The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Prospective longitudinal investigations are needed to identify causal processes leading to schizophrenia. However, there is presently no cost-effective way to identify children who are at risk of developing schizophrenia spectrum disorders: Although having a family history of schizophrenia is associated with elevated risk for developing spectrum disorders, the majority of individuals with schizophrenia do not have an afflicted relative. The present study aimed to test the feasibility of screening a community sample of children, aged 9 to 12 years, to identify children who experienced a triad of putative antecedents of schizophrenia that had been identified from previous research, including: (1) speech and/or motor development lags or problems; (2) social, emotional, or behavioural problems; and (3) psychotic-like-experiences (PLEs). 548 children and 264 caregivers completed questionnaires. 9.2% of boys and 4.1% of girls displayed the triad of antecedents. 58.9% of the children reported "certain experience" of one or more PLEs. The results suggest that questionnaire screening of community samples of children for the putative antecedents of schizophrenia spectrum disorders is feasible. Accuracy of identification will only be established by follow-up studies.

BACKGROUND:
Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies have identified widespread grey matter abnormalities in individuals with schizophrenia and less extensive abnormalities in first-episode patients and high-risk individuals defined by familial/genetic vulnerability or ultra high-risk criteria (Chan et al., in press. Schizophrenia Bulletin). Using a novel community screening method, we identified children who present multiple putative antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz) who may bear elevated risk for developing the disorder. We aimed to determine whether ASz children show grey matter abnormalities relative to typically-developing (TD) children with no antecedents.
METHODS:
Thirty TD (Mage = 10.6 years) and nineteen ASz (Mage = 10.5 years) children completed structural MRI scanning (3T GE). Paediatric templates were created from sample demographics (age and gender) using the Template-O-Matic toolbox (Wilke et al, 2008; NeuroImage 41: 903–913). Differences in grey matter volume (GMV) and concentration (GMC) were examined using VBM methods implemented in Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM5).
RESULTS:
GMC and GMV were signifi cantly decreased (P < 0.01, corrected) in ASz children in the right middle frontal gyrus and increased in the left superior temporal gyrus, relative to TD children. Additionally, signifi cant GMC decreases were apparent in ASz children in the right inferior frontal and left precentral gyrii.
CONCLUSIONS:
ASz children aged 9–13 years show grey matter abnormalities in frontal and temporal brain regions that are consistent with those
observed in adults with schizophrenia. Furthermore, individuals with schizophrenia have been shown to experience functional abnormality in these same regions during working memory, inhibition and motor function tasks and during auditory hallucinations.

Deficits in face emotion processing are observed in individuals with schizophrenia and in “high-risk” young relatives of schizophrenia
patients (Eack et al., 2010, Schizophrenia Bulletin, in press). We recently established a novel questionnaire method of identifying children who present multiple putative antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz) who may bear elevated risk of developing the disorder (Laurens et al., 2007, Schizophrenia Research 90: 130–146). The current study aimed to determine whether ASz children show deficits in face emotion processing compared to typically-developing (TD) children who do not present with the antecedents.
METHODS:
Twenty ASz (6 female, mean age 12 years 3 months) and 33 TD children (17 female, mean age 12 years 7 months) completed the Penn Emotion Recognition Task, comprising 40 colour photographs of happy, sad, angry, scared or neutral emotions presented serially. Participants selected the emotion label that most accurately refl ected the emotion in each displayed face.

0.05), over-attribute emotions to neutral faces (P = 0.02), and significantly more often misattribute neutral faces as negative (P = 0.01). The majority of misattributions of neutral faces to negative emotions were due to ASz children mislabelling neutral faces as sad (78%).
CONCLUSIONS:
Children presenting multiple putative antecedents of schizophrenia show similar face emotion processing deficits to young relatives at familial high-risk for schizophrenia. Only longitudinal followup of ASz children will establish whether these deficits are a potential marker for schizophrenia.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND:
Recognising and intervening with individuals at risk for schizophrenia prior to illness onset may minimise or prevent disability, but elucidating risk status is challenging. We have developed a novel method of screening community samples to identify children who present multiple putative antecedents of schizophrenia that distinguish individuals who later develop illness from those who do not [1].
METHODS:
We used questionnaires to identify children, aged 9-12 years, who present a triad of antecedents, namely: (i) psychotic-like experiences [PLEs]; (ii) a speech/motor development delay or abnormality; and (iii) a social, emotional, or behavioural problem.
RESULTS:
Data from 1,347 child and caregiver dyads indicate that 9.5% (13.2% boys, 6.1% girls) present the antecedent triad. Among these, 69% report experiencing distress or impairment associated with PLEs. Only longitudinal follow-up can ascertain the degree to which the triad predicts later schizophrenia, yet, we have established that these children already present features present in schizophrenia, including: (i) brain dysfunction during event-related potential (ERP) recordings of error processing and of involuntary attention orienting; (ii) similar neurocognitive deficits as observed in prodromal and first-episode samples; (iii) increased involuntary dyskinetic movements of the face and upper body; (iv) fewer positive and more negative parenting experiences; and (v) triad prevalence is elevated among UK children of African-Caribbean
and black African ethnicity, mimicking the increased prevalence of schizophrenia among these groups in the UK.
CONCLUSIONS:
These children may constitute appropriate targets for preventive interventions for schizophrenia. Longitudinal follow-up of the children, with additional measures, is ongoing.

