Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
In this project we theorised that the daily bodily experiences of people with a prior OBE and those without this experience would differ along a number of dimensions. In order to test this theory a questionnaire study was conducted. In study 1, 62 of 243
respondents reported at least one prior OBE. Six scales on different aspects of bodily experience were administered. Respondents reporting a previous OBE were found to score significantly higher on measures of somatoform dissociation (p<.001), self consciousness (p=.035), body dissatisfaction (p=.001), and lower on a measure of confidence in their physical self-presentation (p=.02) than respondents without a previous OBE. The significant findings were confirmed in a second study in which 64 people (34 of whom had had an OBE), where participants also scored significantly higher on measures of Social Physique Anxiety. OBE experients also reported lower levels of body awareness during use of an immersive virtual reality system than nonexperients. The project has also explored variables such as dissociation and absorption in relation to OBEs and the experience of presence within virtual reality. Other data regarding the navigational styles of OBE and non-OBE respondents in an immersive virtual reality task are currently undergoing analysis.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The present study sought to examine various aspects of body image for persons reporting a previous out-of-body experience (OBE). A total of 64 people took part in the study, 34 of whom had had an OBE. Participants reporting a previous OBE were found to score significantly higher on measures of body dissatisfaction, social physique anxiety, and somatoform dissociation, and lower on a measure of physical self-presentation. OBE experients also reported lower levels of body awareness during use of an immersive virtual reality system than nonexperients.

Recent research has indicated that the body experience of people who report a prior out-of-body experience (OBErs) is qualitatively different on a number of body-image variables to that of non-experients (non-OBErs). The present study examined OBErs and non-OBErs Behavioural Embodiment during immersion in a Virtual Reality system. It was hypothesised that OBErs would, compared with non-OBErs, exhibit a disembodied behavioural interaction with the Virtual Environment (VE), characterised by the proportion of time spent navigating the environment from an elevated position and the number of collisions with virtual objects. It was also hypothesised that OBErs would score higher on measures of absorption, dissociation and somatoform dissociation. There were no significant differences between OBErs (n = 16) and non-OBErs (n = 28) on Behavioural Embodiment (i.e., the proportion of time spent navigating the environment from an elevated position and the number of collisions with virtual objects), although there was a positive correlation with number of OBEs and proportion of trial time spent navigating the environment from an elevated position. OBErs were found to score significantly higher than the non-OBErs on measures of absorption, dissociation and somatoform dissociation.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Previous work (inc. project 124/02) has shown that people reporting ‘out-of-body’ experiences (OBEs) score higher on measures of dissociation & body dissatisfaction, lower on a measure of physical self-presentation confidence, and differ in regards to the perceptual experience of their body than non-OBErs. These findings have been interpreted as supporting a dissociational theory of the OBE. However, that research did not distinguish between those who had had a spontaneous OBE, an OBE as part of a near-death experience (NDE), or other OBE forms. That was the focus of this project.
2,029 participants (1,067 M’s & 962 F’s, mean age 36.1, SD=13.4) completed an on-line survey exploring various aspects of bodily experience, such as: somatoform dissociation, physical selfefficacy & body satisfaction. 1,110 reported having an OBE (560 M’s, 550 F’s, mean age 38.6, SD=13.4).
Six types of OBE were observed: Spontaneous (n=355), meditatively induced (n=89), alcohol (n=6) & drug related (n=39), whilst physically threatened (n=32) & as part of an NDE (n=54). 535 (48.6%) OBErs reported having more than 1 of these types of OBE. Broad differences between OBErs & non-OBErs were investigated using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) & Discriminate Function Analysis (DFA) statistics. MANOVA found sig. diff. for all DVs (analysed in two groups): Group 1: F(11, 1925) = 90.98, p<0.001, & Group 2: F(16, 1894) = 66.86, p<0.001.
DFA found one discriminant function which maximally separated the OBErs from non-OBErs: Group 1: chi-square (11) = 807.74, p<0.001. & Group 2: chi-square (16) = 851.22, p<0.001. The best predictors for distinguishing between OBErs & non-OBErs were the Experience, Belief and Ability sub-scales on the Anomalous Experience Inventory.

