Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

During the last decade the role of high frequency EEG activity in the ‘binding phenomenon’ was discovered. It was supposed that this phenomenon provided the integration between different brain structures underlying higher nervous functions and possibly even consciousness [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 90 (1993) 2078; Annu. Rev. Neurosci. 18 (1995) 555; J. Neurosci. V 16 (1996) 4240; Am. Physiol. Soc. (1998) 1567; Induced Rhythms in the Brain (1992) 425; NeuroReport 8 (1997) 531; Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 94 (1997) 12198]. Schizophrenia is considered as a disorder of the integration between different brain regions [Review of Psychiatry 18 (1999a) 29; Conceptual Advances in Russian Neuroscience: Complex Brain Functions (1999) 151; Brain Res. Rev. 31 (2000) 301], and in the present work we have studied cortical connectivity, focusing on those connections which are maintained by high frequency EEG-rhythm (20–40 Hz). The results showed a high degree of biopotential synchronisation between definite cortical areas during cognitive processes in normal subjects and have evidenced significant functional connectivity disturbances in schizophrenia in this EEG frequency domain.

It has often been postulated that asymmetries in performance within the visual field (VF) are not characteristic of early visual processing. Here, human retinal (naso/temporal), cortical (left/right) and superior/inferior patterns of asymmetry were explored with achromatic contrast sensitivity (CS) tasks, that probed distinct spatiotemporal frequency channels. Low spatial, high temporal frequency stimuli (illusory frequency-doubling (FD)) yielded superior and temporal field disadvantage. Independent right and nasal visual hemifield patterns of disadvantage were found when probing an intermediate spatial frequency (ISF) channel, with stationary sinusoidal gratings. These findings show that asymmetries in spatial vision are explained by independent retinal and cortical mechanisms.

Sex differences for depression in prevalence and symptom profile may in part be due to differences between men and women in brain dysfunction associated with the disorder. Changes in event-related potential (ERP) measures similar to those seen in clinical populations are reported in subclinical or premorbid forms of depression. The current study investigates sex differences in ERPs associated with subclinical depression. One-hundred-and-forty healthy, right-handed adults (aged 20–60 years; screened to exclude clinical depression and psychosis) completed an auditory oddball task and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS). Seventy (n=35 men) subclinically depressed (SD) (i.e. scoring >2 for depression on DASS) participants were matched for age and education with 70 (n=35 men) participants showing no signs of depression (ND). Repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance was used to test for differences in N200 and P300 amplitude between SD and ND groups. ND, but not SD groups had asymmetry (R>L) of central N200 amplitude. Similar asymmetry was seen in ND, but not SD men at posterior sites. SD groups demonstrated left>right posterior P300 amplitude asymmetry due to P300 enhancement at left temporoparietal sites. Results support involvement of various cognitive mechanisms measured by P300 and N200 in subclinical depressive symptoms some of which may rely on sex.
