The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: ERPs were acquired in the test phases of three memory experiments, where three classes of word were presented. These were: (i) words encountered in a prior study phase (studied words), (ii) words presented at test for the first time (new words), and (iii) new words repeated after a lag of 7-9 intervening words (repeated test words). In experiments 1 and 2, participants were asked to respond on one key to studied words and on another to new as well as to repeated test words. In experiment 3, a binary response was again required, but in this case repeated test and studied words were assigned to the same key. In each experiment, the principal focus for analysis was on the differences between the ERPs at mid-frontal electrode locations from 300 to 500 ms post-stimulus that were associated with incorrect responses to studied words (misses) and correct responses to new words. It has been proposed that relatively greater positivity for studied than for new words at this locus reflects the greater familiarity of studied than of unstudied words. ERPs elicited by misses were reliably more positive-going than those elicited by correct rejections in experiments 1 and 2 only. These findings support the link between this modulation of the electrical record and familiarity in so far as the designs of the experiments lead to the prediction that the average level of familiarity associated with misses should be higher in the first two experiments than in the third. In combination with findings in other studies, these data support dual-process accounts of recognition memory.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: The interference of a secondary visual emotional task on the P3 component elicited by an auditory odd-ball paradigm was studied in recidivist inmates and controls. The main ERP study was preceded by a SDT based paradigm in order to assess the sensitivity of both groups for emotional arousal and valence. For this phase, controls reported lower values, were less liberal and obtained higher sensitivity scores for emotional arousal, whereas no differences were found for valence except for criteria where groups did not differ for lower cut-points but did so for higher response categories (from 5-6 on). These results suggested that to obtain the same pattern of emotional responses for both groups, different stimuli ought to be used. Based on this, the visual stimuli for the ERP paradigm were selected so that both groups would be paired concerning their sensitivity values. The ERP results showed that controls presented higher amplitudes for P3 under the Pure (absence of visual stimulation) condition than for Positive, Neutral or Negative conditions. There were no effects for the recidivist criminals. P3 peak latency was significantly earlier for the Pure condition. Thus, for the control group, we obtained a reduction of auditory P3 peak amplitude when subjects were stimulated by pictures, regardless of its valence, suggesting a shift of attentional resources to such stimuli. This was not found for inmates. This suggests that, besides a basic impairment on the detection and discrimination of emotional information, antisocials may further be affected by anomalous neurocognitive processing, translated by deficits in the efficient allocation of processing resources on peripheral tasks, even if they contain emotional significance.

Title:	Brain potentials and integration of external and internal features into face representations

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: In this ERP study we analyzed how different orders of presentation of external and internal features influence the integration of facial components into face gestalts. Participants carried out a face-feature matching task in which, in each trial, external (E) and internal (I) facial features were presented separately and in sequence, followed by a complete unfamiliar face (matching or mismatching). For the E-I group of participants the order of presentation was external features, internal features and then the complete face. The I-E group viewed the internal features first. Mismatch effects in complete faces were more conspicuous and lasted from about 300 to 600 ms with the order E-I, while those with the order I-E were scarcely observable, and significant only from 450 to 470 ms. The external features tended to elicit a larger P150, while the N170 was preferentially associated with the internal ones. A P360, probably indicating stimulus relevance, was present in both groups for external features, while it was associated with internal features only in the I-E group. These results suggest that in the E-I order the binding of facial features into a single face representation occurs according to a stepwise process which facilitates the integration. In turn, in the I-E order the processing related to the two sets of features appears more dissociated and is of a more componential nature. Moreover, we propose that the external features may be especially relevant for object categorization, while internal features would be more closely related to subsequent configural mechanisms.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to investigate the role of attention on the processing of facial expressions of fear and disgust. Stimuli consisted of overlapping pictures of a face and a house. Participants had to monitor repetitions of faces or houses, in separate blocks of trials, so that object-based attention was manipulated while spatial attention was kept constant. Faces varied in expression and could be either fearful or neutral (in the fear condition) or disgusted or neutral (in the disgust condition). When attending to faces, participants were required to signal repetitions of the same person, with the facial expressions being completely irrelevant to the task. Different effects of selective attention and different patterns of brain activity were observed for faces with fear and disgust expressions. Results indicated that the perception of fear from faces is gated by selective attention at early latencies, whereas a sustained positivity for fearful faces compared to neutral faces emerged around 160 ms at central–parietal sites, independent of selective attention. In the case of disgust, ERP differences began only around 160 ms after stimulus onset, and only after 480 ms was the perception of disgust modulated by attention allocation. Results are interpreted in terms of different neural mechanisms for the perception of fear and disgust and related to the functional significance of these two emotions for the survival of the organism.