Impacto da expressão facial na percepção de tempo: papel da valência e da activação
Publication year: 2010
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
The emotional nature of a facial expression seems to distort perception of its duration. In this paper we present a study that tests the hypothesis of this effect be moderated by the emotional dimensions (valence and arousal) by addressing its explanation in terms of processes that interfere with the functioning of an "internal clock", including activation and attentional processes. Using a temporal bisection task with durations of between 400 and 1600 ms, the results suggest a valence effect: the duration of the negative faces is overestimated in relation to positive faces. This effect was moderated by the intensity of emotional expressions (arousal), been clearly observed only in the low arousal condition. In high arousal condition positive and negative faces were identically estimated. The fact that this interaction is found only in short time windows, suggests to us, a concurrent interference in activation and attentional processes. This explanation is discussed in the article, taking into account their limitations.

Interaction between expectancies and drug effects: an experimental investigation of placebo analgesia with caffeine as an active placebo
Publication year: 2011
URL:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21384106
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
RATIONALE:
In a randomised placebo-controlled clinical trial it is assumed that psychosocial effects of the treatment, regression to the mean and spontaneous remission are identical in the drug and placebo group. Consequently, any difference between the groups can be ascribed to the pharmacological effects. Previous studies suggest that side effects of drugs can enhance expectancies of treatment effects in the drug group compared to the placebo group, and thereby increase placebo responses in the drug group compared to the placebo group.
OBJECTIVES:
The hypothesis that side effects of drugs can enhance expectancies and placebo responses was tested.
METHOD:
Painful laser stimuli were delivered to 20 healthy subjects before and after administration of a drink with 0 or 4 mg/kg caffeine. The drink was administered either with information that it contained a painkiller or that it was a placebo. Laser-evoked potentials and reports of pain, expectancy, arousal and stress were measured.
RESULTS:
Four milligrammes per kilogramme of caffeine reduced pain. Information that a painkiller was administered increased the analgesic effect of caffeine compared to caffeine administered with no drug information. This effect was mediated by expectancies. Information and expectancies had no effect on pain intensity when 0 mg/kg was administered.
CONCLUSION:
The analgesic effect of caffeine was increased by information that a painkiller was administered. This was due to an interaction of the pharmacological action of the drug and expectancies. Hence, psychosocial effects accompanying a treatment can differ when an active drug is administered compared to a placebo.

The effect of subject and experimenter gender on pain and placebo analgesia
Publication year: 2007

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Pain report has in several reports been shown to be modulated by the interaction of subject gender with experimenter gender. Our studies showed that male subjects reported less pain to female experimenters compared with pain reported to male experimenters. The social context also modulated subjective reports of stress and arousal, with male subjects reporting less stress and arousal to female experimenters. These findings show the importance of objective measurement of pain and stress, alternatively that relevant controls for social context are used in the experiment.
As the pain report is a central element in placebo analgesia, gender could also play a role in placebo analgesia. Two experiments tested whether gender modulated placebo analgesia induced by verbal information or by classical conditioning.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The present experiment investigated whether administration of placebo affected heart rate variability during heat pain. It was hypothesized that the ratio of low frequent to high frequent (LF/HF) heart rate variability would decrease after administration of an inert substance together with information that it was a powerful painkiller. In a within subjects design, 63 participants (32 females) were tested on two separate days, one day for the placebo condition and one day for control. In the placebo condition, the participants received two capsules containing 75mg lactose each during the second of five pain tests, with information that the capsules were a high dose of a standard analgesic with high pain analgesic effect on heat pain. In the control condition, the same subjects underwent the same five pain tests, but without placebo administration. Pain tests consisted of heat pain (+46C, duration 240 seconds) to the forearm. ECG was recorded continuously. Subjective pain intensity, pain unpleasantness, stress and arousal were measured on VAS scales during each pain test. In addition, mood was measured by the SAM. Results revealed that the LF/HF ratio during painful stimulation decreased significantly in the placebo condition after placebo administration (F (1, 57) = 7.08, p = 0.01). There was lower pain intensity (F (1,62) = 20.53, p = 0.01) in the placebo condition compared to the control condition. Subjective stress during pain was decreased after placebo administration (F (1, 62) = 7.45, p = 0.01), and there was lower subjective stress in the placebo condition compared to the control condition (F (1, 62) = 5.39, p = 0.02). There were no significant effects on pain unpleasantness, arousal or mood. The results from the present experiment suggest that placebo analgesia is accompanied by a reduction in cardiac autonomic activation and a reduction of subjective stress.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
An active placebo is a drug that has subjective side effects, but does not reduce the symptom under investigation. Since the active placebo has subjective effects, it may inform the participant that a drug, and not a placebo, has been administrated. Therefore, it was investigated whether side effects of a drug may provide information that can modulate expectancies towards treatment. Administration of 0 mg/kg bw or 4 mg/kg caffeine was crossed with information that the drink contained a potent painkiller or placebo in a balanced placebo within-subjects design (N=15). Four mg/kg caffeine was administrated to induce side effects, e.g., increased arousal, hypothesized to enhance expectations that an active drug had been administrated. An enhancement of expectations by caffeine, with a consequent increase in the placebo effect, would be evidence that drug side effects could increase the placebo effect. Pain was induced by a Nd:YAP 1340 Stimul laser before, and 30 minutes after administration of the drink. Electroencephalography was recorded from 32 electrodes. The results showed that caffeine heightened arousal, but expectancies of pain reduction were not significantly higher in the active placebo condition compared to the placebo condition. Caffeine did not enhance the credibility of the information, probably because arousal varies during the day and only small changes in arousal were induced by caffeine. Four mg/kg caffeine reduced reported pain, but not P2 amplitude.

