    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character

BIAL Foundation Archive
Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS; Spanier, 1976) is considered to be one of the best measures of marital quality. The goal of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the DAS. The sample was constituted of 207 participants (103 women and 104 men) who were married to or cohabiting with the partner for at least six months. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed a good fit of the multidimensional factor structure proposed originally. The alpha was .897 for the global
scale, and varied between .655 and .849 for the four sub-scales. Additional analyses (including of testretest reliability and the association of scores with various variables) provided further evidence for similar psychometric properties of the Portuguese
version of the DAS as compared to the original version. The results of the present study also suggest that the Satisfaction sub-scale (10 itens) can be used as a short-form of the original DAS when the aim is to evaluate marital adjustment in global terms.

Psychophysiological reactivity in couples during a marital interaction task

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The ability to regulate our own physiological arousal when dealing with the emotional expression of our partner is crucial for satisfactory and stable intimate relationships. In previous physiological studies of marital interactions, researchers have found greater levels of psychophysiological arousal for members of the couple in conflictual interactions in comparison with positive interactions. Past researchers have established that intense and prolonged autonomic and neuroendocrine arousal during marital conflict can have negative consequences for mental and physical health. In this study we examined the physiological reactivity, as measured by skin conductance level, heart rate and cortisol levels, from both partners during a couple's interaction task consisting of a structured conversation about positive and negative aspects of their relationship. Participants were thirty-two heterosexual couples (N?=?64) in a committed monogamous relationship with a minimum duration of one year. We found higher heart rate and cortisol levels during negative interaction condition when compared with the positive condition. Skin conductance was higher in the positive interaction condition, when compared with the negative interaction condition. In addition, we found a significant negative association between heart rate variability and autonomic arousal evoked by the interaction task. The implications of these findings for the effects of marital strain on health as well as for the design of risk-reducing interventions, namely biofeedback are discussed.

Revisiting physiological linkage in couples
Publication year: 2015

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The search for psychophysiological correlates of the social functioning often relies on the individual as the essential unit of observation. With this type of approach it is not always possible to capture specific patterns of responsivity to others' behaviors, especially between close relationship partners. However, this obstacle may be overcome by using a dyadic multivariate approach, which allows to explore the dynamic changes driven by relational processes at both individual and dyadic level (Butler, Gross & Barnard, 2014). Empirical research has documented evidence on the importance of the interplay of physiological responses in the quality of social life and long-term health. This issue is especially critical in marital research, considering findings from recent studies showing that the behavioral influence of each partner on the other occurs also through physiological linkage, which is defined as a coordinated oscillation of the physiological responses between partners (Butler & Randall, 2013; Saxbe & Repetti, 2010). In order to assess this mechanism more directly, we used psychophysiological measures, as measured by the cardiac and electrodermal activities, during a dyadic couple interaction task. In the current study, 30 couples cohabiting together
in a committed relationship, for at least one year, were recruited through a large online subject pool from the university and the general community. The interaction task consisted of a minimally structured conversation in the laboratory setting about positive and negative aspects of their relationship. This ecological laboratory-based interaction was designed to mimic the couples' daily experiences, which involve transactional emotional processes, or the reciprocal interaction of emotions, either negative or positive. The cardiac and electrodermal activities from both spouses were recorded simultaneously using a data
acquisition system coupled to two amplifiers for each physiological modality. For the purpose of assessing the change scores during the interaction task, a 2-minute minimally demanding baseline task was performed by both members of the dyad. After the task, self-report
