    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character

Abstract/Results: RESUMO:

Dream recall, REMs and spectral EEG components in blind and sighted
Publication year: 2002

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
To evaluate the EEG spectral content and rapid eye movements (REMs) associated with dream recall in sighted subjects and congenital blind.
METHODS:
10 congenital blind (CB) subjects (age: 28.2 ± 5.2; five males and five females) were studied and compared with a control sighted group(CS) (age: 28.2 ± 5.5; three males and five females). In all subjects medical or psychiatric diseases were excluded. During two consecutive nights polysomnographic recordings were performed at subjects home; both groups were subjected to periodic awakenings (period ¼ 90 min) and requested to dictate any dream recall to a voice activated tape recorder. For this study, only REM sleepawakenin gs were selected, whenever they were preceded by a stable REM epoch of at least 5 min duration. Power spectra were obtained for C4-A1 and O2-A1 EEG channels, by means of the Fast Fourier Transform and values from conventional EEG bands were selected; REMs were detected by visual inspection on both EOG channels (EOG-H, EOG-V) and further classified as occurring isolated or in bursts. Dream recall was defined by the existence of a dream report. The two groups were compared using t-test and also the two-way anova and a posthoc Fisher test (for the features diagnosis (blind vs. sighted) and dream
recall (yes or no) as a function of time).
RESULTS:
REM awakenings were obtained in 10 CB and six CS subjects. The average of REM awakenings per subject and the recall ability were identical in both groups (REM awakenings: 1.6 for CB and 1.7 for CS; 60% of recall in both groups). CB had a lower REM density than CS (CB: 3.7 ± 3.4 vs. CS: 17. 4) ± 8.5; t ¼ )5.622; P < 0.0001); the same applied toREMbursts (P ¼ 0.0001) and isolated eye movements (P ¼ 0.0015). In the two-way anova, REM bursts and REM density were significantly different for positive dream recall (P ¼ 0.0125 and 0.0082, respectively), mainly for the CB group and for diagnosis (P ¼ 0.001 and 0.0002, respectively); furthermore for both features significant results were obtained for the interaction of time, recall and diagnosis (P ¼ 0.0139 and 0.0191, respectively); the interaction of recall and time was however, stronger (P ¼ 0.0089 and 0.0074). Spectral EEG bands: Higher delta power in O2 was associated with no dream recall (P ¼ 0.0279), whereas higher sigma was associated with the presence of dream recall both in C4 and O2 (P ¼ 0.0092 and 0.0012, respectively). Furthermore, in C4 the differences obtained concerned mainly the two diagnostic groups with CB having higher values of delta (P ¼ 0.0268), theta (P ¼ 0.0083) and sigma activity
(P ¼ 0.025) and CS higher values of alpha (P ¼ 0.0014) and beta activity (P ¼ 0.0072).
CONCLUSIONS:
In line with previous findings the data show that blind have lower REMs density. Both groups have also differences in the C4 spectral EEG components of REM preawakening epochs: CB showed an increase in the lower frequency bands (delta and theta) and in sigma activity (spindles) and CS have higher fast activities (alpha and beta). However the ability of dream recall in Congenital blind and Sighted controls is identical. In both groups dream recall is associated with an increase in REM bursts and density, higher sigma activity in C4 and O2 and lower delta activity in O2. REM bursts also show differences in the temporal profile. REM dream recall is associated with changes in EEG frequencies and increased REMs activity.

Abstract/Results: RESUMO:

Psi as compensation for modality impairment: A replication study using sighted and blind participants
Publication year: 2007
URL:
http://ejp.wyrdwise.com/
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A replication study of an earlier study by Storm and Thalbourne (2001) was conducted to test the hypothesis that blind people compensate for their impairment by developing superior psi ability compared to sighted people. Participants had to describe a concealed line drawing (target), and then rank four drawings (1 target + 3 decoys) from 'most likely' to be the target to 'least likely'. The concealed picture was removed from its envelope and assigned its corresponding rank. A significant psi effect was found for the whole sample, and for the sighted sub-sample, but not the vision-impaired sub-sample. An above-chance success-rate of 28% (p=.54, where pMCE=.50) was found for the totally blind, which was superior (not significantly) to the rest of the sample (i.e., sighted + partially sighted participants) with their hit-rate of 26% (p=.51). In the present replication study, it was hypothesized that totally blind individuals have superior psi test performance to sighted individuals. However, the totally blind group and the sighted group both scored at the same below-chance hit-rate of 21% (p=.365; p=.45). There was thus no evidence that psi compensates for total blindness. When the dataset from the present study was combined with Storm and Thalbourne's (2001) dataset (total N=160), the sighted group scored significantly above chance on the sum-of-ranks measure (p=.040). It was argued that if there is compensation for blindness, it might work in ways other than paranormal.

Paranormal effects using sighted and vision-Impaired participants in a quasi-ganzfeld task: A replication study

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A replication study of an earlier study by Storm and Thalbourne (2001; N = 84) was conducted to test the hypothesis that totally blind people compensate for their vision-impairment by developing superior psi ability compared to sighted people. Participants were required to describe a concealed line drawing, and then rank four pictures (1 target plus 3 decoys) from ‘most likely’ (rank #1) to be the target picture in the envelope to ‘least likely’ (rank #4). The concealed picture was removed from its envelope and assigned its corresponding rank number. Previously, Storm and Thalbourne (2001) found an above chance success-rate of 28% (where MCE = 25%) for the totally blind (n = 18), which was superior (not significantly) to the hit-rate of 26% for the rest of the sample (i.e., sighted and partially blind participants combined; n = 66). In the replication study (N = 76), the same procedure was followed, but only totally blind and sighted participants were used. The totally blind group and the sighted group both scored at the same below-chance hit-rate of 21% (p = .45, z = -0.51, p = .695). There was no evidence that psi compensates for blindness. When the dataset from the present study was combined with Storm and Thalbourne’s (2001) dataset (total N = 160), the totally blind group (n = 56) and the sighted group (n = 80) both scored below chance, P = 23% (p = .47, z = -0.38, p = .648), and the sighted/partially-sighted group combined (n = 104) also scored below chance, P = 20% hit-rate (p = .43, z = -1.17, p = .879). Again, psi compensation was not found in the blind group. It was concluded that if there is compensation for blindness, it might work in ways other than paranormal. It is also possible that blind people may prefer targets that are not of a visual nature.
