The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

ABSTRACT:
The search for the neural correlates that characterize
hypnosis is a topic of great interest in neurosciences. As a main aim of the present investigations
we tried to investigate whether suggestions of a subjective experience induced by hypnosis
are in fact accompanied by corresponding neuronal changes in the brain. Methods: We
analysed brain activity in hypnosis using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI),
positron emission tomography (PET) and electroencephalography (EEG). Results: The brain
reacts to suggestions under hypnosis differently compared to instructions without hypnosis.
Using fMRI, functional changes in effective connectivity were observed in a visual illusion
condition. When a grey chart was presented in hypnosis and subjects were asked to perceive
it in colours, both the right fusiform gyrus and the ACC were found to receive bilateral input
from intraparietal sulcus. Learning of high-imagery words in hypnosis was associated with (i)
more pronounced bilateral activation in the occipital cortex and prefrontal areas (PET) and
(ii) an improved memory performance. In an EEG study the neurophysiological correlates of
a motor suggestion in hypnosis were systematically analysed. During arm levitation, significant changes in EEG activity were observed which were most pronounced in sensory motor
areas. The suggested movement was perceived as being external. Different activity patterns
occurred in deep hypnosis as compared to light hypnosis. Findings were specific to hypnosis
and differed from the neuronal correlates of a meditative trance. Conclusions: Hypnotic suggestions
and illusions increase the experience of reality and correlate with specific brain
activation patterns. Visual and motor illusions resulted in an enhanced neuronal response in
brain areas that play a crucial role in perception and/or motor processing.

We tried to bridge the gap between the two main study types concerning meditation by conducting a longitudinal study on meditation training with different types of assessment strategies including brain imaging techniques (fMRI) using the paradigm of "binocular rivalry" by testing the effects of attentional training on the switching rate during several measures. Eighteen healthy right-handed volunteers (5 males, 13 females, ages 20-57, M = 32.8) participated in the first (baseline; t0) measures. After the first measures and after participating in the meditation training for a few times eleven participants left the study and were not available for further measures. Seven participants (1 male, 6 females, ages 20-57, M = 37.2) remained in the study and took part in all the subsequent measures (t1, t2, t3). Behavioural measurements indicate that the ability to focus on the desired percept while suppressing the undesired one improved during the course of the meditation training. We found clear cut effects after six months of training in all participants concerning their attentional abilities (“attending to the stimulus“ vs. "passively viewing“), differences were observed and characterized by activations in the left and right superior frontal and middle gyrus, suggesting an enhanced capacity for selective attention. No clear cut effects were found concerning our hypotheses about binocular rivalry. On a single-subject level remarkable changes were found in some subjects concerning mindfulness, well-being, clarity to and repair of their own feelings and also in the ability to improve in the paradigm of binocular rivalry.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Neuroscientific evidence interprets both hypnotic trance induction and different meditation traditions as modified states of consciousness that emphasize attention, concentration and the letting go of thoughts, but they differ in terms of sensory input, processing, memory, and the sense of time. Furthermore, hypnosis is based on the suggestibility of a person and meditation on mindfulness; therefore it is not surprising to find differential brain plasticity changes. We analysed shared and non-shared neural substrates using electroencephalography (EEG), positron emission tomography (PET), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Most pronounced EEG changes were in deep as compared to light hypnosis (step-by-step induction) and in arm levitation where suggested movement was perceived as external. In a within-subject-design changes in brain activity during hypnosis and Tibetan Buddhist meditation were compared. High amplitudes in alpha frequency bands were most pronounced with meditation at frontal positions and with hypnosis in central and temporal locations. Significantly greater activity in theta 2 band was observed only with hypnosis in both hemispheres. PET cerebral activation patterns of imagery-mediated learning were analysed in hypnosis in a within-subject-design. Compared with baseline the learning of high-imagery words was associated with (i) more pronounced bilateral activation in the occipital cortex and prefrontal areas and (ii) improved memory performance. Visual illusion in hypnosis was studied with fMRI, analysed with Granger Causality Mapping, showing changes in the effective connectivity relations of fusiform gyrus, anterior cingulate cortex and intraparietal sulcus. Little is known about the neurobiological basis of the process of enhancing cognitive and emotional traits in meditation. In a longitudinal fMRI study attention abilities through intensive Soto-Zen meditation were investigated before (baseline), after training (6 months) and at follow-up (9 months). After six months differences were observed in the left inferior and left superior frontal gyrus; after 9 months activations in the left precuneus. Taken together, the findings advance understanding of the neural mechanisms that underlie hypnosis and meditation. Further studies with a greater sample size are needed to explore the differences and commonalities of hypnosis and different meditation techniques.

