Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Studies concerning time perception lack a validated assessment tool and a consensual “gold-standard” measure. Moreover, the present evidence suggests modification of timing with aging. This study aimed to develop and validate a neuropsychological tool to measure time perception and to study temporal perception with aging. Eighty-six healthy participants, aged 15–90 years old, were asked to verbally estimate and produce empty intervals signaled by auditory beeps, of 7-, 32-, and 58-s duration. Two tests were used as “gold-standards”: estimation of the duration of time necessary to draw a clock (“clock time”) and estimation of the duration of neuropsychological evaluation (“global time”). Results showed a correlation between estimation and production (p < .01) and a correlation between estimation or production and “global time” (p < .01). The correlation between either estimation or production and age (p < .01), suggested a faster “internal-clock” in the older participants. However, this finding lost significance when controlled for literacy. The results suggest that these tests are potentially a useful tool to measure subjective perception of time. They also corroborate the hypothesis of a change in subjective time perception with aging. It was not possible to conclude if this effect was a specific result of aging or biased by the interference of literacy.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVE:
To study behavioral correlates of theta oscillations in infants and preschool children.
METHODS:
EEG was recorded during baseline (visual attention) and two test conditions—exploration of toys and attention to ‘social’ stimulation. Age specific frequency boundaries of theta and mu rhythms were assessed using narrow bin analysis of EEG spectra.
RESULTS:
Theta spectral power increased whereas mu power decreased under test conditions in both age groups. In preschoolers theta rhythm increased predominantly over anterior regions during exploratory behavior and over posterior regions during attention to social stimulation. Theta frequency range changed with age from 3.6 to 5.6Hz in infants to 4–8Hz in children, and mu range from 6.4–8.4Hz to 8.4–10.4Hz.
CONCLUSIONS:
In early life, theta oscillations are strongly related to behavioral states with substantial attentional and emotional load. The scalp distribution of theta spectral power depends on age and behavioral condition and may reflect engagement of different brain networks in control of behavior.
SIGNIFICANCE:
The findings contribute to the scanty knowledge about the developmental course of theta rhythm. Data on behavioral correlates of theta rhythm in early life may improve our understanding of cognitive and mental processes in healthy and neuropsychiatrically diseased children.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
1. A deficit in executing antisaccades is commonly observed in schizophrenia. In addition, one cognitive feature of schizophrenia is a deficit in the ability to reorient attention away from salient events in the periphery. We did not find evidence for abnormal crossmodal attention-capture, using an auditory cue. Relative to control participants, schizophrenic participants generated slower responses when attention was triggered to the other side of the display.
2. Under standard conditions prosaccades are generated more quickly than antisaccades and with fewer errors. However with illusory line motion there was reversed effect, with more correctly directed antisaccades than prosaccades and prosacade latencies were slower than antisaccade latencies. These results support the hypothesis that attentional reorientation is a major factor in the control of antisaccades, and a critical factor in the deficit of antisaccades in schizophrenia.
3. Research on behavioural inhibition in schizophrenia is heavily dependent on the antisaccade task. We have developed a novel task that will enable us to characterise inhibition more precisely. This novel test has the following features: eye movements are naturalistic; (2) Spatial field of inhibition is readily mapped; (3) Temporal duration of inhibition easily measured. Most importantly, the failure of inhibitory control is indexed by faster saccade responses to the critical stimulus display. Thus, in contrast to the majority of available behavioural tasks, a functional impairment in the patients is indexed by ‘better/faster’ performance in this group. This is important because it ensures that any abnormality is not a non-specific effect of poor task compliance, task complexity or poor motivation.

