Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
The Go/NoGo CNV is a biomarker of emotional impulsiveness, hypothetically resulting from a history of early-onset alcohol abuse (EOAA). Go/NoGo CNV has previously been shown to reliably predict violent reoffending in patients discharged from high-secure care into the community.
AIM OF THE STUDY
This study aimed to test the following predictions arising from a hypothesis regarding the role of early-onset alcohol abuse in the genesis of adult antisocial personality (Howard, 2006):
1. EOAA will be shown to mediate the transition from childhood conduct disorder (CD) to adult antisocial personality;
2. Emotional impulsiveness will be demonstrated as a core feature of severe personality disorder (PD);
3. Severe PD will be shown to be associated with a history of severe violence;
4. Reoffending in PD patients released from secure care into the community will be shown to be associated with a toxic triad: severe alcohol abuse, severe CD, and comorbid borderline PD.
5. Through the use of biofeedback it will be demonstrated that it is possible to train the brain of emotionally impulsive offenders so that their Go/NoGo CNV is normalized in a non-impulsive direction.
METHOD
These predictions were tested in a series of studies which examined offenders with PD (see publications below).
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS:
The above predictions were confirmed. These results suggest that a developmental pathway important in the genesis of adult violence (and associated severe PD) runs from childhood CD (and its precursors) to EOAA and hence, via impairment in the brain substrate of cognitive control, to severe PD and violence in adulthood.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The alcohol consumption histories of 563 male patients resident at Broadmoor Hospital over the period 1997–2002 were ascertained from inspection of patients' case files. Information regarding alcohol consumption was obtained from patients' forensic and psychiatric reports and, for a sub-set of the sample (n = 101), from reports of drug and alcohol assessments. Patients were grouped according to whether or not they had abused alcohol (consumed greater than 50 units per week) and, if so, by age of onset of their alcohol abuse: prior to age 19, 19–21, or over 21 years. Forensic and psychiatric reports indicated that 47.4% of the sample had abused alcohol and 22.0% started to abuse before the age of 19. The 70.3% of patients who underwent drug and alcohol assessment were found to have abused alcohol and 48.5% had abused alcohol under the age of 19. These findings underline the high prevalence of early onset alcohol abuse among high-security mentally disordered offenders, and indicate the need for studies that address the intervening variables that mediate the link between teenage alcohol abuse and adult antisocial behaviour.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The hypothesis under investigation in this study in that early onset alcohol abuse is a factor underlying impulsive violence particularly amongst personality disordered offenders. The study has recorded forensic and substance abuse histories, psychometric information, Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) and performance on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) in Personality Disordered patients in Broadmoor. Most prevalent diagnostic category is Anti-social personality disorder. CNV was first described by Grey Walter in 1964. Howard et al (1982), studying special hospital patients reported that, using a symmetrical avoidance paradigm, CNV differentiation was inversely related to psychometric Impulsivity. Previous study indicates that early onset alcohol and drug use is highly prevalent amongst high secure psychiatric patients in the England and Wales jurisdiction (Lumsden et al 2004). This potential risk factor may lead to reduced frontal lobe function. Multi-channel electrophysiological recording of the CNV were collected as a measure of frontal lobe (possibly anterior cingulate) function (Stephan et al 1995). Results are presented from the study relating electrophysiological function (CNV), neuropsychological function (IGT), psychometric/personality profiles (UPPS and IPDE) with behavioural measures (offending and substance use histories and ongoing behaviour in the hospital). Age of onset of alcohol abuse in combination with personality variables is a factor relating to offending and IGT performance.

Prior research highlights the importance of spirituality/religion (S/R) as it relates to several aspects of mental health and clinical interventions. This research has been expanded to include the concurrent examination of neurobiological correlates of S/R to elucidate potential biological mechanisms. However, the majority of neurobiological research on S/R has neglected mental health, and the relationship across all three of these domains (S/R, mental health, and neurobiology) remains unclear. This study systematically reviewed research concurrently examining S/R, mental health, and neurobiology, and rated the methodological quality of included studies. Eighteen identified studies were then included in an integrated literature review and discussion, regarding the neurobiological correlates of S/R as it pertains to depression, anxiety, alcohol/substance misuse, and psychosis. The majority of studies demonstrated moderate to high methodological quality. Findings highlight the need for additional studies in this area as well as research that includes validated assessment of S/R.
