The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
This study aimed to assess the quality of the attachment relation between infant-mother (N= 31 dyads) during the Strange Situation and to examine their heart-rate (through the Holter – Mortara, PR, 4) during this experimental procedure.
Fourteen infants were classified as secure (B pattern), 10 as insecure-avoidant (A group) and 7 as insecure-resistant (C group). This distribution is similar to those found in other studies with middle class and low risk samples. No significant differences were found among the attachment patterns in terms of the infant’ s cardiac baseline. However, significant differences were found between secure and insecure groups in terms of their heart-rate during the Strange Situation: the ambivalent babies (C group) showing an increase especially in the two separation episodes (5 and 8).
In general, similarities were found between insecure-avoidant and secure babies (for instance, a decrease of their heart-rate - in episode 7 - when they are together with the stranger and after being alone in episode 6) but the former showed an increase in their heart-rate during the second reunion with their mothers (episode 8). No relations were found between the mother’s and infant’s heart-rate and the attachment patterns.

Based on recent technological advances, we developed (Bial Grant 43/96), a fully digital multimedia system named BioDReAMS (Bio Dual-channel and Representation of Attachment Multimedia System) that allows a synchronous collection of video and audio information, ECG signals and skin conductance during the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). The present project aims:1) to improve BioDReAMS, by developing a new version; 2) to apply BioDReAMS 2.0 to a non-clinical group of 50 young females that will be compared to a matched clinical eating disorders sample.
BioDReAMS 2.0 improved at data acquisition, video, program structure, and document mode.
Data from 50 females, between 15-36 years old (M=21.82; D.P.=4.92), from different educational and occupational backgrounds has been collected. Eleven subjects were matched, based on social-demographical information, with 11 patients diagnosed with eating disorders. The AAI scored with Kobak’s Q-Sort method was used to assess 3 attachment patterns, mega-items and deactivation-hyperactivation strategies. The relations between these attachment parameters and two physiological measures, heart rate (HR) and skin conductance level (SCL), during the AAI, were examined using BioDReAMS 2.0.
Within the non-clinical group, 33 were classified as secure, 11 as dismissing, and 6 as preoccupied. In the clinical sample, 4 patients were secure, 4 preoccupied and 3 dismissing. Compared to the non-clinical, the clinical group showed higher scores in family disruption, preoccupied, and family enmeshment mega-items. Non-clinical subjects showed increased sympathetic activity when talking about problems, separations, and deaths, compared to their resting baseline. Insecure subjects showed tendencies for highest parasympathetic activity when talking about threats. In the clinical sample, moderate to high correlations were found between deactivation and increased parasympathetic activity in the response to problems, separations, rejections, deaths, and traumatic experiences.

Within attachment research, the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) is a well-known procedure to assess working models of attachment in adults. Attachment patterns assessed through AAI have been conceived as different strategies to regulate the access to relevant attachment information and to process distress-related information. The psycho-physiological activation led by emotional processing of attachment experiences during the AAI procedure may be a critical factor in order to understand the subject's attachment strategies. Due to great progress in IT industry, we could develop low-cost PC-based digital system for the AAI procedure, achieving a more comprehensive approach than the traditional assessment approach. Exploring some of the newest technologies in computers, we have developed the second generation of BioDReAMS (Bio-Dual channel and Representation of Attachment Multimedia System), which is a system for assessment attachment strategies and physiological measures during the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). It runs under Windows XP environment and implements the concept framework of physiological measures and AAI assessment including synchronous ECG, skin conductance, video audio data acquisition, store and rating documentation workflow. The new BioDreAMS system supports seamless biosignal and video acquisition over 10 h which can satisfy long-time AAI procedure. New BioDreAMS has greatly enhanced over the previous one in data acquisition, backup, processing and analysis, which makes it easier for the raters to analyse and evaluate psychological and physiological events during review and to explore possible relations. In our presentation, we will show how BioDReAMS works in a real situation. This project is partly supported by Fundação Bial, grant 25?2 and FCT, grant SFRHBPD9383?2, under the POSI program with support of FEDER.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Reunion behavior following stressful separations from caregivers is often considered the single most sensitive clue to infant attachment patterns. Extending these ideas to middle childhood/early adolescence, we examined participants' neural responses to reunion with peers who had previously excluded them. We recorded event-related potentials among nineteen 11- to 15-year-old youth previously classified on attachment interviews (11 secure and 8 insecure-dismissing) while they played a virtual ball-toss game (Cyberball) with peers that involved fair play, exclusion and reunion phases. Compared to secure participants, dismissing participants displayed a greater increment in the N2 during reunion relative to fair play, a neural marker commonly linked to expectancy violation. These data suggest a greater tendency toward continued expectations of rejection among dismissing children, even after cessation of social exclusion. In turn, the link between self-reported ostracism distress and neural signs of negative expectancy at reunion was moderated by attachment, such that self-reports were discordant with the neural index of expectancy violation for dismissing, but not for secure children.