A series of experiments were conducted to examine the inhibitory effect of a visual distracter on saccadic eye movements. Participants were presented with a sequence of two critical displays. In one display a red target was presented together with a green distracter. This was followed by a display with a new red target presented in isolation at one of three locations with respect to the previous display. The lone target was presented either at the location of the recent target, the location of the recent distracter, or a new location. Participants were instructed to fixate the target in both displays and to ignore the green distracter. Experiment 1 revealed a significant increase in saccadic reaction times (SRTs) when the target was presented at the location of the recent distracter. Experiment 2 revealed that SRTs increased only in the conditions where the new target was presented at the location of the recent distracter, irrespective of its colour. Experiment 3 found that the inhibitory effect lasted for at least 2 s. In Experiment 4 the inhibitory effect was abolished when a lone distracter (i.e., anti-target) was presented without a target. Experiments 5 and 6 revealed that inhibition at the location of the recent target (‘inhibition-of-return’) also emerged with a shorter inter-display interval and when the distracter was removed from the recent display. These results distinguished between inhibition of a recent distracter and ‘inhibition-of-return’ and are consistent with models of competitive interactions which generate inhibitory effects on the spatial representation of a distracter.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Event-related potentials analysed in consecutive studies led us to the following findings: a) the perception of fear from faces is gated by selective attention at early latencies, whereas only after 480 ms was the perception of disgust modulated by attention allocation; b) the order of presentation of external and internal facial features influence the integration of facial components into face gestalts, so that the external features may be especially relevant for initial object categorization while internal features would be more closely related to subsequent configural mechanisms; c) the verbal N400 wave was distinguished from its functional analogue during the processing of faces in a contextual preactivation task, which showed a predominantly occipital localization and differentiated neural generators; d) N400-like components elicited in a face-feature matching task revealed a larger and longer-lasting N400 effect with the prior presentation of internal features around 300-400 ms post-stimulus, involving a greater activation of frontal and left temporal brain areas; e) both explicit and implicit processing of famous faces resulted in an enhanced N250 whereas explicit processing was specifically associated with earlier N400 and P600, related to an increased activity within brain areas involved in identity processing around 250 and 450 ms; and f) the processing of familiar vs. unfamiliar faces in the face-feature matching task revealed that the so-called “internal features advantage” relies on the use of stored face-identity-related information around 300-600 ms, involving an incremented activity elicited by familiar stimuli in both posterior (ventral occipitotemporal) and more anterior (parahippocampal and orbitofrontal) brain regions.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to investigate the role of attention on the processing of facial expressions of fear and disgust. Stimuli consisted of overlapping pictures of a face and a house. Participants had to monitor repetitions of faces or houses, in separate blocks of trials, so that object-based attention was manipulated while spatial attention was kept constant. Faces varied in expression and could be either fearful or neutral (in the fear condition) or disgusted or neutral (in the disgust condition). When attending to faces, participants were required to signal repetitions of the same person, with the facial expressions being completely irrelevant to the task. Different effects of selective attention and different patterns of brain activity were observed for faces with fear and disgust expressions. Results indicated that the perception of fear from faces is gated by selective attention at early latencies, whereas a sustained positivity for fearful faces compared to neutral faces emerged around 160 ms at central–parietal sites, independent of selective attention. In the case of disgust, ERP differences began only around 160 ms after stimulus onset, and only after 480 ms was the perception of disgust modulated by attention allocation. Results are interpreted in terms of different neural mechanisms for the perception of fear and disgust and related to the functional significance of these two emotions for the survival of the organism.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Adaptive social behavior requires perceiving and flexible processing of changing facial expressions that
convey different socio-affective meanings. Although a more conscious processing and effortful interpretation of some facial expressions, such as disgust, may be required, certain facial expressions, such as fear, may be processed in a rapid, more automatic, way. To advance in this issue, event-related potentials were used to investigate the effects of attention and emotion expression on face processing in the brain. The emotion facial expressions that were examined were the prototypical of different basic emotions (fear, disgust, happiness, surprise, anger and sadness). Stimuli consisted of a house and a face transparently superimposed. Participants were instructed to attend to either the face or the house, in different emotion expression conditions, in order to signal consecutive repetitions of the same person or the same house in separate blocks of trials. The emotional nature of the faces was not relevant to the task. Different effects of attention and different spatio-temporal patterns of brain electrical activity were observed for faces with distinct emotion facial expressions. Results showed that the processing of distinct emotion from faces is gated by attention allocation at different latencies and associated with different neural responses. We conclude that
different brain mechanisms underlie the perception of distinct basic emotion facial expressions.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The aim of the research project was to investigate whether a brief daily mindfulness meditation practice can contribute to an improvement of attentional functions and changes in the underlying brain networks.
Towards this end we conducted a longitudinal EEG study with randomized control group design that assessed the modification of attentional functions after 16 weeks of mindfulness meditation practice. At baseline participants were allocated to a meditation (MG) or a wait-list control group (CG). The MG received three hours mindfulness meditation training and were requested to meditate daily for ten minutes for the next 16 weeks. At baseline, after 8 weeks and after 16 weeks, participants performed computerized tasks that address attentional control mechanisms, while the 64-channel EEG was recorded.
The analysis of the event-related potentials (ERP) of the EEG confirmed that regular mindfulness practice influences brain mechanisms of attentional control evidenced by differences between the MG and CG in ERP components that indicate inhibitory, resource allocation and conflict monitoring processes. Importantly, also the levels of self reported mindfulness (assessed with the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire) increased significantly in the MG compared to the CG. This increase was positively correlated with the self-reported amount of meditation practice.
Consistent with recent findings, the pattern of results suggests that mindfulness practice may be associated with a more even distribution of limited attentional resources and more efficient conflict monitoring.
