The present research investigated the psychophysiology of “out of body” and “in the body experiences”. There are four main results of the research:
1. To investigate “out of body” experience, we provided a psychometric decomposition of the structure underlying bodily self-consciousness in the context of the so-called rubber hand illusion, and demonstrated selective links between individual components of self-consciousness and mental body representations (Longo et al., 2008).
2. We found that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the temporo-parietal junction of the right – but not the left – hemisphere reduced the magnitude of interactions between visual and tactile body representations. This suggests that the TPJ is involved in detection of cross-modal conflict, and that this function is lateralised to the right hemisphere.
3. To investigate “in the body experiences”, we developed a simple behavioural method for measuring the implicit representation of the structure of the body, and documented systematic distortions in this structure. We have, furthermore, collected normative data from a large and diverse sample, which can potentially be used to analyse abnormalities of bodily experience.
4. We found that vision of bodies in intrinsic (1st person) and perspectival (3rd person) perspectives had distinct effect on touch. TMS to the EBA, furthermore, had opposite effects on these two perspectives, suggesting that this region is involved in distinguishing bodily reference frames.

What is it like to have a body? The present study takes a psychometric approach to this question. We collected structured introspective reports of the rubber hand illusion, to systematically investigate the structure of bodily self-consciousness. Participants observed a rubber hand that was stroked either synchronously or asynchronously with their own hand and then made proprioceptive judgments of the location of their own hand and used Likert scales to rate their agreement or disagreement with 27 statements relating to their subjective experience of the illusion. Principal components analysis of this data revealed four major components of the experience across conditions, which we interpret as: embodiment of rubber hand, loss of own hand, movement, and affect. In the asynchronous condition, an additional fifth component, deafference, was found. Secondary analysis of the embodiment of runner hand component revealed three subcomponents in both conditions: ownership, location, and agency. The ownership and location components were independent significant predictors of proprioceptive biases induced by the illusion. These results suggest that psychometric tools may provide a rich method for studying the structure of conscious experience, and point the way towards an empirically rigorous phenomenology.

Perceiving the body influences how we perceive and respond to stimuli in the world. We investigated the respective effects of different components of bodily representation—the senses of ownership and agency—on responses to simple visual stimuli. Participants viewed a video image of their hand on a computer monitor presented either in real time, or with a systematic delay. Blocks began with an induction period in which the index finger was (i) brushed, (ii) passively moved, or (iii) actively moved by the participant. Subjective reports showed that the sense of ownership over the seen hand emerged with synchronous video, regardless of the type of induction, whereas the sense of agency over the hand emerged only following synchronous video with active movement. Following induction, participants responded as quickly as possible to the onset of visual stimuli near the hand by pressing a button with their other hand. Reaction time was significantly speeded when participants had a sense of agency over their seen hand. This effect was eliminated when participants responded vocally, suggesting that it reflects priming of manual responses, rather than enhanced stimulus detection. These results suggest that vision of one’s own hand—and, specifically, the sense of agency over that hand—primes manual motor responses.

Bodily illusions differently affect body representations underlying perception and action. We investigated whether this task dependence reflects two distinct dimensions of embodiment: the sense of agency and the sense of the body as a coherent whole. In experiment 1 the sense of agency was manipulated by comparing active versus passive movements during the induction phase in a video rubber hand illusion (vRHI) setup. After induction, proprioceptive biases were measured both by perceptual judgments of hand position, as well as by measuring end-point accuracy of subjects' active pointing movements to an external object with the affected hand. The results showed, first, that the vRHI is largely perceptual: passive perceptual localisation judgments were altered, but end-point accuracy of active pointing responses with the affected hand to an external object was unaffected. Second, within the perceptual judgments, there was a novel congruence effect, such that perceptual biases were larger following passive induction of vRHI than following active induction. There was a trend for the converse effect for pointing responses, with larger pointing bias following active induction. In experiment 2, we used the traditional RHI to investigate the coherence of body representation by synchronous stimulation of either matching or mismatching fingers on the rubber hand and the participant's own hand. Stimulation of matching fingers induced a local proprioceptive bias for only the stimulated finger, but did not affect the perceived shape of the hand as a whole. In contrast, stimulation of spatially mismatching fingers eliminated the RHI entirely. The present results show that (i) the sense of agency during illusion induction has specific effects, depending on whether we represent our body for perception or to guide action, and (ii) representations of specific body parts can be altered without affecting perception of the spatial configuration of the body as a whole.

