Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research. The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology. To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world. Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title:	Final report - System mechanisms of attention: toward the nature of hypnotizability

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: A great body of data evidences that hypnotizability correlates with sustained and selected attentional abilities. The study of several auditory event-related measures and the continuous performance test (CPT) might be useful to assess the attentional resources in high (HH) and low (LH) hypnotizable subjects. Val158Met polymorphism of catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) gene impact dopamine (DA) signaling in prefrontal cortex and may participate in mechanisms of attention and hypnotizability. The aim of the study was to investigate neurophysiological and genetic underpinnings of attentional abilities in subjects with high (HH) and low (LH) hypnotizability. The study involved 19 HH (10 women and 9 men) and 17 LH (4 women and 13 men) subjects. Val158Met COMT polymorphism was detected using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response (ASR) was used to estimate involuntary attentive processes; the odd-ball task performance with concurrent estimation of P300 amplitude and latency were determined as voluntary attention measures. The Immediate Memory Task (IMT - the CPT adaptation) was used to test the sustained voluntary attention and its selectivity. Met/Met homozygosity of COMT was associated with high hypnotizability. In the ASR model HHs displayed greater baseline response amplitude (excitability) and decreased PPI (i.e., decreased efficacy of sensorimotor gating). In the oddball task HH subjects displayed significantly less error responses to target stimuli and greater P300 amplitude at fronto-central area than LH ones. Hypnotizability x Gender interaction was significant for IMT performance: HH males displayed more liberal strategy (with higher number of commission errors) than LH men; HH women displayed higher number of correct responses than LH ones. Besides, after ASR testing the cortisol level in HH women was higher than in LH women, HH and LH men. Our results evidenced the differences in the cognitive strategy and organization of attentional processes in HH and LH persons.

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: The study investigated association between hypnotizability, COMT polymorphism, P50 suppression ratio and prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle response (ASR). 21 high (HH) and 19 low (LH) hypnotizable subjects participated in the study. The frequency of Met/Met carriers of COMT polymorphysm was higher in HH than in LH group (33.3% versus 10.6%, p=.049). Increased ASR amplitude and latency, and decreased prepulse inhibition at 120 ms lead interval were found in HH compared to LH group. The effect of COMT genotype on prepulse inhibition was observed in LH group only. No between-group differences in P50 measures were found. The obtained results suppose the participation of dopamine system in mechanisms of hypnotizability, and different allocation of attentional resources in HH and LH subjects.

The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project. The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665). Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others. The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Title:	Auditory evoked potentials evidence for differences in information processing between high and low hypnotizable subjects

Abstract/Results:	ABSTRACT: N100 and P300 auditory evoked potentials in 2-stimulus oddball paradigm were analyzed in high (HH, n = 18) and low (LH, n = 15) hypnotizable participants under waking condition. LH subjects committed more errors than HH subjects. HH subjects demonstrated shorter N100 latencies at frontal electrodes and significant N100 differences between target and nontarget stimuli (higher N100 amplitude and increased latency at parietal sites to targets vs. nontargets), whereas LH subjects failed to show any differences. The overall increase of P300 amplitude with frontal-central localization of P300 maximum was found in HH subjects compared to LH subjects. The obtained results support the psychophysiological model of HH individuals having more effective frontal attentional systems involved in detecting, integrating, and filtering relevant information.
