The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

INTRODUCCIÓN:
La percepción y reconocimiento de caras requiere el acceso y recuperación de múltiples tipos de información de la memoria a largo plazo. Los correlatos neurofisiológicos de estos procesos son utilizados para analizar el procesamiento de información puramente visual y el procesamiento de información de naturaleza verbal-semántica asociada a las caras (la profesión y el nombre propio).
OBJETIVOS:
Mediante un diseño intrasujeto se compararon las respuestas cerebrales relativas al procesamiento de las representaciones visuales y semánticas de las caras con las relativas a otros objetos visuales y a palabras comunes, a fin de analizar el patrón de actividad cerebral durante el procesamiento de múltiples dominios de información. Pacientes/Sujetos y métodos. Estudiantes universitarios fueron familiarizados durante tres días consecutivos con caras, unas con y otras sin información verbal-semántica asociada. Posteriormente se registraron los potenciales evocados en seis tareas paradigmáticas del potencial evocado N400, diferentes en cuanto al dominio de información comprometido: visual facial pura, visual facial semántica, transdominio facial-profesión, profesión-nombre, objetos y palabras.
RESULTADOS:
Las respuestas observadas en estas tareas diferían en el patrón de activación neural, destacándose ante las caras un predominio de activación en la región temporal posterior derecha, mientras que las tareas ante objetos y palabras comunes conllevaron un patrón de activación localizado en regiones más anteriores. La actividad ante profesiones-nombres tuvo una distribución similar a la obtenida ante los estímulos faciales.
CONCLUSIÓN:
Los patrones de activación neural subyacentes al procesamiento de caras ponen en evidencia mecanismos “top-down” que actúan con relativa independencia de la naturaleza del estímulo.

While viewing ambiguous figures, such as the Necker cube, the available perceptual interpretations alternate with one another. The role of higher level mechanisms in such reversals remains unclear. We tested whether perceptual reversals of discontinuously presented Necker cube pairs depend on working memory resources by manipulating cognitive load while recording event-related potentials (ERPs). The ERPs showed early enhancements of negativity, which were obtained in response to the first cube approximately 500 ms before perceived reversals. We found that working memory load influenced reversal-related brain responses in response to the second cube over occipital areas at the 150–300 ms post-stimulus and over central areas at P3 time window (300–500 ms), suggesting that it modulates intermediate visual processes. Interestingly, reversal rates remained unchanged by the working memory load. We propose that perceptual reversals in discontinuous presentation of ambiguous stimuli are governed by an early (well preceding pending reversals) mechanism, while the effects of load on the reversal related ERPs may reflect general top-down influences on visual processing, possibly mediated by the prefrontal cortex.

Towards a profile of the hypnotic state: Continuing the search for a state marker

ABSTRACT:
It is widely disputed whether or not hypnosis, as distinct from responses to specific hypnotic suggestions, constitutes a discrete change in the operating state of the mind-brain system. If hypnotic responses require the on-set of such a background state, characteristic differences in the organization of neuronal activity should be visible between hypnotic and non-hypnotic conditions. This study sought to delineate a neuronal state ‘marker’ of hypnosis, thereby aiming to extend recent EEG findings of topographically specific increases in theta band functional connectivity and decreases in beta1 band connectivity in high compared to lows susceptible subjects following a hypnotic induction (Jamieson & Burgess, 2014). Specifically, this study extends the findings from sensor space (electrodes) to source space (cortical voxels). For this, resting EEG with eyes closed was recorded before, during and after hypnosis in 8 low susceptible and 11 high susceptible participants. Spectral band power analysis was conducted on the data, yielding, as expected, no significant results. Current source density estimations and connectivity analyses were done using the Key Institute eLORETA software. Cortical source activity did not show any significant hypnosis-related differences. However, as expected, hypnosis-related increases in functional connectivity in the theta band were found within nodes of the executive control network, in the salience network and in the default mode network. Moreover, also as expected, hypnosis-related decreases in beta1 band functional connectivity was found, specifically within nodes of the dorsal attention network and the executive control network. There were also two unexpected hypnosis-related increases in beta1 connectivity within nodes of the dorsal attention network and the salience network. These results indicate that reported changes in the theta and beta1 band functional connectivity in hypnosis are linked with a reorganization within the operations of the major networks regulating the flow of conscious experience, thereby supporting an altered state account of the hypnotic condition

