Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

From 1913 to 1937 a St. Louis homemaker, Pearl Cur-ran, seemed to channel conversations and literary works from a seventeenth-century Englishwoman named Patience Worth. The communications were at first produced through the use of a Ouija board and then later through automatic speech. “Patience” displayed knowledge, sophistication, and creative capacities apparently radically different from those of Mrs. Curran. In addition to volumes of engaging and often acerbic conversation, Patience produced several novels, plays, thousands of poems, witty epigrams and pithy aphorisms, many of them of exceptional merit. Patience also displayed unprecedented improvisational, mnemonic, and creative capacities. She could improvise poems on any subject proposed to her, sometimes performing astonishing literary stunts, and her works were produced without need of revision or correction. Moreover some of her works were written in a novel archaic Anglo-Saxon dialect, and even her more modern works contained a peculiar preponderance of Anglo-Saxon root words. Because scrupulous investigation has found no person corresponding to the Patience Worth persona, it seems likely that Patience represents a set of latent creative talents unleashed dissociatively in Pearl. This achievement resembles similar accomplishments of savants and prodigies, and the case raises intriguing issues about the limits of and prerequisites for human creativity.

Do you believe in ghosts? Chances are you're either too willing, or not willing enough, to believe that personal consciousness survives after bodily death. Some underestimate the evidence for life after death, not realizing how impressive the most convincing cases are. Others overestimate it, rejecting alternative explanations too readily. In fact, several non-survivalist explanations-hidden or latent linguistic or artistic talents, extreme memory, even psychic abilities--are as interesting as the hypothesis of survival, and may be more plausible than their critics realize. Immortal Remains takes a fresh look at some of the most puzzling cases suggesting life after death, and considers how to tell evidence for an afterlife from evidence for exotic things (including psychic things) done by the living. Author Stephen E. Braude, who has done extensive research in parapsychology and dissociation, explores previously ignored issues about dissociation, creativity, linguistic skills, and the nature and limits of human abilities. He concludes that we have some reason, finally, for believing in life after death.

The present study aimed to explore the relationship between a number of psychological variables and a reported sense of presence in immersive virtual reality (IVR). It was hypothesised that participants' scores on measures of absorption, dissociation, and external locus of control would be positively and significantly correlated with a measure of their sense of presence in IVR. A total of 64 people took part. Significant correlations were found between presence and dissociation (r=0.403, p<0.01), and presence and locus of control (r=0.268, p<0.05). However, the correlation between presence and absorption was not significant (r=-0.037, p=0.386). The findings reported here suggest a complex interrelationship of psychological variables in relation to presence in IVR that warrants further research.

Previous research has shown that people reporting contact with aliens, known as "experiencers", appear to have a different psychological profile compared to control participants. They show higher levels of dissociativity, absorption, paranormal belief and experience, and possibly fantasy proneness. They also appear to show greater susceptibility to false memories as assessed using the Deese/Roediger-McDermott technique. The present study reports an attempt to replicate these previous findings as well as assessing tendency to hallucinate and self-reported incidence of sleep paralysis in a sample of 19 UK-based experiencers and a control sample matched on age and gender. Experiencers were found to show higher levels of dissociativity, absorption, paranormal belief, paranormal experience, self-reported psychic ability, fantasy proneness, tendency to hallucinate, and self-reported incidence of sleep paralysis. No significant differences were found between the groups in terms of susceptibility to false memories. Implications of the results are discussed and suggestions are made for future avenues of research.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Growing public interest in the phenomenon of mediumship, particularly among bereaved persons, suggests the need for renewed controlled studies of mediums, both to provide potential clients with criteria for judging mediums and to help researchers learn whether they can produce specific and accurate information to which they have had no normal access and, if so, under what conditions. Two research studies were conducted in which mediums provided readings about particular deceased persons to a proxy sitter. The real sitters then blindly rated the reading that was intended for them along with several control readings. In the first study, the results were not significant. In the second, much larger study the results were highly significant (z = -3.89, p < 0.0001, 2-tailed). The authors discuss 2 possible weaknesses of the successful study and indicate some directions for further research.

