Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
We used two established methods for analysing the EEG response of the neurotypical adult human brain to examine the execution and observation of simple motor actions. In one, execution or observation of a button-press in response to a tone caused a decrease in the power at 8-13 Hz ("mu") frequencies. In the other, the response preparation (or the inferred response preparation when these actions are observed in another person) was measured by the averaged response time-locked potentials measured over motor cortex--the "readiness potential". Results indicated that the mirrored readiness potentials were bilaterally generated. We found sex differences for both measures. However, whereas females showed a greater degree of response for the mu power measure during the observation of movement only, males showed larger readiness potentials during both movement performance and observation. Both measures have been claimed to be neural correlates of mirror systems in the brain where processes responsible for actions are linked to the perception of such actions. Such mirror systems have also been implicated in higher order social cognition such as empathy. However, we found no correlations between either of our EEG measures and self-report scales of social cognition. The results imply sex differences in the measured systems and for mirroring that are not directly related to social cognition. We suggest that the results may indicate two dissociable motor mirroring systems that can be measured by induced and evoked EEG.

OBJECTIVES:
We aim to examine the individual and sex differences in EEG correlates of action observation and error monitoring and to investigate whether our measures are congruent to what has been suggested by some to be a human “mirror neuron system”. Our measures are mu desynchronisation and the readiness potentials (RPs) during action execution and observation, and the error-related negativity (ERN) triggered by the execution and observation of errors.
METHOD:
Expt 1: We tested 48 participants using an experimental paradigm where the participant both performed simple button press actions and observed the experimenter make such actions. Participants also completed established social cognition scales (EQ, SQ, IRI).
Expt 2: We tested 43 participants performing a demanding Go/No-Go task and observing the experimenter performing the task. Participants also completed empathy-related scales as above.
RESULTS:
In Expt 1, we found sex differences for both mu desynchronisation and RPs. However, the sex differences were in opposing directions with a female superiority for the induced mu measure and a male superiority for the evoked RP measure. Furthermore, neither measure correlated with social cognition scales and the measures did not correlate with each other.
Preliminary analysis of Expt 2 indicates that the magnitude and time course of the ERN to self-performed errors in equivalent for males and females. The ERN for observed errors appears to emerge later than that to performed errors and to be enhanced in females compared with males.
CONCLUSIONS:
Our report for Expt 1 has been accepted for publication and concludes that EEG measures of simple motoric mirroring can reveal both male and female superiorities and that these measures need not correlate with measures of social cognition. We speculate that our results may be indicative of two dissociable motoric mirroring systems. Our analysis of Expt 2 indicates that we have replicated work in the literature that suggests a mirror system for response monitoring and have measured a sex difference for it.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The presence of a network of areas in the parietal and premotor cortices, which are active both during action execution and observation, suggests that we might understand the actions of other people by activating those motor programs for making similar actions. Although neurophysiological and imaging studies show an involvement of the somatosensory cortex (SI) during action observation and execution, it is unclear whether SI is essential for understanding the somatosensory aspects of observed actions. To address this issue, we used off-line transcranial magnetic continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) just before a weight judgment task. Participants observed the right hand of an actor lifting a box and estimated its relative weight. In counterbalanced sessions, we delivered sham and active cTBS over the hand region of the left SI and, to test anatomical specificity, over the left motor cortex (Ml) and the left superior parietal lobule (SPL). Active cTBS over SI, but not over Ml or SPL, impaired task performance relative to sham cTBS. Moreover, active cTBS delivered over SI just before participants were asked to evaluate the weight of a bouncing ball did not alter performance compared to sham cTBS. These findings indicate that SI is critical for extracting somatosensory features (heavy/light) from observed action kinematics and suggest a prominent role of SI in action understanding.

Abstract/Results: Humans are equipped with an extraordinary ability to understand and imitate actions by mapping the observed movement onto their own cortical motor system. Long-established lines of research have identified two correlates of this motor resonance following action observation: the mu rhythm event-related desynchronization (mu-ERD) recorded through electroencephalography (EEG) and the facilitation of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the primary motor cortex (M1). Yet, whether mu-ERD and MEP facilitation reflect unique or distinct mechanisms is not conclusive, as prior work did not combine simultaneous TMS–EEG recording with a trial-by-trial analysis of the two markers. To address this issue, here, we used TMS–EEG co-registration while participants observed and executed finger movements. EEG was continuously recorded while single-pulse TMS was administered over the left M1 and MEPs were recorded from the right hand. We found stronger motor cortex recruitment during action execution and observation as shown by mu-ERD. MEPs instead were larger overall during action execution and showed a facilitation specific to the muscles involved in the observed movements. Interestingly, when analyzing these two parameters using a trial-by-trial statistical approach, we did not find any relationship between mu-ERD and MEPs within the action observation condition. Our findings support the notion that EEG and TMS indices of motor resonance reflect distinct neural mechanisms.

