Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Neuropsychological findings in eating disorders are somewhat inconsistent. This may be because individual studies have used a broad range of tests on relatively small, heterogeneous clinical groups, thus limiting the detection of subtle neuropsychological differences in these patients. Therefore, rather than using broad assessments of a variety of neuropsychological functions, adoption of a more focused, hypothesis-driven approach based on clinical practice is proposed. This will allow more in-depth investigations of targeted functions and will improve the chances of detecting a problem, of exploring its ecologic validity, and of tailoring a treatment. We have demonstrated this approach using our neuropsychological studies of cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa.

Biases in information processing styles, as measured by neuropsychological tasks, have been reported in the eating disorder literature. In particular, an inflexible, rigid processing style (poor set-shifting) and a bias toward detail to the exclusion of the bigger picture (weak central coherence) have been observed. This report investigates these traits in the overweight population, by comparing the neuropsychological profile of 50 normal-weight and ten overweight members of the general population. Small-to-negligible effect sizes are seen for the set-shifting tasks; however, a mixed profile with moderate-to-strong effect sizes is seen for tasks measuring detail focus. This exploratory study provides an intriguing introduction to neuropsychological profiles in the overweight population. Further exploration of these traits within the overweight/obese population is recommended.

This study investigated the correspondence between self-report and experimental measures of cognitive flexibility in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and healthy controls (HCs). Ninety-four participants (45 individuals with AN and 49 HCs) completed the self-report Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFS) and an experimental task, the Brixton Spatial Anticipation Test. The AN group performed poorly on both measures of cognitive flexibility compared with HCs. There was no significant correlation between the CFS scores and the errors on the Brixton Test for both groups. The findings suggest there is poor correspondence between the self-report measure of cognitive flexibility and performance on the flexibility test. These two assessment tools therefore cannot be used interchangeably to assess cognitive flexibility. Flexibility is an important clinical characteristic in AN. The results suggest that self-report and behavioral measures can be complementary, but cannot be used as an alternative to one another.

Development and preliminary validity of the new scales of Halstead Category Test

The Halstead Category Test (HCT) is a neuropsychological measure that taps into multiple domains of complex non-verbal reasoning and cognitive flexibility, but only yields a single error score, limiting the clinical use of the test. Currently, several authors have proposed additional subscales in order to increase the clinical utility of the HCT. The purpose of this study is to present the new scales and scoring criteria of HCT, as well as to analyze the construct validity of the new scales recently developed to assess specifics domains of executive function: cognitive flexibility, failure to maintain cognitive set, perseveration and memory. Using a sample of Portuguese undergraduate students aged 19-50 years, we will relate the values obtained in the new scales of the HCT with well-established neuropsychological measures (Trail making A and B, Test of Non-Verbal Intelligence, California Learning Verbal Test and Symbol Digit). After data analysis, and based in previous results, we hope to find that the new scales of HCT (perseveration, set of loss, categorization and memory), show clearly a significant associations with the neuropsychological measures used in this study. These results will be compared with international data, with the important starting point for the clinical use of the new scales.

ABSTRACT:
Externalizing is a higher-order psychopathology factor that underpins a number of the most commonly occurring mental disorders, being directly related to acting-out behaviors and poor behavioral control. A common behavioral pattern reflected in many manifestations of externalizing is an apparent failure to learn from experience, raising the possibility that externalizing may involve a deficit in executive cognitive function. To test this possibility, we examined the influence of externalizing on performance on the Halstead Category Test. Participants scoring high on the externalizing vulnerability performed significantly worse on the “Loss of Set – Conceptual” subscale than participants scoring low. This suggests that a higher externalizing vulnerability is associated with an increased difficulty at the level of abstract concept formation and poor cognitive flexibility.

Despite many calls, functional brain magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies are relatively rare in the domain of entrepreneurship research. This methodological brief presents the brain-imaging method of resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) and illustrates its application in neuroentrepreneurship for the first time. In contrast to the traditional task-based fMRI approach, rs-fMRI observes the brain in the absence of cognitive tasks or presentation of stimuli, which offers benefits for improving our understanding of the entrepreneurial mind. Here, we describe the method and provide methodological motivations for performing brain resting-state functional neuroimaging studies on entrepreneurs. In addition, we illustrate the use of seed-based correlation analysis, one of the most common analytical approaches for analyzing rs-fMRI data. In this illustration, we show that habitual entrepreneurs have increased functional connectivity between the insula (a region associated with cognitive flexibility) and the anterior prefrontal cortex (a key region for explorative choice) as compared to managers. This increased connectivity could help promote flexible behavior. Thus in brief, we provide an exemplar of a novel way to expand our understanding of the brain in the domain of entrepreneurship. We discuss possible directions for future research and challenges to be addressed to facilitate the inclusion of re-fMRI studies into neuroentrepreneurship.
