The analysis of synchronization, particularly phase locking, is being increasingly used in neuroscience to explore coordinated brain activity. The application of this methodology to magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings would seem promising because these two recording techniques have great temporal resolution. However, current methods of synchronization analysis applied to raw MEG/EEG data may not be as physiologically sound as previously thought. In this work we present a model of brain activity based on random current dipoles that reproduces the main characteristics observed in measurements of real data synchronization, even when no synchronized activity is taking place among the sources. In particular, we show that the enhanced local synchronization, previously described in some studies of epileptic seizures, may result from the activity of only a few unsynchronized sources.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Impulse control - withholding short term actions to achieve longer term goals - is an important facet of goal-directed behavior. Frontal cortex has been hypothesized to exert top-down inhibition of impulsive actions, but little is known about the nature of the neural signals responsible for such control. To address these questions, we have developed a novel impulse control task in rats and begun to investigate the causal involvement and neural correlates of frontal cortical areas.
In the impulse control task, subjects interact with a waiting port and a reward port. While waiting, two tones are generated, the first at a fixed short delay (0.4 s) and the second at a longer random delay (exponentially-distributed, min. 0.7 s). Responses after the first tone garner a reward, but the amount is 3-4 times larger after the second tone. A minimum trial onset interval was set so that waiting time did not affect trial rate. Thus, to maximize reward, subjects must withhold responding to the first tone and respond to the second.
This task produces three trial types: “failure” to wait for the first tone, “impatient” responses after the first tone and “patient” responses after the second tone. The delay of the second tone was titrated to achieve 30% patient responses (approx. 2 s mean). The timing of impatient responses varied randomly from trial to trial, approximating the distribution of second tone delays.
First, to test for areas that may be causally involved in impulse control, we infused muscimol locally to inactivate medial and dorsomedial frontal cortex (mPFC and M2). Inactivation of regions within these areas indeed led to a decrease in the waiting time and a decrease in the patient trials.
Second, to characterize neural signals related to impulse control, we made single-unit recordings from mPFC and M2 neurons, testing for signals that correlated on a trial-by-trial basis with waiting time on impatient trials. Approximately 12% of neurons in dorsomedial frontal cortex (28/238 neurons) showed activity that correlated with and predicted waiting time. We observed nearly equal proportions of positive and negative correlations.
Waiting-predictive neurons showed a variety of time courses of activity. The most frequent one was a phasic signal locked to waiting-port entry, but other neurons showed ramping activity peaking at waiting-port exit. Waiting correlated activity sometimes even occurred a few seconds before waiting port entry.
These results establish a task suitable for studying impulse control, suggest the involvement of dorsomedial frontal cortex in this function, and reveal properties of single neural activity that may be responsible for top-down control of impulsive action.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We have examined the specificity of face and emotion recognition networks in relation to other object recognition modules in normal subjects and disease models of impaired perception/limbic processing, using Event-Related Potential and fMRI measures and techniques to study causality in face processing networks. Response invariance properties of face processing networks, in particular 3D abstract control objects and faces were also tested. Perceptual correlates of holistic object processing in normal subjects and neurodevelopmental conditions were also studied using “Mooney” abstract faces and hierarchical stimuli. We have proven that the basal ganglia structures are crucial for emotional processing of central vs. peripheral faces irrespective of oculomotor processing demands. We were also able to separate automatic from conscious aspects of emotional processing of faces, and have shown that the human amygdala has an important foveal bias for face processing of threat content. We have also used a novel paradigm that allowed for an explicit separation of the neural correlates of the sensory, perceptual and motor components in holistic face perceptual decision. This strategy was anchored on a well-defined neurochronometry of cognitive processes and helped elucidate the contribution of different regions in the visual stream and insular networks in perceptual decision-making and social cognition. We have also found Gamma band neural activity is related to perceptual “Eureka” effects when observing ambiguous dynamic faces. In sum our work elucidated the dynamics of low and high level affective face processing along the visual ventral stream, the amygdala and basal ganglia.

To test this in independent groups of healthy persons.
AIMS:
Which brain regions are activated / inhibited during mental arithmetic compared to task-free resting?
METHODS:
We examined four independent groups of healthy adults (N = 15, 14, 14, 23, respectively) during simple arithmetic (continuous subtraction of 7) and task-free resting before and after arithmetic, all with closed eyes. Multichannel head surface EEG (19–58 channels) was continually recorded, then recomputed (using sLORETA functional tomography) into current density for 6239 cortical voxels, for each of the eight EEG frequency bands (delta through gamma, 1.5–44 Hz). Pre- and post-arithmetic resting was averaged. Using paired t-tests, frequency band-wise normalized and log-transformed current density was compared between arithmetic and resting for each group. The resulting p-values were combined across groups using Fisher’s combination procedure. For each frequency band, sLORETA voxels differing between conditions at Fisher’s (across groups) p < 0.05 were computed into centers of gravity separately for increased and decreased activation.
RESULTS:
Activity that was stronger during arithmetic compared to resting had gravity centers in midline anterior regions for slow frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha-1) and in right posterior regions for fast frequency bands (alpha-2 through gamma). Activity that was weaker during arithmetic compared to resting was centered around left parietal areas for all eight frequency bands.
CONCLUSIONS
The results suggest that arithmetic compared to resting involves frontal inhibition coupled with increased right parietal activation, and left parietal reduced facilitatory and reduced inhibitory activity.

