Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Nightmares are intense, emotionally negative mental experiences that usually occur during late-night sleep and result in abrupt awakenings. Questionnaire-based studies have shown that nightmares are related to impaired sleep quality; however, the polysomnographic profile of nightmare subjects has been only scarcely investigated. We investigated the sleep architecture of 17 individuals with frequent nightmares and 23 control subjects based on polysomnographic recordings of a second night spent in the laboratory after an adaptation night. Nightmare subjects in comparison with control subjects were characterized by impaired sleep architecture, as reflected by reduced sleep efficiency, increased wakefulness, a reduced amount of slow wave sleep, and increased nocturnal awakenings, especially from Stage 2 sleep. While these differences were independent of the effects of waking psychopathology, nightmare subjects also exhibited longer durations of REM sleep that was mediated by heightened negative affect. Our results support that nightmares are related to altered sleep architecture, showing impaired sleep continuity and emotion-related increase in REM propensity.

STUDY OBJECTIVES:
Nightmares are disturbing mental experiences during sleep that usually result in abrupt awakenings. Frequent nightmares are associated with poor subjective sleep quality, and recent polysomnographic data suggest that nightmare sufferers exhibit impaired sleep continuity during nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Because disrupted sleep might be related to abnormal arousal processes, the goal of this study was to examine polysomnographic arousal-related activities in a group of nightmare sufferers and a healthy control group.
DESIGN:
Sleep microstructure analysis was carried out by scoring the cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) in NREM sleep and the arousal index in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep on the second night of the polysomnographic examination.
SETTING:
Hospital-based sleep research laboratory.
PARTICIPANTS:
There were 17 in the nightmare (NMs) group and 23 in the healthy control (CTLs) group.
INTERVENTIONS:
N/A.
MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS:
The NMs group exhibited reduced amounts of CAP A1 subtype and increased CAP A2 and A3 subtypes, as well as longer duration of CAP A phases in comparison with CTLs. Moreover, these differences remained significant after controlling for the confounding factors of anxious and depressive symptoms. The absolute number and frequency of REM arousals did not differ significantly between the two groups.
CONCLUSIONS:
The results of our study indicate that NREM sleep microstructure is altered during nonsymptomatic nights of nightmares. Disrupted sleep in the NMs group seems to be related to abnormal arousal processes, specifically an imbalance in sleep-promoting and arousing mechanisms during sleep.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Nightmare disorder is a prevalent parasomnia characterized by vivid and highly unpleasant dream experiences during night time sleep. The neural background of disturbed dreaming was proposed to be associated with impaired prefrontal and fronto-limbic functioning during REM sleep. We hypothesized that the impaired prefrontal and fronto-limbic functioning in subjects with frequent nightmares would be reflected at the behavioral level during waking tasks as well. 35–35 Subjects with frequent nightmares and matched controls participated in Study 1, involving an Emotional Go/NoGo, an Emotional Stroop task, and a Verbal Fluency task. Nightmare subjects exhibited longer reaction times in the Emotional Go/NoGo and Emotional Stroop tasks. Moreover, they committed more perseveration errors and showed less fluent word generation in the Verbal Fluency task. Nightmare subjects showed an overall slowing irrespective of the valence of the stimuli. While the effects of sleep quality and waking anxiety were associated to these deficits in some cases, these factors could not solely explain the difference between the two groups. In Study 2, 17 subjects with frequent nightmares and 18 controls were compared by a Color-word and an Emotional, block design Stroop task in order to avoid the slow effects of emotional interference potentially caused by previous items. Nightmare subjects were characterized by an overall slowing in the Emotional Stroop task, irrespective of the valence of the stimuli. In the Color-word Stroop task, nightmare subjects were not significantly slower in comparison with controls. Our results suggest that individuals with frequent nightmares are impaired in executive tasks involving the suppression of task-irrelevant semantic representations.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Nightmare disorder characterised by recurrent vivid, dysphoric dreams charged with negative emotions is one of the most common sleep problems. While there are two studies about the sleep architecture of nightmare sufferers (NS), as far as we know, the sleep EEG characteristics of them have not been investigated yet. Psychological (Beck Depression and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) and two-night polysomnographic testing were conducted on 21 university students (10 NS, 11 control) without any prior history of mental or chronic somatic disease. EEG spectra were obtained by using Fast-Fourier Transformation on the second night recordings for REM and NREM separately. We examined the group differences by ANCOVA controlling for the BDI and STAI score. In the nightmare group higher NREM theta (4,25-7,5 Hz) and high sigma (12,75-15 Hz) activities were found mainly at the centroparietal region and the frontal area, respectively. The frontal high sigma activity was correlated significantly with poor sleep assessed by the Groningen Sleep Quality Scale. No
significant differences in REM spectra have been observed. The results suggest that NS differ from controls more in NREM than in REM sleep. The covert REM sleep phenomena might explain the higher theta activity in NS.