Abstract/Results: While the brain regions involved in action observation are relatively well documented in humans and primates, how these regions communicate to help understand and predict actions remains poorly understood. Traditional views emphasized a feed-forward architecture in which visual features are organized into increasingly complex representations that feed onto motor programs in parietal and then premotor cortices where the matching of observed actions upon the observer's own motor programs contributes to action understanding. Predictive coding models place less emphasis on feed-forward connections and propose that feed-back connections from premotor regions back to parietal and visual neurons represent predictions about upcoming actions that can supersede visual inputs when actions become predictable, with visual input then merely representing prediction errors. Here we leverage the notion that feed-back connections target specific cortical layers to help adjudicate across these views. Specifically, we test whether observing sequences of hand actions in their natural order, which permits participants to predict upcoming actions, triggers more feed-back input to parietal regions than seeing the same actions in a scrambled sequence that hinders making predictions. Using submillimeter fMRI acquisition at 7T, we find that watching predictable sequences triggers more action-related activity (as measured using intersubject functional correlation) in the parietal cortical area PFt at depths receiving feed-back connections (layers III and V/VI) than watching the exact same actions in scrambled and hence unpredictable sequence. In addition, functional connectivity analysis performed using intersubject functional connectivity confirms that these increased action-related signals in PFt could originate from ventral premotor region BA44. This data showcases the utility of intersubject functional correlation in combination with 7T MRI to explore the architecture of social cognition under more naturalistic conditions, and provides evidence for models that emphasize the importance of feed-back connections in action prediction.

The interaction between different sensory modalities represents a crucial issue in the neuroscience of consciousness: when the processing of one modality is deficient, the concomitant presentation of stimuli of other spared modalities may sustain the restoration of the damaged sensory functions. In this regard, visual enhancement of touch may represent a viable tool in rehabilitating tactile disorders, yet the specific visual features mostly modulating the somatosensory experience remain unsettled.
In this study, healthy subjects underwent a tactile detection task during the observation of videos displaying different contents, including static gratings, meaningless motions and natural or point-lights reach-to-grasp-and-manipulate actions. Concurrently, near-threshold stimuli were delivered to the median nerve at different time-points. The subjective report was collected after each trial; the sensory detection rate was computed and compared across video conditions.
Our results indicate that the specific presence of haptic contents (i.e., the vision of manipulation), either fully displayed or implied by point-lights, magnifies tactile sensitivity. The notion that such stimuli prompt a conscious tactile experience opens to novel rehabilitation approaches for tactile consciousness disorders.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In our everyday life, we constantly interact with our con-specifics. These interactions rely, among other things, on a very fine-grained perception of their bodily movements. Compelling neurophysiological evidence in monkeys showed that this process is a sensory-motor accomplishment. Indeed, mirror neurons have been reported in the monkey brain that respond during both the execution and observation of actions. In this article, I will present a historical overview of the main experimental findings regarding mirror neurons in the monkey, together with their proposed theoretical interpretation. My goal is to sketch a picture of how the field has evolved from the original discovery and to provide the reader with the basic knowledge to critically analyze its rich and constantly growing literature.

Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND:
Despite more than 20 years of research we are still missing a precise characterization of the stimulus-response characteristics of the activation of motor areas during action observation.
AIMS:
The goal of this project is to tackle this question in humans by means of cutting-edge stimulus presentation techniques and EEG recordings.
METHOD:
We first developed an innovative immersive virtual reality (VR) experimental setup in which subjects can act in real time or observe actions executed by humans or avatars. We then recorded the EEG responses of 24 subjects while they executed and observed goal-directed (grasping an object) and non goal-directed (placing the hand on an object) actions presented in three different modalities: executed live in front of them (“live” condition) or displayed by means of movies showing either a person (“movie person” condition) or a photorealistic avatar (“movie avatar” condition).
RESULTS:
We first used the action execution capabilities of our setup to show that embodiment in VR can be effectively used to promote motor rehabilitation in stroke patients and modulate racial bias. In an EEG study, we then showed that observation of live goal-directed actions, compared to the same actions displayed in movies or by means of an avatar, produced patterns of stronger mu suppression across a spatially distributed set of electrodes. Observation of non-manipulative actions produced instead patterns of mu suppression that were similar across all three observation modalities.
CONCLUSIONS:
Our results suggest dissociations in the neuronal processes activated by the observation of goal-directed and non-manipulative actions respectively when observed in different stimulus presentation modalities.
