An investigation of mediums who claim to give information about deceased persons
Publication year: 2011

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Growing public interest in the phenomenon of mediumship, particularly among bereaved persons, suggests the need for renewed controlled studies of mediums, both to provide potential clients with criteria for judging mediums and to help researchers learn whether they can produce specific and accurate information to which they have had no normal access and, if so, under what conditions. Two research studies were conducted in which mediums provided readings about particular deceased persons to a proxy sitter. The real sitters then blindly rated the reading that was intended for them along with several control readings. In the first study, the results were not significant. In the second, much larger study the results were highly significant (z = -3.89, p < 0.0001, 2-tailed). The authors discuss 2 possible weaknesses of the successful study and indicate some directions for further research.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Researchers have reported that bereaved people often continue to sense the presence of the deceased. A particular collection of such experiences can be identified as instilling a perception that the deceased person is in some manner present in the company of the bereaved person. The aim of the current review was to synthesise the results on this topic to provide a comprehensive over-view for practitioners working with bereaved people who report these experiences. The studies were reviewed in terms of the nature of the experiences described, the provision of explanatory models to understand the significance of these experiences, describing any culturally specific aspects of these experiences, discussion of the personal impact of having the experiences, and for recommendations of how people who have these experiences can be supported.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The present study sought to explore the meaning-making people engage in with regard to their experience of sensing the presence of the deceased and to focus on the experience of sensing the presence of the deceased through one of the sensory modalities. Interviews were carried out with eight bereaved adults. Transcripts were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Analysis identified four superordinate themes. ‘There’s only one person that ever did that’: Sense of presence as a unique and personally distinctive experience referred to participants’ descriptions of the nature of the experiences reflecting the character of the deceased person or aspects of their relationship. ‘I do believe in all that, I’ve experienced it beforehand’: Prior beliefs and understanding sense of presence consisted of the process participants used to try and make sense of their experiences. ‘It’s not frightening anymore’: The changing emotional impact of the experience explored the different emotional impacts of the experiences. ‘They will look at you like you’re crazy’: The importance of sense-of-presence experiences being validated by others referred to concerns about being stigmatised by others as a result of the experiences as well as positive self-perceptions. The themes are interpreted in the context of previous literature and novel ideas about meaning-making and positive self-perceptions are highlighted. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
There is a lack of research examining the mental health of practicing mediums, yet the nature of mediumship work inherently presents a number of challenges to the mental health of practitioners. In this study, we aimed to gain an understanding of how mediums experience their mental health in relation to their mediumistic practice and how they recognise and respond to psychological difficulties experienced by their clients. Fourteen mediums from the North West of England took part in one-to-one interviews, which were transcribed and subject to interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four themes were identified: from past traumas to mediumistic identity; spirit makes sense, mental illness is chaos; being resilient but vulnerable; and ethical mediumistic practice. The research highlights the value of not dismissing or attempting to change appraisals of valued aspects of mediums’ anomalous experiences. However, the findings do indicate that support for exposure to clients’ difficulties might be helpful.

Limits and meanings to the challenging territoy of mediumship: A qualitative study with grievers
Publication year: 2022

Abstract/Results: Abstract
The loss of a loved one causes great upheaval in people’s lives, and the bereaved may turn to unconventional methods to feel closer to the deceased, such as relying on a medium. The aim of this study was to investigate this experience and its effects. A qualitative research design involving five participants was applied through interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four main thematic areas emerged: the motivations that led participants to seek support from a medium, their experiences during the encounter, friends’ and relatives’ views on mediumship, and changes in the grieving process. Despite the various reasons that led the bereaved to ask for a mediumistic consultation, almost all participants believe the experience helped them overcome their grief.

Final report - Investigation of the phenomenology and impact of spontaneous and direct After-Death Communications (ADCs)
Publication year: 2023
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Background
An ADC occurs when a person unexpectedly perceives a deceased person in a manner that is interpreted as indicative of the continued survival of some aspect of that person. Such experiences are common in the general population, particularly following bereavement, but are poorly understood. More detailed mapping of the phenomenology, circumstances and impacts of ADCs will enable the explanations that have been proposed to be evaluated more thoroughly.
Aims
Our objectives were to interrogate cases of ADCs reported to us by the general public, analyzing already-collected data from English, French, and Spanish language groups, focusing especially on material that putatively supports the survival interpretation, such as cases involving multiple witnesses, or ADCs that provided previously unknown information to the percipient. We also aimed to launch additional versions of the survey in German, Dutch, and Chinese.
Method
Mixed methods analysis of the original multinational survey to describe the phenomenology of ADCs, with a particular focus on cases that might provide more direct evidence that would bear on the question of survival. Development and implementation of new surveys using the JISC platform.
Results
The original database comprises 994 ADC cases. Papers have been published that report on prevalence of different ADC types, and observing that they commonly occur among people without a mental health diagnosis or other comorbidity. We have also reported on the impacts of ADCs upon the percipient’s religiosity, spirituality, and attitude towards biological death.
Conclusions
The analyses conducted reflect a growing awareness within the clinical parapsychology community that anomalous experiences are not usually distressing per se, but rather the negative reactions of others can have adverse effects upon the experiencer’s health and wellbeing. An important purpose of the project is to normalize ADCs so as to enable percipients to feel able to disclose them to others without fear of ridicule or pathologisation. In this way, they may be enabled to reflect on and process their experiences in ways that are compatible with their personal belief system so as to promote integration and growth.

