To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

Building on published and anecdotal accounts which suggested that experimenter-subject relationship was important to the outcome of parapsychology experiments, this project used Conversation Analysis to examine participants' discourse in recordings of mentation review phases of ganzfeld experiments conducted at the KPU in Edinburgh.
The research examined robust verbal practices in which one participant displayed a positive or affiliative stance towards the other. For example, linguistic studies of reported speech in other contexts have found that it is a method by which a current speaker can establish their affiliation to the person whose speech is being reported. In the data it was found that reported speech was used to accomplish various interactional functions: it prompted subjects to provide further information about an item; it marked transitions between different phases of the review; and it was a device through which experimenters could tacitly orchestrate clarification or correction by the subject. The analysis also offered a categorisation of subjects' responsiveness, or recipiency, and examined experimenters' verbal characteristics associated with the preferred high subject recipiency.
It was found that experimenter's use of acknowledge token (such as 'mm hm') to receipt subject comments were more likely to facilitate high or expanded recipiency. Experimenter responses such as 'okay' were associated with verbal practices in which the likelihood of subject expansion was minimised. The project also examined instances in which experimenters departed from their institutional role or task to offer encouraging or affiliative utterances. Analysis of these and other topics continues.

In this article we study how reported speech markers are used as procedural resources in a laboratory based parapsychology experiment to investigate forms of anomalous communication, such as extrasensory perception. In particular, we focus on how specific activities in a key part of the experiment are mediated by the use of 'you said' formulations which project that whatever is said next is a paraphrase or a verbatim report of what the recipient had said earlier. We identify two uses of reported speech markers. First, they are used in utterances that initiate some form of repair, such as correction or clarification. Second, they cluster in sequential locations that mark, after a temporary suspension, the resumption of key activities in the experiment. In this we hope to contribute to the study of the institutional properties of reported speech. We conclude by discussing the ways in which broader cultural understandings of the inferential force of 'you said' formulations inform their use in this institutional setting, and reflecting on the significance of these findings for parapsychological investigation of anomalous communication in this setting.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This paper reports findings from a conversation analytic study of experimenter-participant interaction in parapsychology experiments. It shows how properties of communication through which the routine business of the experiment is conducted may have an impact on the research participant's subsequent performance. In this, the study explores social psychological features of the psychology laboratory. In particular, it examines aspects of Orne's (1962) account of what he called the demand characteristics of the psychological experiment. The data come from a corpus of audio recordings of experimenter-participant interaction during experiments on extra-sensory perception. These kinds of experiments, and the phenomena they purport to study, are undoubtedly controversial; however, the paper argues that there are grounds for social psychologists to consider parapsychology experiments as a class (albeit distinctive) of psychology experiments, and, therefore, as sites in which general social psychological and communicative phenomena can be studied. The empirical sections of the paper examine interaction during part of the experimental procedure when the experimenter verbally reviews a record of the participant's imagery reported during an earlier part of the experiment. The analysis shows that the way in which the experimenter acknowledges the research participants' utterances may be significant for the trajectory of the experiment and explores how the participants' subsequent performance in the experiment may be influenced by interactionally generated contingencies.

In recent years there has been a change in attitudes among psychologists and social scientists towards ostensibly paranormal experiences in general, and parapsychological research in particular. Instead of seeking to endorse or debunk claims of paranormal experience, attention has shifted to the analysis of the broader psychological, social and cultural implications of reports of anomalous phenomena. This paper contributes to this trend by arguing for a discursive psychological study of interaction between experimenter and subject in parapsychology laboratory experiments. Parapsychological experiments rely on mundane interactional practices which invoke the relevance of, or make explicit reference to, psychological and parapsychological states. These laboratory interactions can be investigated by conversation-analytic-informed discursive psychology. Some preliminary observations on data from ganzfeld ESP experiments are offered to illustrate the range of empirical issues which may be explored. These concern the socially organized properties of reports of conscious imagery; the use of a psychological thesaurus as part of the experimenter’s work; and the management of affiliation in experimenter-subject interaction. These observations suggest that discursive psychological research can be undertaken despite the controversial status of evidence for extra-sensorimotor communication. The paper argues that the discursive psychological studies of interaction in parapsychological experiments can yield findings relevant to the concerns of both parapsychology and discursive psychology, and can contribute to methodological issues in the broader study of consciousness.