New TMS-compatible EEG systems allow a direct investigation of the stimulation effects through the analysis of TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs). We investigated the effects of 1-Hz rTMS over the primary motor cortex (M1) of 15 healthy volunteers on TEP evoked by single pulse TMS over the same area. A second experiment in which rTMS was delivered over the primary visual cortex (V1) of 15 healthy volunteers was conducted to examine the spatial specificity of the effects. Single-pulse TMS evoked four main components: P30, N45, P60 and N100. M1-rTMS resulted in a significant decrease of MEP amplitude and in a significant increase of P60 and N100 amplitude. There was no effect after V1-rTMS. 1-Hz rTMS appears to increase the amount of inhibition following a TMS pulse, as demonstrated by the higher N100 and P60, which are thought to originate from GABAb-mediated inhibitory post-synaptic potentials. Our results confirm the reliability of the TMS-evoked N100 as a marker of cortical inhibition and provide insight into the neuromodulatory effects of 1-Hz rTMS. The present finding could be of relevance for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes.

BACKGROUND:
Little is known about how continuously changing emotional expressions are perceived, but it has been hypothesized that specific characteristics of emotional processing can be profitably explored within the framework of the non-linear dynamic systems theory. Recent studies based on such framework report perceptive "jumps" when continua of morphed facial expressions of emotion are presented. Specifically, emotions displayed in the middle of the continua seem to be more frequently decoded accordingly to the initial emotion, being consistent with a Hysteresis effect.
AIM:
In this study we further explore the non-linear properties of emotional processing and examine its EEG correlates.
METHOD:
We developed six continua of 11 frames each, of morphed expressions between pairs of emotions (anger, fear, sadness, happiness). During an EEG recording session, 55 healthy participants observed these continua, from emotion X to Y, Y to X and in random order, and were asked to identify the emotion being presented in each frame.
RESULTS:
Behavioral data revealed a remanence effect, with participants still perceiving the initial emotion beyond the mid-point of the continua, resulting in perceptual bimodality of the morphed expressions that are in the vicinity of the turning point between emotional categories. Different N170 mean amplitudes were found for mid-point frames of the continua Anger-Sadness and Sadness-Happiness, while for Fear-Sadness such difference was found for the LPP of the frame-related brain potentials.
CONCLUSIONS:
Results suggest a generalized hysteresis effect in the processing of facial expressions of emotion, and the same expression seems to induce different brain responses, depending on preceding stimuli.

When a voluntary action causes a sensory outcome, actions and their subsequent effects are perceived as being closer together in time, this effect being called intentional binding. Since studies on perceived time are highly dependent on subjective reports, an avenue to gain more reliable subjective reports regarding the precise moment of a temporal event is to work with experienced meditators. It has been shown in many studies that experienced meditators are able to keep attention more consistently on a task and they have increased attentional control and report more accurately their body sensations. In this study, we performed an intentional binding paradigm with twenty experienced meditators and compared the results with matched controls. Moreover, the pre-supplementary area (SMA) is regarded as key structure for voluntary movement and contributing to the sense of agency. For example, it has been shown that disrupting neural activity in the SMA leads to less intentional binding. Therefore, brain dynamic (EEG) was recorded and a single-trial analysis technique of the task was performed to estimate whether intentional binding is correlated with spontaneous slow cortical potentials (SCP). We observed that self-initiated movements following positive and negative potential shifts of SCPs in meditators, which are related to SMA activation, have different effects on intentional binding, especially the error regarding timing of sensory outcome rises. The difference between groups in timing accuracy and its correlate of brain dynamics will be discussed in detail.

