In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

Contingent negative variation (CNV) topography, hemispheric asymmetry and time-course were investigated in healthy subjects and non-medicated paranoid schizophrenic patients in two antisaccade paradigms with the short (800-1000 ms) and long (1200-1400 ms) durations of the fixation period. EEG and electrooculogram (EOG) were recorded. Saccade characteristics and mean amplitudes of slow cortical potentials time-locked to peripheral target were analyzed in 23 healthy volunteers and 19 schizophrenic patients. Compared to healthy control subjects, schizophrenic patients had significantly slower antisaccades and committed significantly more erroneous saccades in the both antisaccade tasks. The prolongation of the fixation period resulted in noticeable decrease of error percent in patients group. The analysis of CNV time-course has revealed two distinct stages in both groups. The early CNV stage was represented by a negative wave with the maximal amplitude over midline fronto-central area, and the late stage was characterized by increased CNV amplitude at the midline and left parietal electrode sites. In healthy subjects the simultaneous activation of frontal and parietal areas was observed in the paradigm with the shorter fixation interval; the increase of the fixation period produced consecutive activation of these areas. Schizophrenic patients' CNV amplitude was generally smaller than that of healthy subjects. The most pronounced between-group differences of the negative shift amplitude were revealed at frontal electrode sites during the early CNV stage in both modifications of the antisaccade task. The deficit of frontal activation revealed in patients at the early stage of antisaccade preparatory set in both antisaccadic paradigms may be related to pathogenesis of paranoid schizophrenia.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Data of 41 healthy subjects, 14 volunteers, exposed to dry immersion (DI) and 19 schizophrenic patients were analyzed. Healthy subjects were right-handed males with right (RE) and left (LE) eye dominance, and patients had RE dominance. 2 modifications of antisaccadic task were used. In A1 task fixation period was 800-1000 ms, and in A2 task – 1200-1400 ms. EEG was recorded from 19 sites. Mean amplitude of slow cortical negative potentials (SN) time-locked to peripheral cue onset was evaluated. The saccade characteristics did not depend on task and experimental conditions in healthy RE subjects. In LE subjects percent of errors was lower in A2 task than in A1 one, and increase of errors and saccade latencies was revealed after exposure to DI. Patients performed A2 task better than A1 one, but they exhibited delays in performance of correct saccades and larger number of errors in both tasks compared to healthy subjects. RE subjects demonstrated high level of frontal activation before antisaccades in both tasks. Reduced SN amplitude in frontal region was revealed in LE subjects. The most pronounced decline of SN amplitude in frontal regions was found in patients. Predominant left hemisphere activation was observed during the last 200 ms before peripheral cue in all groups. Changes in cortical activity after DI were similar in RE and LE groups: SN amplitude decreased, and foci of negativity shifted to the right hemisphere. Thus, obtained results (1) support the neurodevelopmental model of cerebral lateralization, (2) demonstrate the independence of basic hemisphere specialization from eyedness, (3) corroborate the important role of frontal disorders in genesis of schizophrenia.

Title:
The effects of simulated microgravity on characteristics of slow presaccadic potentials

