Cognitive disinhibition and psi: Exploring the filter theory of psi-awareness
Publication year: 2007

http://www.academia.edu/695144/Psi_and_cognitive_disinhibition_Exploring_the_filters_of_consciousness_hypothesis
Abstract/Results: INTRODUCTION
Filter theories of psi postulate that psi-mediated information operates as a ‘weak stimulus’ that is likelyto be filtered out of conscious awareness (e.g. Myers, 1903/2001; Thalbourne, Bartemucci, Delin, Fox, & Nofi, 1997), and that psi might more commonly function at a subliminal level, without representation inawareness (e.g. Roney-Dougal, 1986). This research brief presents the methodology of a study in which anexperimental paradigm, developed to examine the efficacy of hypothesised filtering mechanisms of consciousness, is adapted to include a psi component.Inhibitory processes are thought to play a role in selective attention, discarding behaviourally irrelevantinformation in order to reduce working memory load (Wuthrich & Bates, 2001). A stream of research hasfocused on ‘cognitive inhibition,’ through experimental paradigms such as latent inhibition (LI). LIassesses inhibitory processes in selective attention. In a typical LI experiment there are two conditions, where, during an initial task, participants are either: 1) repeatedly exposed to a particular stimulus (the pre-exposure [PE] condition); or 2) not exposed to this stimulus (the non-pre-exposure [NPE] condition). The stimulus is irrelevant to this initial task and serves no function. Thus, it is hypothesised that those inthe PE condition will inhibit its representation from awareness. In a subsequent task (the experimentaltask), this stimulus assumes relevant status; it must be attended to in order to solve a problem. Those in the NPE condition solve the problem faster; this is presumed to be because the stimulus has not been inhibited(e.g. Gray, Fernandez, Williams, Ruddle & Snowden, 2002).In the current study a standard visual LI protocol has been replicated, and two conditions added: 1) psi- pre-exposure (? PE), where a sender will attempt to transmit the stimulus telepathically during the initialtask; and 2) non-psi-pre-exposure (N ? PE). Thus, we assess whether psi-mediated information might beinhibited from awareness when it is not needed, thus affecting subsequent cognitive performance. There is some evidence to suggest that high schizotypy and creativity abolish the LI effect (Carson etal., 2003; Gray et al., 2002), from which it has been inferred that schizotypy and creativity have incommon less stringent filtering of mental elements into awareness. Creativity, schizotypy and belief in the paranormal are incorporated in the current study to address the idea that certain profiles will relate toincreased awareness of the (psi) stimulus.

Exploring the filter theory of psi-awareness: do we inhibit psi-mediated information when it is not needed?
Publication year: 2007