Inspired mainly by the longitudinal studies of Foulkes the mainstream of developmental psychology considers dreaming a cognitive performance deriving it solely from children’s cognitive abilities. In contrast, the current neurocognitive approaches see the function of REM sleep and dreaming in the consolidation of
emotional memories and in affective regulation.
This study investigates the ontogeny of dreaming, evaluates the frequency, content and narrative structure of dreams together with the cognitive and affective development in children.
In our content analysis we followed the rules described by Foulkes, but the method of dream collection was fundamentally different: instead of interviews after awakening from sleep in the laboratory, over 6 weeks children would report their dreams at home to their pre-trained parents in the form of tape-recorded dream-diaries based on provided questionnaires.
The initial content analysis (n=12, age=4-8 years) revealed differences to earlier results: dreams are longer in every age group compared to the previous findings, selfrepresentation is more frequent (79%), movement (84%) and living emotions (43%) are common in the dream experience; furthermore the number of dream reports does not change significantly with age (one dream per week in all age groups).
The current study is a part of a bigger research project, which aims to widen our knowledge about this seldom investigated field of developmental studies and dream science - evaluating it in a new, emotional development-centered context and using different methodology.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We aimed to characterize sleep and to test the frontal dysfunction hypothesis of nightmares, as well as to bridge the relationship between the ontogeny of frontal-executive and emotion regulation functions with age-related peculiarities of dreams and nightmares. Nightmare sufferers (NS) were characterized by performance decreases in several executive tasks (Emotional Go/NoGo, Emotional Stroop, Verbal Fluency). Alterations in the sleep architecture (decreases: sleep efficiency, slow wave sleep; increases: wakefulness, arousals, REM sleep), microstructure (increases in A2-microarousals of the cyclic alternating pattern), and qEEG (increased REM sleep 10–14 Hz power and synchronization) were paralleled by a more pronounced first-night effect of NS. Children are more accomplished dreamers with dream narratives closer to adult dream reports than authors of previous laboratory findings described. 4–8 years old children were characterized by a positive correlation of dream report length with slow wave sleep and with performance in the Emotional Stroop test. Negative correlation between the developmental level of executive functioning and dream recall frequency was also established. Our results suggest that NS are characterized by impairments in executive tasks involving the suppression of task-irrelevant semantic representations. Moreover, nightmare-related alterations in sleep architecture and microstructure are characterized by wake-like intrusions disturbing the neurocognitive function of sleep, as well as by emotion-related increases in REM propensity. Children’s dreams should be collected by novel methods, involving their parents. Children’s dreams depend on the maturation of emotion regulation and executive functions.

