The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Relative power within the delta, theta, low-alpha, high-alpha, and gamma electroencephalographic spectra of 8 human volunteers was recorded over the left and right frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes during and after the circumcerebral application through an array of 8 solenoids of 6 different configurations of weak (5 to 10 microTesla) magnetic fields. The solenoids were equally spaced around the subject's head along a horizontal plane above the ears. An approximately 30% increase in power within the theta band occurred transcerebrally during the application of a specific configuration, previously shown to affect subjective time, involving 20-msec. rates of change in the duration of delivery of the magnetic fields to each successive solenoid. Compared to the left hemisphere, the right hemisphere displayed a 20% increase in power within the 5.0- to 5.9-Hz range for all 6 configurations. The results suggest that very complex magnetic fields with the appropriate temporal parameters rotated around and within brain space can interact with the cerebral processes, measured as specific hands of frequencies, generating consciousness. Implications for the roles of hippocampal theta activity, cortical resonance, and Goldstone bosons in these processes are discussed.

SUMMARY:
There are several useful methods to examine brain functions from outside of the body. One of them is fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) which can be used to measure only the cerebral cortex near the scalp (depth: 2-3 cm). fNIRS is non-stressful the same as EEG measurements, so it is a suitable method for sensitive subjects. The present paper deals with 3 topics using fNIRS. First, brain blood flow was measured while guessing a hidden figure in a forced-choice test Spontaneous blood flow change often occurred at the temporal lobe, and awareness was slightly more activated at that time. Second, the cognitive process for human facial expressions was researched. It is said that Japanese are expressionless or vague compared with people of other cultures. Subjects tried to distinguish emotions of vague faces made by a Japanese actress. The task was relatively easy for Japanese while it was difficult for Chinese. Third, brain blood flow of various experts was measured while they were guessing for the invalid parts of the inside of human body or for a small thing hidden in a dark box Brain activities of star psychics during clairvoyance were not similar to activities of other subjects. The characteristic activated area of star psychics was the prefrontal area although the guessing task required formulating visual images and many subjects showed activation of the right temporal lobe.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The activity of the brain in pain modulation during chronic pain is changed. In general, the net balance of descending modulation during chronic pain consists on a decrease of descending inhibitory actions and an increase of facilitatory effects. Synchronous changes in neuronal responses at the spinal cord and pain control centres in the brain were detected. Variations in the expression of neurotransmitters and receptors in pain control centres of the brain may account for the effects of chronic pain. To target pain control centres of the brain, we elected a gene therapy approach based on the sustained and directed effects of the technique. The overexpression of pre-proenkephalin using a replication-defective vector derived from Herpes Simplex type 1 (HSV-1) in a pain control area of the brain (the caudal ventrolateral medulla), decreased behavioural responses in an inflammatory pain model, the formalin test, and inhibited nociceptive responses of spinal neurons. A reversal of behavioural pain responses was also induced in a traumatic neuropathic pain model using a HSV-1 vector in which a tissue-specific promoter (tyrosine hydroxylase; TH) controlled the expression oh the TH transgene inserted in an antisense sequence. Using this vector, the decrease in the release of noradrenaline in a pain facilitatory centre (the dorsal reticular nucleus) induced long-lasting antinociceptive effects, detected during 22 days. Gene therapy may be considered an excellent molecular tool to understand the effects of chronic pain installation in pain control circuits of the brain. Furthermore, based on detailed morphofunctional knowledge of pain control centres of the brain and by electing the vector type, determining the better promoter and the suitable transgene for the construct, the effects of chronic pain may be corrected using gene therapy approaches.

The scientific study of subjective experience is a current major research area in the neurosciences. Coordination patterns of brain activity are being studied to address the question of how brain function relates to behaviour, and particularly methods to estimate neuronal synchronization can unravel the spatio-temporal dynamics of the transient formation of neuronal assemblies. We report here a biophysical correlate of subjective experience. Subjects visualised figures with different levels of noise, while their brain activity was recorded using magnetoencephalography (MEG), and reported the moment in time (corresponding to a noise level) of figure recognition, which varied between individuals, as well as the moment when they saw the figure more clearly, which was mostly common among the participants (thus less subjective). This latter moment is considered to represent psychophysical stochastic resonance (PSR). Fluctuations in neuronal synchronization, quantified using a diffusion coefficient, were lower in occipital cortex when subjects recognised the figure, for a certain noise level, but did not correlate with the moment of PSR. A different pattern was observed in frontal cortex, where lower values of the diffusion coefficient in neuronal synchronization was maintained from the moment of recognition to the moment of PSR. No specific pattern was found analysing signals from temporal or parietal cortical areas. These observations provide support for distinct synchronization patterns in different cortical areas, and represent another demonstration that the subjective, first-person perspective is accessible to scientific methods.

