Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
While infant attachment has been largely studied, parental attachment is still relatively unknown, especially when referred to fathers. However, it is mainly recognised that parents’ emotional involvement with the newborn contributes to the quality of the interaction and the care they provide. The aim of this study was to study mother-to-infant and father-to-infant initial emotional involvement; namely, differences between mothers and fathers and changes in mother’s emotions toward the neonate within the first days after delivery. The Bonding Scale, an extended Portuguese version of the ‘New Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale’, was administered during the first two days after childbirth to a sample of 315 mothers and 141 fathers (n = 456), at the Júlio Dinis Maternity Hospital (Portugal). Most mothers and fathers show positive emotions and only a few of them showed negative emotions toward the infant. Maternal and paternal emotional involvement toward the newborn tend to be similar; nevertheless, fathers show less fear and better emotional involvement with the neonate, while mothers are sadder and show more emotions not related to bonding. During the first days following delivery, emotions not related to bonding, such as fear, seem to decrease in mothers.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Objectives - To study mother-to-infant emotional involvement at birth, namely factors (socio-demographics, previous life events, type of delivery, pain at childbirth, support from partner, infant characteristics, early experiences with the newborn, and mother's mood) that interfere with the mother's positive, negative and not clear emotions toward the newborn.
Methods - The Bonding Scale (an extended Portuguese version of the 'New Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale') and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale were administrated during the first after delivery days to 315 mothers recruited at Júlio Dinis Maternity Hospital (MJD, Porto, Portugal).
Results - A worse emotional involvement with the newborn was observed when the mother was unemployed, unmarried, had less than grade 9, previous obstetrical/psychological problems or was depressed, as well as when the infant was female, had neonatal problems or was admitted in the intensive care unit. Lower total bonding results were significantly predicted when the mother was depressed and had a lower educational level; being depressed, unemployed and single predicted more negative emotions toward the infant as well. No significant differences in the mother-to-infant emotional involvement were obtained for events related to childbirth, such as type of delivery, pain and partner support, or early experiences with the newborn; these events do not predict mother's bonding results either.
Conclusion - The study results support the need for screening and supporting depressed, unemployed and single mothers, in order to prevent bonding difficulties with the newborn at birth.

Recently implemented social and technological changes have several implications
for the parental behavior toward the baby, but its repercussions on the parental emotional
involvement and care still need to be investigated. Maternal attachment toward the infant, a
unique emotional long-term relationship, gradually established from the mother’s first contact
with the baby, is a process of mutual adaptation in which the mother and the baby actively
participate, as the present article clarify. This theoretical study is essentially aimed to the fundamental
question of “what may stimulate or promote the parental attachment with the baby?”.
It intents to implement our knowledge about the dimensions involved on the initial parental
attachment with the baby, particularly to light out the importance of the hormonal factors, as
the contribution of these have not be sufficiently tacked in account on the maternal attachment
process. More factors are also considered, such as: the type of delivery, the delivery pain and
the methods used to reduce it, the mother-infant separation at birth, and the newborn’s interactive
competency and availability.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Although child attachment toward the parents has been largely studied, we still have a lot to know about how parents attach to infants. Nevertheless, the literature has been highlighting for so long that the parents’ emotional involvement is a determinant factor in the quality of the interaction and the care that they provided to the child. This study investigates the parents’ initial emotional bonding toward the newborn, attending to 3 main objectives: (1) to describe parents’ emotional involvement with the infant in the first postpartum week, (2) to analyse differences in the initial emotional bonding, between mothers and fathers; 3) to evaluate changes in the mother’s emotional involvement with the infant during the first postpartum week. The Bonding Scale (Figueiredo, Marques, Costa, Pacheco, & Pais, 2004) was administrated to 150 mothers, 24 hours after the delivery, and to 315 mothers and 141 fathers (N=456), at 1 to 2 days postpartum (at the Júlio Dinis Maternity Hospital. Porto). The results show that in the week following the delivery, most mothers and fathers report: (1) high positive emotional involvement (71% and 73%, respectively); (2) at least one emotion not clearly related with bonding (76% and 70.9%, respectively); (3) no negative emotions toward the infant (although some negative emotional involvement is present in 21% of the mothers and 16.3% of the fathers). Results also show that 48 hours after delivery mother’s and father’s emotional involvement toward the newborn is not so different, but mothers feel significantly more sad, possessive and fearful, and in general have more emotions not clearly related with bonding as well as worse bonding than fathers. The results also show that mothers are significantly less fearful in the presence of the infant at day 2 than at day 1, and emotions not clearly related with bonding tend to decrease in the first following delivery days. We conclude that in the first week after childbirth, (1) most mothers and fathers have high positive involvement, at least one emotion not clearly related with bonding, low or absent negative emotional involvement with the infant. (2) Fathers have a better initial bonding with the newborn than mothers. (3) In a very short period of time (1 day) slightly positive changes in the quality of the mother’s emotions toward the child can be observed. We also conclude that studying the parents’ emotional involvement with the baby and considering the conditions that might benefit the mother’s and father’s emotional involvement, in the moments that follow childbirth, are very important issues.