In this chapter, we review studies investigating the role of sleep in emotional functions. In particular, evidence has recently accumulated to show that brain regions involved in the processing of emotional and reward-related information are activated during sleep. We suggest that such activation of emotional and reward systems during sleep underlies the reprocessing and consolidation of memories with a high affective and motivational relevance for the organism. We also propose that these mechanisms occurring during sleep promote adapted cognitive and emotional responses in the waking state, including overnight performance improvement, creativity, and sexual functions. Activation across emotional-limbic circuits during sleep also appears to promote emotional maturation and the emergence of consciousness in the developing brain.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

Recent studies in sleep and dreaming have described an activation of emotional and reward systems, as well as the processing of internal information during these states. Specifically, increased activity in the amygdala and across mesolimbic dopaminergic regions during REM sleep is likely to promote the consolidation of memory traces with high emotional/motivational value. Moreover, coordinated hippocampal-striatal replay during NREM sleep may contribute to the selective strengthening of memories for important events. In this review, we suggest that, via the activation of emotional/motivational circuits, sleep and dreaming may offer a neurobehavioral substrate for the offline reprocessing of emotions, associative learning, and exploratory behaviors, resulting in improved memory organization, waking emotion regulation, social skills, and creativity. Dysregulation of such motivational/emotional processes due to sleep disturbances (e.g., insomnia, sleep deprivation) would predispose to reward-related disorders, such as mood disorders, increased risk-taking and compulsive behaviors, and may have major health implications, especially in vulnerable populations.

OBJECTIVES
We previously suggested that abnormal sleep behaviors, as found in parasomnias, may relate to an increased activity of the dopaminergic-reward system during sleep. Because nightmares and sleepwalking predominate during REM and NREM sleep respectively, here we tested whether exploratory excitability, a waking personality trait reflecting high activity within the mesolimbic dopaminergic system, is associated with changes in REM and NREM sleep in these two sleep disorders.
METHODS
24 unmedicated patients with parasomnia (12 with idiopathic nightmares, 12 sleepwalkers) were studied. Each patient spent one night of sleep monitored by polysomnography. The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) was administered to all patients and healthy controls from the Geneva population (n = 293).
RESULTS
Sleepwalkers were more anxious than patients with idiopathic nightmares (Spielberger Trait anxiety/STAI-T), but the patient groups did not differ on any personality dimension as estimated by the TCI. Compared to controls, all parasomnia patients scored higher on the Novelty Seeking (NS) TCI scale and in particular on the exploratory excitability/curiosity (NS1) subscale, and lower on the Self-directedness (SD) TCI scale, suggesting a general increase in reward sensitivity and impulsivity. Moreover, exploratory excitability (NS1) correlated with the severity of parasomnia, and time spent in REM sleep in patients with nightmares.
CONCLUSIONS
These results support the hypothesis that reward networks are activated during human sleep. By showing that patients with parasomnia share common waking personality traits associated to reward-related brain functions, these findings may inspire targeted therapeutic strategies.

BACKGROUND
Sleep is beneficial for human memory, but in addition to cementing memory for the past, the sleeping brain may process past experiences in order to help us prepare for the future.
AIM OF THE STUDY
The current project tested the hypotheses that learning experiences with particular relevance to the future are 1) preferentially consolidated during post-training sleep and 2) preferentially incorporated into dream content.
METHOD
Participants trained on two learning tasks, and were tested on their memory following either a night of sleep or a day of wakefulness. To test the impact of “future relevance” on dreaming and memory consolidation: 1) Immediately after learning, future relevance of the learning tasks was experimentally manipulated by informing some participants that they would later be tested on what they have learned. 2) During a morning interview, participants rated the degree to which “future projection” was more generally present in their dreams and waking thoughts.
RESULTS
Manipulating the future relevance of the learning tasks significantly enhanced memory at delayed test, across both wake and sleep intervals. Test expectation did not significantly affect the incorporation of the learning tasks into dreaming. However, the morning interview data demonstrated that overall, a full 30% of dream reports were rated as stemming from an impending future occurrence.
CONCLUSIONS
These findings support our hypothesis that future events are a strong contributor to dream content in all sleep stages. At the same time, contrary to our hypotheses, the future relevance of a learning task enhanced its consolidation during wakefulness, as well as during sleep.

