The emotional Stroop effect: Cognitive, emotional, and physiological aspects

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
This project explores the interaction between emotion and cognition. In high anxious participants, emotional stimuli capture attention and cause interference. This is the emotional Stroop effect. In four experiments, we examine the correlates of emotional Stroop interference using supraliminal and subliminal presentations. We compare explicit (affective ratings, explicit memory) and implicit (EDA, facial EMG) measures of emotional
processing.
METHODOLOGY:
Using the Stroop paradigm, we examined reaction times (RT) to emotional and neutral stimuli, comparing high anxious and low anxious participants. We manipulated the emotional value of the stimuli using classical conditioning. Initially neutral non-words were repeatedly paired with either negative or neutral images. We
presented the stimuli in the Stroop task either supraliminally or subliminally (using a sandwich masking procedure). We recorded changes in facial expressions (corrugator muscle) using electromyography (EMG), and electrodermal activity (EDA). Participants also rated the emotional value of the stimuli and we tested their memory for the type of images used in conditioning the stimuli.
RESULTS:
Higher levels of anxiety were related to increased interference from emotional stimuli (slower RTs to
negatively- relative to neutrally conditioned stimuli). This was the case when stimuli were presented supraliminally but not when they were presented subliminally, with the exception of participants who were aware of the stimuli despite the masking in the subliminal task. Despite the emotion manipulation showing consistent effects on the Stroop task, the explicit affective ratings were not always sensitive to this manipulation. Facial EMG activity however was consistently affected by the emotional value of the stimuli, both in high and low anxious participants, and both when stimuli were presented supraliminally and subliminally. Similarly, emotional stimuli also led to increased EDA under subliminal presentations, especially for high anxious participants.
CONCLUSIONS:
Overall, our results provide insight into the interaction between implicit and explicit processing of emotion. These different subsystems of emotion may operate independently. Specifically, we found instances where
emotion was evidently processed through implicit channels (facial expressions, EDA) despite not showing an effect on explicit systems (affective ratings, emotional Stroop interference). Importantly, these interactions can be modulated by individual differences in anxiety.

Remote staring detected by conscious and psychophysiological variables: Combining and improving two successful paradigms

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
We conducted a remote staring study that was intended to overcome some of the methodological shortcomings of earlier and current studies. We combined the classical setting EDA as dependant variable (Braud et al, 1993) with the paradigm that takes the starees´ conscious guesses as the main outcome. Based on findings in the field of social psychology (e.g. Wegner et al, 1987, 1994) we supposed that the classical instruction for the starer “to think not about the staree” in the non-staring condition would be rather counterproductive by making the image of this person tend to return to mind. Moreover we hypothesized that a different operationalization of the control condition a variance between staring and non-staring situation could produce clearer effects in the outcome variable. Therefore we tried to distract the starers completely from the starees during the non-stare conditions by a demanding cognitive task in half of the sessions or we left them with just a blank screen and the classical instruction to “think about something else” in the other half – in order to make a comparison.
Fifty participants were invited to take part as starees. After completing questionnaires on mindfulness, mood,
personality and paranormal belief they rested in a comfortable position in front of a video camera while their EDA was continuously monitored. According to a random schedule they were “stared at” through a closed circuit television system. Conscious guesses were not assessed in the classical forced-choice manner (“Have you been stared at? Yes / No?”) but were replaced by an “open-response” one that allowed them to guess not just when but also how long they felt being stared at. To avoid any cognitive strategies or response bias tendencies starees were blind against the number of staring / non staring periods (10 / 10) and also against the duration of these. Our results were as follows: Overall we did not find any staring effect at all, not in the EDA data and not in the conscious guesses data. The difference between the two conditions (standard vs. distraction) was not significant (p = .07) whereas a medium effect size staring effect according to our hypothesis of d = .43 (p = .085) for the difference between staring and non staring epochs could be found for the “distracting condition”.Because of the lack of any staring effect we could not demonstrate the advantages of our “distraction paradigm”. The results pointed into this direction but they can be of course mere chance findings. We nevertheless recommend that any future investigations into the “sense of being stared at” phenomenon take similar precautions when operationalizing their experimental conditions.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Empathy entails the capacities to resonate with another person's emotions, understand his/her thoughts and feelings, separate our own thoughts and emotions from those of the observed and responding with the appropriate prosocial and helpful behavior. While there is abundant research on the neurobiological mechanisms of some components of empathy (e.g., emotional contagion), few studies have considered the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the empathic response. The present study explores psychophysiological correlates (skin conductance level and the interbeat interval) as a function of the empathic response while participants watch and respond to actors portraying emotionally laden vignettes. Forty undergraduate psychology students were each presented with 40 emotional vignettes of positive or negative valence and asked to choose among three different empathic responses while their electrodermal and cardiac responses were measured. Overall, the study shows that higher levels of additive empathy are associated with increased cardiac activity (i.e., decreased Interbeat Interval) but not electrodermal activity.