Description and impact of encounters with deceased partners or spouses

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study investigates perceived interactions with the deceased, a phenomenon reported across societies, with 30-34% of individuals likely experiencing at least one ADC in their lifetime. Despite this prevalence, studies examining the impact of ADCs' on those who have lost partners are limited. We present data from 70 individuals reporting partner ADCs via an online survey. Forty percent reported accelerated recovery and 42.9% confirm the ADCs' significant influence in their grieving, with 61% expressing a desire for continued contact. ADCs, interestingly, didn't worsen their pain. The influence on grief-related sadness varied: 41% noted no change, while 40% reported reduced sadness. Forty-seven percent acknowledged ADCs eased their loss acceptance. The data highlight ADCs' substantial, potentially therapeutic role in grief and healing, despite varying effects on sadness and recovery. This study underscores the ADCs' possible positive influence on bereaved partners, advocating for a deeper understanding of this phenomenon in the grieving process.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Few studies have focused on the point of view of individuals who claim to possess mediumistic abilities. The present study aimed to explore these experiences, including the onset and hypothetical development of such abilities, the modalities in which mediumistic sessions occur, and the ethical value attributed by mediums to their abilities, as well as the relationship they establish with those who are grieving. Data were collected from nine Italian mediums (all female, mean 58; SD = 11). Semi-structured interviews were realised following Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The collected data were processed using Thematic Analysis. Three main thematic areas emerged from the analysis: 'Onset and development of mediumistic abilities', 'Channelling process and modalities', and 'Relationship with grievers and ethical dimension'. The results revealed a wide range of experiences related to the onset and development of similar abilities, although the occurrence of losses and grief in childhood and/or adulthood often emerged as a significant motivational factor. Different approaches to conducting mediumistic sessions were also identified. Participants emphasised the high ethical value they ascribed to their abilities as a means of alleviating the suffering of those who are grieving.

Final report - Italian research group on mediumship. Mediumistic abilities testing protocol
Publication year: 2024
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Background
The present project moves inside the context of mediumship, that is, the ability,
reported by some people (defined as “mediums”) to communicate with the deceased or in general to make contact with non-physical entities or realities, with the aim to obtain some information otherwise impossible to know, through clairaudience, clairvoyance, telepathy or precognition. To the present day, the phenomenon appears to be so complex that it does not have a single definition.
Believing in life after death is of vital importance for many people, both for some religious reasons, and because it can promote the psychological wellbeing of bereaved people or of those who are affected by a serious illness and have therefore to face the end-of-life.
Aims
To study in a rigorous way mediumistic abilities through a quantitative and qualitative mixed-method approach.
Method
Two quantitative and two qualitative studies were carried out.
In the two quantitative studies (Tressoldi, Liberale, & Sinesio, 2022; Tressoldi, Liberale, & Sinesio, 2024) we applied a triple-blind protocol, with the mediums, and the proxy-sitters blind about the deceased information and the sitters blind about which of two readings is related to their deceased person.
In the two qualitative studies (Testoni, Pompele, Liberale & Tressoldi, 2022; Testoni, Pompele & Liberale, 2023), we applied individual interviews whosecontents were analyzed applying the Thematic Analysis procedure.
Results
The two quantitative studies confirmed that some self-defined mediums, are able to achieve correct information related to a specific deceased person having at disposal only his/her first name and without any possibility to retrieve this information by using conventional means.
The two qualitative studies offered a rich representation of both the experience of grievers as a consequence of a mediumship consultation and of “being” mediums.
Conclusions
Both the quantitative and qualitative results of the studies offer valuable information about mediumship and may be used as a motivating factor for others to replicate and extend the findings of this study with other samples of participants in different cultural contexts.

Final report - Transpersonal imagery and bereavement: The psychomanteum and virtual reality
Publication year: 2024
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
In an effort to further the field of transpersonal psychology, research was undertaken to explore transpersonal experiences through the use of the psychomantium, a sensory deprivation procedure that focuses on grief and transformation. Two aims were addressed: (1) the level of absorption in the psychomantium would impact grief; (2) there would be a difference in the outcomes of grief for a physical psychomantium chamber and a virtual reality psychomantium experience. A significant correlation between absorption and grief was found while the differences in the chamber/vr were not significant. While some participants reported a relaxing effect from the psychomantium experiences, others reported a range of sensory experiences, including visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and emotional. For those in the high absorption category, the impact of the experience revealed transpersonal insights that appeared to transform fear of death to a realization of grief and a release of emotions. Transformations were also reported by the experimenters.