This study investigated EEG correlates of social interaction at distance between twenty-five pairs of participants who were not connected by any traditional channels of communication.
Each session involved the application of 128 stimulations separated by intervals of random duration ranging from 4 to 6 seconds. One of the pair received a one-second stimulation from a light signal produced by an arrangement of red LEDs, and a simultaneous 500 Hz sinusoidal audio signal of the same length. The other member of the pair sat in an isolated sound-proof room, such that any sensory interaction between the pair was impossible.
An analysis of the Event-Related Potentials associated with sensory stimulation using traditional averaging methods showed a distinct peak at approximately 300 ms, but only in the EEG activity of subjects who were directly stimulated. However, when a new algorithm was applied to the EEG activity based on the correlation between signals from all active electrodes, a weak but robust response was also detected in the EEG activity of the passive member of the pair, particularly within 9 – 10 Hz in the Alpha range. Using the Bootstrap method and the Monte Carlo emulation, this signal was found to be statistically significant.

Blind source separation (BSS) based artifact rejection systems have been extensively studied in the electroencephalogram (EEG) literature. Although there have been advances in the development of techniques capable of dissociating neural and
artifactual activity, these are still not perfect. As a result, a compromise between reduction of noise and leakage of neural activity has to be found. Here, we propose a new methodology to enhance the performance of existing BSS systems: Localized Component Filtering (LCF). In essence, LCF searches the temporal evolution of the extracted components for artifactual instants. This information is then used to mix the original and the processed (cleaned) components. We show that LCF can improve the performance of artifact rejection systems and is effective at reducing leakage of neural activity.

Specific EEG/ERP responses to dynamic facial expressions in virtual reality environments

Visual event-related potentials of facial expressions (FEs) have been studied using usually static stimuli after a nonspecific black screen as a baseline. However, when studying social events, the ecology of the environment and stimuli can be a bias. Virtual reality provides a possible approach to improve ecology while keeping stimulus control.
We propose a new approach to study responses to FEs. A human avatar in a virtual environment (a plaza) performs the six universal FEs along the time. The setup consisted of a 3D projection system coupled with a precision-position tracker. Subjects (N=6, mean age=25.6y) wore a 32-channel EEG cap together with 3D glasses and two infrared emitters for position tracking. The environment adapted in real time to subjects’ position, giving the feeling of immersion.
Each animation was composed by the instantaneous morphing of the FE, which is maintained for one second before the ’unmorphing’ to the neutral expression, which takes another second. Inter-trial interval was set to three seconds, keeping the neutral facial expression as baseline for one second before the morphing of any facial expression.
For the occipito-temporal region, we found a right asymmetrical negativity [150-350]ms after stimulusonset.Timefrequency analysis showed a significant difference in the beta frequency band (20-25Hz) around 350ms in the temporal lobe for the processing of the different facial expressions.
This result suggests an important role played by the temporal lobe in discriminating facial expressions. Furthermore, this study provides a proof-of-concept of the possibility of using a complex virtual reality setup coupled with an EEG system for the study of dynamic and ecological social stimuli.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
TMS-EEG represent one of the most promising methods in the investigation of the brain dynamics. However, during EEG, the discharge of TMS may generate a decay artifact that can last for tens of milliseconds. Such artifact represents a problem for the analysis of the TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs). So far, two main strategies of correction have been proposed involving the use of a linear detrend or independent component analysis (ICA). However, none of these solutions may be considered optimal: firstly, because in most of the cases the decay artifact shows a non-linear trend; secondly, because the ICA correction (1) might be influenced by individual researcher’s choices and (2) might cause the removal of physiological responses. Our aim is to verify the feasibility of a new adaptive detrend by comparing it with the ICA correction. Thirty-six healthy volunteers were stimulated with 50 TMS pulses over the left M1. The peak-to-peak amplitude and the morphology of the TEPs were compared among three conditions: RAW (no correction of the decay artifact was applied); ICA (the decay components were extracted and removed by ICA); ALG (the decay artifact was corrected through the use of an adaptive algorithm). To assess whether the artifact correction significantly affected also the physiological responses to TMS, we examined the differences in the -100 +400 ms time window after the TMS pulse, across the three conditions, by means of a non-parametric, cluster-based, permutation statistical test. Then, we compared the peak-to-peak TEPs amplitude within the detected time windows. The grand-averaged EEG response revealed 5 main peaks: P30, N45, P60, N100 and P180. Significant differences (i.e. Monte Carlo p-values < 0.05) among the three conditions were detected in a cluster nearby the TMS coil, and specifically over FC1 (all the components); CP1 (P30/N45 and N45/P60) and FC2 (N45/P60 and P60/N100). Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a higher peak-to-peak amplitude in 5 of the 8 TEPs after ICA correction, compared to the RAW and ALG conditions. Our results showed that the ICA correction significantly affected the amplitude and the morphology of most of the analyzed TEPs. On the other hand, when our algorithm was used, the amplitude and the morphology of the peaks did not differ from the original signal (i.e. RAW condition). The present results showed that our adaptive detrend is a reliable solution for the correction of the TMS-evoked decay artefact, especially considering that, contrary to ICA, (1) it is not dependent from the number of recording channels, (2) it does not affect the physiological responses and (3) it is completely independent from the experimenter’s choices.