Two samples were studied, 214 students of psychology at a university in Lima (74% women, 26% men) and 184 upper secondary students in Pucallpa, Peruvian region of Ucayali (42% women, 58% men). Results show that both students from Lima and from Pucallpa that had had aparitional experiences were more prone to experiment unusual pseudo-hallucinatory perceptions and more prone to skizotypy in comparison to those who reported not having experiences of the sort. In addition, students that had had aparitional experiences showehigher levels in the scales of disociation, absortion and proness to phantasy compared to students with no aparitional experiences.

The purpose of the present study is to test whether hallucinatory experiences respond to the dimensionality principle and to detect potential differences between a group of “hallucinators” and a group of “non-hallucinators” with regard to personality traits in 214 Peruvian undergraduates students (non-clinical sample) and 30 outpatients (clinical sample). Among a sample of undergraduates, it was predicted that those who reported a number of anomalous perceptual experiences would score higher than nonexperiencers on the hallucination prone (auditive, visual, hipnagogic/hipnopompic and tactile), fantasy proneness, absorption, dissociation, and the cognitive-perceptual factor of the schizotypal questionnaire. All the predictions were significantly confirmed except those concerning interpersonal and disorganized schizotypy.

La experiencia de déjŕ vu puede ser definida como cualquier impresión subjetiva errónea de familiaridad acerca de una experiencia presente con pasado indefinido. En efecto, individuos que tienen experiencias de déjŕ vu tienen un nivel más elevado de actividad imaginativa/fantasiosa o propensión a la fantasía. Cuando se compara a estos individuos con quienes no la experimentan, estas personas tienen mayor capacidad de absorción psicológica. Este estudio incluyó 560 estudiantes de psicología de ambos sexos, 406 mujeres y 154 varones. Los resultados indican que la esquizotipia cognitivo-perceptual, desrealización/ despersonalización, sinestesia, y tendencia a la fantasía son factores que parecen cumplir un rol en la ocurrencia de la experiencia déjŕ vu en comparación con individuos que no tienen la experiencia. Además, las experiencias déjŕ vu podrían operar en un continuo en cuyo extremo están los estados disociativos normales y en el otro, estados patológicos como la amnesia disociativa y la despersonalización.

An out-of-body experience or OBE is one in which the “self” or center of awareness seems to the person who experiences it to occupy temporarily a position that is spatially remote from his or her body. The experience seems to be quite widespread in the
general population. Some studies show a close relation relationship between the incidence of OBEs and its psychological correlates,
especially personality variables, absorption, and dissociative experiences. Six specific hypotheses are tested: Students who report out-of-body experiences have a higher capacity for (1) Visual and Tactile hallucination, (2) Cognitive-perceptual, Disorganized and Interpersonal schizotypy, (3) Dissociation, Absorption, Fantasy proneness, than students that do not report such experiences. A total of 648 undergraduate students population (Argentine sample) and 214 undergraduate students population (Peruvian sample), completed a number of scales. Data for subjects who experienced OBE were compared with data for those who did not. The results showed higher levels of cognitive-perceptual schizotypy, absorption, dissociation, fantasy and hallucination proneness, and visual imagery in OBErs than in non-OBErs which confirms previous studies. This study suggests the dissociational model of OBE, although the term hallucination has pejorative overtones in spite of the widespread occurrence of anomalous perceptual experiences in the normal population. Some subjects report beneficial effects from OBEs in an adaptive way.

Recent studies on hallucinatory experiences suggest that a range of hallucinatory experiences may occur outside the clinical practice, and do not lead to psychosis. In fact, the severity of mental disturbances seems to follow a continuum where one may regard psychosis in a human being as a distribution of symptoms, which constitute a terrein much more apt for psychological
than psychopathological study. Here, we formulate a hypothesis where on the continuum hallucinatory experiences may occur, in a non-clinical population. Probably, dissociative experiences and other related constructs, schizotypy, and dream experiences, constitute a common domain. The objective of the present study was to determine whether high scores on proneness to unusual perceptual experiences among healthy individuals are directly and positively correlated with high scores on intensity of imagery, schizotypical tendencies, absorption, dissociation, and fantasy proneness. The sample included university students (N= 655) of both sexes, 161 males and 494 females. (Average age = 25.57). The students completed six scales, five of which referred to perceptual experiences and one measure of personality risk indications, the Schizotypical Personality Questionnaire (SPQ). The results supported the idea that there is a correlation between having hallucinatory experiences and schizotypical personality in the general population. The results indicated that the Cognitiveperceptual factor was the best discriminator for the modality visual hallucination [F (1/149) = 17.83; p < .001, one-tailed], auditory [F (2/148) = 23.82; p <.001, one-tailed] and tactil [F (1/149) = 11.73; p = .001, one-tailed] between hallucinators and non-hallucinators. However, although the levels of schizotypy were high, they are not necessarily pathological; actually, these kind of experiences in their nature are completely different from those in pathological disturbances and they are not associated with any loss of contact with reality.

