare mediums’ and non-mediums’ responses to an anonymous online survey regarding their health issues. PARTICIPANTS (I) Data was collected from five Windbridge Certified Research Mediums. (II) Survey responses from 125 mediums were compared to responses from 222 non-mediums. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES (I) General physiological measures and 28 hematological elements were assessed. (II) Reports regarding autoimmune disease diagnoses and specific ailments by organ system were collected. RESULTS Novel findings from this study included the following: (I) No significant hematological or physiological changes were seen in the mediums when pre- and post-condition comparisons were made for the counter-balanced sessions. (II) Compared to non-mediums, more mediums reported having at least one autoimmune disease (35.2% vs. 18.9%; p = 0.00076; z = 3.37; h = 0.4). Mediums also reported experiencing more health issues than did non-mediums (8.08 ± 5.38 vs. 5.09 ± 4.17 symptoms; p < 0.000001, g = 0.6). Specifically, more mediums than non-mediums (all p < 0.004) reported water retention (19.2% vs. 5.0%, z = 4.23, h = 0.5), bruising easily (20.0% vs. 9.0%, z = 2.93, h = 0.3), gastrointestinal issues (35.2% vs. 18.5%, z = 3.48, h = 0.4), headaches/migraines (26.4% vs. 11.3%, z = 3.63, h = 0.4), asthma (20.0% vs. 9.0%, z = 2.93, h = 0.3), food intolerances (28.0% vs. 9.9%, z = 4.37, h = 0.5), and sleep disturbances (40.8% vs. 14.9%, z = 5.41 h = 0.6). The proportions of participants reporting exophthalmos, chronic fatigue syndrome, and ankle sprains were not different.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND Numerous world cultures believe channeling provides genuine information, and channeling rituals in various forms are regularly conducted in both religious and non-religious contexts. Little is known about the physiological correlates of the subjective experience of channeling. METHODS We conducted a prospective within-subject design study with 13 healthy adult trance channels. Participants alternated between 5-minute blocks of channeling and no-channeling three times while electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiography (ECG), galvanic skin response (GSR), and respiration were collected on two separate days. Voice recordings of the same story read in channeling and no-channeling states were also analyzed. RESULTS The pre-laboratory survey data about demographics, perception of the source, purpose and utility of channeled information reflected previous reports. Most participants were aware of their experience (rather than in a full trance) and had varying levels of perceived incorporation (i.e. control of their body). Voice analysis showed an increase in voice arousal and power (dB/Hz) differences in the 125 Hz bins between 0 and 625 Hz, and 3625 and 3875 Hz when reading during the channeling state versus control. Despite subjective perceptions of distinctly different states, no substantive differences were seen in EEG frequency power, ECG measures, GSR and respiration. CONCLUSIONS Voice parameters were different between channeling and no-channeling states using rigorous controlled methods, but other physiology measure collected were not. Considering the subjective and phenomenological differences observed, future studies should include other measures such as EEG connectivity analyses, fMRI and biomarkers.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The belief and prevalence of self-report anomalous information reception (AIR) is widespread worldwide. Some argue that these experiences are a dissociative type of pathology. However, researchers have found conflicting dissociative symptoms in people who claim AIR, with some studies demonstrating differences between those that do and do not endorse AIR experiences and other studies showing increased dissociative symptoms but not at a pathological level. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship of dissociative symptoms to self-report AIR experiences in a large secondary dataset of 2215 participants. Participants were mostly middle-aged, Caucasian, well-educated, not in relationship, middle- to upper-class adults from the USA who were raised Christian but now identify as “Spiritual but not religious.” The occupations were quite varied. The AIR experiences usually began in childhood, and most participants had family members with similar experiences. Clairempathy (87.9%) or the ability to feel the emotions of another person or non-physical entity and claircognizance (88.1%) or the ability to understand or know something without any direct evidence or reasoning process were the most commonly endorsed AIR experiences. They also had the highest weighted scores that summed AIR endorsement, and perceived strength, frequency, and accuracy. Pyrokinesis, levitation, and psychic surgery were quite rare. The mean Dissociation Experience Scale score for all participants was 15.4%?±?17.3. Variability in the total weighted AIR experience score (R-squared, 0.34) was accounted for by the Dissociation Experience Scale score, age, quadratic age, race, education, income, relationship status, family history of AIR experiences, childhood spirituality and importance, and current spirituality and importance (F (26, 1670)?=?34.2, p?<?0.00005). More research is needed to examine the impact of AIR on people’s lives and functionality when having AIR experiences.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Historical records suggest that channeling has existed globally, in a variety of cultures, for thousands of years, and recent research suggests that channeling is more prevalent than most people realize. The present study used an online survey to explore mental health factors, personality characteristics, subjective experiences and the impact of channeling on 83 participants who self-identified as trance channelers. Most participants endorsed being spiritual but not religious as adults, and on average the channeling experiences began at middle age. The majority of participants did not report pathological levels of dissociative or psychotic symptoms, anxiety or depression. Compared to relevant norms, participants reported similar scores on most personality factors, psychological absorption and empathy. Participants’ average scores on emotional and environmental sensitivity corresponded to being designated as sensory-processing sensitives. Participants reported high levels of noetic beliefs and experiences, particularly beliefs in life after death, non-local consciousness and telepathy. Most participants reported that their channeling process is willful and consensual, and that they are consciously aware of the channeling state while it occurs. The majority of participants also reported a positive impact of channeling on their lives. Lower psychotic symptoms, older age when the trance channeling experiences began, and higher sensitivity scores predicted a greater positive impact of trance on participants’ lives. Given that trance channeling has played a role in religious and spiritual traditions around the world throughout history, the present study provides an important exploration of the trance channeling phenomenon.

Title:	Psi performance as a function of demographic and personality factors in smartphone-based tests: Using a “SEARCH” approach.

Abstract/Results:	Objective: We set out to gain a better understanding of human psychic or “psi” functioning by using a smartphone-based app to gather data from thousands of participants. Our expectations were that psi performance would often be revealed to be in the direction opposite to the participants’ conscious intentions (“expectation-opposing”; previously called “psi-missing”), and that gender and psi belief would be related to performance. Method:We created and launched three iOS-based tasks, available from 2017 to 2020, related to micro-psychokinesis (the ability to mentally influence a random number generator) and precognition (the ability to predict future randomly selected events). We statistically analyzed data from more than 2,613 unique logins and 995,995 contributed trials using null hypothesis significance testing as well as a pre-registered confirmatory analysis. Results: Our expectations were confirmed, and we discovered additional effects post-hoc. Our key findings were: 1) significant expectation-opposing effects, with a confirmatory pre-registered replication of a clear expectation-opposing effect on a micro-pk task, 2) performance correlated with psi belief on all three tasks, 3) performance on two of the three tasks related to gender, 4) men and women apparently used different strategies to perform micro-pk and precognition tasks. Conclusions: We describe our recommendations for future attempts to better understand performance on forced-choice psi tasks. The mnemonic for this strategy is SEARCH: Small effects, Early and exploratory, Accrue data, Recognize diversity in approach, Characterize rather than impose, and Hone in on big results.

History:	The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives. Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research. The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

History:	In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries. The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project. The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others. The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.
