The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A reinterpretation of experimental data on learning was used to formulate a law on data acquisition similar to the Hamiltonian of a mechanical system. A matrix of costs in decision making specifies values attributable to a barrier that opposed to hypothesis formation about decision making. The interpretation of the encoding costs as frequencies of oscillatory phenomena leads to a quantum paradigm based in the models of photoelectric effect as well as of a particle against a potential barrier. Cognitive processes are envisaged as complex phenomena represented by structures linked by valence bounds. This metaphor is used to find some prerequisites to certain types of conscious experience as well as to find an explanation for some pathological distortions of cognitive operations as they are represented in the context of the isolobal model. Those quantum phenomena are understood as representing an analogue programming for specific special purpose computations. The formation of complex chemical structures within the context of isolobal theory is understood as an analog quantum paradigm for complex cognitive computations.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In a well controlled experimental situation, interpersonal relationships were studied using a double script model representation of the social situation that subjects were required to identify.
Results obtained in a group of normal volunteers subjects were analyzed. It is used an abductive model to describe the process of concept attainment by experimental subjects.
The interaction between partial attribute identifications and global characterizations of the simulated situations is described in the context of other psychological processes evoked by the interactions. A block diagram specifies the operations which are performed by a neural network model which implements the cognitive operations of a subject involved in the social interaction under study.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Several tests of frontal lobes functions were administered: Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Tower of London, visual working memory task, and verbal fluency. Other tests assumed to rely on temporal lobe function were administered as well: verbal paired-associates and visual recognition.
The measure of verbal reality-monitoring deficit was strongly associated with hallucinations. It was also correlated with measures of frontal deficit (wisconsin perseverative errors: r = .32, p <.08; perseverative errors in visual search: .37, p <. 05; planning errors in the Tower of London: r = .42, p <.025). By contrast, the measure of verbal memory efficiency that did not involve any reality-monitoring function was not correlated with any of these frontal measures, which shows the specificity of the association with reality-monitoring deficit, rather than memory deficit. The measure of verbal reality-monitoring deficit was also associated with one measure of temporal lobe deficit (visual recognition: -.43, p < .025).
The measure of visual reality-monitoring deficit was associated with visual hallucinations. It was not correlated at all with any frontal measure. However, it was correlated with one measure of temporal lobe deficit (visual recognition: r = -.39, p < 05). By contrast, the measure of visual memory efficiency that did not involve any reality-monitoring function was not correlated with this temporal lobe measure. This suggests that it is actually the confusion between reality and imagination that is involved in this association with temporal dysfunction, rather than a mere deficit in visual memory.

Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
A new method has been developed for the assessment of several factors contributing to intuitive decisions. Technically, the method monitors the pupil dilation preceding choices made in an artificial grammar task. The analysis focuses on the acquirement of implicit knowledge related to a somatic marker. Results indicate that with the new method we can unequivocally show that a somatic marker preceding a decision is a driving “force” for the final choice. Thus the basic ingredient of the “somatic marker” model is supported.