In an out-of-body experience (OBE), the “self”, or center of awareness, seems to temporarily occupy a position spatially remote from one’s body. In support of previous studies, undergraduate students reporting OBEs (N = 132) showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual schizotypy, dissociation, visual and kinetic hallucination proneness, and visual imagery than did non-OBEs (N = 516). The results support a dissociation model of OBEs. Some persons reported beneficial adaptive effects from their OBEs. Despite the widespread occurrence of anomalous perceptual experiences, including OBEs, in the general population, the term hallucination still has pejorative overtones. Such findings suggest that OBEs may be related to dissociation and cognitive-perceptual schizotypy. When taken in conjunction with other surveys of the general population, this study confirms that psychic experiences are a common occurrence in non-clinical populations, and that, although they are correlated with dissociation, they are not necessarily associated with pathology.

In this paper, we investigate whether the personality trait of Absorption is a predisposing factor for HG/HP hallucinatory experience. Our participants, six hundred and fifty-six undergraduate students, 76% females and 24% males (age range 17-57), completed four scales, assessing absorption (r = .48, p < .001, 2-tailed), Cognitive-perceptual schizotypy and schizotypy proneness (r = .44, p < .001, 2-tailed), dissociation (r = .46, p < .001, 2-tailed), and Fantasy proneness (r = .42, p < .001, 2-tailed), subjective
experiences along the sleep-wakefulness continuum. Our findings are indicative of a common, pseudohallucinatory experiential base, suggesting that absorption can indeed serve as the predisposing factor for hallucinatory experience. In our discussion, we look at the implications of this finding for applied cognitive psychology, focusing on the study of false memories and reality monitoring.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
An out-of-body experience or OBE is one in which the ?self? or center of awareness seems to the experient to occupy temporarily a position that is spatially remote from his or her body. A total of 648 undergraduate students population included 76% females and 24% males, and who completed a number of scales. Data for experients of OBE were compared with data for those who did not (experients N= 132 vs. non-experients N= 516). The results showed a higher level of cognitive-perceptual schizotypy, absorption, dissociation, fantasy and hallucination proneness, and visual imagery in OBErs than in non-OBErs. This study suggest that the dissociational model of OBE. Anomalous perceptual experiences and some subjects report beneficial effects from OBEs in an adaptive way.

Numerous studies have found that normal, healthy individuals may experience hallucinations, which reveal that a substantial number of nonclinical participants (i.e., people who have not been clinically referred or have never received a psychiatric or neurological diagnosis) report having typical hallucinatory experiences. In contrast, an extrasensory experience is one in which it appears that the experient's mind has acquired information directly, that is, seemingly without either the mediation of the recognized human senses or the processes of logical inference. The extrasensory experience pertains to appearances and not necessarily to reality, whereas the "extrasensory" in extrasensory perception refers to the nature of a hypothesized paranormal reality. Research on predisposition to extrasensorial experiences has evaluated differences between nonexperients and experients. The similarity between symptoms of schizotypal personality disorder and characteristics of ESP experiences is marked. These experiences do not occur in a vacuum but are closely interwoven with many other psychological processes. A total of 648 undergraduate psychology students at Faculty of Psychology of the UAI from Argentina, 494 (76%) females and 154 (24%) males, ranging in age from 17 to 57 years (M = 25.11, SD = 7.23), who completed six scales, Hallucination Experiences Scale; the Schizotypical Personality Questionnaire, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire; the Dissociation Experiences Scale ; the Tellegen Absorption Scale; and the Creative Experiences Questionnaire. The present study examined the differences between persons with and without Precognitive dreams (N Yes= 46%) and Extrasensorial experiences (N Yes= 45%) on different cognitive and psychological measures. The findings suggest that especially cognitive-perceptual aspects of schizotypy (both experiences z= 4.68; p < .001, one-tailed) are essential features of persons who had Precognitive dreams and Extrasensory Experiences; also suggesting that the dissociational model of extrasensorial experiences, which assumed that under lying dissociative proceses such as absorption and fantasy proneness are associated with ESP Experiences and Precognitive dreams. The cognitive-perceptual aspects of schizotypy, dissociation, and absorption seem to be present in the personal predisposition for experiencing an ESP Experiences. A possible theoretical model that seems to emerge from the present results is that of a “happy schizotype”. Positive schizotypy, reflecting hallucinations and altered perceptual experiences, has been related to subjective anomalous and para normal experiences and beliefs. It is tentatively concluded that the const ellation of interrelated factors which make up the construct of the “fantasy prone personality” provide a psychological predisposition for the extrasensorial experiences experience.