Exploration-insight from REM Dreams, NREM dreams and daydreams using the Ullman dream group method

We have shown high levels of personal insight following a one hour session during which a dream is considered at length (Blagrove et al., 2010; Edwards et al., Frontiers in Psychology, 2013), using the Ullman dream appreciation technique (Ullman, 1996). Also, considering recent dream reports elicits significantly higher personal insight than does the control condition of considering a recent waking life event (Edwards et al., 2015). However, following Noreika et al. (2010), a daydream, collected in the sleep lab, may be a more closely matched control condition for a dream report: we use that comparison text for the study reported here. We recruited 31 participants, aged 18 – 30, in good health, who recall at least 3 dreams per week at home. Each participant spent 1 night in the sleep lab. There a daydream (DD) was collected after wiring up and prior to sleeping, and then a Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep dream and a non-REM stage 2 (N2) dream will be collected, the order of awakenings for the latter two sleep stages was counterbalanced. Each of the participants’ three transcripts were then considered in separate Ullman group sessions during the following week. The length of time of each session, and the length of time spent on each stage and substage of the Ullman method was calculated so as to ensure that each of the 3 conditions do not differ on these variables. At the end of each discussion participants completed the 13 item Gains from Dream Interpretation questionnaire (Heaton et al., 1998), with (day) dream substituted for dream so that the same questionnaire could be used for all three reports. The questionnaire has an Exploration-Insight subscale, assessing engagement, and insight about the dream and about waking life, from the session. Items are rated on a 1 – 9 scale, anchored as strongly disagree to strongly agree. Results: From the metaanalysis in Edwards et al. (2013), Exploration-Insight from the work of Hill of mean = 7.40. Edwards et al. (2015) had mean for dreams = 7.82 (0.84), and for control Event consideration = 7.21 (1.13). In the current study, mean for Day Dreams = 7.13 (0.99), for N2= 7.76 (0.85), and for REM dreams = 7.49 (1.01). On mixed model analysis difference between the three conditions has p=.05. Difference between the three conditions for personal insight was not significant. The Exploration-Insight difference between dreams and daydreams was mainly due to differences on GDI items 2, 12 and 13, which address learning about the dream. The lack of difference between dreams and daydreams in elicitation of personal insight may be due to the frequent incidence of references to waking life concerns in the daydreams; about 75% of all daydreams referred to current concerns of the participant.

This study investigates the time course of incorporation of waking life experiences into daydreams. Thirty-one participants kept a diary for 10 days, reporting major daily activities (MDAs), personally significant events (PSEs) and major concerns (MCs). They were then cued for daydream, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and N2 dream reports in the sleep laboratory. There was a higher incorporation into daydreams of MCs from the previous two days (day-residue effect), but no day-residue effect for MDAs or PSEs, supporting a function for daydreams of processing current concerns. A day-residue effect for PSEs and the delayed incorporation of PSEs from 5 to 7 days before the dream (the dream-lag effect) have previously been found for REM dreams. Delayed incorporation was not found in this study for daydreams. Daydreams might thus differ in function from REM sleep dreams. However, the REM dream-lag effect was not replicated here, possibly due to design differences from previous studies.

Throughout history there have been reports and claims that consideration of dreams can produce personal realizations and insight. We assessed Exploration-Insight scores associated with discussing Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) dreams in connection with recent waking life experiences. Thirty-one participants were cued in the sleep laboratory for a daydream report and then awakened from REM and N2 sleep for dream reports. Participants subsequently discussed each of their dream and daydream reports for 30-40 minutes with two experimenters, following the structured Ullman (1996) dream group discussion procedure. Participants assessed the benefit of discussing the reports by completing the Gains from (Day)Dream Interpretation (G(D)DI) questionnaire. We found no difference in G(D)DI scores between discussing REM and N2 dream reports, and no difference between dream and daydream discussions in engagement and thoroughness of exploring the reports. However, discussing dream reports produced higher scores on the G(D)DI Exploration-Insight subscale compared with discussing daydream reports. Significant differences were evident in items reflecting the learning of what the report means in terms of waking life issues. Frontal theta prior to waking from N2 was significantly associated with Exploration-Insight score obtained after N2 dream discussion, but this relationship was not found for REM dreams. The findings of high ratings of Exploration-Insight after discussing dreams were evident even though participants did not select the dream, unlike what can occur for home recorded dreams, and even though discussion was brief. We suggest that insight might be produced by embodied and metaphorical thinking in dreams.

