The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	RESULTS: The interference of a secondary visual emotional task on the P3 component elicited by an auditory odd-ball paradigm was studied in recidivist inmates and controls. The main ERP study was preceded by a SDT based paradigm in order to assess the sensitivity of both groups for emotional arousal and valence. For this phase, controls reported lower values, were less liberal and obtained higher sensitivity scores for emotional arousal, whereas no differences were found for valence except for criteria where groups did not differ for lower cut-points but did so for higher response categories (from 5-6 on). These results suggested that to obtain the same pattern of emotional responses for both groups, different stimuli ought to be used. Based on this, the visual stimuli for the ERP paradigm were selected so that both groups would be paired concerning their sensitivity values. The ERP results showed that controls presented higher amplitudes for P3 under the Pure (absence of visual stimulation) condition than for Positive, Neutral or Negative conditions. There were no effects for the recidivist criminals. P3 peak latency was significantly earlier for the Pure condition. Thus, for the control group, we obtained a reduction of auditory P3 peak amplitude when subjects were stimulated by pictures, regardless of its valence, suggesting a shift of attentional resources to such stimuli. This was not found for inmates. This suggests that, besides a basic impairment on the detection and discrimination of emotional information, antisocials may further be affected by anomalous neurocognitive processing, translated by deficits in the efficient allocation of processing resources on peripheral tasks, even if they contain emotional significance.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Classic studies regarding emotional processing, either in normal subjects or in pathological groups, rely on the basic assumption of a linear correspondence between stimuli input and perceived emotional information. This neglects the evidence that different experimental groups may perceive the same stimuli features differently. Thus, when emotional input is to act as an independent variable, it becomes fundamental to assure equivalent emotional loading in all groups under comparison, even if using different stimuli. This is not a commonly used procedure when studying emotion or its influence on other cognitive processes. In order to address this issue, a signal detection theory based methodology is presented, which permits measuring sensitivity indices for emotional stimuli, while controlling participants’ subjective criteria. This proposal may represent a useful methodological approach for the study of several emotion-related problems and albeit applicable to any group of subjects.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Recorreu-se a uma metodologia de Detecção de Sinal para estudar a sensibilidade diferencial de um grupo de reclusos reincidentes a estímulos visuais emocionógenos. Esta abordagem constitui uma ruptura com a prática metodológica da maior parte dos trabalhos, que partem do pressuposto que os mesmos estímulos desencadeiam efeitos idênticos no SNC de diferentes grupos de indivíduos, incluindo delinquentes. Na verdade, os resultados sugerem a necessidade de utilizar estímulos diferentes para obter o mesmo tipo de resposta emocional em delinquentes e controlos, uma vez que os primeiros apresentam menor sensibilidade para a intensidade emocional (F(1,64) = 9.84, p < .01). Garantido este acerto metodológico poder-se-á, com rigor, avaliar a interferência da emoção no processamento de informação neste tipo de sujeitos.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: This research project aimed to test several hypotheses including that recidivist offenders show lower sensitivity to the intensity of emotional stimuli than controls, and that emotional stimuli that elicit identical arousal in both groups produce higher interference on the neurocognitive processing of control subjects. METHODS: To test the aforementioned hypotheses, we put forward an experiment based on the Signal Detection Theory, in which 120 slides from the International Affective Picture System were exhibited to 38 male recidivist offenders and 30 non-criminal controls. Subjects were asked to rate each slide in a 9 point scale for the perceived arousal. Based on the above experiment, a subset of slides of identical emotional arousal was presented to 20 subjects from each group, with simultaneous ERP recordings by means of an auditory odd-ball paradigm. RESULTS: Receiver Operating Characteristic curves from the first experiment show that mean Az values for recidivist offenders are lower than for controls considering different categories of emotional arousal (F(1,64) = 9.84, p < .01). Results from the second experiment show that when both groups are under emotional stimulation of equivalent arousal, the controls evidence a higher reduction of P300 amplitude (F(1, 17) = 8.857, p = .008) than offenders (ns). CONCLUSIONS: In this study we verified that recidivist offenders are less sensitive than controls for different categories of emotional intensity, requiring stimuli of increased intensity to perceive the same arousal as controls. Furthermore, even if groups are submitted to stimulation of matched arousal, the interference of such emotional stimuli on neurocognitive processes seems to be higher in controls. However, further analysis will be required to measure the single effects of the emotional stimulation, independently of mental resources involved on sensorial processing.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Study of emotional responses of antisocial individuals has produced inconsistent findings. Some studies report emotional deficits, while others find no differences between people with and without antisocial behaviours. AIMS: Our aim was to apply signal detection theory methods to compare the sensitivity of antisocial and control participants to emotional stimuli. We hypothesised that offenders would show lower ability to discriminate changes in the level of arousal and valence of emotional stimuli relative to the controls. METHODS: Signal detection theory was applied to study the sensitivity of recidivist offenders in prison to emotional arousal and valence induced by pictures. This approach, novel in this context, provides a departure from the usual reliance on self-report. RESULTS: Offenders reported higher arousal than controls but showed lower sensitivity to changes between different levels of arousal (whereas no differences were found for valence). Also, offenders showed increased response bias for changes in the levels of arousal, as well as in the higher levels of valence. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that direct observations of emotional arousal, but not valence, discriminate between recidivist offenders with antisocial personality disorder and non-offending controls. Use of such approaches is likely to provide more valid data than self-reports and may prove particularly useful in studies of intervention for recidivists or in assessment of their readiness for release.
