Differences in body image between people reporting near-death and spontaneous out-of-body-experiences
Publication year: 2006
URL:
http://www.spr.ac.uk/psedsite/JSPRabstracts.php3?year=2006#apr
Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Many people report having had an ‘out-of-body’ experience (OBE) in which they felt as if their phenomenal self was separated from their physical body. Previous work has found OBE experients (OBErs) to score higher on measures of dissociation (e.g. Richards, 1991) and to differ from non-experients (non-OBErs) with regard to the perceptual experience of their body (Irwin, 2000). These findings have been interpreted as supporting a dissociational theory of the OBE. More recent work has suggested that an examination of other dimensions of body experience might reveal further aspects of such dissociational experience (Murray & Fox, 2005a, 2005b). In this work, OBErs have been found to score higher on a measure of body dissatisfaction, and lower on a measure of confidence in their physical self-presentation than non-OBErs. However, this prior research did not distinguish between those who had had a spontaneous OBE or an OBE as part of a near-death experience (NDE). The circumstances surrounding the spontaneous OBE and the NDE which includes an OBE appear to be very different; the former usually takes place when the person is on the verge of being awake or asleep, while the latter usually occurs when the person is placed in very stressful and fearful circumstances in which they perceive themselves to be near to death, are by some objective criteria near to death, or both. Given the very different contexts in which these forms of OBE occur, in the present study it was hypothesised that the causes of the spontaneous OBE and the OBE which takes place as part of an NDE have different causal psychological mechanisms. If this was supported by research findings, this would suggest at least two pathways to the OBE and the need for research which distinguishes between these. It was predicted that people reporting a prior spontaneous OBE would score more negatively on a variety of dimensions of body-related experience than people reporting an OBE as part as an NDE. Not all of the hypotheses were supported, but spontaneous OBErs were found to score significantly higher on measures of somatoform dissociation, body dissatisfaction and self-consciousness. The findings reported here support the theory that there are pre-existing differences in the body experience of NDErs and spontaneous OBErs.

However, this prior research did not distinguish between those who had had a spontaneous OBE or an OBE as part of a near-death experience (NDE).
In a preliminary study we recruited participants via email advertisements to on-line discussion groups dedicated to topics of either near-death experiences or out-of-body experiences. A total of 39 participants who reported either a spontaneous OBE (n=28) or OBE as part of a near-death experience took part (we also received a small number of responses from people who had an OBE when under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but given the small number these were not included in the analysis). It was hypothesised that the causes of the spontaneous OBE and the OBE which takes place as part of an NDE have different causal psychological mechanisms. It was predicted that people reporting a prior spontaneous OBE would score more negatively on a variety of dimensions of body image, such as body dissatisfaction, than people reporting an OBE as part as a Near-death experience. Not all of the hypotheses were supported, but spontaneous OBErs (n=28) were found to score significantly higher on measures of body dissatisfaction and self-consciousness than NDErs (n=11).
In our main project study we have gathered nearly 2000 completed web questionnaires to examine further differences between OBErs and non-OBErs. This includes a comparison of OBEs experienced spontaneously, as part of and NDE, and as part of a meditatively, drug or alcohol induced experience. Analysis of this data is underway and will be reported when available.

O papel da regulação emocional e do estilo de vinculação na satisfação corporal de desportistas
Publication year: 2018

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Body dissatisfaction has marked implications in an individual’s life and has been associated with the development of feeding and eating disorders. The literature points to the existence of associations between body satisfaction, emotion regulation, and the practice of physical activity, particularly the practice of sports that do not focus on body aesthetics. Thus, with this study, we intend to relate body satisfaction with the ability to regulate emotions, comparing athletes with non-athletes, and to explore associations between attachment styles, the ability to regulate emotions, and body satisfaction.
In this study, self-report measures were used to evaluate self-perception regarding body satisfaction, repertoire of emotion regulation, and attachment styles. Additionally, psychophysiological data was collected, during an experimental protocol, to more objectively explore the ability to regulate emotions.
The results of the present study suggest that a greater ability to regulate emotions (measured using psychophysiological data) and secure attachment styles are associated with greater body satisfaction.
This study brings further evidence for the relevance of teaching adaptive emotion regulation strategies as a way to prevent the incidence of eating disorders and weight-related attitudes, namely, body dissatisfaction.