http://www.spr.ac.uk/main/page/conference-abstracts-2007
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Filter theories of psi postulate that psi-mediated information operates as a ‘weak stimulus’ that is likely to be filtered out of conscious awareness (e.g. Myers, 1903/2001; Thalbourne, Bartemucci, Delin, Fox, & Nofi, 1997), and that psi might more commonly function at a subliminal level, without representation in awareness (e.g. Roney-Dougal, 1986). As such, states of consciousness that reduce ‘cognitive noise’ (e.g. Honorton, 1977) and unstructured states with wide, diffuse attention (e.g. Braud, 2002) have been implicated in models of psi-awareness, augmenting faint impressions; as have characteristics associated with increased openness to weak stimuli, such as low perceptual-defence (Watt, 1994) and schizotypy (Simmonds, 2003). This paper presents the methodology of a study in which an experimental paradigm, developed to examine the efficacy of hypothesised filtering mechanisms of consciousness, is adapted to include a psi component.
Inhibitory processes are thought to play a role in selective attention (Milliken & Tipper, 1998), discarding behaviourally irrelevant information in order to reduce working memory load (Wuthrich & Bates, 2001). A stream of research has focused on ‘cognitive inhibition’, through experimental paradigms such as latent inhibition (LI). LI assesses inhibitory processes in selective attention. In a typical LI experiment there are two conditions, where, during a masking task, participants are either: 1) repeatedly exposed to a particular stimulus (the pre-exposure [PE] condition); or 2) not exposed to this stimulus (the non-pre-exposure [NPE] condition). The stimulus is irrelevant to this initial task and serves no function. Thus, it is hypothesised that those in the PE condition will inhibit its representation from awareness. In a subsequent task (the experimental task), this stimulus assumes relevant status; it must be attended to in order to solve a problem. Those in the NPE condition solve the problem faster; this is presumed to be because the stimulus has not been inhibited (e.g. Gray, Fernandez, Williams, Ruddle & Snowden, 2002).
The study that will be presented assesses whether psi-mediated information might be inhibited from awareness when it is not needed, thus affecting subsequent cognitive performance. A standard visual LI protocol has been replicated, and two conditions added: 1) psi-pre-exposure (?PE), where a sender will attempt to transmit the stimulus telepathically during the masking task; and 2) non-psi-pre-exposure (N?PE). Thus, we ask whether psi works in a similar manner to the unattended stimulus in the normal processes of attention.
There is some evidence to suggest that high schizotypy and creativity abolish the LI effect (Carson et al., 2003; Gray et al., 2002) – where pre-exposure to the stimulus (with irrelevant status) does not lead to impaired performance on the experimental task. It has thus been inferred that schizotypy and creativity have in common less stringent filtering of mental elements into awareness. Creativity and schizotypy are incorporated in the current study to address the idea that certain profiles will relate to increased awareness of the (psi) stimulus. Further, it is predicted that belief in and experience of ESP in daily life will be associated with increased awareness of the (psi) stimulus.
Study hypotheses
It is hypothesized that: 1) performance on the experimental task will be impaired in the PE condition compared to the NPE condition; 2) there will be a significant difference in performance on the experimental task between the ?PE and the N?PE conditions (direction is not predicted, as the effect of pre-exposure has been shown to be bi-directional in LI research where weak pre-exposure improves rather than impairs performance); creativity characterised by ‘intrapersonal awareness’ (Holt et al., 2004), the positive dimensions of schizotypy (Simmonds, 2003) and belief in the paranormal (Thalbourne & Delin, 1993) will: 3) correlate significantly and negatively with performance in the PE condition (i.e. with enhanced performance on the experimental task); and 4) correlate significantly with performance in the ?PE condition.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We conducted two trials of a free-response ESP test. The aim was to determine if two groups, ‘low’- and ‘high’-scorers on a measure of hypnotic susceptibility, would score differently on a psi-hitting task. We used the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility which assesses the hypnotisability of subjects when tested in groups. The sample (N = 101 psi-believing participants; 69 females and 32 males) was split into ‘High HS’ (n = 20) and ‘Low HS’ groups (n = 81) based on HS scores. There was a significant difference between the two groups on Hypnotic Susceptibility and psi scores (i.e., number of hits), t(99) = 2.31, p = .012. A second study was carried out. A number of papers have investigated the idea of rational versus intuitive thinking and how this might relate to paranormal beliefs. Those who possess both intuitive and rational thinking styles are more likely to report paranormal experiences and subjective paranormal ability than those who express either intuitive or rational thinking. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the differences between psychic claimants (N = 49) and non-psychic claimants (N = 45) on such personality factors as Global Constructive Thinking, Emotional Coping, Behavioural Coping, and Esoteric Thinking. The sample consisted of 94 participants, all of whom believed in psi. Participants completed the Constructive Thinking Inventory and the Anomalous Experiences Inventory. The psychic claimants group had significantly higher scores on 12 out of 23 factors/facets which could not all be explained by chance. Compared to non-psychic claimants, the psychic claimants tend to have more positive attitudes; their thinking is action-oriented; they are good behavioural copers; they think in ways that promote effective action; and they are more accepting of others. At the same time, they are more rigid in their thinking than non-psychic claimants.

