To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	BOOK DESCRIPTION: A new book to help the dying, their loved ones and their health care workers better understand the dying process and to come to terms with death itself. The Art of Dying is a contemporary version of the medieval Ars Moriendi-a manual on how to achieve a good death. Peter Fenwick is an eminent neuropsychiatrist, academic and expert on disorders of the brain. His most compelling and provocative research has been into the end of life phenomena, including near-death experiences and deathbed visions of the dying person, as well as the experiences of hospice and palliative care workers and relatives of dying people. Dr. Fenwick believes that consciousness may be independent of the brain and so able to survive the death of the brain, a theory which has divided the scientific community. The "problem with death" is deeply rooted in our culture and the social organization of death rituals. Fenwick believes that with serious engagement and through further investigation of these phenomena, he can help change attitudes so that we in the West can face up to death, and embrace it as a significant and sacred part of life. We have become used to believing that we have to shield each other from the idea of death. Fear of death means we view it as something to be fought every step of the way. Aimed at a broad popular readership, The Art of Dying looks at how other cultures have dealt with death and the dying process (The Tibetan "death system", Swedenborg, etc.) and compares this with phenomena reported through recent scientific research. It describes too the experiences of health care workers who are involved with end of life issues who feel that they need a better understanding of the dying process, and more training in how to help their patients die well by overcoming the common barriers to a good death, such as unfinished business and unresolved emotions of guilt or hate. From descriptions of the phenomena encountered by the dying and those around them, to mapping out ways in which we can die a "good death", this book is an excellent basis for helping people come to terms with death.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: A recent study shows that the greatest fear for many Britons is to die alone. More than half the complaints received by the UK National Health Service (NHS) concern end-of-life care, with an emphasis on spiritual matters. Much has been written on the spiritual needs of the dying, but many doctors and nurses still find this a difficult area to approach. They lack the confidence and/or training to recognize or discuss spiritual aspects of death and dying or to affirm the spiritual needs of the dying person. Our end-of-life experience (ELE)research suggests that deathbed visions (DVs) and deathbed coincidences (DCs) are not uncommon, and that the dying process appears to involve an instinctive need for spiritual connection and meaning, requiring compassionate understanding and respect from those who provide end-of-life care.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Studies in hospices and nursing homes have shown that a number of different phenomena are associated with the mental states of the dying. In the days or weeks before death the dying person may have premonitions, often unrecognised, of their impending death, or visions of dead relatives who they say have visited them. Relatives who may be spatially distant from but emotionally close to the dying person may experience an inexplicable awareness of them at the time of their death. Other phenomena reported at the time of death are clocks stopping, mechanical malfunctions, strange animal behaviour and shapes seen leaving the body or light seen surrounding it. Although these phenomena are well recognised by both carers and relatives, they are seldom discussed because they are difficult to explain in terms of any recognised medical model. A possible alternative hypothesis involves non-local effects which would require a quantum mechanical explanation. This is supported by parapsychological findings which are not always accepted by mainstream science. The hypothesis suggests that as death approaches consciousness becomes loosened from the brain-mind structure and this is the prime mover for the non-local effects that are noticed at this time.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Many cultures have reported end-of-life experiences (ELEs) as part of the dying process. However, few studies have examined the mental states of the dying in the weeks and days before death. Following an ELE pilot study with a palliative care team, 38 nurses, doctors and end-of-life carers from two hospices and a nursing home took part in a 5-year retrospective followed by a 1-year prospective ELE study. Interviewees’ reports (first-hand and second-hand accounts from relatives, patients and residents) suggested that ELEs are not uncommon. ELEs included deathbed phenomena (DBP) such as visions, coincidences and the desire to reconcile with estranged family members. These experiences seemed to comfort both the dying and the bereaved. Interviewees described other phenomena such as clocks stopping synchronistically at the time of death, shapes leaving the body, light surrounding the body and strange animal behavior. Interviewees confirmed that ELEs differed from drug-induced hallucinations and occurred in clear consciousness. Most expressed concern about a lack of specialist ELE training and education and recommended that ELE modules be included in their training courses. ELEs provided comfort and hope for the dying and consolation for the bereaved. Further research is required to find the true prevalence and range of ELE phenomena.