To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

Sensory cortices of individuals who are congenitally deprived of a sense can exhibit considerable plasticity and be recruited to process information from the senses that remain intact. Here, we explored whether the auditory cortex of congenitally deaf individuals represents visual field location of a stimulus-a dimension that is represented in early visual areas. We used functional MRI to measure neural activity in auditory and visual cortices of congenitally deaf and hearing humans while they observed stimuli typically used for mapping visual field preferences in visual cortex. We found that the location of a visual stimulus can be successfully decoded from the patterns of neural activity in auditory cortex of congenitally deaf but not hearing individuals. This is particularly true for locations within the horizontal plane and within peripheral vision. These data show that the representations stored within neuroplastically changed auditory cortex can align with dimensions that are typically represented in visual cortex.

ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
Our brains store memories of a vast number of past experiences. To draw effectively on these experiences we need to influence what we remember. This selective recollection requires strategic control that acts before memories are retrieved.
AIMS
We used EEG to investigate how and when people recover desired information. Measuring time-resolved neural responses during recollection allowed us to quantify pre-retrieval selection and its modulation by internal goals and external cues.
METHOD
In a first study we examined univariate event-related potentials (ERPs) in two preregistered experiments (Ns = 28). We then applied multivariate decoding analysis to investigate the selective reinstatement of goal-relevant neural patterns during recollection.
Objects were studied as pictures or auditory names. One source was designated as targets in each memory test, and cue overlap varied by probing memory with visual names (Experiment 1) or line drawings (Experiment 2).
RESULTS
The left parietal ERP indexing recollection was selective when test cues overlapped more with the targeted source. In contrast, reinstatement of neural patterns from the study phase was selective regardless of cue overlap. Decoding of EEG data prior to retrieval cues also revealed preliminary evidence (Experiment 1) of goal representations hypothesized to initiate selective recollection.
CONCLUSIONS
The data show that selection can act before recollection if there is sufficient overlap between retrieval cues and targeted memory traces. The ERP and decoding results point to selection at both early and late stages of the retrieval cascade. Internal goals may modulate initial reinstatement of remembered information, while external cues modify later processing.

Background
Perception is derived from the combination of priors and sensorial input. While priors are broadly understood to reflect experience developed over one’s lifetime, the role of perceptual expertise at the individual level has seldom been directly tested.
Aims
We explored the extent to which predictive processing differs as a function of expertise across different domains, namely categorization, individuation (i.e. identity processing), and low-level processing (perceiving a face across different viewpoints). This was done at the individual level by taking advantage of varying individual expertise with faces.
Method
Metrics associated with Expectations were analysed in reaction time data (behavioural tasks) and EEG recordings (neural tasks). Participants also completed independent measures of face and object expertise (CFMT+, CCMT).
Results
Work package 1 reveals that early perception is shaped by face expectation, with decoding of expectation over posterior areas, occurring from 100ms. This decoding of objects of expertise (faces) had a direct link with behavioral facilitation effects of face expectation associated with face expertise. In work package 2, we show that effects of expectation go beyond simple categorization, into higher level processing, namely, identity processing, finding a significant relationship between face identity expectation and individual face expertise.
Conclusions
We highlight the role of expertise on forming priors, providing support for the often-disregarded contribution of individual level variability. Future work will build on these findings to probe the role of expertise within the predictive coding framework in individuals displaying typical and atypical use of predictive cues.