Practitioners from a variety of spiritual traditions occasionally report strong psychophysiological reactions when a spiritual teacher (“guru”) who has achieved some level of mastery directs his or her attention toward the practitioner. Close proximity between guru and practitioner is purportedly not a limitation in transmitting or receiving spiritual transmission. We asked a guru to periodically send energy remotely to six recipients, one at a time, while they were isolated in our lab’s electromagnetically shielded chamber some 50 meters away. We recorded the recipients’ EEG (32 channels) and several autonomic measures throughout the testing period. None of the recipients knew the guru, and all were blind to when he was sending energy. Analysis of the resulting data suggested that in some recipients the remote intervention by the guru appeared to produce significant variations in physiology. We also studied the effect on the recipients’ physiology to the physical proximity of the guru, as compared to a “sham guru,” i.e., an actor playing the part of a guru. Again we found indications of differences in physiological reaction in some of the participants depending on whether the guru was real or sham. This preliminary investigation indicates that it is possible to study claims about spiritual transmission effects using psychophysiological methods under controlled conditions, and it also suggests that at least some of the traditionally reported effects about shaktipat might be objectively measurable.

Practitioners from a wide variety of spiritual traditions occasionally report strong psychophysiological responses when they are in the presence of a spiritual teacher who has achieved some level of mastery, particularly when the teacher directs attention or intention toward the practitioner. While many such anecdotal reports of this phenomenon exist, almost no empirical research has been conducted to examine it. There are no studies published that we are aware of in the major scientific databases referring to empirical laboratory studies of spiritual transmission (shaktipat). The aim of the proposed work is to objectively examine the psychophysiological correlates of spiritual transmission in both transmitters and recipients under controlled laboratory conditions. Spiritual transmission is said to occur through sight, sound, touch, or thought. For example, the teacher may simply gaze at the student, speak words or make sounds, touch the student with their hands or with a feather, or transmit spiritual energy through intention or thought. Proximity does not appear to be required. There are many anecdotal accounts of recipients who experienced transmission by looking at a photograph of a spiritual teacher. In the devotional traditions of Hinduism, practitioners often place photos of their teachers in their environments (home, car, workplace) to remain in connection with the teacher's transmission. We run a block-design protocol in which we tested 3 different senders experienced in spiritual transmission, and 10 different receivers who were either disciples of the guru or naive subjects. Experiments were performed at two locations in California in two different laboratories. Senders and receivers sat in different rooms at about 30 meters distance of each other. Two conditions alternated: a condition of active spiritual transmission and a condition of rest. We recorded distant spiritual transmission and rest for 5 consecutive sessions of 5 minutes each. On 2 of the 5 sessions (sessions 2 and 4), the sender was instructed to give spiritual transmission. During rest (sessions 1, 3, and 5), the sender remained silent and attempted to keep his mind out of the spiritual transmission state. The receiving subjects were asked to stay in a meditative and receptive mental state. We used the EEGLAB software (www.sccn.ucsd.edu/eeglab) to analyze the electro-encephalographic signals from both senders and receivers focusing on the brain activity during the spiritual transmission mental state compared to the brain activity during the rest state. For some of the subjects, we also performed correlation analysis between scalp channels of senders and receivers. False detection rate (FDR) was used to correct for multiple comparisons. We report significant activity in receivers when senders are performing spiritual transmission at a distance. We also report significant brain correlations between senders and receivers in some of the testing sessions. These results suggest that spiritual transmission to an isolated person at a distance appears to produce measurable physiological effects in some distant receivers.