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The parameters of saccades and presaccadic slow potentials were studied in seven right-handed male volunteers with a dominant right eye before and after exposure to 6-day dry immersion. Visual stimuli were presented using three light diodes, which were located in the center of the visual field (the central fixation stimulus) and 10° to the right and left of it (peripheral stimuli (PSs)). The subjects performed a test with simple saccades to a PS and a test with antisaccades to the point located symmetrically in the opposite visual field. The EEG (19 monopolar leads) and electrooculogram were recorded. To isolate slow potentials, backward EEG averaging was performed, with the moment of switching on the PS serving as a trigger for the averaging. It was found that the characteristics of saccadic eye movements did not substantially change after exposure to immersion. However, both tests revealed a change in topography and a decrease in the amplitude of presaccadic slow negative potentials (PSNPs) during immersion. Characteristically, the focus of presaccadic negativity shifted to the right hemisphere so that the PSNP amplitude sharply decreased in the left and increased in the right hemisphere. A significant decrease in the PSNP amplitude on day 6 of immersion was found in the midline and left-hemispheric frontal and parietal leads. It may be suggested that, because of support unloading and a decrease in proprioceptive input, exposure to microgravity causes a decrease in the activity of the left hemisphere and prefrontal and parietal cortices, initially involved in preparation and realization of motor responses. The activation of the right hemisphere could be of compensatory character.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
1. A deficit in executing antisaccades is commonly observed in schizophrenia. In addition, one cognitive feature of schizophrenia is a deficit in the ability to reorient attention away from salient events in the periphery. We did not find evidence for abnormal crossmodal attention-capture, using an auditory cue. Relative to control participants, schizophrenic participants generated slower responses when attention was triggered to the other side of the display.
2. Under standard conditions prosaccades are generated more quickly than antisaccades and with fewer errors. However with illusory line motion there was reversed effect, with more correctly directed antisaccades than prosaccades and prosacade latencies were slower than antisaccade latencies. These results support the hypothesis that attentional reorientation is a major factor in the control of antisaccades, and a critical factor in the deficit of antisaccades in schizophrenia.
3. Research on behavioural inhibition in schizophrenia is heavily dependent on the antisaccade task. We have developed a novel task that will enable us to characterise inhibition more precisely. This novel test has the following features: eye movements are naturalistic; (2) Spatial field of inhibition is readily mapped; (3) Temporal duration of inhibition easily measured. Most importantly, the failure of inhibitory control is indexed by faster saccade responses to the critical stimulus display. Thus, in contrast to the majority of available behavioural tasks, a functional impairment in the patients is indexed by ‘better/faster’ performance in this group. This is important because it ensures that any abnormality is not a non-specific effect of poor task compliance, task complexity or poor motivation.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A complex neural problem must be solved before a voluntary eye movement is triggered away from a stimulus (antisaccade). The location code activated by a stimulus must be internally translated into an appropriate signal to direct the eyes into the opposite visual field, while the reflexive tendency to look directly at the stimulus must be suppressed. No doubt these extra processes contribute to the ubiquitous slowing of antisaccades. However, there is no consensus on the cognitive mechanisms that contribute to the antisaccade programme. Visual attention is closely associated with the generation of saccadic eye movements and it has been shown that attention will track an illusion of line motion. A series of experiments combined this illusion with a saccadic eye movement that was congruent (i.e. directed towards), or incongruent with (i.e. direct away from), a peripheral target. Experiment 1 showed that congruent saccades had faster reaction times than incongruent saccades. In contrast, Experiments 2 and 3 demonstrated that, with illusory line motion, incongruent saccades now had faster reaction times than congruent saccades. These findings demonstrate that an illusory phenomenon can accelerate the processing of an incongruent relative to a congruent saccade.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: The aim of the study was the quantitative investigation of the slow negative presaccadic potentials in antisaccadic task depending on eye dominance under normal conditions, during simulated weightlessness and in schizophrenic patients.
METHODS:
Data of 41 healthy subjects, 14 volunteers, exposed to dry immersion (DI) and 19 schizophrenic patients were analyzed. Healthy subjects were right-handed males with right (RE) and left (LE) eye dominance, and patients had RE dominance. 2 modifications of antisaccadic task were used. In A1 task fixation period was 800-1000 ms, and in A2 task – 1200-1400 ms. EEG was recorded from 19 sites. Mean amplitude of slow cortical negative potentials (SN) time-locked to peripheral stimulus (PS) onset was evaluated. 600 ms epoch before PS was used for quantitative evaluation of SN amplitude in A1 task, and 1000 ms - in A2 task. Statistics comprised MANOVA and t-test. Correlations between SN amplitudes and PANSS scales were analyzed in schizophrenic patients.
RESULTS:
The saccade characteristics did not depend on task and experimental conditions in healthy RE subjects. In LE subjects percent of errors was lower in A2 task than in A1 one, and increase of errors and saccade latencies was revealed after exposure to DI. Patients performed A2 task better than A1 one, but they exhibited delays in performance of correct saccades and larger number of errors in both tasks compared to healthy subjects. RE subjects demonstrated high level of frontal activation before antisaccades in both tasks. Reduced SN amplitude in frontal region was revealed in LE subjects. The most pronounced decline of SN amplitude in frontal regions was found in patients. Higher PANSS values corresponded to lower amplitude of SN, and maximal number of correlations was found for Fz and F3 sites. Predominant left hemisphere activation was observed during the last 200 ms before peripheral cue in all groups. Changes in cortical activity after DI were similar in RE and LE groups: SN amplitude decreased, and foci of negativity shifted to the right hemisphere.
CONCLUSIONS:
The obtained results demonstrate the independence of basic hemisphere specialization from eyedness, support the neurodevelopmental model of cerebral lateralization, and corroborate the important role of frontal disorders in genesis of schizophrenia.

Antisaccade task performance and mean amplitudes of slow cortical potentials (contingent negative variation—CNV) were investigated in 19 healthy volunteers, 16 schizophrenic patients (SP), and 12 patients with stereotyped form of paraphilia (PP). Compared with healthy subjects, schizophrenic and paraphilic patients committed significantly more erroneous saccades. The clear between-group CNV differences were observed during the early CNV stage that is associated with cognitive aspects of preparatory set. In SP, as compared to controls, the significant decline of CNV amplitude was found at frontal-central area. PP have demonstrated the lack of CNV over central and parietal regions, but their CNV amplitudes in frontal area did not differ from values of control group. Thus, two distinct types of CNV abnormalities have been found. The SP results have been interpreted as support for frontal dysfunction in schizophrenia. The disconnection between prefrontal cortex, sensorimotor cortex, and related subcortical structures is hypothesized in paraphilia group.