ABSTRACT:
The Ganzfeld is a method of perceptual deprivation, involving a reduced patterning of stimulation; participants may experience altered states of consciousness. We look at both phenomenology and electrophysiology (EEG) of our participants immersed in Whole-Body Perceptual Deprivation (WBPD), with two goals to investigate: (1) a shift in state of consciousness and sense of self; (2) the induction of synesthesia. The participants first completed some questionnaires and then a time-production (TP) task. An eyes-closed EEG baseline recording was obtained. The white-illuminated WBPD chamber was then closed, and an eyes-closed recording (WBPD-1) allowed us to test for the immediate effect of WBPD. This was followed by red and indigo light, each presented for 5 minutes, after which a short report of subjective experience was obtained. The participants thus underwent 10 minutes of eyes-open WBPD, with two sounds introduced to facilitate the induction of synesthesia. Then a third eyes-closed EEG (WBPD-2), followed by a short report of subjective experience, and a second TP task were done, followed by an extensive interview. Our participants reported experiences of an unusual character. The differential effect of the colored environments on some of them is quite familiar; a focus on bodily sensations, coupled with a feeling of immersion, is also well known. There are wide individual differences in EEG alpha profile: Male participants should not be pooled with female participants, because their alpha asymmetry profiles are diametrically opposed. There are also wide individual differences in time production: When “time disappeared”, TP becomes haphazard; when “time was slower” or “time was expanded”, TP is lengthened.

OBJECTIVE
Electroencephalographic biomarkers have been widely investigated in autism, in the search for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic outcome measures. Here we took advantage of the information available in temporal oscillatory patterns evoked by simple perceptual decisions to investigate whether stimulus dependent oscillatory signatures can be used as potential biomarkers in Autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
METHODS
We studied an extensive set of stimuli (9 categories of faces) and performed data driven classification (Support vector machine, SVM) of ASD vs. Controls with features based on the EEG power responses. We carried out an extensive time-frequency and synchrony analysis of distinct face categories requiring different processing mechanisms in terms of non-holistic vs. holistic processing.
RESULTS
We found that the neuronal oscillatory responses of low gamma frequency band, locked to photographic and abstract two-tone (Mooney) face stimulus presentation are decreased in ASD vs. the control group. We also found decreased time-frequency (TF) responses in the beta band in ASD after 350ms, possibly related to motor preparation. On the other hand, synchrony in the 30-45Hz band showed a distinct spatial pattern in ASD. These power changes enabled accurate classification of ASD with an SVM approach. SVM accuracy was approximately 85%. ROC curves showed about 94% AUC (area under the curve). Combination of Mooney and Photographic face stimuli evoked features enabled a better separation between groups, reaching an AUC of 98.6%.
CONCLUSIONS
We identified a relative decrease in EEG responses to face stimuli in ASD in the beta (15-30Hz; >350ms) and gamma (30-45Hz; 55-80Hz; 50-350ms) frequency ranges. These can be used as input of a machine learning approach to separate between groups with high accuracy.
SIGNIFICANCE
Future studies can use EEG time-frequency patterns evoked by particular types of faces as a diagnostic biomarker and potentially as outcome measures in therapeutic trials.