That meditation and relaxation training may be highly effective in promoting effective emotion regulation capacities could be indicated by previous (health) research. But in spite of a huge amount of empirical studies on meditation little is known about the process that leads to such positive changes and its impact on the brain. The considerable discrepancy among results is thereby most likely due to the heterogenity of meditation practices studied and the difficulty in controlling the degree of practitioners´ expertise. Concerning the participants there have been two different approaches in meditation research: (i) studies on advanced and highly skilled meditators and (ii) studies on novices which start meditation training usually in a
clinical setting as adjuvant therapy.
The present study was one of the first fMRI studies to examine longitudinal meditation effects in a within-subject design. 17 persons started with an intensive meditation training in the tradition of Soto-Zen. The assessments (psychological, neurophysiological) were conducted before (baseline), during (3 months), after the training (6 months) and in a follow-up (9 months). Due to a drop out rate of almost fifty percent we kept on systematically evaluating the remaining seven persons during 9 months. Our main focus concerning the study group was on the process of enhancing sustained attention abilities through meditation as well as developing a mindful attitude. By studying the neural mechanisms underlying attention we analyzed their relation to changes of emotional and socio-behavioural traits. The experimental paradigm used in combination with brain-imaging by fMRI was the one of „binocular rivalry“, which has recently gained wider prominence as a tool for studying (visual) consciousness and focused attention.
After six months clear affects could be found in all participants, marked by activations in frontal brain regions indicating enhanced capacities for selective attention after an intensive meditation training. On the single subject level it became clear that there were remarkable changes in some of the subjects concerning mindfulness, well-being, clarity to and repair of their own feelings and even in the paradigm of binocular rivalry.
Taken together, the findings advance our understanding of the neural mechanisms that underlie meditation effects. Further studies with a greater sample size as well as qualitative studies that would bring a lot more insight in the psychological mechanisms that accompany intensive meditation trainings are strongly recommended.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Acting efficiently in the world depends on the activity of motor and somatosensory systems, the integration of which is necessary for the proper functioning of the sensorimotor loop (SL). Profound alterations of SL functioning follow spinal cord injury (SCI), a condition that brings about a disconnection of the body from the brain. Such disconnection creates a substantial deprivation of somatosensorial inputs and motor outputs. Consequent somatic deficits and motor paralysis affect the body below the lesion level. A complete restoration of normal functions of the SL cannot be expected until basic neuroscience has found a way to re-establish the interrupted neural connectivity. Meanwhile, studies should focus on the development of technical solutions for dealing with the disruption of the sensorimotor loop. This review discusses the structural and functional adaptive reorganization of the brain after SCI, and the maladaptive mechanisms that impact on the processing of body related information, which alter motor imagery strategies and EEG signals. Studies that show how residual functions (e.g. face tactile sensitivity) may help people to restore a normal body image are also reviewed. Finally, data on how brain and residual body signals may be used to improve brain computer interface systems is discussed in relation to the issue of how such systems may help SCI people to re-enter the world and interact with objects and other individuals.

