A randomized controlled feasibility and safety study of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation
Publication year: 2007

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVE:
The H-coils are a new development in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) research, allowing direct stimulation of deeper neuronal pathways than does standard TMS. This study assessed possible health risks, and some cognitive and emotional effects, of two H-coil versions designed to stimulate deep portions of the prefrontal cortex, using several stimulation frequencies.
METHODS:
Healthy volunteers (n=32) were randomly assigned to one of four groups: each of two H-coil designs (H1/H2), standard figure-8 coil, and sham-coil control. Subjects were tested in a pre-post design, during three increasing (single pulses, 10 Hz, and 20 Hz stimulation sessions, as well as 24-36 h after the last stimulation.
RESULTS:
The major finding of the present study is that stimulation with the novel H-coils was well tolerated, with no adverse physical or neurological outcomes. Computerized cognitive tests found no deterioration in cognitive functions, except for a transient short-term effect of the H1-coil on spatial recognition memory on the first day of rTMS (but not in the following treatment days). On the other hand, spatial working memory was transiently improved by the H2-coil treatment. Finally, the questionnaires showed no significant emotional or mood alterations, except for reports on 'detachment' experienced by subjects treated with the H1-coil.
CONCLUSIONS:
This study provides additional evidence for the feasibility and safety of the two H-coil designs (H1/H2).
SIGNIFICANCE:
The H-coils offer a safe new tool with potential for both research and clinical applications for psychiatric and neurological disorders associated with dysfunctions of deep brain regions.

Is dreaming merely a cognitive performance? Analysis of the content and narrative structure of children’s dreams
Publication year: 2012
URL:
http://www.cecog.eu/absbook_ducog2012.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Inspired mainly by the longitudinal studies of Foulkes the mainstream of developmental psychology considers dreaming a cognitive performance deriving it solely from children’s cognitive abilities. In contrast, the current neurocognitive approaches see the function of REM sleep and dreaming in the consolidation of
emotional memories and in affective regulation.
This study investigates the ontogeny of dreaming, evaluates the frequency, content and narrative structure of dreams together with the cognitive and affective development in children.
In our content analysis we followed the rules described by Foulkes, but the method of dream collection was fundamentally different: instead of interviews after awakening from sleep in the laboratory, over 6 weeks children would report their dreams at home to their pre-trained parents in the form of tape-recorded dream-diaries based on provided questionnaires.
The initial content analysis (n=12, age=4-8 years) revealed differences to earlier results: dreams are longer in every age group compared to the previous findings, selfrepresentation is more frequent (79%), movement (84%) and living emotions (43%) are common in the dream experience; furthermore the number of dream reports does not change significantly with age (one dream per week in all age groups).
The current study is a part of a bigger research project, which aims to widen our knowledge about this seldom investigated field of developmental studies and dream science - evaluating it in a new, emotional development-centered context and using different methodology.

In God we trust: Effects of spirituality and religion on economic decision making
Publication year: 2023

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Background
Spirituality and religion (S/R) are highly prevalent and relate to various aspects of mental health. However, S/R is multifaceted, and cognitive and behavioral mechanisms of S/R are unclear. Spiritual beliefs and attitudes, and regular practice of religious rituals, may facilitate general consistency of behavior and attenuate impulsive reactivity to loss and gains.
Methods
We utilized a sophisticated and complex economic decision-making paradigm – the Sequential Investment Task – to probe effects of S/R on behavioral adaptation to positive and negative outcomes (both real and fictive) within a diverse community-based sample (n = 242). S/R was assessed with a wide range of self-report measures.
Results
Collectively, facets of religion had significant effects on task variables, suggesting that religious involvement is associated with more consistency in decision making, and less behavioral change resulting from real gains and fictive losses, but not real losses. Conversely, spirituality was not significantly tied to behavior overall, though some facets (i.e., importance of spirituality and belief in God) predicted greater behavioral consistency.
Discussion
This study suggests that religion, but not spirituality, is associated with greater uniformity of behavioral responding, less reactivity to positive outcomes, and less reactivity to perceived losses, when making investment decisions.

