Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
EEG spectral power and coherence were analyzed under waking baseline condition in 19 high (HH) and 12 low (LH) hypnotizable subjects. In HH subjects, the theta1 and theta2 spectral power was higher than in LH. The major new finding of this study is that coherence between distributed brain regions was sharply elevated in HH subjects within the theta and alpha frequency bands. In contrast, spectral power and coherence of beta2 and gamma1 bands were higher in LH subjects as compared to HH subjects. However, the long distance coherence between frontal and posterior areas within beta-gamma frequency ranges was higher in HH subjects. It might be supposed that HH subjects are engaged in imaginal mental activity whereas LH ones are mainly engaged in linguistic activity. The neurophysiological basis of the obtained EEG differences is discussed.

INTRODUCTION:
Human subjects show ultra weak photon emission (UPE) in complete darkness. Dark-adapted subjects in darkness respond to a color filter at a few cm from the head. The response is an immediate increase of UPE. The response is systemic; it can be measured at body locations different from the site of exposure. Increase of UPE is commonly seen in stress conditions. It is hypothesized that changes in UPE are associated with sympathetic activation. This study tests the hypothesis that fluctuations in UPE and EEG (alpha suppression) patterns are correlated.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
Simultaneous recording of EEG (parietal left and right in resting state) and UPE (right hand dorsum) was in sitting position. Frequency spectra were computed of every 5 s of EEG while recording. UPE was counted every 0.05 s from the right hand dorsum. Each experiment consists of 15-20 cycles according to the following protocol. After 3 min recording, the subject was exposed to the filter for 20 s, after which recording of UPE and EEG continued for an additional 3 min. This cycle was immediately followed by a next cycle(s) of 3 min pre-, 20s during- and 3 min post-filter exposure. Left and right brain alpha activity was calculated for 1 Hz bands in the 7-13Hz range. Laterality was calculated for every 5s. Photon count characteristics (mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis) were analyzed for each 5s epoch. Correlation between the photon and EEG parameters were computed both for the 3 min pre-exposure and 3 min postexposure periods, using these 5s epochs.
RESULTS:
Eleven experiments with 204 trials were analysed. Significant correlations have been observed. Photon count distribution parameters (e.g., mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis) were correlated with alpha intensity in several bands (7-8 Hz, 8-9 Hz, 9-10 Hz, 10-11 Hz). The same photon count parameters were also correlated with laterality in the 7-8 Hz and 10-11Hz bands. The correlations occur predominantly in the period preceding the filter exposure.
CONCLUSION:
Correlations between photon emission and brain wave activity suggest a degree of coupling between the spontaneous fluctuations in the photon field and the spontaneous fluctuations in alpha activity. Data also suggest that a stress event (i.e., exposure to filter) disturbs this coupling. This indicates that subtle effects may be observed only in systems with a high degree of coupling (coherence).

Are there distinctions at the neurophysiological level that correlate with voluntary and involuntary actions? Whereas the wide variety of involuntary behaviors (and here mostly the deviant or pathological ones will be considered) will necessarily be represented at some biophysical level in nervous system activity–for after all those cellular activity patterns manifest themselves as behaviors and thus there will be a multiplicity of them–there could be some general tendencies to be discerned amongst that assortment. Collecting observations derived from neurophysiological activity associated with several pathological conditions characterized by presenting will-less actions such as Parkinson's disease, seizures, alien hand syndrome and tics, it is proposed that a general neurophysiologic tendency of brain activity that correlates with involuntary actions is higher than normal synchrony in specific brain cell networks, depending upon the behavior in question. Wilful, considered normal behavior, depends on precise coordination of the collective activity in cell ensembles that may be lost, or diminished, when there are tendencies toward more than normal or aberrant synchronization of cellular activity. Hence, rapid fluctuations in synchrony is associated with normal actions and cognition while less variability in brain recordings particularly with regards to synchronization could be a signature of unconscious and deviant behaviors in general.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Chronic stress impairs cognitive function, namely on tasks that rely on the integrity of cortico-limbic networks. To unravel the functional impact of progressive stress in cortico-limbic networks we measured neural activity and spectral coherences between the ventral hippocampus (vHIP) and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in rats subjected to short term stress (STS) and chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). CUS exposure consistently disrupted the spectral coherence between both areas for a wide range of frequencies, whereas STS exposure failed to trigger such effect. The chronic stress-induced coherence decrease correlated inversely with the vHIP power spectrum, but not with the mPFC power spectrum, which supports the view that hippocampal dysfunction is the primary event after stress exposure. Importantly, we additionally show that the variations in vHIP-to-mPFC coherence and power spectrum in the vHIP correlated with stress-induced behavioral deficits in a spatial reference memory task. Altogether, these findings result in an innovative readout to measure, and follow, the functional events that underlie the stress-induced reference memory impairments.