Separable effects of stimulus duration and awareness on skin conductance responses to emotional facial expressions
Publication year: 2009

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A subcortical pathway was proposed for rapid threat detection. We investigated whether perception of neutral, happy and angry facial expressions are reflected in the skin conductance response (SCR) at different stimulus durations (12, 24, 35, 170, 2000 msec) and reported awareness levels (unawareness, face detection, emotion discrimination). Additionally, participants (N=17) reported subjective arousal. The SCR magnitude measure showed no differences across emotion type or awareness level. Importantly, it changed across duration, with an emotional (anger + happiness) vs. neutral contrast emerging only at 2000 msec. Conversely, differences in subjective arousal appeared as soon as participants reported emotion discrimination, independent of duration. We suggest the SCR is not a specific marker of unaware threat detection but is dependent on conscious processing.

Skin conductance responses evoked by emotional faces reflect separable stimulus duration and awareness effects
Publication year: 2010

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
It has been shown that faces displaying threat signals can be processed without awareness. This supports the existence of a subcortical pathway for rapid but coarse threat detection including the amygdala.
Here we study whether subliminal perception of faces showing neutral, happiness and anger expressions can elicit changes in the skin conductance response (SCR). Crucially, faces were presented at one of 5 durations (12, 24, 35, 170 and 2000 msec) to account for inter-subject variability in awareness thresholds, being immediately preceded and followed by two scrambled masks (forward + backward masking). In the end of each trial, participants (N=17) had to report the degree of awareness (unawareness of any content - faces and emotional features; face detection, or emotion discrimination), and to make arousal ratings (0 to 5) and valence categorizations (positive, negative or neutral).
The SCR magnitude measure showed no clear differences across emotion type or awareness level. A significant effect emerged only when contrasting emotion (anger + happiness) vs. neutral categories, but only when subjects reported emotion discrimination. No such effect was evident in the lower awareness levels. Importantly, the SCR differed across duration, with the emotion vs. neutral contrast showing significant differences only for the highest (2000 msec) duration. No significant differences were found for any of the shorter durations, not even when awareness was clearly reported (e. g. 165 msec). Conversely, differences in subjective arousal emerged as soon as subjects reported emotion discrimination, independent of duration (e. g. 24 msec).
Our data shows that duration explains modulations of the SCR better than awareness levels. This suggests that the SCR is not a specific measure for threat detection under unaware conditions but that it is dependent on conscious processing and higher cognitive functions.