Conversation analysis (CA) is a formal, qualitative method for the analysis of naturally-occurring interaction. It has been applied to the investigation of the discourse of anomalous experiences, and in the analysis of experimenter-subject interaction in parapsychology experiments. This paper contributes to this latter line of research. A key feature of the CA method is to examine how a turn's design exhibits its producer's tacit understanding of the on-going interaction. This methodological step is illustrated by analysis of data from ganzfeld experiments conducted at the Koestler Parapsychology Unit at the University of Edinburgh. The analysis focuses on two different ways in which experimenters receipt subject communication in the mentation review phase of the experimental procedure. In the review, experimenters go over their record of the subject's prior mentation imagery. After introducing each instance of mentation imagery, the experimenters leave a short gaps before proceeding to introduce the next item in the review. This slot provides an opportunity for the subject to correct the experimenter's record of the mentation, if necessary, or to add further information about their imagery. Routinely, subjects pass on this opportunity to expand upon their prior mentation imagery. However, when they do provide further information about their imagery, this expansion turn is usually receipted by "okay" from the experimenter, who then moves on to the next mentation imagery. In some cases, though, expansion turns are receipted by "mm hm" or its variants. In such cases, it is observable that the subject provides further talk about the relevant imagery. However, in various ways, in this further talk the subject exhibits a much more circumspect or cautious stance toward their imagery; for example, there are expressions of doubt about the status of the imagery, or accounts which attribute the imagery to mundane aspects of the environment. It is argued that these doubt marked or circumspect expansion sequences are interactionally generated in that they emerge from the subject's interpretation of the significance of the experimenter's "mm hm" receipt of their prior talk. The paper concludes by offering some speculative observations on the possible consequences of the different interpretations subjects may draw from these two forms of experimenter receipt.

This paper introduces the substantive and methodological approach of conversation analysis (CA), a rigorous, qualitative method for the study of naturally occurring talk in interaction. It argues that CA can be used to analyze potentially significant linguistic practices during research in parapsychology laboratories. To establish the relevance of CA, three arguments are presented. First, it is observed that the work of a parapsychology laboratory relies on a largely unexamined set of interactional moments. Second, the paper discusses aspects of the methodology of CA, a key feature of which is the use of distinctive transcription techniques. Finally, the paper illustrates the empirical approach of conversation analysis by examining some properties of experimenter-subject interaction during mentation review periods; the data are from ganzfeld experiments conducted at the Koestler Parapsychology Unit during the 1990s. The paper concludes by discussing some methodological and substantive areas in which CA might be of use in parapsychological research.

Parapsychology is the scientific study of claims of anomalous communication, or anomalous cognition, and it is a predominantly experimental and laboratory-based discipline. In this article we examine transcripts of recordings from extra sensory perception (ESP) experiments as part of which participants were required to make introspective reports on their inner mental experiences. The data are recordings and transcripts of “ganzfeld” ESP experiments conducted at the Koestler Parapsychology Unit at the University of Edinburgh. Drawing from conversation analysis and discursive psychology, which seek to identify, among other things, recurrent and robust properties of describing as a social activity, we examine these reports to illuminate generic issues in the production of verbal introspective data, and make some particular remarks relevant to their role in this kind of parapsychological experiment.

History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The authors provide an introduction to the articles and commentaries which comprise the special issue on anomalous experience and qualitative research. It is argued that within psychology there have been two broad responses to reports of paranormal experiences: laboratory-based parapsychological studies and studies which seek to identify the determining factors that lead people to believe that they have experienced paranormal phenomena. However, recently an alternative perspective has developed in which the analytic goal is not to explain away or corroborate participants' claims or experiences but to understand in more detail their significance as psychological, social, and cultural events. The articles which comprise this special issue contribute to this development. They all begin from the assumption that anomalous experiences are fundamentally meaningful events, symbolically mediated through language and communication, which are inextricably enmeshed in the fabric of interpersonal actions in social settings, and reflect their broader historical and cultural context. What also unites these articles is that they show how the qualitative analysis of events or experiences can contribute to our understanding of fundamental psychological and social psychological processes.