Aura vision as a hallucinatory experience: Its relation to fantasy proneness, absorption, and other perceptual maladjustments
Publication year: 2010
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
The phenomenon of aura vision has a long tradition in the religious, occult, and psychical research literatures. Perceptual illusions, afterimages, and contrast effects have been offered as scientific explanations for aura reports. Among a sample of 586 undergraduates, it was predicted that those who reported an aura experience would score higher than nonexperiencers on the Betts Vividness of Imagery Scale (visual and tactile), Barrett’s Hallucinations Questionnaire (visual and tactile), the Creative Experiences Questionnaire (fantasy proneness), the Tellegen Absorption Scale, the Dissociative Experiences Scale, and the cognitive-perceptual subscale of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire. All the predictions were significantly confirmed except those concerning visual and tactile hallucinations. It was concluded that persons who “see” auras are likely to have a rich imaginal life.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
The search for 'psi-conducive' states of consciousness has a long history in parapsychology. Reviews of the literature show that there is much evidence to support the contention that hypnosis is a psi-conducive state. States of consciousness, induced through different techniques, have been studied, e.g. hypnosis and progressive muscle relaxation and the induction technique. Subjects who are in a relaxed, psi-conducive state are in a state of low arousal which may be accompanied by such a low motivation that they do not care about performing the psi task well.
METHOD:
In this research project, the participants –believers in the general possibility of psi– were recruited in the Instituto de Psicología Paranormal at Buenos Aires. Subjects were divided into two groups, hypnosis and no-hypnosis stimulation. Subjects all completed three personality questionnaires, such as the NEO-PI-R, Millon Index of Personality Styles Revised, The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, two imagery and creativity questionnaires (e.g. Betts’s Vividness of Imagery Scale) before any psi testing be conducted. Both researchers remain blind to the scores from the personality scales until the subjects had been tested and their test scores be checked and independently rechecked.
RESULTS:
The sample included 62 participants, both 40 females (71.4%) and 22 males (28.6%), their ages ranged from 19 to 77 years (Mean= 48.47; SD= 11.02). All subjects also completed the hypnosis susceptibility questionnaire. ESP tests (clairvoyance) was performed which it is being conducted under two counterbalanced conditions: (a) hypnosis and (b) relaxation stimulation. Two targets type (emotional vs. neutral) is being used as stimulus. Emotional targets were previously evaluated by all of the participants, which they will be given ratings for enjoyability, affinity, emotionality, and valence. Each subject, having completed the personality scales will outline the nature of the task to the subject and answer any questions about the procedure. Under hypnosis condition scored psi-hitting 31.2%. notably above chance expected; however. under no-hypnosis (“control”) condition we obtained 24.6%, up to date. These are interesting results which seems to suggest that hypnosis condition somehow optimizes psi-communication.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In this chapter, we review studies investigating the role of sleep in emotional functions. In particular, evidence has recently accumulated to show that brain regions involved in the processing of emotional and reward-related information are activated during sleep. We suggest that such activation of emotional and reward systems during sleep underlies the reprocessing and consolidation of memories with a high affective and motivational relevance for the organism. We also propose that these mechanisms occurring during sleep promote adapted cognitive and emotional responses in the waking state, including overnight performance improvement, creativity, and sexual functions. Activation across emotional-limbic circuits during sleep also appears to promote emotional maturation and the emergence of consciousness in the developing brain.

Sleep and dreaming are for important matters

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Recent studies in sleep and dreaming have described an activation of emotional and reward systems, as well as the processing of internal information during these states. Specifically, increased activity in the amygdala and across mesolimbic dopaminergic regions during REM sleep is likely to promote the consolidation of memory traces with high emotional/motivational value. Moreover, coordinated hippocampal-striatal replay during NREM sleep may contribute to the selective strengthening of memories for important events. In this review, we suggest that, via the activation of emotional/motivational circuits, sleep and dreaming may offer a neurobehavioral substrate for the offline reprocessing of emotions, associative learning, and exploratory behaviors, resulting in improved memory organization, waking emotion regulation, social skills, and creativity. Dysregulation of such motivational/emotional processes due to sleep disturbances (e.g., insomnia, sleep deprivation) would predispose to reward-related disorders, such as mood disorders, increased risk-taking and compulsive behaviors, and may have major health implications, especially in vulnerable populations.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Ninety-five participants (32 believers, 30 disbelievers and 33 neutral believers in the paranormal) participated in an experiment comprising one visual and one auditory block of trials. Each block included one ESP, two degraded stimuli and one random trial. Each trial included 8 screens or epochs of “random” noise. Participants entered a guess if they perceived a stimulus or changed their mind about stimulus identity, rated guesses for confidence and made notes during each trial. Believers and disbelievers did not differ in the number of guesses made, or in their ability to detect degraded stimuli. Believers displayed a trend toward making faster guesses for some conditions and significantly higher confidence and more misidentifications concerning guesses than disbelievers. Guesses, misidentifications and faster response latencies were generally more likely in the visual than auditory conditions. ESP performance was no different from chance. ESP performance did not differ between belief groups or sensory modalities.