BACKGROUND
Little is known on the effect of early brain lesion on the acquisition of language in infants. Patients who suffered a left hemisphere injury during prenatal or perinatal periods are of great interest, as they present individual differences in their degree of language recovery. Only few fMRI data collected in children with perinatal left-hemisphere brain lesions have brought evidence that the undamaged right-hemisphere is able to take over language functions as revealed by near to normal linguistic processing, thus supporting a model of recovery based on inter-hemispheric transfer of function. It is still an open question to which extent language reorganization and plasticity processes occurring after an early brain insult is enough for normal language development.
AIMS
We aimed at better understanding how functional and structural connectivity during brain maturation is reorganized after perinatal ischemic stroke and its impact in language development.
METHOD
Neurocognitive development was assessed at 25-42 months of age after perinatal stroke (N=10). Word learning abilities were also assessed using a fast-mapping task. Functional and structural (DTI)-MRI imaging was measured (including intrinsic connectivity).
RESULTS
The combination of functional and structural MRI as well as language and language learning measures, showed that children who had a stroke affecting crucial language areas, including white-matter pathways of the left hemisphere, are especially vulnerable to the negative impact of the stroke on their later language outcomes.
CONCLUSION
These results suggest that the amount of right lateralized reorganization induced by early left lesion predicts better outcomes in language development.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Clinical and research evidence supports the efficacy of rehabilitative intervention for improving targeted skills or global outcomes in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, putative mechanisms of structural and functional brain changes are poorly understood. This review aims to investigate the research literature on the neural circuit modifications after non-pharmacological intervention. For this purpose, longitudinal studies that used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based techniques at the start and at the end of the trial to evaluate the neural effects of rehabilitative treatment in subjects with ASD were identified. The six included studies involved a limited number of patients in the active group (from 2 to 16), and differed by acquisition method (task-related and resting-state functional MRI) as well as by functional MRI tasks. Overall, the results produced by the selected investigations demonstrated brain plasticity during the treatment interval that results in an activation/functional connectivity more similar to those of subjects with typical development (TD). Repeated MRI evaluation may represent a promising tool for the detection of neural changes in response to treatment in patients with ASD. However, large-scale randomized controlled trials after standardized rehabilitative intervention are required before translating these preliminary results into clinical use.

The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

BACKGROUND:
Music training is a well-established model of brain plasticity. Most studies compare professional musicians with non-musicians or examine effects of individual instrumental training in childhood. Effects of collective music training conducted in regular schools remain poorly understood.
AIM:
To determine near and far transfer effects in behaviour and neural correlates of a relatively short collective Orff-based music training program in school-age children, as compared to an analogous program in sports and to a passive control group.
METHOD
Longitudinal training study with pre-test (T1), training, post-test (T2) and follow-up (T3), in three groups of 8-year-old children: music, basketball and no specific training. Children were matched on major cognitive and demographic variables and pseudorandomly assigned to one of the groups. Behavioral measures on musical and other cognitive abilities, and on brain structural MRI and resting-state fMRI, were collected at T1, T2 and T3.
RESULTS
Learning effects were found for all groups. Specific behavioural benefits driven by music training were mostly near transfer effects in the music domain and fine motor abilities, but far transfer effects in simple arithmetics and phonological decoding were also found. Music training induced plasticity on gray-matter volume of the left cerebellum that related to rhythm discrimination at T1 and correlated with gains in motor performance; it also lead to higher connectivity between the auditory and sensorimotor networks suggesting enhanced audio-motor coordination.
CONCLUSION
A resource-lean music training program was sufficient to induce specific behavioural benefits associated in part with plastic changes in gray matter volume and functional neural connectivity.

Brain imaging methods such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) have already been used to decipher the functional and structural brain changes occurring during normal language development. However, little is known about the differentiation of the language network after an early lesion. While in adults, stroke over the left hemisphere generally induces post-stroke aphasia, it is not always the case when a stroke occurs in the perinatal period, thus revealing a remarkable plastic power of the language network during early development. In particular, the role of perilesional tissues, as opposed to undamaged brain areas in the functional recovery of language functions after an early insult, remains unclear. In this review article, we provide an overview of the extant literature using functional and structural neuroimaging data revealing the signatures of brain plasticity underlying near-normal language development.