O impacto da exposição às redes sociais durante o confinamento da COVID-19 na satisfação corporal
Publication year: 2021
URL:
https://www.porto.ucp.pt/pt/node/27135
Abstract/Results: This work approaches the impact of the media and its potential negative influence on the body satisfaction of young women comparing Portuguese and English women. And given the unexpected emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact that the sudden massive use of digital media, accompanied by confinement and the need for physical distance, had repercussions in this domain was evaluated. This issue becomes even more important due to its relationship with Eating and Ingestion Disorders. So, 296 women (174 Portuguese and 122 British) between 18 and 35 years old participated in this study. They answered about body satisfaction and the pattern of use of social networks,
in two moments (before and after the beginning of the pandemic) through a questionnaire online. The results show that English women use social networks more and more frequently than Portuguese women; however, Portuguese women are more concerned about their appearance and the time they are exposed to the screens. Regarding the concern with the current appearance compared to the beginning of the pandemic, both groups reported more current concern, however the Portuguese women present higher levels of concern. Another relevant factor was realizing that after the start of the pandemic, the parts of the body that most concerned the participants were the face and hair, perhaps as a reflection of the constant exposure to social networks. Finally, there was a positive correction between the existence of concern with their own appearance and the indexes associated with depression among Portuguese women. This study presents evidence that physical isolation, and in some cases also social isolation, and the new format of social interaction via social networks and video calls had negative repercussions on many young women and exacerbated concerns in both cultures studied in this dissertation, more particularly between the Portuguese.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The present research aims to assess the impact of media exposure to standardized beauty ideals and how this affects body satisfaction and emotion regulation, considering four racial-ethnic categories in a group of young women in Portugal. To answer the research question and
investigate this impact, it was used self-report instruments compiled in a virtual questionnaire administered to 124 women between 18 and 39 years old. The main results point to a high level of media exposure and high body satisfaction, regardless of racial-ethnic category. Regarding
emotion regulation ability, the results show a frequency of emotional suppression as a prioritized strategy of emotion regulation. From a practical point of view, this exploratory study was conducted to fill the lack of studies in this area in Portugal and presents as future recommendations to prioritize increased research to implement strategies to mitigate the deleterious impact that the dissemination of beauty ideals may have on individuals of various racial-ethnic origins. This line of research seeks to raise awareness about the importance of literacy related to the risks and potentialities of media and its impact on body satisfaction in young women

O impacto da exposição às redes sociais durante o confinamento da COVID-19 na satisfação corporal
Publication year: 2021

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This work approaches the impact of the media and its potential negative influence on the body satisfaction of young women comparing Portuguese and English women. They answered about body satisfaction and the pattern of use of social networks, in two moments (before and after the beginning of the pandemic) through a questionnaire online. The results show that English women use social networks more and more frequently than Portuguese women; however, Portuguese women are more concerned about their appearance and the time they are exposed to the screens. Regarding the concern with the current appearance compared to the beginning of the pandemic, both
groups reported more current concern, however the Portuguese women present higher levels of concern.

Final report - Physiological indices of the deleterious effects of unrealistic media images on body satisfaction: A cross-cultural investigation
Publication year: 2023
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Background
Digital modification aiming to modify the appearance of images represents a common practice in the traditional mass media industry (fashion magazines, television, movies) to make models appear thinner and more attractive. The widespread dissemination of images that thus promote unrealistic and unattainable standards of beauty has become a public health concern due to their impact in the health of youth.
Aims
The aims of this study were (1) To explore the relationship between emotion dysregulation and body image; (2) To analyze the relationship between self-report and psychophysiological measures; (3) To evaluate the impact of two strategies aiming to decrease the deleterious effects of media on body image; and (4) To evaluate the impact of race in on exposure to media and body perception.
Method
This project employed a mixed-methods approach to investigate the objectives outlined above. Firstly, a quantitative survey was administered to collect self-report data on emotion dysregulation, body image, social cognition, and media exposure. Young women' responses were analyzed using statistical techniques to identify relationships and patterns. Psychophysiological measures, including heart rate, respiratory frequency and skin conductance, were recorded during a laboratory session to assess participants' physiological responses to emotional stimuli and media exposure. A task was designed to assess women's emotional response and acceptance of two specific strategies aimed at mitigating the negative impact of the thin-ideal portrayed in social media. These objective measures were synchronized with self-report data to provide a deep understanding of participants' emotional experiences and their relationship with social cognition and body image. This mixed-methods approach allowed for a holistic examination of the research questions, incorporating both objective physiological data and subjective self-report measures.
Results
In general, the different results from the studies conducted under the CAPSULE project showed a significant association between emotion regulation and body image, demonstrating that effective emotion regulation skills (as measured by the peripheral neurophysiological measures), have been associated with higher levels of body satisfaction. Conversely, difficulties or poor emotion regulation skills, such as engaging in maladaptive coping strategies, negative rumination, or higher levels of physiological stress have been linked to lower levels of body satisfaction in the three countries. This, in turn, can perpetuate a cycle where negative emotions contribute to body dissatisfaction, and body dissatisfaction contributes to difficulties in emotion regulation.
Conclusions
It is anticipated that these skills and the emotion regulation strategies enable individuals, specifically young women, to manage negative emotions related to body image concerns, fostering a more positive perception of their bodies. Significant findings demonstrating this result pattern were observed in two of the countries included in the data collection process: the United Kingdom and Portugal. However, it is important to note that similar significant results were not observed in the American sample.