Fantasy proneness correlates with the intensity of near-death experience
Publication year: 2018

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Little is known about the personality characteristics of those who have experienced a "Near-Death Experience" (NDE). One interesting candidate is fantasy proneness. We studied this trait in individuals who developed NDEs in the presence (i.e., classical NDEs) or absence (i.e., NDEs-like) of a life-threatening situation. We surveyed a total of 228 individuals. From those, 108 qualified as NDE experiencers (i.e., Greyson NDE scale total score =7): 51 had their NDEs in the context of a life-threatening situation; 57 had their NDEs not related to a life-threatening situation. From those who did not meet the criteria to be considered "experiencers," 20 had their NDE in the absence of a life-threatening situation; 50 had faced death but did not recall a NDE and finally, 50 were healthy people without a history of life threat and/or NDE. All participants completed a measure of NDE intensity (the Greyson NDE scale) and a measure of fantasy proneness (the Creative Experiences Questionnaire). People reporting NDEs-like scored higher on fantasy proneness than those reporting classical NDEs, individuals whose experiences did not meet the NDE criteria and matched controls. By contrast, individuals reporting classical NDEs did not show different engagement in fantasy as matched controls. The reported intensity of the experiences was positively correlated with engagement in fantasy. Our findings support the view that strong engagement in fantasy by individuals recalling NDEs-like might make these persons more likely to report such subjective experiences when exposed to suitable physiological and/or psychological conditions (e.g., meditation, syncope).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Prior research indicates that synesthesia may play a role in the etiology of ghost experiences
AIMS
A survey explored whether synesthetes differed from non synesthetes on ghost experiences, frequencies of differently appraised ghost experiences, senses and spatial locations of ghost experiences, psychometric predictors of ghost experiences (transliminality, boundary thinness, creativity, somatic focus, interoception and locus of control). Qualitative analysis of narratives using grounded theory. The psychomanteum explored synesthesia, geomagnetic field (GMF), electromagnetic field (emf), heart rate variability, and the output of a random number generator (RNG) in exceptional experiences (ExE).
METHOD
An online survey explored correlates of ghost experiences. A psychomanteum compared 15 synesthetes with 15 non synesthetes on ExE and their correlates.
RESULTS
Synesthetes reported more ghost experiences with a paranormal appraisal. Boundaries, creativity, interoception and somatic focus correlated with ghost experiences with a paranormal appraisal. Transliminality was the strongest independent predictor. The RNG output correlated negatively and significantly with the extent to which ExE were rated as taking up space. Post hoc analysis indicates that this effect was for synesthetes only. The GMF (nanoTesla) and local emf (milliGauss) influenced the levels of heart rate variability. GMF correlated with the extent to which experiences took up space.
CONCLUSIONS
Synesthesia, creativity, boundaries and awareness of the body play a role in ghost experiences. Results of the psychomanteum study are suggestive of interactions between subjective experience and the local and non-local environment, particularly among synesthetes.

Predicting response originality through brain activity: An analysis of changes in EEG alpha power during the generation of alternative ideas
Publication year: 2019
URL:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1053811919309760
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Growing neurophysiological evidence points to a role of alpha oscillations in divergent thinking (DT). In particular, studies have shown a consistent EEG alpha synchronization during performance on the Alternative Uses Task (AUT), a well-established DT task. However, there is a need for investigating the brain dynamics underlying the production of a sequence of multiple, alternative ideas at the AUT and their relationship with idea originality. In twenty young adults, we investigated changes in alpha power during performance on a structured version of the AUT, requiring to ideate four alternative uses for conventional objects in distinct and sequentially balanced time periods. Data analysis followed a three-step approach, including behaviour aspects, physiology aspects, and their mutual relationship. At the behavioural level, we observed a typical serial order effect during DT production, with an increase of originality associated with an increase in ideational time and a decrease in response percentage over the four responses. This pattern was paralleled by a shift from alpha desynchronization to alpha synchronization across production of the four alternative ideas. Remarkably, alpha power changes were able to explain response originality, with a differential role of alpha power over different sensor sites. In particular, alpha synchronization over frontal, central, and temporal sites was able to predict the generation of original ideas in the first phases of the DT process, whereas alpha synchronization over centro-parietal sites persistently predicted response originality during the entire DT production. Moreover, a bilateral hemispheric effect in frontal sites and a left-lateralized effect in central, temporal, and parietal sensor sites emerged as predictors of the increase in response originality. These findings highlight the temporal dynamics of DT production across the generation of alternative ideas and support a partially distinct functional role of specific cortical areas during DT.

Does latent inhibition underpin creativity, positive schizotypy and anomalous cognition?