Vestibular signals are integrated with signals from other sensory modalities. This convergence could reflect an important mechanism for maintaining the perception of the body. Here we review the current literature in order to develop a framework for understanding how the vestibular system contributes to body representation. According to recent models, we distinguish between three processes for body representation, and we look at whether vestibular signals might influence each process. These are (i) somatosensation, the primary sensory processing of somatic stimuli, (ii) somatoperception, the processes of constructing percepts and experiences of somatic objects and events and (iii) somatorepresentation, the knowledge about the body as a physical object in the world. Vestibular signals appear to contribute to all three levels in this model of body processing. Thus, the traditional view of the vestibular system as a low-level, dedicated orienting module tends to underestimate the pervasive role of vestibular input in bodily self-awareness.

The feeling of owning and controlling the body relies on the integration and interpretation of sensory input from multiple sources with respect to existing representations of the bodily self. Illusion paradigms involving multisensory manipulations have demonstrated that while the senses of ownership and agency are strongly related, these two components of bodily experience may be dissociable and differentially affected by alterations to sensory input. Importantly, however, much of the current literature has focused on the application of sensory manipulations to external objects or virtual representations of the self that are visually incongruent with the viewer's own body and which are not part of the existing body representation. The current experiment used MIRAGE-mediated reality to investigate how manipulating the visual, spatial and temporal properties of the participant's own hand (as opposed to a fake/virtual limb) affected embodiment and action. Participants viewed two representations of their right hand inside a MIRAGE multisensory illusions box with opposing visual (normal or grossly distorted), temporal (synchronous or asynchronous) and spatial (precise real location or false location) manipulations applied to each hand. Subjective experiences of ownership and agency towards each hand were measured alongside an objective measure of perceived hand location using a pointing task. The subjective sense of agency was always anchored to the synchronous hand, regardless of physical appearance and location. Subjective ownership also moved with the synchronous hand, except when both the location and appearance of the synchronous limb were incongruent with that of the real limb. Objective pointing measures displayed a similar pattern, however movement synchrony was not sufficient to drive a complete shift in perceived hand location, indicating a greater reliance on the spatial location of the real hand. The results suggest that while the congruence of self-generated movement is a sufficient driver for the sense of agency, the sense of ownership is additionally sensitive to cues about the visual appearance and spatial location of one's own body.

The dual nature of touch has long been understood. The sense of touch seems to carry information at the same time about the external object touching our skin, and also about our body itself. However, how these two interact has remained obscure. We present an analytic model of how tactile information interacts with mental body representations in the brain. Four such interactions are described: the link between the body surface and the maps in primary somatosensory cortex, the contribution of somatosensory cortical information to mental body representations, the feedback pathway from such higher representations back to primary tactile processing in somatosensory cortex, and the modulation of tactile object perception by mental body representations.