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Brain activity underlying explicit and implicit processing of face familiarity was assessed by Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) elicited by famous and unknown faces with happy or neutral expressions. A set of faces was presented in a familiarity judgment (explicit) task and another in an expression judgment (implicit familiarity) task. After recording, these tasks were repeated exchanging the stimuli, and post-recording behavioral data from the familiarity task were used for re-averaging EEG segments from the expression task. Both explicit and implicit processing of famous faces resulted in an enhanced N250. Explicit processing of famous faces was specifically associated with earlier N400 and P600, with increased activity within brain areas involved in identity processing around 250 and 450 ms. These findings suggest different brain dynamics for explicit and implicit face processing, and that implicit processing of the identity in the context of an expression task is mainly associated with the transient activation of face representations in memory.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Whereas some behavioral studies have shown that internal features are crucial for efficient face recognition in healthy adults, compared to external features, the brain mechanisms underlying this “internal features advantage” are still unknown. In the present study, the differential relevance of both subsets of facial features is addressed analyzing N400-like potentials elicited in a face-feature matching task, where external or internal features and complete face targets were displayed consecutively in each trial. Experiment 1 revealed a larger and longer-lasting N400-like effect with the prior presentation of internal features, which suggests more efficient processing of long-term face-related information. An analysis of neural sources in Experiment 2 revealed greater activation of frontal and left temporal brain areas in the processing of mismatching targets when preceded by internal features. Thus, brain electrical correlates of the “internal features advantage” could be verified around 300-400 ms post-stimulus and supported by a face-identity related neural network.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: We present results from an online experiment designed to probe the cognitive underpinnings of intra-sentential pronoun resolution. Event-related brain potentials were used to test the hypothesis that the processing of anaphoric links established between pronouns and non commanding antecedents demands more cognitive resources than the processing of anaphoric links to commanding antecedents. The experimental results obtained show, among others, a major N400-like effect elicited by the pronouns resolved to the non-commanding antecedent. This enhanced negativity suggests that, as hypothesized, resolving a pronoun to a non commanding antecedent is a more resource demanding process than resolving it to an antecedent in a commanding position. Our results can be interpreted within a theoretical framework for anaphor resolution that distinguishes two processing routes: a more resource-demanding discourse-based route and a less taxing syntax-only route.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Adaptive social behavior requires perceiving and flexible processing of changing facial expressions that convey different socio-affective meanings. Although a more conscious processing and effortful interpretation of some facial expressions, such as disgust, may be required, certain facial expressions, such as fear, may be processed in a rapid, more automatic, way. To advance in this issue, event-related potentials were used to investigate the effects of attention and emotion expression on face processing in the brain. The emotion facial expressions that were examined were the prototypical of different basic emotions (fear, disgust, happiness, surprise, anger and sadness). Stimuli consisted of a house and a face transparently superimposed. Participants were instructed to attend to either the face or the house, in different emotion expression conditions, in order to signal consecutive repetitions of the same person or the same house in separate blocks of trials. The emotional nature of the faces was not relevant to the task. Different effects of attention and different spatio-temporal patterns of brain electrical activity were observed for faces with distinct emotion facial expressions. Results showed that the processing of distinct emotion from faces is gated by attention allocation at different latencies and associated with different neural responses. We conclude that different brain mechanisms underlie the perception of distinct basic emotion facial expressions. Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: This research project aimed to test several hypotheses including that recidivist offenders show lower sensitivity to the intensity of emotional stimuli than controls, and that emotional stimuli that elicit identical arousal in both groups produce higher interference on the neurocognitive processing of control subjects. METHODS: To test the aforementioned hypotheses, we put forward an experiment based on the Signal Detection Theory, in which 120 slides from the International Affective Picture System were exhibited to 38 male recidivist offenders and 30 non-criminal controls. Subjects were asked to rate each slide in a 9 point scale for the perceived arousal. Based on the above experiment, a subset of slides of identical emotional arousal was presented to 20 subjects from each group, with simultaneous ERP recordings by means of an auditory odd-ball paradigm. RESULTS: Receiver Operating Characteristic curves from the first experiment show that mean Az values for recidivist offenders are lower than for controls considering different categories of emotional arousal (F(1,64) = 9.84, p < .01). Results from the second experiment show that when both groups are under emotional stimulation of equivalent arousal, the controls evidence a higher reduction of P300 amplitude (F(1, 17) = 8.857, p = .008) than offenders (ns). CONCLUSIONS: In this study we verified that recidivist offenders are less sensitive than controls for different categories of emotional intensity, requiring stimuli of increased intensity to perceive the same arousal as controls. Furthermore, even if groups are submitted to stimulation of matched arousal, the interference of such emotional stimuli on neurocognitive processes seems to be higher in controls. However, further analysis will be required to measure the single effects of the emotional stimulation, independently of mental resources involved on sensorial processing.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: Conduct Disorder (CD) is characterised by a persistent pattern of antisocial behaviour appearing during development. Affective disorders such as depression or psychopathic traits are more common in CD. Neurophysiological correlates of these features in CD are unknown. The current study investigates the relationship between the N200 event-related potential component and affect in adolescent boys with CD. Specifically we investigated (1) whether N200 alterations follow normal developmental patterns in CD; (2) whether N200 is associated with depression and/or anxiety in CD; (3) whether there are N200 ERP correlates of callous/unemotional or narcissism traits in CD. METHODS: 20 adolescent males with CD and 31 healthy controls completed a visual continuous performance task (CPT-XX) from an internationally standardised battery (see www.brainresource.com). Affective symptoms and psychopathic traits were assessed using Frick’s antisocial process screening device and the depression, anxiety and stress scale respectively. N200 amplitudes were examined for effects of age and psychopathology. RESULTS: N200 failed to show typical age related reductions as seen in healthy controls. N200 amplitude decreased as a function of depression at left frontal sites and was inversely correlated with narcissism in the same areas. Narcissism was a more significant predictor of N200 (31.8% at F7; 44.6% at FC3) than depression. CU traits strongly correlated with the right anterior temporal lobe, where depression made additive contribution. CONCLUSIONS: Normal development of N200 does not occur in adolescents with CD, and alterations to N200 seen during executive task-completion are linked to the frequently associated features of depression, CU traits and narcissism.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: The present study aims at characterizing the differences between young adults and healthy elderly with respect to the Event Related Potentials (ERPs) elicited by pronoun resolution. We target differences occurring in the early stages of such processing, during which syntactic structure plays the key role in identifying the pronoun’s antecedent, as well as later stages, during which pragmatic inferences and referent integration within the discourse representation are deemed to occur. We hypothesized that, although syntactic processing is well preserved in the elderly group, the same group should show a hindered ability to process pragmatic inferences, namely inferences based upon breaches of pragmatic principles, requiring, in order to be detected, the prediction of the pronominal choice that would conform to the pragmatic principle at stake. METHODS: Participants: 20 elderly (65-80 year old), 20 young adults (20-26 years old). Materials: Gender agreement in 48 pairs of Portuguese complex sentences was manipulated in order to cause pronoun resolution either with the c-commanding NP (1: syntactic antecedent detection; breach of Grice’s maxim of manner - an explicit pronoun occurs instead the portuguese null pronoun (pro), the most economic and common choice for this syntactic context) or with the NP in a genitive recess (2: discourse/semantic antecedent detection; No breach of pragmatic principles), e.g. (1) [[The butler]MASC of [the countess]FEM](i)MASC quarreled with the servant to whom he(i)MASC had lent some money. (2) [[The employee]FEM of [the butcher](i)MASC]FEM quarreled with the client to whom he(i)MASC had sold spoilt sausages. RESULTS: As expected, we found in both age groups an enhanced early, frontally dominant, negativity (250-450 ms time window), indexing a greater processing effort during the first processing stage of the pronoun in type 2 sentences. Also in line with our predictions, an enhanced Late Positivity (450-600 ms time window) emerges in type (1) sentences for the young adults, indexing the additional effort required to compute the pragmatic inference conveyed by the breach of Grice’s maxim of manner. We interpret the absence of this effect in the elderly group as evidence of hindered predictive processing, which fails to provide the basis for the pragmatic inference.