Abstract/Results: This paper presents two experiments in which an experimental paradigm developed to examine the efficacy of filtering mechanisms of attention, Latent Inhibition (LI), was adapted to include a psi component. LI assesses the processing of irrelevant stimuli, thus we tested whether a psi-stimulus might be processed akin to the irrelevant stimulus. Because the processing of the irrelevant stimulus has been shown to be moderated by creativity and positive schizotypy, we hypothesized that these same variables would also moderate the processing of any psi effect. In Experiment 1, a significant LI effect was observed but no psi effect. However, non-linear cognition in the creative process (NLCC) (e.g., intuition and hypnagogia) was significantly associated with a psi-LI-like effect. In Experiment 2 there was a significant psi effect that seemed to operate under the same conditions as LI (being attenuated with a high attentional load). However, creativity and positive schizotypy did not moderate the strength of this psi-LI-like effect. The LI effect was significantly enhanced by NLCC and attenuated by originality.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT
Creative ideas are thought to result from flexible recombination of concepts from memory. A growing number of behavioural and neuroscientific studies provide evidence of a link between episodic memory and divergent thinking; however, little is known about the potential contributions of autobiographical memory to creative ideation. To provide a novel perspective on this issue, we assessed measures of divergent and convergent creative thinking in a cohort (n = 14) of rare individuals showing Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM). The HSAM cohort completed memory tasks in addition to a battery of creativity measures, including the Alternative Uses Task, Consequences Task and Remote Associates Task. We performed statistical analyses to establish whether there were any significant differences between HSAM and controls (n = 28) across these measures. Although HSAM participants were superior in the recall of autobiographical events compared to controls, we observed no overall difference between the groups in relation to the creativity measures. These findings suggest that the constructive episodic processes relevant to creative thinking are not enhanced in individuals with HSAM, perhaps because they are compulsively and narrowly focused on consolidation and retrieval of autobiographical events.

Abstract/Results: Abstract
Creativity has previously been linked with various attentional phenomena, including unfocused or broad attention. Although this has typically been interpreted through an executive functioning framework, such phenomena may also arise from atypical incentive salience processing. Across two studies, we examine this hypothesis both neurally and psychologically. First we examine the relationship between figural creativity and event-related potentials during an audio-visual oddball task, finding that rater creativity of drawings is associated with a diminished P300 response at midline electrodes, while abstractness and elaborateness of the drawings is associated with an altered distribution of the P300 over posterior electrodes. These findings support the notion that creativity may involve an atypical attribution of salience to prominent information. We further explore the incentive salience hypothesis by examining relationships between creativity and a psychological indicator of incentive salience captured by participants' ratings of enjoyment (liking) and their motivation to pursue (wanting) diverse real world rewards, as well as their positive spontaneous thoughts about those rewards. Here we find enhanced motivation to pursue activities as well as a reduced relationship between the overall tendency to enjoy rewards and the tendency to pursue them. Collectively, these findings indicate that creativity may be associated with atypical allocation of attentional and motivational resources to novel and rewarding information, potentially allowing more types of information access to attentional resources and motivating more diverse behaviors. We discuss the possibility that salience attribution in creatives may be less dependent on task-relevance or hedonic pleasure, and suggest that atypical salience attribution may represent a trait-like feature of creativity.

The role of alpha oscillations in free- and goal-directed semantic associations
Publication year: 2024
URL:
https://doi.org/10.1002/hbm.26770
Abstract/Results: Abstract:
Alpha oscillations are known to play a central role in several higher-order cognitive functions, especially selective attention, working memory, semantic memory, and creative thinking. Nonetheless, we still know very little about the role of alpha in the
generation of more remote semantic associations, which is key to creative and semantic cognition. Furthermore, it remains unclear how these oscillations are shaped by the intention to “be creative,” which is the case in most creativity tasks.
We aimed to address these gaps in two experiments. In Experiment 1, we compared alpha oscillatory activity (using a method which distinguishes genuine oscillatory activity from transient events) during the generation of free associations which were
more vs. less distant from a given concept. In Experiment 2, we replicated these findings and also compared alpha oscillatory activity when people were generating free associations versus associations with the instruction to be creative (i.e. goal-directed).
We found that alpha was consistently higher during the generation of more distant semantic associations, in both experiments. This effect was widespread, involving areas in both left and right hemispheres. Importantly, the instruction to be creative
seems to increase alpha phase synchronisation from left to right temporal brain areas, suggesting that intention to be creative changed the flux of information in the brain, likely reflecting an increase in top-down control of semantic search processes. We
conclude that goal-directed generation of remote associations relies on top-down mechanisms compared to when associations are freely generated.