Title:
Psychological correlates of aura vision: Psychic experiences, dissociation, absorption, and synaesthesia-like experiences

ABSTRACT:
Five survey studies, three conducted from 1995 to 1997 and two more in 2007 and 2008, are reported in which we hypothesised that individuals who claimed to be "aura viewers" would report a higher frequency of other seemingly psychic, mystical and lucid dream experiences and a higher number of discrete psychic experiences than "non-aura viewers." For Studies 2 through 5, it was also hypothesised that aura viewers would obtain a similar relationship with synaesthesia-like experiences and with measures of dissociation (using the Dissociative Experiences Scale), absorption (using Tellegen's Absorption Scale), and depersonalisation (using the Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale). The studies also differed in terms of the language of administration (either Spanish or English) and study populations (from special interest groups to college students to members of the general public). In all five studies, the main hypotheses were confirmed with the exception of lucid dreams, a significant difference between the groups being found only in Studies 3 and 5. In Studies 2 through 5, the predicted relationship of aura vision to synaesthesia and personality variables was confirmed. All five studies suggest that aura vision experiences relate to an overall pattern of claims of psychic and mystical experiences. The consistency of the results was surprising, given the differences in sample selection, language of administration, and study location.

INTRODUCTION:
Although there are some questionnaire studies that have explored the relationship between parapsychological experiences and dissociation, there are few studies involving depersonalization experiences. Purpose: We conducted a survey to determine if there was a relationship between parapsychological and depersonalization experiences
PARTICIPANTS:
The study included 256 residents of Charlottesville, Virginia. 62.5% were female and 37.5% were male. Their mean age was 49.29.
METHOD:
Participants were selected in terms of the proportion of residents in the different postal codes of the city. These persons received questionnaires via the mail. Questionnaire: The questionnaire had items about demographic variables, parapsychological experiences (waking and dream ESP, apparitions, out-of-body experiences, and auras), and dreams (disturbing, lucid, and dream recall frequency), and the Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale (CDS).
RESULTS:
Those participants that reported having parapsychological experiences had higher CDS scores that those that did not have those experiences. An Index of Parapsychological Experiences formed by the number of experiences each person had was significantly and positively correlated with the CDS.
DISCUSSION:
The results show significant and positive relations between parapsychological and depersonalization experiences. This does not necessarily indicate pathology. There are individuals that have depersonalization experiences without having a psychiatric diagnosis.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The goal of this project was to examine whether there are discrete subtypes of highly suggestible individuals and to explore the relevance of these subtypes for the occurrence and expression of anomalous perceptual experiences. We conducted a series of studies to test predictions derived from typological models that assert that highly suggestible individuals are comprised of dissociative and imagery/fantasy subtypes who experience hypnosis and hypnotic suggestions through different mechanisms. These subtypes are also expected to report differential patterns of anomalous perceptual experiences.
Our studies provide clear, but qualified, support for the typological models and illustrate the importance of dissociation and hypnotic suggestibility for our understanding of anomalous experiences. Three studies yielded complementary evidence for a dissociative highly suggestible subtype that experienced greater spontaneous alterations in awareness and poorer cognitive control during hypnosis, and greater involuntariness during hypnotic responding and a second subtype that exhibited milder alterations in consciousness and marginally superior cognitive control during hypnosis, and strong baseline imagery. Our fourth study found that the two subtypes differed from low suggestible individuals, but not one another, in self-reported state dissociation and functional connectivity, as measured by EEG, during hypnosis. In a final study, we found that the dissociative subtype reported a greater amount and diversity of anomalous perceptual experiences. The results cumulatively provide support for proposals that there are distinct subtypes of highly suggestible individuals but also point to the importance of similarities in this population.