Prior research has identified the lateral occipital complex (LOC) as a critical cortical region for the representation of object shape in humans. However, little is known about the nature of the representations contained in the LOC and their relationship to the perceptual experience of shape. We used human functional MRI to measure the physical, behavioral, and neural similarity between pairs of novel shapes to ask whether the representations of shape contained in subregions of the LOC more closely reflect the physical stimuli themselves, or the perceptual experience of those stimuli. Perceptual similarity measures for each pair of shapes were obtained from a psychophysical same-different task; physical similarity measures were based on stimulus parameters; and neural similarity measures were obtained from multivoxel pattern analysis methods applied to anterior LOC (pFs) and posterior LOC (LO). We found that the pattern of pairwise shape similarities in LO most closely matched physical shape similarities, whereas shape similarities in pFs most closely matched perceptual shape similarities. Further, shape representations were similar across participants in LO but highly variable across participants in pFs. Together, these findings indicate that activation patterns in subregions of object-selective cortex encode objects according to a hierarchy, with stimulus-based representations in posterior regions and subjective and observer-specific representations in anterior regions.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether correlated event-related potentials (ERPs) can be detected between the brains of spatially and sensory isolated human subjects.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Simultaneous digitized electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded from the occipital area in pairs of human subjects placed in sound attenuated rooms separated by 10 meters. One person relaxed in one of the rooms while the other received visual stimulation while in the other room. Prior to each experiment, members of the pair were randomly designated as sender and receiver. Sessions were subsequently repeated with subjects reversing their roles. Previous to each session, the sender was instructed "to attempt sending an image/thought." The receiver was instructed "to remain open to receive any image/thought from his/her partner." Alternating stimulus-on/stimulus-off conditions were presented throughout the session to the sender, while a stimulus-off condition was presented to the receiver.
SUBJECTS: Thirty-seven (37) female, and 23 male subjects (n = 60; 30 pairs) participated in the study. Subjects knew each other well and claimed to have previous experience of being emotionally/psychologically connected to one another.
OUTCOME MEASURES: A Runs test was applied to compare EEG "hits" in the receiver's EEG during the sender' stimulus-on condition versus sender's stimulus-off conditions. Test results at p < 0.01 were considered evidence of correlated brain signals. Pairs in whom at least one member had significant results were invited back for replication.
RESULTS: Of the 60 subjects tested, 5 (4 women/1 man) showed significantly higher brain activation (p < 0.01) during their sending partner's stimulus-on condition as compared to stimulus-off condition. Using the Stouffer z meta-analytic method all receiver EEG results across all 60 subjects were combined by transforming the individual session p values into z scores. Data analyses showed overall significant results for EEG data recorded during the flickering condition (z =-3.28, p = 0.0005) as well as nonsignificant results for data recorded during the static condition (z = 0.35, p = 0.64). Four pairs participated in a replication experiment during which one pair replicated the effect.
CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that in some pairs of human subjects a signal may be detected in the brain of a distant member of the pair when the brain of the other member is visually stimulated. These data support the findings of similar studies performed in seven laboratories reported in the peer-reviewed literature since 1963. Research in this area should now proceed with investigation of its physical and biologic mechanism, its generalizability to varying populations and relationships, and its clinical application.

Long-term exposure to transmeridian flights has been shown to impact cognitive functioning. Nevertheless, the immediate effects of jet lag in the activation of specific brain networks have not been investigated. We analyzed the impact of short-term jet lag on the activation of the default mode network (DMN). A group of individuals who were on a transmeridian flight and a control group went through a functional magnetic resonance imaging acquisition. Statistical analysis was performed to test for differences in the DMN activation between groups. Participants from the jet lag group presented decreased activation in the anterior nodes of the DMN, specifically in bilateral medial prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortex. No areas of increased activation were observed for the jet lag group. These results may be suggestive of a negative impact of jet lag on important cognitive functions such as introspection, emotional regulation and decision making in a few days after individuals arrive at their destination.

Nutrition is a key determinant of health, wellbeing and aging. Recent evidences strongly suggest that nutritional amino acids (AAs) are important mediators of this fitness effect in multiple species, including humans. Accordingly, animals have developed behavioral strategies to ensure a proper balance of AA intake. We have for example shown that upon yeast (main dietary protein source of fruit flies) or AA deprivation Drosophila melanogaster increases the intake of yeast leading to a switch in feeding preference from sucrose to yeast. This change in feeding choice underlies the dietary basis for nutritional AA homeostasis and serves as a powerful paradigm to study nutrient choice and homeostasis.
We have identified a distinct class of Drosophila melanogaster gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) required for intake of yeast. We show that gustatory receptor neurons of the proboscis act in parallel to mediate yeast feeding. While nutritional and reproductive states act in concert to drive yeast appetite, we find a separation of these state signals at the level of yeast GRNs, with amino acid but not mating state enhancing yeast GRN gain. Importantly, the sensitivity of sweet GRNs to sugar is not increased by protein deprivation, providing a potential basis for this nutrient-specific appetite. The emerging picture is that different internal states act at distinct levels of a specific gustatory processing circuit to elicit nutrient-specific appetites towards a complex, ecologically relevant protein source.
Furthermore, we have made important additional discoveries at the level of the impact of gut bacteria on the selection of nutrients and have developed a new approach using genome information for designing diets optimizing both aging and reproductive output.
We have therefore achieved the main goals of the project which aimed at identifying and characterizing circuits regulating nutrient homeostasis and exploring the impact of nutrients on lifespan with a special focus on amino acids.