High amplitude artifacts represent a problem during EEG recordings in neuroscience research. Taking this into account, this paper proposes a method to identify high amplitude artifacts with no requirement for visual inspection, electrooscillogram (EOG) reference channel or user assigned parameters. A potential solution to the high amplitude artifacts (HAA) elimination is presented based on blind source separation methods. The assumption underlying the selection of components is that HAA are independent of the EEG signal and different HAA can be generated during the EEG recordings. Therefore, the number of components related to HAA is variable and depends on the processed signal, which means that the method is adaptable to the input signal. The results show, when removing the HAA artifacts, the delta band is distorted but all the other frequency bands are preserved. A case study with EEG signals recorded while participants performed on the Halstead Category Test (HCT) is presented. After HAA removal, data analysis revealed, as expected, an error-related frontal ERP wave: the feedback-related negativity (FRN) in response to feedback stimuli.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The readiness potential (RP)—a key ERP correlate of upcoming action—is known to precede subjects' reports of their decision to move. Some view this as evidence against a causal role for consciousness in human decision-making and thus against free-will. But previous work focused on arbitrary decisions—purposeless, unreasoned, and without consequences. It remains unknown to what degree the RP generalizes to deliberate, more ecological decisions. We directly compared deliberate and arbitrary decision-making during a $1000-donation task to non-profit organizations. While we found the expected RPs for arbitrary decisions, they were strikingly absent for deliberate ones. Our results and drift-diffusion model are congruent with the RP representing accumulation of noisy, random fluctuations that drive arbitrary—but not deliberate—decisions. They further point to different neural mechanisms underlying deliberate and arbitrary decisions, challenging the generalizability of studies that argue for no causal role for consciousness in decision-making to real-life decisions.

Intuitive assessment of mortality based on facial characteristics: Behavioral, electrocortical, and machine learning analyses

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Studies of various characteristics of the human face indicate that it contains a wealth of information about health status. Most studies involve objective measurement of facial features as correlated with historical health information. But some individuals also claim to be adept at intuitively gauging mortality based solely upon a quick glance at a person's photograph. To test this claim, we invited 12 such individuals to see if they could tell if a person was alive or dead based solely on a brief examination of his or her photograph. All photos used in the experiment were transformed into a uniform gray scale and counterbalanced across eight categories: gender, age, gaze direction, glasses, head position, smile, hair color, and image resolution. Participants examined 404 photographs displayed on a computer monitor, one photo at a time, each shown for a maximum of 8 seconds. Half of the individuals in the photos were deceased, and half were alive at the time the experiment was conducted. Participants were asked to indicate if they thought the person in a photo was living or deceased by pressing an appropriate button. Overall mean accuracy on this task was 53.6%, where 50% was expected by chance (p = 0.005, two-tail). Statistically significant accuracy was independently obtained in 5 of the 12 participants. We also collected 32-channel electrocortical recordings and observed a robust difference between images of deceased individuals correctly vs. incorrectly classified in the early event related potential at 100 ms post-stimulus onset. We then applied machine learning techniques to classify the photographs based on 11 image characteristics; both random forest and logistic regression machine learning approaches were used, and both classifiers failed to achieve accuracy above chance level. Our results suggest that some individuals can intuitively assess mortality based on some as-yet unknown features of the face.

OBJECTIVE:
We propose that clinicians can use suggestion to help treat conditions such as ADHD. Methods: We use EEG neurofeedback as a case study, alongside evidence from a recent pilot experiment utilizing a sham MRI scanner to highlight the therapeutic potential of suggestion-based treatments.
RESULTS:
The medical literature demonstrates that many practitioners already prescribe treatments that hardly outperform placebo comparators. Moreover, the sham MRI experiment showed that, even with full disclosure of the procedure, suggestion alone can reduce the symptomatology of ADHD.
CONCLUSION:
Non-deceptive suggestion-based treatments, especially those drawing on accessories from neuroscience, may offer a safe complement and potential alternative to current standard of care for individuals with ADHD.