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Anecdotal evidence suggests that death may be heralded by phenomena which seem to comfort dying persons and prepare them spiritually for death. Medical practitioners have been slow to recognize these end of life experiences (ELEs) and there has been little research into the way carers respond when patients try to talk about phenomena they have experienced, and how these ELEs influence the carers’ work. A pilot study with a palliative care team revealed that patients regularly report these phenomena as an important part of their dying process, and that the experiences are far broader than the traditional image of an apparition at the end of the bed. The study suggested that many Palliative Carers are not trained to help them recognize the wider implications of ELEs, or to deal with difficult questions or situations, which arise from them. Many ELEs may go unreported because of this. The pilot study also suggested that ELEs are not drug-induced, and that patients would rather talk to nurses than doctors about their experiences. There are many subjective phenomena in common between ELEs and near death experiences suggesting that they may form part of a single process.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: This article presents an interim study into the end-of-life experiences of elderly residents in a Gloucestershire nursing home as reported by nurses and care assistants. It draws comparisons between the experiences of an end-of-life experiences pilot study conducted with the Camden Palliative Care Team in the United Kingdom with those of the nursing home staff to consider whether the dying experience of elderly nursing home residents is the same as those whose lives are foreshortened through terminal illness. It draws the conclusion that elderly residents have end-of-life experiences similar to those described in the Camden pilot study. It also examines the effect that end-of-life experiences have on the carers and reflects on possible needs for specialized training and support to deal with such existential issues.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: Anecdotal evidence suggests that death may be heralded by deathbed phenomena (DBP) such as visions that comfort the dying and prepare them spiritually for death. Medical practitioners have been slow to recognize DBP, and there has been little research into the spiritual effect that DBP have on caregivers or on how these phenomena influence their work. A pilot study looking into the occurrence of DBP was conducted by the palliative care team at Camden Primary Care Trust. Interviews revealed that patients regularly report these phenomena as an important part of their dying process, and that DBP are far broader than the traditional image of an apparition at the end of the bed. Results of the interviews raise concerns about the lack of education or training to help palliative care teams recognize the wider implications of DBP and deal with difficult questions or situations associated with them. Many DBP may go unreported because of this. Results of this pilot study also suggest that DBP are not drug-induced, and that patients would rather talk to nurses than doctors about their experiences.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The attitude towards death and dying depends on the culture. In prehistoric times grave artifacts suggest a belief in the continuation of life. This belief in an afterlife has continued through different cultures and societies to the present day. The fear of death seems to have grown in parallel with those religions which have promised judgment at the time of death. In our modern Western secular society death is regarded as a medical failure, the rituals which used to attend it have largely been abandoned, and life is prolonged so that death has lost all dignity. It is now beginning to be recognised that dying may not be a simple switching off, but a process leading to death and the gradual dissolution of consciousness. This dissolution seems to involve experiences for the dying which are spiritual and important for them. A number of these phenomena raise the possibility that consciousness may not be limited to the brain, but extend beyond it. Fortunately, palliative care is now taught in medical schools, and treatment of the dying is now recognised to be as important as treatment for the living. This article looks at the history of death, the significance of the dying process for consciousness research, and the education needed for carers of the dying.

Abstract/Results:	BOOK DESCRIPTION: The D-Word is a practical guide to support relatives, friends and carers who are coping with the distress and anxiety of someone nearing the end of life, or who has suddenly died. Today, life-extending treatments have over-ridden care for the soul. Death is regarded as a medical failure, and usually hidden away in hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and mortuaries. We have lost the ability to talk openly about the end of life. It's frightening to know how to talk to a relative or friend who is dying, or to someone who has been suddenly bereaved but unless we confront this fear, important things can remain unsaid or incomplete, which often turns into unresolved grief, guilt and anger. History:	The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research. The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: AIM Investigate the mental states of the dying in the South of England and in Rotterdam Holland. METHOD One year prospective and five year retrospective questionnaire and interview study of Carers of the dying. TV, Radio and newspaper request for stories, collected and classified. RESULTS 110 carers questioned in 3 UK and 3 Dutch Hospices and Nursing Homes. Characteristics of experiences defined – Death Bed Visions, Transiting to a new reality, Terminal Lucidity, Death Bed coincidences and many phenomena at the time of death e.g. light in the room, shapes seen leaving the body, animals upset and clocks stopping. Experiences were same in Holland and UK. CONCLUSION End of Life Experiences very common. Carers requested more teaching as not part of present syllabus. Very comforting to the patients. These papers stimulated more research. Early findings confirmed by other studies.