BACKGROUND:
Recent studies suggest that clinically sound ventriculomegaly in dogs could be a preliminary form of the clinically significant hydrocephalus. We evaluated changes of ventricular volumes in awake functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) trained dogs with indirectly assessed cognitive abilities over time (thus avoiding the use of anaesthetics, which can alter the pressure). Our research question was whether ventricular enlargement developing over time would have any detrimental effect on staying still while being scanned; which can be extrapolated to the ability to pay attention and to exert inhibition.
METHODS:
Seven healthy dogs, 2–8 years old at the baseline scan and 4 years older at rescan, participated in a rigorous and gradual training for staying motionless (<2 mm) in the magnetic resonance (MR) scanner without any sedation during 6 minute-long structural MR sequences. On T1 structural images, volumetric analyses of the lateral ventricles were completed by software guided semi-automated tissue-type segmentations performed with FMRIB Software Library (FSL, Analysis Group, Oxford, UK).
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS:
We report significant enlargement for both ventricles (left: 47.46 %, right: 46.07 %) over time while dogs retained high levels of attention and inhibition. The results suggest that even considerable ventricular enlargement arising during normal aging does not necessarily reflect observable pathological changes in behavior.

BACKGROUND
Goal-directed behavior often requires integrating current sensory information with the prior history of stimuli, actions and outcomes. However, if the past is uninformative for the task at hand, using prior history can induce disadvantageous behavioral biases.
AIMS
Study the dynamics and neuronal basis of sequential biases in decision-making.
Study the neuronal representation of biases in the prefrontal cortex of non-human primates.
Testing a sequential-processing theory of decision making and its link to biased behavior.
METHOD
Experiments with highly-trained monkeys performing a motion direction discrimination task, as well as analysis of existing datasets.
RESULTS
Here, we report the existence of history-dependent choice biases in highly-trained monkeys performing a motion direction discrimination task where only the current stimulus was behaviorally relevant. The observed biases fluctuated at two separate time scales: slow, spanning tens to hundreds of trials, and fast, involving variables from the previous trial. These biases were predictive of upcoming choices, and more so on trials with weak stimuli.
We found that pre-stimulus activity of neuronal ensembles in prearcuate gyrus represented biases and was also predictive of the monkey’s upcoming choices. We show that similar axes in the neural population state space represent both bias and choices.
CONCLUSIONS
Further, biases are incorporated into the decision-making process as an offset of baseline activity along the decision axes that persists throughout the integration process of sensory evidence.

Spaceflight severely impacts the human body. Moreover, little is known about how gravity and gravitational alterations affect the human brain. Here, we aimed at measuring the effects of acute exposure to gravity transitions. We exposed 28 naïve participants to repetitive alterations between normal, hyper- and microgravity induced by a parabolic flight (PF) and measured functional MRI connectivity changes. Scans were acquired before and after the PF. To mitigate motion sickness, PF participants received scopolamine prior to PF. To account for the scopolamine, 12 non-PF controls were scanned prior to and after scopolamine injection. Changes in functional connectivity were explored with the Intrinsic Connectivity Contrast (ICC). Seed-based analysis on the regions exhibiting localized changes was subsequently performed to understand the networks associated with the identified nodes. We found that the PF group was characterized by lower ICC scores in the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ), an area involved in multisensory integration and spatial tasks. The encompassed network revealed PF-related decreases in within- and inter-hemispheric anticorrelations between the rTPJ and the supramarginal gyri, indicating both altered vestibular and self-related functions. Our findings shed light how the brain copes with gravity transitions, on gravity internalization and are relevant for the understanding of bodily self-consciousness.