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: Contrary to expectations, schizotypy scores did not appear to influence memory accuracy or reaction time in either the location-based source task or the reality monitoring task. Differences were observed, however, in the event-related potential old/new effects as a function of schizotypy throughout the recording epoch (0-1900 ms post-stimulus). These differences were primarily evident when items had been presented in the auditory modality at study, and took the form of smaller old/new effects for the high schizotypes than for the low schizotypes. Early inspection of the ERP data also indicates that the scalp distributions of the old/new effects differ between the groups, suggesting that the neural generators of the old/new effects were at least partially non overlapping between the two groups. In addition, it was observed that the modulating effect of retrieval task-type upon the old/new effects also differed to some extent between the two groups. For example, low schizotypes showed larger old/new effects for the location-based source task than for the reality monitoring task between 800-1200 ms, whereas the reverse was true for the high schizotypes. In addition to these primary findings, our large data set also allowed us to observe other interactions of interest to the memory field in general; between 800-1900 ms, we observed that the modality of study items interacted with retrieval task type such that the old/new effects elicited during these epochs were modulated by study modality during the location-based source monitoring task but not during the reality monitoring task.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Two experiments investigated the functional-anatomical correlates of cognition supporting untrained, emergent relational inference in a stimulus equivalence task. In Experiment 1, after learning a series of conditional relations involving words and pseudowords, participants performed a relatedness task during which EEG was recorded. Behavioural performance was faster and more accurate on untrained, indirectly related symmetry (i.e., learn AB and infer BA) and equivalence trials (i.e., learn AB and AC and infer CB) than on unrelated trials, regardless of whether or not a formal test for stimulus equivalence relations had been conducted. Consistent with previous results, event related potentials (ERPs) evoked by trained and emergent trials at parietal and occipital sites differed only for those participants who had not received a prior equivalence test. Experiment 2 further replicated and extended these behavioural and ERP findings using arbitrary symbols as stimuli and demonstrated time and frequency differences for trained and untrained relatedness trials. Overall, the findings demonstrate convincingly the ERP correlates of intra-experimentally established stimulus equivalence relations consisting entirely of arbitrary symbols and offer support for a contemporary cognitive-behavioural model of symbolic categorisation and relational inference.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The main objective of this review is to provide a descriptive analysis of the biological and physiological markers of tactile sensorial processing in healthy, full-term newborns. Research articles were selected according to the following study design criteria: (a) tactile stimulation for touch sense as an independent variable; (b) having at least one biological or physiological variable as a dependent variable; and (c) the group of participants were characterized as full-term and healthy newborns; a mixed group of full-term newborns and preterm newborns; or premature newborns with appropriate-weight-for-gestational age and without clinical differences or considered to have a normal, healthy somatosensory system. Studies were then grouped according to the dependent variable type, and only those that met the aforementioned three major criteria were described. Cortisol level, growth measures, and urinary catecholamine, serotonin, and melatonin levels were reported as biological-marker candidates for tactile sensorial processing. Heart rate, body temperature, skin-conductance activity, and vagal reactivity were described as neurovegetative-marker candidates. Somatosensory evoked potentials, somatosensory evoked magnetic fields, and functional neuroimaging data also were included.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: INTRODUCTION: A large amount of research in the developmental domain has focused its attention in the newborns’ behavioral analysis. More recently, electrophysiological measures studies, such as ERPs studies, have been used to extend our knowledge about these behavioral data by learning the cerebral processes for normal as well as aberrant development (Karrer, 1998). Indeed, visual event -related potentials (VERPs) studies with infants, at an early stage, have been proposed to be important markers in early diagnosis of sensorial deprivation (Benavente, Tamargo, Tajada, Yuste & Oliván, 2005). Studies comparing healthy newborns and newborns with different pathological diagnosis (i.e., perinatal asphyxia or intraventricular hemorrhage) showed that the VERPs components were different, namely that healthy infants presented more early components, such as N1, P2 and N3 (Kraemer, Abrahamsson & Sjostrom, 1999; Toru & Watanabe, 2006). Therefore, the objective of the present study is to understand and identify the VERPs components to different intensity visual stimuli in healthy infants. METHOD: Sixty-one newborns were recruited, thirteen families came to the hospital and thirteen infants were assessed. All infants were full-term, with birth weights ranging from 2620 to 4270g and had normal Apgar scores. The data for one baby was lost due to technical problems. VERP data for twelve caucasian infants with ages ranging from 23 to 41 days were recorded. Study objectives and procedures were described to parents and informed consent was obtained. When they arrived, the newborn was placed in their mother’s lap and the researcher offered white flashes holding the lamp of a Grass PS33-Plus (Astro-Med Inc.) flash stimulator, positioned at 20 cm distance from the infant and directed towards their eyes. The stimulus was offered in three different intensities. Data was recorded using a QuickAmp amplifier linked to a 32 channels ActiCap and Vision Recorder 1.10 Software (Brain Products, Brainvision Inc.). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: All the infants showed visual evoked responses and isual ERPs components were identified. This knowledge can help professionals to make early diagnosis and adjust more direct and appropriate treatment plans for infants with sensorial processing difficulties.