Massaging premature infants: Effects on mothers and fathers

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Our aim was to study the impact of a massage protocol on the symptomatology and involvement of mothers and fathers with their preterm offspring admitted in the NICU. The specific goal was to study how the massage interfered in this relationship, as well as with other type of symptomatology, such as depression, anxiety.
We decided to study this subject because in 2005 6,55% (7174) were born with less than 37 weeks and 0,88% (966) with less than 31 weeks; 7,5% (8209) weighed less than 2500g and 0,9% (1012) less than 1550g (INE, 2008), all of which are admitted to the NICU.
PARTICIPANTS:
20 mothers and 20 fathers that had a preterm baby with less than 34 weeks and/or 1500g admitted to Júlio Dinis Maternity, Oporto Hospital Centre between July 2007 and December 2008.
INSTRUMENTS:
-EPDS - Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale
-STAI - Stait Trait Anxiety Inventory
-Bonding
PROCEDURE:
We assessed them in two stages: in the NICU they were asked for informed consent and given various questionnaires to answer – EPDS, STAI, and Bonding.
A month later they were assessed again, using the same instruments from stage one.
RESULTS:
Taking this into consideration that our sample is not yet complete, the gender difference between subjects is not significant [F(3,9)=1,34;p=0,31] and either is the temporal variation between both moments [F(3,9)=1,65;p=0,23]. The interaction between times and gender was also not significant [F(3,9)=1,56;p=0,25], which shows that both men and women behave similarly.
Between the first and second moment there were no significant differences in the STAI [F(1)=1,17;p=0,30], the EPDS [F(1)=3,14;p=0,10], the Bonding [F(1)=2,27;p=0,15] and the RQ [F(1)=3,24;p=0,09]. This also applies to the differences between gender, where STAI [F(1)=1,68;p=0,22], EPDS [F(1)=2,62;p=0,13], Bonding [F(1)=3,10;p=0,10] and RQ [F(1)=1,92;p=0,19] not significant.
CONCLUSION:
Our general our hypothesis was confirmed – over time the depressive and anxious symptoms decrease, although not significantly for now.
The BONDING shows interesting results, while in the women it decreases over time, in the men it increases. This can be explained because of the time the baby in admitted in the NICU.

Term and pre-term parents - Why are they different?

Our aim was to study the differences between preterm and term parents, considering their symptomatology, such as anxiety and depression, as well as their relationship with their newborn and their spouse.
SAMPLE:
60 mothers of pre-term babies were recruited at the Neonatal Care Unit in a Maternity Hospital in Oporto, Portugal. Later, these mothers were paired with mothers of 60 term babies, recruited in the same hospital after delivery, considering their level of education and their baby’s sex as pairing variables. The fathers were also included in the study (n=107).
INSTRUMENTS:

PROCEDURE:
Both groups were assessed when the baby was clinically stable and able their parents able to participate and answer the questionnaires included in this study. The sample was recruited during July 2007 and July 2008.
RESULTS:
Our purpose was to assess the differences between the pre-term and term group regarding STAI, EPDS and RQ sub-scales. There are significant differences in the STAI [F(3,985) = 37,15 and 34,24, p = .047] and the negative sub-scale of the RQ [F(4,054) = 1,96 and 2,03, p = .045].
We can also observe that there are statistical differences in the STAI [F(9,537) = 37,70 and 33,44, p = .002] and EPDS [F(17,133] = 6,79 and 4,42, p = .000] when mothers and fathers are compared. However, this does happen with the RQ in the positive [F(0,663) = 3,62 and 2,05, p = .42] and negative sub-scale [F(0,300] = 2,01 and 2,05, p = .58]
The second aim was to see if there were differences between the mothers in the pre-term and the term group as well as the fathers. Comparing the mothers, there are significant differences in the STAI [F(5,856] = 40,08 and 35,19, p = 0,017] and EPDS [F(3,789) = 5,96 and 7,58, p = 0,054). There were on the other hand no significant differences regarding the positive [F(0,205) = 3,64 and 3,60, p = .651] and negative [F(1,751) = 1,95 ad 2,08, p = .188] sub-scale of the RQ.
However, there were no statistically significant differences in any of the father’s variables, showing that they behave alike whether they are in the pre-term or term group.