ABSTRACT:
Background
Autosuggestion, a form of self-suggestion, follows the idea that the inner repetition of a thought can influence perception. Although widely integrated into modern life, the empirical evidence on whether autosuggestion can alter one’s own perception is scarce.
Aims
This research investigates the modulatory effects of autosuggestion on perception, emotion and body representation, across six studies, using psychophysics and electrophysiological recordings.
Method
In Study 1, we designed an implicit experimental measure to assess the effects of reiterating the thought that a touch felt strong or weak, while minimizing response biases. Studies 2 and 3 examined the effects of autosuggestion and placebo. Studies 4 and 5 focused on the generalization of the autosuggestive phenomena to tactile localization and emotion attribution. Finally, Study 6 focused on the impact of haptic experiences with extreme body types on subsequent body perception.
Results
Study 1 revealed significant modulation of tactile perception through autosuggestion. However, Study 2 did not yield similar effects, highlighting potential limitations and challenges in the experimental design. Study 3 showed similar electrophysiological responses in placebo and autosuggestion. Study 4 did not yield statistically significant differences. Study 5's findings showed that autosuggestion exerts an influence on emotion attribution of facial expression. Finally, Study 6, revealed adiposity aftereffects in the haptic modality.
Conclusions
This investigation contributes valuable insights into the potential factors influencing the efficacy of autosuggestion. The findings encourage further exploration of these phenomena and opens avenues for developing targeted interventions in patient care and rehabilitation.

In the study of bodily awareness, the predictive coding theory has revealed that our brain continuously modulates sensory experiences to integrate them into a unitary body representation. Indeed, during multisensory illusions (e.g., the rubber hand illusion, RHI), the synchronous stroking of the participant ' s concealed hand and a fake visible one creates a visuotactile con fl ict, generating a prediction error. Within the predictive coding framework, through sensory processing modulation, prediction errors are solved, inducing participants to feel as if touches originated from the fake hand, thus ascribing the fake hand to their own body. Here, we aimed to address sensory processing modulation under multisensory con fl ict, by disentangling somatosensory and visual stimuli processing that are intrinsically associated during the illusion induction. To this aim, we designed two EEG experiments, in which somatosensory- (SEPs; Experiment 1; N = 18; F = 10) and visual -evoked potentials (VEPs; Experiment 2; N = 18; F = 9) were recorded in human males and females following the RHI. Our results show that, in both experiments, ERP amplitude is signi fi cantly modulated in the illusion as compared with both control and baseline conditions, with a modality -dependent diametrical pattern showing decreased SEP amplitude and increased VEP amplitude. Importantly, both somatosensory and visual modulations occur in long -latency time windows previously associated with tactile and visual awareness, thus explaining the illusion of perceiving touch at the sight location. In conclusion, we describe a diametrical modulation of somatosensory and visual processing as the neural mechanism that allows maintaining a stable body representation, by restoring visuotactile congruency under the occurrence of multisensory con fl icts. Signi fi cance Statement Given the inherent relationship between touch and body, the literature on body representation has mainly focused on the somatosensory system ' s investigation, whereas less attention has been paid to the visual system. Here, we aim to investigate the modulation of both somatosensory and visual processing during a well-known multisensory illusion (i.e., the rubber hand illusion, RHI), in which visuotactile con fl ict is employed to challenge body representation. By recording electroencephalography, we show how the processing of somatosensory and visual stimuli is diametrically modulated during the RHI, with a decrease of the former and an increase of the latter. We conclude that this neural mechanism is triggered to restore visuotactile congruency, leading to the illusory feeling of perceiving touch at the sight location.

The human body is perhaps the most ubiquitous and salient visual stimulus that we encounter in our daily lives. Given the prevalence of images of human bodies in natural scene statistics, it is no surprise that our mental representations of the body are thought to strongly originate from visual experience. Yet, little is still known about high-level cognitive representations of the body. Here, we retrieved a body map from natural language, taking this as a window into high-level cognitive processes. We first extracted a matrix of distances between body parts from natural language data and employed this matrix to extrapolate a body map. To test the effectiveness of this high-level body map, we then conducted a series of experiments in which participants were asked to classify the distance between pairs of body parts, presented either as words or images. We found that the high-level body map was systematically activated when participants were making these distance judgments. Crucially, the linguistic map explained participants’ performance over and above the visual body map, indicating that the former cannot be simply conceived as a by-product of perceptual experience. These findings, therefore, establish the existence of a behaviorally relevant, high-level representation of the human body.