BACKGROUND
Human sexual response has scarcely been studied from a dyadic approach.
AIM OF THE STUDY
This project aimed to take a dyadic perspective and demonstrate the role of beliefs and body image dimensions as predictors of self-reported and psychophysiological sexual response among heterosexual couples. It sets out specifically: to develop the Beliefs About Sexual Functioning Scale (BASEF) and adapt the Beliefs About Appearance Scale (BAAS) to Portugal; to understand the impact of sexual functioning on sexual satisfaction from a dyadic perspective; to establish the role of cognitive distraction with body appearance as a mediator between both sexual beliefs or beliefs about appearance and sexual response; and to test a dyadic model of the impact of sexual beliefs and body image on psychophysiological sexual outcomes.
METHOD
Using a cross-sectional, correlational design, data was collected from single informants as well as amorous dyads using mixed methodology (self-report and psychophysiological data).
RESULTS
Both BASEF and BAAS proved to be valid, reliable, gender invariant and suitable for the goals of the project. It was established that the impact of sexual functioning on sexual satisfaction is better explained from a dyadic perspective. Furthermore, it was verified that cognitive distraction mediated the impact of sexual beliefs and body appearance beliefs on sexual functioning. None of the body image variables under study proved to be interdependent among couples or adequate for an interdependence explanatory model of sexual response (self-reported or psychophysiological).
CONCLUSIONS
Results support a relational cognitive model of sexual response, but do not demonstrate interdependence of body image variables.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Psychometric study of the Beliefs About Appearance Scale (BAAS) in a Portuguese sample

According to Cognitive Psychology, Beliefs About Appearance are important for a diversity of body image related clinical conditions (e.g., eating disorders, sexual dysfunctions). The current work presents a validation process of the 20 item, four dimension, Beliefs About Appearance Scale (BAAS-Spangle & Stice, 2001) in a community sample. Firstly we conducted a CFA in the total sample (N=378) to test the original structure and the results did not reveal a good fit for the data (x2/gl= 4,827; CFI=,815; TLI= ,793; RMSEA= ,109; SRMR= ,0687). Therefore we divide the sample in two subsamples (1 and 2). Firstly we conducted a AFE with Varimax rotation (n= 197- Sample 1) that revealed a three factor solution (Factor 1 related to attributions and expectations based on appearance- a= ,854; Factor 2 related to emotional impact of own appearance- a= ,806; and Factor 3 related to interpersonal impact of own appearance- a= ,706) retaining 10 items. Secondly with developed a CFA to test this structure with subsample 2 (n= 181). This CFA revealed a good fit for the data (x2/gl= 1,364; CFI=,985; TLI= ,979; RMSEA= ,048; SRMR= ,043). All Factors (F1,F 2 and F3) presented acceptable values of convergent validity with the subscale Global Body Dissatisfaction of the Body Attitudes Test (Probst, Vandereycken, Van Coppenolle, &. Vanderlinden, 1995) and divergent validity with the Sexual Pleasure Scale (Sanchez, Crocker & Boike, 2005). As for its predictive validity F1 predicts a single item on body dissatisfaction (R2=.20); F2 predicts self-reported BMI (R2=.5), F 1 e F2 predict body appearance cognitive distraction during sexual activity (R2=.28) and F3 did not predict any of the variables considered in the current study. We only found Gender differences in F2. The results indicate that a short version of the BAAS has good psychometric properties in a Portuguese community sample.