Brain and sleep maturation covary across different stages of life. At the same time, dream generation and dream recall are intrinsically dependent on the development of neural systems. The aim of this paper is to review the existing studies about dreaming in infancy, adulthood, and the elderly stage of life, assessing whether dream mentation may reflect changes of the underlying cerebral activity and cognitive processes. It should be mentioned that some evidence from childhood investigations, albeit still weak and contrasting, revealed a certain correlation between cognitive skills and specific features of dream reports. In this respect, infantile amnesia, confabulatory reports, dream-reality discerning, and limitation in language production and emotional comprehension should be considered as important confounding factors. Differently, growing evidence in adults suggests that the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the encoding and retrieval of episodic memories may remain the same across different states of consciousness. More directly, some studies on adults point to shared neural mechanisms between waking cognition and corresponding dream features. A general decline in the dream recall frequency is commonly reported in the elderly, and it is explained in terms of a diminished interest in dreaming and in its emotional salience. Although empirical evidence is not yet available, an alternative hypothesis associates this reduction to an age-related cognitive decline. The state of the art of the existing knowledge is partially due to the variety of methods used to investigate dream experience. Very few studies in elderly and no investigations in childhood have been performed to understand whether dream recall is related to specific electrophysiological pattern at different ages. Most of all, the lack of longitudinal psychophysiological studies seems to be the main issue. As a main message, we suggest that future longitudinal studies should collect dream reports upon awakening from different sleep states and include neurobiological measures with cognitive performances.

Dream experience (DE) represents a fascinating condition linked to emotional processes and the human inner world. Although the overlap between REM sleep and dreaming has been overcome, several studies point out that emotional and perceptually vivid contents are more frequent when reported upon awakenings from this sleep stage. Actually, it is well-known that REM sleep plays a pivotal role in the processing of salient and emotional waking-life experiences, strongly contributing to the emotional memory consolidation. In this vein, we highlighted that, to some extent, neuroimaging studies showed that the processes that regulate dreaming and emotional salience in sleep mentation share similar neural substrates of those controlling emotions during wakefulness. Furthermore, the research on EEG correlates of the presence/absence of DE and the results on EEG pattern related to the incorporated memories converged to assign a crucial role of REM theta oscillations in emotional re-processing. In particular, the theta activity is involved in memory processes during REM sleep as well as during the waking state, in line with the continuity hypothesis. Also, the gamma activity seems to be related to emotional processes and dream recall as well as to lucid dreams. Interestingly, similar EEG correlates of DE have been found in clinical samples when nightmares or dreams occur. Research on clinical samples revealed that promoting the rehearsal of frightening contents aimed to change them is a promising method to treat nightmares, and that lucid dreams are associated with an attenuation of nightmares. In this view, DE can defuse emotional traumatic memories when the emotional regulation and the fear extinction mechanisms are compromised by traumatic and frightening events. Finally, dreams could represent a sort of simulation of reality, providing the possibility to create a new scenario with emotional mastery elements to cope with dysphoric items included in nightmares. In addition, it could be hypothesized that the insertion of bizarre items besides traumatic memories might be functional to “impoverish” the negative charge of the experiences.

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND
Neural correlates of dream recall (DR) in elderly people are still largely unknown. Previous studies in older adults found a general decrease in DR and with the notable exception of Chellappa et al. (2009) no investigations have been carried out on EEG correlates of DR in aging.
AIM
Our study aimed to investigate whether specific EEG patterns during sleep in elderly predict a subsequent DR.
Method: 40 healthy older and 40 young adults were recorded with polysomnography: 21 older subjects were awakened from REM sleep and 19 older subjects from stage 2 NREM sleep; 20 young subjects were awakened from REM sleep and 20 young subjects from stage 2. DRs were collected upon morning awakening from both stages. EEG power spectra of the total sleep and of the last 5 min were calculated by Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The algorithm to detect oscillatory activity was applied on the last 5 min of sleep.
RESULTS
The two-way ANOVAs Recall X Age performed on the EEG power bands showed no main effect of Recall neither significant interaction for REM sleep as well as NREM sleep. Only a significant main effect of Age was observed both for total sleep and the last 5 min, during REM and NREM sleep. The analysis of oscillatory activity revealed that frontal theta oscillations during the last 5 min of REM sleep are related to DR, without any age-effect.
CONCLUSIONS
Our result replicated the previous evidence in young subjects and it is completely new for older individuals, showing that the theta oscillations play a pivotal role in the retrieval of dreaming also in this population. The findings are in line with the Continuity Hypothesis between waking and sleep mental functioning from a neurobiological viewpoint.