Autonomic emotional responses to the induction of the rubber-hand illusion in those that report anomalous bodily experiences. Evidence for specific psychophysiological components associated with illusory body representations

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
We present the first study to examine indicators of autonomic arousal associated with shifts in body image and as a function of predisposition to report spontaneous anomalous bodily experiences (ABEs) from nonclinical samples. Participants completed the Temporal-Lobe Experience subscale of the Cardiff Anomalous Perception scale-a measure associated with anomalous experiences resulting from temporal lobe dysfunction (Bell, Halligan, & Ellis, 2006) followed by a rubber-hand illusion experiment. We examined: (a) the time taken to induce the illusion, (b) effects on the tonic skin conductance level, and (c) phasic skin conductance responses in the form of nonspecific skin conductance responses (NS-SCRs) in the period leading up to the declaration of the illusion. The illusion took significantly longer to induce in those reporting high levels of ABEs, relative to those reporting low levels of such experiences. A significant increase in the tonic skin conductance level and the frequency of NS-SCRs occurred in the period leading directly up to the declaration of the illusion. Both measures were significantly increased for those reporting higher-levels of ABEs. The data question generic notions of "weak" body representations subserving increasing malleability in body image. Instead, they lend general support for a "dysconnection" account of anomalous bodily experiences-at least for some nonclinical hallucinators. Theoretical considerations are discussed.

A psychophysiological investigation into the electrodermal components underlying the rubber-hand illusion in those who report out-of-body experiences and kindred hallucinations of the body and ‘self’