We have proposed that children who present psychotic-like experiences as part of a triad of antecedents of schizophrenia (including also a speech and/or motor developmental delay or abnormality, and a social, emotional, or behavioural problem) may experience elevated risk for the development of schizophrenia (Laurens et al. 2007). While only longitudinal follow-up will establish the degree to which the triad of antecedents predicts later schizophrenia, the present study examined whether children experiencing the triad also present intellectual and cognitive deficits that characterise first-episode patients with schizophrenia and ‘‘high-risk’’ (prodromal) youth. Questionnaire data from 5 158 children aged 9–12 years and 1 133 of their primary caregivers demonstrated that 9% of children (12% of boys, 6% of girls) present the triad of antecedents. Fifty-eight children (21 presenting the antecedent triad and 37 control children without the antecedents) subsequently completed standardised assessments of IQ (WASI), scholastic achievement (reading, spelling, numerical operations; WIAT), memory (verbal, visual, and working memory; WRAML2) and executive function (verbal fluency, and inhibition; D-KEFS). Children presenting the antecedent triad experienced
moderate deficits in cognitive function (mean effect size -0.65, range -0.56 to -0.77) relative to control children, with significant performance decrements observed in all domains (excepting a non-significant trend in visual memory performance). Children who present antecedents of schizophrenia demonstrate moderate intellectual and cognitive impairments that are comparable to those observed in prodromal youth (mean effect size ;0.8), but less marked than deficits apparent in first-episode patients (mean effect sizes;1.1–1.8). Children experiencing the antecedents of schizophrenia might represent a ‘‘high-risk’’ population who may benefit

BACKGROUND:
Persisting psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are associated with an increased risk of internalising symptoms in adolescence. Whether this association holds similarly for externalising symptoms, and from mid-childhood, is unclear. This prospective study investigated the extent to which PLE persistence was associated with internalising and externalising psychopathology in a community sample of children aged 9–11years at study commencement.
METHODS:
8099 children (mean age 10.4years) completed questionnaires assessing PLEs, externalising and internalising symptoms. A subsample of 547 children completed reassessment, on average, two years later.
RESULTS:
Two-thirds (66%) of children reported PLEs at baseline. Approximately two years later, PLEs persisted in 39% of those children. After adjustment for previous psychopathology and other potential confounds, children with persisting PLEs were at higher risk for internalising (odds ratio [OR]=1.94; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13–3.34) and externalising (OR=1.97; 95% CI 1.19–3.26) psychopathology than children whose PLEs remitted; and, than children who never presented PLEs.
CONCLUSIONS:
Persistent PLEs from mid-childhood are associated with later internalising and externalising psychopathology in the general population, whereas transitory PLEs may be part of a spectrum of normative childhood development. Interventions that target persistent PLEs may contribute to a reduction in common childhood psychopathology.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Sleep spindles act as a powerful marker of individual differences in cognitive ability. Sleep spindle parameters correlate with both age-related changes in cognitive abilities and with the age-independent concept of IQ. While some studies have specifically demonstrated the relationship between sleep spindles and intelligence in young children, our previous work in older subjects revealed sex differences in the sleep spindle correlates of IQ, which was never investigated in small children before. We investigated the relationship between age, Raven Colored Progressive Matrices (CPM) scores and sleep spindles in 28 young children (age 4-8 years, 15 girls). We specifically investigated sex differences in the psychometric correlates of sleep spindles. We also aimed to separate the correlates of sleep spindles that are because of age-related maturation from other effects that reflect an age-independent relationship between sleep spindles and general intelligence. Our results revealed a modest positive correlation between fast spindle amplitude and age. Raven CPM scores positively correlated with both slow and fast spindle amplitude, but this effect remained a tendency in males and vanished after correcting for the effects of age. Age-corrected correlations between Raven CPM scores and both slow and fast spindle amplitude were only significant in females. Overall, our results show that in male children sleep spindles are a maturational marker, but in female children they indicate trait-like intelligence, in line with previous studies in adolescent and adult subjects. Thalamocortical white matter connectivity may be the underlying mechanism behind both higher spindle amplitude and higher intelligence in female, but not male subjects.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Individual differences in face identity recognition abilities are present across the lifespan, but require developmentally differentiated methods of assessment. Here, we examine the empirical validity of a widely-used face identity recognition measure, the Cambridge Face Memory Test for Children (CFMT-C). Logistic mixed-effects modelling of a large data set (607 children, 5 – 12 years) replicates and extends the findings of the only previous normative study of the CFMT-C (Croydon et al., 2014). This novel analytical approach enables us to take into account sources of variability typically overlooked in a classical analysis. We consider variability introduced by the task, alongside variability across children, to provide the first comprehensive characterisation of the interactive effects of factors inherent to participants (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity), and the test (stage: face learning, simple recognition, harder recognition) on face memory performance. In line with past findings we clearly observed age-related improvement in the task. Additionally, for the first time we report that this developmental effect is significantly more pronounced in the later, harder stages of the task; that there is an effect of gender, with females having better performance; and that consideration of participant ethnicity or testing context did not alter the best fitting model of these data. These results highlight the value of applying multi-level statistical models to characterise the factors driving performance variability, providing evidence of the divergence in recognition abilities across genders, and confirming the stability of the CFMT-C in assessing face recognition abilities across variable experimental contexts and with diverse participant groups.