Temporal cognition changes following mindfulness, but not transcendental meditation practice

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
According to the cognitive-timer model, time estimation is dependent on the interplay between arousal level and attention. This anticipates that higher attention and lower arousal, two features of meditation, will result in a longer time production (P). We tested this hypothesis by using a time production task in two forms of meditation: Mindfulness Meditation (MM, n = 36) and Transcendental Meditation (TM, n = 10), with suitable age- matched controls (n = 12 and n = 9, respectively). The MM group was comprised of three groups (n = 12 each) with varying expertise level, to enable studying a meditation proficiency effect. We tested trait and state effects by using a pre – post meditation design. All three MM groups exhibited longer P compared to their control, as predicted. This was found to be a trait effect, as condition or MM expertise did not affect the results. No significant changes in P were found following prolonged TM practice.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives: The traditional method of induction of emotion in the investigation of mental illness
with affective disorders refers to the display of photographs contained in conventional image
banks. Features like the feeling of presence, immersion and interaction, not to be contemplated in
this type of methodological paradigms, limit the ecological validity and perhaps the emotional
loading. The purpose of this study was to verify whether the intensity of emotional response
induced by 3D is superior to that obtained in 2D traditional paradigms, aiming at its application in
basic and applied research to mental health.
Methods: 30 healthy participants viewed stimuli that induce emotion in two visualization
methods: 2D vs 3D. The visualization of the stimuli was performed in a Virtual Theatre with active
stereoscopic projection using the shutter glasses. The emotional valence was manipulated March 2
conditions - unpleasant vs. neutral vs. pleasant. Each stimulus was displayed for 15sec and sorted
through the pictographic scales Arousal and valence of the Self-Assessment Maniquin (Lang, 1980).
Results: The results showed that visualization of 3D stimuli cause greater arousal responses to
pleasant and unpleasant conditions.
Conclusion: Immersion, presence and possibility of interaction due to stimulation by 3D
technology, are key aspects that can lead to increased intensity of the emotional response of the
subject, approaching it more from the contingencies of real life. Thus, the use of 3D technology
shows great potential for the study of emotion in people with such disorders.

Title:
Disturbed dreaming and the instability of sleep: Altered nonrapid eye movement sleep microstructure in individuals with frequent nightmares as revealed by the cyclic alternating pattern
Publication year: 2013
URL:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23449753
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
STUDY OBJECTIVES:
Nightmares are disturbing mental experiences during sleep that usually result in abrupt awakenings. Frequent nightmares are associated with poor subjective sleep quality, and recent polysomnographic data suggest that nightmare sufferers exhibit impaired sleep continuity during nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Because disrupted sleep might be related to abnormal arousal processes, the goal of this study was to examine polysomnographic arousal-related activities in a group of nightmare sufferers and a healthy control group.
DESIGN:
Sleep microstructure analysis was carried out by scoring the cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) in NREM sleep and the arousal index in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep on the second night of the polysomnographic examination.
SETTING:
Hospital-based sleep research laboratory.
PARTICIPANTS:
There were 17 in the nightmare (NMs) group and 23 in the healthy control (CTLs) group.
INTERVENTIONS:
N/A.
MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS:
The NMs group exhibited reduced amounts of CAP A1 subtype and increased CAP A2 and A3 subtypes, as well as longer duration of CAP A phases in comparison with CTLs. Moreover, these differences remained significant after controlling for the confounding factors of anxious and depressive symptoms. The absolute number and frequency of REM arousals did not differ significantly between the two groups.
CONCLUSIONS:
The results of our study indicate that NREM sleep microstructure is altered during nonsymptomatic nights of nightmares. Disrupted sleep in the NMs group seems to be related to abnormal arousal processes, specifically an imbalance in sleep-promoting and arousing mechanisms during sleep.