Cognitive, psychological, and physiological effects of a web-based mindfulness intervention in older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: an open study
Publication year: 2024
URL:
https://doi.org/10.1186/s12877-024-04766-z
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Background
The development of effective strategies to maintain good mental health of older adults is a public health priority. Mindfulness-based interventions have the potential to improve psychological well-being and cognitive functions of older adults, but little is known about the effect of such interventions when delivered through internet. During the COVID-19 pandemic we evaluated short- and long-term cognitive, psychological, and physiological effects of a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) delivered via web-based videoconference in healthy older adults.
Methods
Fifty older adults participated in an 8-week MBI, which comprised structured 2-h weekly group sessions. A comprehensive evaluation encompassing cognitive (verbal memory, attention and processing speed, executive functions) and psychological assessments (depression and anxiety symptoms, mindfulness, worries, emotion regulation strategies, well-being, interoceptive awareness and sleep) was conducted. Additionally, electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded before and after the MBI and at the 6-month follow-up (T6). Data were analyzed using an intention-to-treat approach, using linear mixed models adjusted for age. The effect size for time was computed as omega squared.
Results
We observed significant improvements from pre-MBI to post-MBI and at the T6 across several measures. These improvements were notable in the areas of verbal memory (California Verbal Learning Test, p = .007), attention and executive functions (Trail Making Test A and BA, p < .050), interoceptive awareness (Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness, p = .0002 for self-regulation and p < .05 for noticing, body listening, and trusting dimensions), and rumination (Heidelberg Form for Emotion Regulation Strategies, p = .018). These changes were associated with low to medium effect size. Moreover, we observed significant changes in EEG patterns, with a decrease in alpha1 (p = .004) and an increase in alpha2 (p < .0001) from pre-MBI to T6. Notably, improvements in TMTBA and rumination were correlated with the decrease in alpha1 (p < .050), while improvements in TMTA were linked to the increase in alpha2 (p = .025).
Conclusions
The results of our study show that a web-based MBI in older adults leads to improvements in cognitive and psychological measures, with associated modulations in specific brain rhythms. While these findings are promising, further controlled studies are required to validate these preliminary results.
Trial registration
The trial has been registered with the United States National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health Registry of Clinical Trials under the code NCT05941143 on July 12, 2023.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Final report - Effect of mindfulness on EEG brain activity for cognitive and psychological well-being in the elderly
Publication year: 2023
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Background
As the worldwide population of older adults is rapidly increasing, effective strategies are needed to maintain cognitive and psychological well-being.
Aims
To evaluate if cognitive and psychological well-being and their neurophysiological correlates may be modulated by mindfulness training (MT) in healthy older adults.
Method
Seventy older adults took part in a standardized MT program consisting of 8 weekly group 2-hour sessions, delivered in-person (n=20) or via web-based videoconference (n=50). A comprehensive cognitive (verbal memory, attention and executive functions) and psychological (anxious and depressive symptoms, dispositional mindfulness, worries, emotion regulation strategies, wellbeing, interoceptive awareness, sleep) evaluation and EEG recording were collected at pre- and post-MT and at 6-month follow-up.
Results
n the online sample (n=50), we found a significant effect of time on verbal memory, attention switching and executive functions, interoceptive awareness, and rumination (p<.05). EEG alpha1 significantly decreased (p=.005) and alpha2 significantly increased (p<.0001) from pre-MT to post-MT and T6. Significant correlations between cognitive measures and EEG variables were found (p<.05). In the online and in-person sample (n=52) divided by presence (n=30) or absence (n=22) of subjective cognitive decline (SCD), older adults with SCD improved on cognitive and psychological measures, with a divergent effect on dispositional mindfulness and interoceptive awareness relative to no-SCD (p<.05).
Conclusions
Web-based MT improves cognitive and psychological measures in older adults by modulating neural activity in specific brain rhythms. Controlled studies are needed to confirm these results.