Several findings underlined that the electrophysiological (EEG) background of the last segment of sleep before awakenings may predict the presence/absence of dream recall (DR) in young subjects. However, little is known about the EEG correlates of DR in elderly people. Only an investigation found differences between recall and non-recall conditions during NREM sleep EEG in older adults, while—surprisingly—no EEG predictor of DR was found for what concerns REM sleep. Considering REM sleep as a privileged scenario to produce mental sleep activity related to cognitive processes, our study aimed to investigate whether specific EEG topography and frequency changes during REM sleep in elderly people may predict a subsequent recall of mental sleep activity. Twenty-one healthy older volunteers (mean age 69.2 ± 6.07 SD) and 20 young adults (mean age 23.4 ± 2.76 SD) were recorded for one night from 19 scalp derivations. Dreams were collected upon morning awakenings from REM sleep. EEG signals of the last 5 min were analyzed by the Better OSCillation algorithm to detect the peaks of oscillatory activity in both groups. Statistical comparisons revealed that older as well as young individuals recall their dream experience when the last segment of REM sleep is characterized by frontal theta oscillations. No Recall (Recall vs. Non-Recall) × Age (Young vs. Older) interaction was found. This result replicated the previous evidence in healthy young subjects, as shown in within- and between-subjects design. The findings are completely original for older individuals, demonstrating that theta oscillations are crucial for the retrieval of dreaming also in this population. Furthermore, our results did not confirm a greater presence of the theta activity in healthy aging. Conversely, we found a greater amount of rhythmic theta and alpha activity in young than older participants. It is worth noting that the theta oscillations detected are related to cognitive functioning. We emphasize the notion that the oscillatory theta activity should be distinguished from the non-rhythmic theta activity identified in relation to other phenomena such as (a) sleepiness and hypoarousal conditions during the waking state and (b) cortical slowing, considered as an EEG alteration in clinical samples.

Converging evidence suggests that dreaming is influenced by the consolidation of memory during sleep. Following encoding, recently formed memory traces are gradually stabilized and reorganized into a more permanent form of long-term storage. Sleep provides an optimal neurophysiological state to facilitate this process, allowing memory networks to be repeatedly reactivated in the absence of new sensory input. The process of memory reactivation and consolidation in the sleeping brain appears to influence conscious experience during sleep, contributing to dream content recalled on awakening. This article outlines several lines of evidence in support of this hypothesis, and responds to some common objections.

The study of dreams represents a crucial intersection between philosophical, psychological, neuroscientific, and clinical interests. Importantly, one of the main sources of insight into dreaming activity are the (oral or written) reports provided by dreamers upon awakening from their sleep. Classically, two main types of information are commonly extracted from dream reports: structural and semantic, content-related information. Extracted structural information is typically limited to the simple count of words or sentences in a report. Instead, content analysis usually relies on quantitative scores assigned by two or more (blind) human operators through the use of predefined coding systems. Within this review, we will show that methods borrowed from the field of linguistic analysis, such as graph analysis, dictionary-based content analysis, and distributional semantics approaches, could be used to complement and, in many cases, replace classical measures and scales for the quantitative structural and semantic assessment of dream reports. Importantly, these methods allow the direct (operator-independent) extraction of quantitative information from language data, hence enabling a fully objective and reproducible analysis of conscious experiences occurring during human sleep. Most importantly, these approaches can be partially or fully automatized and may thus be easily applied to the analysis of large datasets.