Age-dependent changes of thinking about verbs
Publication year: 2017
URL:
https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnbeh.2017.00040/full
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
We investigated the knowledge of emotional and motor verbs in children and adolescents from three age ranges (8-11, 12-15, 16-19 years). Participants estimated the verbs familiarity, age of acquisition, valence, arousal, imageability, and motor- and emotion-relatedness. Participants were familiar with the verbs in our dataset. The younger (8-11) attributed an emotional character to the verbs less frequently than the middle (12-15) and the older (16-19) groups. In the 8-11 group males rated the verbs as emotion-related less frequently than females. Results indicate that processing verbal concepts as emotion-related develops gradually, and after 12-15 is rather stable. The age of acquisition (AoA) develops late: the older (16-19) had a higher awareness in reporting that they learnt the verbs earlier as compared to the estimations made by the younger (8-11 and 12-15). AoA positively correlated with attribution of emotion relatedness meaning that emotion-related verbs were learned later. Arousal was comparable across ages. Also it increased when attributing motor relatedness to verbs and decreased when attributing emotion relatedness. Reporting the verbs' affective valence (happy vs. unhappy) changes with age: younger (8-11) judged the verbs generally more "happy" than both the older groups. Instead the middle and the older group did not show differences. Happiness increased when processing the verbs as motor related and decreased when processing the verbs as emotion related. Age affected imageability: the younger (8-11) considered the verbs easier to be imagined than the two older groups, suggesting that at this age vividness estimation is still rough, while after 12-15 is stable as the 12-15 and 15-19 group did not differ. Imageability predicted arousal, AoA, emotion- and motor-relatedness indicating that this index influences the way verbs are processed. Imageability was positively correlated to emotion relatedness, indicating that such verbs were harder to be imagined, and negatively to motor relatedness. Imageablity positively correlated with valence meaning that verbs receiving positive valence were also those that were hard to be imagined, and negatively correlated with arousal, meaning that verbs that were harder to be imagined elicited low physiological activation. Our results give an insight in the development of emotional and motor-related verbs representations.