ABSTRACT:
The present research aimed to demonstrate how the impact of exposure to digitally altered female body forms affects the perception of the desired body size, thus evaluating the variation of the point of subjective normality and the pshysiological responsiveness pattern in a group of
women. The possible impact of the visualization of these images was evaluated through selfreport instruments and the collection of the heart rate during the visualization of an experimental task. The main results point to the existence of a change in the point of subjective normality,
relative to the ideal figure, wich ocurred after the visualization of the experimental task. The responses obtained by the participants approached the leaner body figures after viewing the digitally altered images, wich may indicate that the images of the female bodies carried by the media exert an impact on what is the ideal figure of beauty to be achieved and may be associated with the presence of body dissatisfaction in this target audience.
From a practical point of view, a greater number of investigations in this area can confirm the viability of this paradigma and may even promote the development of observations that can inform health promotion programs and clinical practice.

We present a new instrument for the assessment of responses to threat-related imagery directed towards a human body – the Body-Threat Assessment Battery (BTAB). The BTAB consists of a series of high-definition dynamic clips depicting body-threats and matched non-threat baseline behaviours. For body-threat stimuli a perspective manipulation was included to assess the effects of viewing threats from the point-of-view of the observer (POV) or from an external/exocentric perspective (EXO). Green-screen technology was used so that extraneous background information could be removed and standardised in post-production. Categorical normative data for psychological ratings (valence, arousal and pain), psychophysiological, phasic skin conductance responses (SCRs) and tonic skin conductance levels (SCLs) were obtained for all stimuli. Body-threat stimuli evoked significantly higher psychological ratings of arousal and pain, with more negative ratings of valence, relative to baseline stimuli. In addition, threat stimuli also had an increased efficacy at evoking SCRs, and these were significantly stronger relative to baseline stimuli. There were no effects of perspective on psychophysiological or psychological responses to threat imagery. The findings are discussed in the context of the utility and scope of the BTAB for supporting neurocognitive investigations of aversive imagery and body-threats specifically in the study of embodiment, body-processing and self-consciousness.

Interoception, the sense of the physiological condition of the body originating from within its internal organs, and body image, namely the perception, feelings and attitudes one has about one's body, are two fundamental components of our sense of personal identity and overall well-being. However, the relation between interoception and body image remains poorly understood. We here review recent behavioural and neuroimaging evidence from non-clinical and clinical populations (e.g. eating disorders) to propose that basic interoceptive processes and interoceptive awareness may crucially contribute to the complex formation of body image, as well as to its disturbances. In particular, lower interoceptive accuracy and awareness are associated with body-image concerns. We provide a potential mechanistic explanation of the link between interoception and body image, which aims to integrate interoceptive and exteroceptive representations of the body. The suggested link between interoception and body image can inform new empirically testable hypotheses on the underlying neurocognitive processes that are central to body image concerns and disturbances, and motivate relevant clinical implications.

The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

In his paper “Whatever next? Predictive brains, situated agents, and the future of cognitive science,” Andy Clark seminally proposed that the brain's job is to predict whatever information is coming “next” on the basis of prior inputs and experiences. Perception fundamentally subserves survival and self-preservation in biological agents, such as humans. Survival however crucially depends on rapid and accurate information processing of what is happening in the here and now. Hence, the term “next” in Clark's seminal formulation must include not only the temporal dimension (i.e., what is perceived now) but also the spatial dimension (i.e., what is perceived here or next-to-my-body). In this paper, we propose to focus on perceptual experiences that happen “next,” i.e., close-to-my-body. This is because perceptual processing of proximal sensory inputs has a key impact on the organism's survival. Specifically, we focus on tactile experiences mediated by the skin and what we will call the “extended skin” or “second skin,” that is, immediate objects/materials that envelop closely to our skin, namely, clothes. We propose that the skin and tactile experiences are not a mere border separating the self and world. Rather, they simultaneously and inherently distinguish and connect the bodily self to its environment. Hence, these proximal and pervasive tactile experiences can be viewed as a “transparent bridge” intrinsically relating and facilitating exchanges between the self and the physical and social world. We conclude with potential implications of this observation for the case of Depersonalization Disorder, a condition that makes people feel estranged and detached from their self, body, and the world.