What happens during mental calculation in the brain? We investigated this question in four independent groups of healthy adults (N=15, 14, 14, 23) using low resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA).
METHODS:
For each group, EEG (19-58 channels) was recorded during a simple mental calculation task (quiet continuous subtraction of 7 from 400) and during pre- and post-task resting. For each condition and each of eight EEG frequency bands (delta through gamma), sLORETA current density was computed (6239 cortical voxels). Pre- and post-task resting values were averaged and all current densities were log-transformed and normalized for each EEG frequency band. Paired t-tests revealed significant differences between conditions at p<0.05 corrected for multiple testing. For each EEG frequency band, these were combined across groups using Fisher’s combination procedure. From the significant voxels, centers of gravity for increased and decreased activation were computed.
RESULTS:
Centers of gravity revealed that low frequency activity (delta through alpha-1) that was stronger during arithmetic compared to resting centered in midline anterior regions, high frequency activity (alpha-2 through gamma) in right posterior regions. Activity that was weaker during arithmetic compared to resting centered in left posterior areas for all frequency bands.
DISCUSSION:
The results suggest that the execution of a simple calculation task demands an inhibition of anterior regions (known to be associated with higher cognitive processing) and facilitation of right posterior regions, and an interplay of decreased inhibition and decreased facilitation in left posterior regions.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The presentation of pictures evokes clearly detectable responses in the electro­encephalogram (EEG). Here, the question is addressed whether people show an anomalous pre-stimulus response prior to a sudden appearance of pictures. Therefore, twenty participants were exposed at randomised times to affective and non-affective pictures, and to checkerboard stimuli. In a non-parametric statistical analysis the one-second pre-stimulus epochs were compared with arbitrarily chosen non-exposed pre-stimulus epochs. In a second step, the contrasts between the pre-stimulus responses of different conditions were tested for significance. Checkerboard stimulation revealed no effect, whereas the picture stimuli resulted in a significant increase of the EEG activity. For affective pictures as well as for the difference between affective and neutral pictures, significant z-scores greater than z = 2.0 were found. A control condition with a covered monitor did not show such an effect. The delta band power was only decreased before presentation of pictures.
The results support the possible existence of an abnormal presentiment effect. As it is not visible in the averaged EEG curves, this effect may not be time-locked to the stimulus and may be different for each participant. The non-significant results for neutral pictures and checkerboard stimuli suggest that emotional affectivity is important for a pre-stimulus effect in the EEG.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Predicting a particular cognitive state from a specific pattern of fMRI voxel values is still a methodological challenge. Decoding brain activity is usually performed in highly controlled experimental paradigms characterized by a series of distinct states induced by a temporally constrained experimental design. In more realistic conditions, the number, sequence and duration of mental states are unpredictably generated by the individual, resulting in complex and imbalanced fMRI data sets. This study tests the classification of brain activity, acquired on 16 volunteers using fMRI, during mental imagery, a condition in which the number and duration of mental events were not externally imposed but self-generated. To deal with these issues, two classification techniques were considered (Support Vector Machines, SVM, and Gaussian Processes, GP), as well as different feature extraction methods (General Linear Model, GLM and SVM). These techniques were combined in order to identify the procedures leading to the highest accuracy measures. Our results showed that 12 data sets out of 16 could be significantly modeled by either SVM or GP. Model accuracies tended to be related to the degree of imbalance between classes and to task performance of the volunteers. We also conclude that the GP technique tends to be more robust than SVM to model unbalanced data sets.

Abstract/Results: Humans make eye-contact to extract information about other people’s mental states, recruiting dedicated brain networks that process information about the self and others. Recent studies show that eye-contact increases the synchronization between two brains but do not consider its effects on activity within single brains. Here we investigate how eye-contact affects the frequency and direction of the synchronization within and between two brains and the corresponding network characteristics. We also evaluate the functional relevance of eye-contact networks by comparing inter- and intra-brain networks of friends vs. strangers and the direction of synchronization between leaders and followers. We show that eye-contact increases higher inter- and intra-brain synchronization in the gamma frequency band. Network analysis reveals that some brain areas serve as hubs linking within- and between-brain networks. During eye-contact, friends show higher inter-brain synchronization than strangers. Dyads with clear leader/follower roles demonstrate higher synchronization from leader to follower in the alpha frequency band. Importantly, eye-contact affects synchronization between brains more than within brains, demonstrating that eye-contact is an inherently social signal. Future work should elucidate the causal mechanisms behind eye-contact induced synchronization.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The general aim of this project is to characterize the relationship between spontaneous eye movement patterns and spontaneous brain activity. This is rooted on two main hypotheses: 1) apparently complex and variable behaviours are in part driven by low dimensional intrinsic dynamics; 2) these intrinsic behavioural dynamics match intrinsic neural data (i.e., resting-state). In the first chapter, we review the hypothesis of low dimensionality in behaviour. We show several examples of studies that show that data reduction in low dimensional components commonly occurs in cognitive data, also when measured with high resolution signals. In the second chapter, we show that visual exploration is low dimensional and driven by intrinsic factors. In the following chapter, we show that these visual exploration phenotypes correlate with spontaneous brain activity (as measured with hd-EEG) recorded one year later. Finally, in the fifth chapter, we describe a behavioural correlate of free visual exploration: visual memory recall. By transforming audio recordings in 2D maps with a novel method, we show that there is an overlap between gaze and memory topography. Gaze fixations outperform purely stimulus-driven models, and this unbalance varies in clusters of participants.