The effect of increased parasympathetic activity on perceived duration

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Theories of human temporal perception suggest that changes in physiological arousal distort the perceived duration of events. Behavioural manipulations of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity support this suggestion, however the effects of behavioural manipulations of parasympathetic (PSNS) activity on time perception are unclear. The current study examined the effect of a paced respiration exercise known to increase PSNS activity on sub-second duration estimates. Participants estimated the duration of negatively and neutrally valenced images following a period of normal and paced breathing. PSNS and SNS activity were indexed by high-frequency heart-rate variability and pre-ejection period respectively. Paced breathing increased PSNS activity and reduced the perceived duration of the negative and neutrally valenced stimuli relative to normal breathing. The results show that manipulations of PSNS activity can distort time in the absence of a change in SNS activity. They also suggest that activities which increase PSNS activity may be effective in reducing the perceived duration of short events.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
There are long standing debates in theories of emotion between categorical models of basic emotions (e.g., fear) and models that propose more fundamental affective dimensions (arousal/valence) that may be combined in different ways to give rise to emotions. Neuroscientific research on Facial Expressions of Emotion (FEE) has typically favored basic emotions models, but recent evidence highlights that the affective properties of facial displays are relevant for understanding how the brain processes emotional facial stimuli.
AIMS
The main goal of the project was to investigate the role of affective dimensions in the perception of and neural responses (EEG/ERP) to FEE, while retaining the concept of emotional categories as an important level of analysis. The Predictive Processing framework, that describes brain function in terms of predictions about the inputs that will be received according to existing prior representations, may provide a unifying model of emotional processing, combining categorical and dimensional aspects and overcoming some inconsistencies in the current literature, especially if considered in a developmental perspective.
METHOD
To fulfil this goal, there were several phases in this project. Over the course of the project, we developed novel theoretical accounts applying Predictive Processing models to Affective Neuroscience and Emotional Development. In terms of empirical studies, Phase 1 included three studies designed to assess how affective dimensions, such as arousal and valence, relate to (1) other facial features like the typicality of the face, (2) the presence of emotional or non-emotional content, and (3) emotional intensity. Phase 2 consisted of a cross-sectional study to assess the developmental evolution of FEE processing, covering over 100 children between 4 and 15 years old. We used self-reported affective ratings and event-related potentials (ERP) to examine the effects of emotional categories and affective properties of facial expressions.
RESULTS
The general trend of the results across studies in Phase 1 suggested that the arousal/emotional intensity of facial displays is an important influence on electrophysiological responses in adults. This corroborates previous findings from our groups supporting that arousal, rather than emotional categories, drives early visual cortical responses to facial expressions. In Phase 2, the developmental results suggest that children are initially more sensitive to differences in the valence of facial expressions, while adolescents show a transitional pattern that resembles neither childhood nor adulthood.
CONCLUSIONS
The affective dimensions of valence and arousal of FEE appear to be crucial to understanding how the brain processes facial displays. Children, adolescents, and adults show different neurophysiological responses to these affective dimensions that seem to configure a developmental trajectory: children seem to be more sensitive to the valence of FEE while adults appear more responsive to the level of arousal of the expression, and adolescents seem to show an intermediate pattern of results. These findings are consistent with a Predictive Processing account, in which the accumulated experience across development gradually changes the neural systems subserving the perception of FEE.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BCKGROUND: In sleep electroencephalographic (EEG) signals, artifacts and arousals marking are usually part of the processing. This visual inspection by a human expert has two main drawbacks: it is very time consuming add subjective.
NEW METHOD: To detect artifacts and arousals in a reliable, systematic and reproducible automatic way, we developed an automatic detection based on time and frequency analysis with adapted thresholds derived from data themselves.
RESULTS: The automatic detection performance is assessed using 5 statistic parameters, on 60 whole night sleep recordings coming from 35 healthy volunteers (male and female) aged between 19 and 26. The proposed approach proves its robustness against inter- and intra-, subjects and raters' scorings, variability. The agreement with human raters is rated overall from substantial to excellent and provides a significantly more reliable method than between human raters.
COMPARISON: Existing methods detect only specific artifacts or only arousals, and/or these methods are validated on short episodes of sleep recordings, making it difficult to compare with our whole night results. Conclusion: The method works on a whole night recording and is fully automatic, reproducible, and reliable. Furthermore the implementation of the method will be made available online as open source code.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The neural bases of affective experience remain elusive. Early neuroscience models of affect searched for specific brain regions that uniquely carried out the computations that underlie dimensions of valence and arousal. However, a growing body of work has failed to identify these circuits. Research turned to multivariate analyses, but these strategies, too, have made limited progress. Predictive processing models offer exciting new directions to address this problem. Here, we use predictive processing models as a lens to critique prevailing functional neuroimaging research practices in affective neuroscience. Our review highlights how much work relies on rigid assumptions that are inconsistent with a predictive processing approach. We outline the central tenets of a predictive processing model and draw out their implications for research in affective and cognitive neuroscience. Predictive models motivate a reformulation of “reverse inference” in cognitive neuroscience, and placing a greater emphasis on external validity in experimental design.

Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Background
The Rhine Bioenergy Lab measures ultra-weak photon emissions (UPE) from participants during intentional focus. 5 selected participants demonstrated the ability to produce UPE, but their physiology was never measured during these activities.
Aims
The study will first attempt to confirm that participants can intentionally produce UPE. Second, we will explore specific physiological measures for correlations with strong UPE expressions, and whether these indicate states of arousal.
Method
Following methods that have been used in the bioenergy lab for 12 years, we determined if participants produced more UPE during periods of focus than resting periods. Each session lasted approximately 20 minutes with 10 minutes of rest and 10 minutes of activity.
Five participants completed 50 sessions. Expressions of UPE were measured with five physiological factors: electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration (RES), electrodermal activity (EDA), skin temperature (TEMP), and blood flow (FLOW). Heart rate variance (HRV) and heart rate per minute (HR) were also calculated.
Analyses explored correlations between increasing of UPE and these physiological factors.
Results
Strong evidence of intentional production of UPE was found in six-sigma events in 16/50 sessions.
Higher UPE expression was correlated with increasing HR, TEMP, and decreasing FLOW, HRV. These are indicative of a possible state of increased arousal during moments of increased UPE activity.
Conclusions
Experienced participants can intentionally produce UPE, and they appear to be in a state of arousal when the increase in UPE occurs. Further study of arousal will allow better correlations between moods, strong emotions, and physiology to determine if they are correlated with UPE expression.