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
An out-of-body experience (OBE) can be defined as “an experience in which a person perceives the world from a location outside their physical body”. Previously, research has indicated that these experiences reflect a temporary breakdown in typically stable egocentric body-based processing and multi-sensory integration (Blanke et al., 2005). The consequence of this is a disintegration of the bodily ‘self’ in space. In addition to OBEs, kindred hallucinations like “sensed-presence experiences” (SPE) – are also very common in non-clinical samples. Both are thought to reflect temporary disorders in body processing. Here we present preliminary findings from the first investigation of electrodermal activity from hallucinating OBEers and those who report SPEs (relative to controls) during the induction of a rubber-arm illusion. This task has been shown to be a useful and reliable measure of embodiment and multi-sensory integration. We present evidence for a new psychophysiological component of the electrodermal response underlying the induction of the rubber-hand illusion – that appears to occur principally with the existence and strength of the illusion. Specifically, we show that a DC shift emerges and precedes the report of the rubber-arm illusion in those that experience the illusion and that this component is stronger for those who report stronger illusions and those who are prone to body-based hallucinations (OBEs / SPEs). This component is severely attenuated or absent in those who do not report the illusion. In addition, there was some evidence that electrodermal responses to a threat to the rubber-arm were heightened for those reporting OBE experiences.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
An out-of-body experience (OBE) can be defined as “an experience in which a person perceives the world from a location outside their physical body”. Previously, research has indicated that these experiences reflect a temporary breakdown in typically stable egocentric body-based processing, embodiment, and multi-sensory integration (Blanke et al., 2005) and can be associated with increased degrees of cortical hyperexcitability and temporal lobe dysfunction (Braithwaite et al., 2011; in press / 2012). Kindred hallucinations of self-reduplication, like “sensed-presence experiences” (SPE), are also thought to reflect a breakdown in self-processing, but in the absence of any compromise to the perceiving self and embodiment. We present preliminary findings from the first investigation of Electrodermal activity from hallucinating OBEers and those who report SPEs (and controls) during the induction of a rubber-hand illusion – a task which provides a useful and reliable measure of embodiment and multi-sensory integration. Preliminary evidence suggests a previously unreported psychophysiological component of the Electrodermal response underlying the induction of the rubber-hand illusion. Specifically, we show that (i) significant DC shifts emerge in the electrodermal activity that precedes the rubber-arm illusion; and (ii) this component is strongest for the OBE groups and those who report stronger and more convincing illusions.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Empathy comprises the ability to understand another person’s thoughts and feelings, separate our
own thoughts and emotions from those of the observed, respond with the appropriate prosocial
and helpful behavior, and resonate with his/her emotions. Some components of the empathic
processes, such as emotional contagion and theory of mind, have been abundantly explored in
several studies, however few studies have considered the neurobiological mechanisms underlying
the empathic response.
Objectives: The present study explores psychophysiological correlates (skin conductance level and
the interbeat interval) as a function of the empathic response while participants watch and
respond to actors portraying emotionally laden vignettes.
Methods: Forty undergraduate psychology students were each presented with 40 emotional
vignettes of positive or negative valence and asked to choose among three different empathic
responses while their electrodermal and cardiac responses were measured.
Results: The study shows that higher levels of empathy are associated with increased cardiac
activity (i.e., decreased Interbeat Interval) but not with electrodermal activity.
Discussion: This finding suggests that the cardiovascular activity appears to be sensitive to the
level of empathic response to emotionally laden vignettes, and in turn, this may represent an
important autonomic biomarker of additive empathic response. Multiple biological subsystems are
known to regulate the cardiovascular activity, making it highly sensitive to many psychological
processes, such as attention, memory, brain reward, etc.
Conclusion: This specific sensitivity makes the cardiac response a good candidate for a biomarker
of more complex and multidimensional processes such as the empathic response. More
consideration will be also given to possible role of cardiac reactivity as a biomarker of the
empathic response.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In previously reported double-blind experiments, electrodermal
activity (EDA) monitored during display of randomly selected photographs
showed that EDA was higher before emotional photos than before calm photos
( p ¼ 0.002). This differential effect, suggestive of precognition, was dubbed
‘‘presentiment.’’ Three new double-blind experiments were conducted in an
attempt to replicate the original studies using the same basic design, but with
new physiological monitoring hardware, software, stimulus photos, subject
populations, and testing environments.
The three replications involved 109 participants who together contributed
3,709 trials. The new studies again showed higher EDA before emotional
photos than before calm photos ( p ¼ 0.001). All four experiments combined
involved 133 participants and 4,569 trials; the associated weighted mean effect
size (per trial) was e¼0.064 6 0.015, over 4 standard errors from a null effect.
As a more general test, presentiment predicts a positive correlation between
pre-stimulus EDA and independently assessed emotionality ratings of the photo
targets. The observed correlation across all four experiments was significantly
positive ( p ¼ 0.008).
Consideration of alternative explanations, including expectation, sensory
cues, hardware or software artifacts, inappropriate analyses, and anticipatory
strategies, revealed no suitable candidates that could systematically generate
the observed results. This series of four experiments, supported by successful
replications conducted by other investigators, appears to demonstrate a small
magnitude but statistically robust form of precognition in the human autonomic
nervous system.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
We report data from two patients, followed over 3 years after electrodermal biofeedback treatment. Patients were trained three times each week for four weeks to increase their sympathetic arousal using electrodermal biofeedback. This treatment was directed at enabling the patients to change their psychophysiological state as a countermeasure to prevent seizures. Both patients voluntarily kept a record of seizure frequency over the year preceding the treatment and continued to record their seizures for up to 3 years after the termination of biofeedback treatment. Both patients showed a marked reduction in seizure frequency (54.9% and 59.8%) during the month of biofeedback treatment. This improvement was maintained over the subsequent years. We highlight the therapeutic potential of biofeedback interventions that enable patients to volitionally control their state of physiological arousal in the management of drug-resistant epilepsy.
