The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

BACKGROUND
In an experiment with high (Highs) and low (Lows) hypnotizables, psi z scores related significantly to percipients’ belief of their success and their previous ostensible psi experiences; there were also moderate to strong correlations between z scores and experiencing an Altered State of Consciousness and other alterations, but only among the Highs (Marcusson-Clavertz & Cardeña, 2011).
AIMS
The current pre-registered study had three main aims: a) replicate the finding of the previous study with Highs with a larger N, b) compare ganzfeld and hypnosis procedures, and c) test the Model of Pragmatic Information (MPI).
METHOD
Participants (N = 35) underwent two sessions of 10 min induction and 10 min reporting each, in counterbalanced order, one following an automated ganzfeld procedure, the other a recorded relaxing hypnosis session. The authors served as “sender” and “experimenter” in different buildings. Participants filled out the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory at the beginning and end of the sessions, and gave a rating of 0-100 to 4 film clips (one of them the target), from which psi z scores were derived, the latter were the DV for all hypotheses.
RESULTS
Overall, participants did not score better than chance and there was no significant difference between hypnosis and ganzfeld. However for the ganzfeld sessions, z scores correlated significantly with Altered State shift scores (baseline – ganzfeld scores) and also correlated significantly with attentional focus and low arousal session scores. The pattern of significant correlations was generally consistent with the MPI.
CONCLUSION
Although the overall psi hit rate was not significant, a significant relation between psi scoring and experiencing an Altered State in ganzfeld was replicated.

In a previous experiment with participants high (Highs) and low (Lows) in hypnotizability, psi z scores had moderate to strong correlations with percipients’ belief of their success and their previous ostensible psi experiences, experiencing an Altered State of Consciousness and other alterations of consciousness during a non-psi ganzfeld session, but only among the Highs. The current pre-registered study had a larger N of only Highs, evaluated in hypnosis and hypnosis + ganzfeld procedures. Participants (N = 35) served as “receivers” in two 20 min sessions of ganzfeld or hypnosis in counterbalanced order. Both sessions used hypnosis verbalizations, but only one of them had sensory homogenization. The authors served as “sender” and “experimenter” in different buildings. As an index of experienced alterations of consciousness, participants filled out the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI) at the beginning and end of the sessions, and gave a rating of 0-100 to 4 film clips (one of them the target), from which psi z scores were derived. Overall, participants did not score better than chance and there was no difference between the conditions. However, for the ganzfeld sessions psi scores correlated moderately (r = .40, p = .02) with the PCI Altered State shift scores (ganzfeld - baseline scores). Although the overall psi rate was not significant, we found a relation between psi scoring and experiencing an Altered State in ganzfeld psi sessions.

The field of research on the paranormal has changed enormously in the last 20 years. Examining experiences of extrasensory perception, psychokinesis, precognition, ganzfeld, dissociative states, out-of-the-body experiences, alien abductions and near-death experiences, the book appraises the best available evidence to date on scientific claims of the paranormal. Each chapter also provides a description of the psychological processes that are likely to contribute to these experiences, and to the high prevalence of paranormal beliefs. Importantly, this book does not take a fixed sceptical or 'disbelieving' view of the phenomena but, as far as possible, offers a neutral gaze which will equip readers to make up their own minds, as well as providing them with the critical skills to defend their conclusions. The book is in four parts. Part I is about basic principles, theories and processes. It defines the field of this survey as the 'science of anomaly'; presents a new integrative review and theory of paranormal experience; and discusses some of the key psychological processes that increase our understanding of anomalous experiences and beliefs. Part II is concerned with empirical and theoretical perspectives on some of the best known 'classic' subjective anomalous phenomena that are claimed to be paranormal. Part III concerns three subjectively anomalous experiences that are usually not given paranormal interpretations: the Hypnotic Trance State, Out-Of-Body Experience (OBE) and Near Death Experience (NDE). Part IV provides a conclusion and 'take-home message'. Finally, an Appendix provides concepts, methods and measures which should be helpful to readers wishing to embark upon studies of their own. It is helpful to look at the general terrain of 'anomalistic psychology' both subjective paranormal experiences (SPEs) that are claimed by some authorities to be paranormal and other SPEs not generally claimed to be paranormal, with intriguing differences between the two.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Hypnotic phenomena exhibit significant inter-individual variability, with some individuals consistently demonstrating efficient responses to hypnotic suggestions, while others show limited susceptibility. Recent neurophysiological studies have added to a growing body of research that shows variability in hypnotic susceptibility is linked to distinct neural characteristics. Building on this foundation, our previous work identified that individuals with high and low hypnotic susceptibility can be differentiated based on the arrhythmic activity observed in resting-state electrophysiology (rs-EEG) outside of hypnosis. However, because previous work has largely focused on mean spectral characteristics, our understanding of the variability over time of these features, and how they relate to hypnotic susceptibility, is still limited. Here we address this gap using a time-resolved assessment of rhythmic alpha peaks and arrhythmic components of the EEG spectrum both prior to and following hypnotic induction. Using multivariate pattern classification, we investigated whether these neural features differ between individuals with high and low susceptibility to hypnosis. Specifically, we used multivariate pattern classification to investigate whether these non-stationary neural features could distinguish between individuals with high and low susceptibility to hypnosis before and after a hypnotic induction. Our analytical approach focused on time-resolved spectral decomposition to capture the intricate dynamics of neural oscillations and their non-oscillatory counterpart, as well as Lempel-Ziv complexity. Our results show that variations in the alpha center frequency are indicative of hypnotic susceptibility, but this discrimination is only evident during hypnosis. Highly hypnotic-susceptible individuals exhibit higher variability in alpha peak center frequency. These findings underscore how dynamic changes in neural states related to alpha peak frequency represent a central neurophysiological feature of hypnosis and hypnotic susceptibility.
