Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Using the ProComp+ neuro-feedback apparatus, intermittent feedback was given to eight participants as they performed an alternating bimodal (i.e., normal and paranormal) task, switched at irregular intervals. During normal modes, participants were required to keep EEG alpha rhythm above threshold, and/or EMG amplitude below threshold, in order to elicit positive feedback of a 'Spinning Man' animation. The man spun only when one or both threshold contingencies were met. During paranormal modes, regardless of alpha and/or EMG amplitudes, the participants were required to keep the man spinning, but they were blind to the fact that their attempts could only elicit micro-PK changes (i.e., 'anomalous perturbations') on a single frame taken from the Spinning Man animation sequence. If psi was elicited during this mode, anomalies were expected as a result of participants' focussed attention. It was hypothesised that (i) video anomalies might occur during the paranormal modes, and (ii) EEG alpha amplitude might be higher, and/or integrated EMG amplitude might be lower, during paranormal modes. Stills of the video frame caught during paranormal modes were later analysed. No evidence was found for (i) or (ii). Three un-hypothesised 'anomalous' effects occurred during the running of the experiment but, on parsimonious grounds, these were attributed to software flaws. It is argued that lack of biofeedback during paranormal modes may have been psi-inhibitive. Previous meditation and biofeedback experience had no effect on EEG alpha amplitude or EMG. Some participants showed evidence of waveform training. Transliminality correlated with alpha and EMG in the directions hypothesised, but only approached significance in the Transliminality/alpha correlation.

OBJECTIVES:
This project explores the interaction between emotion and cognition. In high anxious participants, emotional stimuli capture attention and cause interference. This is the emotional Stroop effect. In four experiments, we examine the correlates of emotional Stroop interference using supraliminal and subliminal presentations. We compare explicit (affective ratings, explicit memory) and implicit (EDA, facial EMG) measures of emotional
processing.
METHODOLOGY:
Using the Stroop paradigm, we examined reaction times (RT) to emotional and neutral stimuli, comparing high anxious and low anxious participants. We manipulated the emotional value of the stimuli using classical conditioning. Initially neutral non-words were repeatedly paired with either negative or neutral images. We
presented the stimuli in the Stroop task either supraliminally or subliminally (using a sandwich masking procedure). We recorded changes in facial expressions (corrugator muscle) using electromyography (EMG), and electrodermal activity (EDA). Participants also rated the emotional value of the stimuli and we tested their memory for the type of images used in conditioning the stimuli.
RESULTS:
Higher levels of anxiety were related to increased interference from emotional stimuli (slower RTs to
negatively- relative to neutrally conditioned stimuli). This was the case when stimuli were presented supraliminally but not when they were presented subliminally, with the exception of participants who were aware of the stimuli despite the masking in the subliminal task. Despite the emotion manipulation showing consistent effects on the Stroop task, the explicit affective ratings were not always sensitive to this manipulation. Facial EMG activity however was consistently affected by the emotional value of the stimuli, both in high and low anxious participants, and both when stimuli were presented supraliminally and subliminally. Similarly, emotional stimuli also led to increased EDA under subliminal presentations, especially for high anxious participants.
CONCLUSIONS:
Overall, our results provide insight into the interaction between implicit and explicit processing of emotion. These different subsystems of emotion may operate independently. Specifically, we found instances where
emotion was evidently processed through implicit channels (facial expressions, EDA) despite not showing an effect on explicit systems (affective ratings, emotional Stroop interference). Importantly, these interactions can be modulated by individual differences in anxiety.

The purpose of our research is to study the coordinated collective cortical activity derived from magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings during the practice of meditation. Some publications demonstrated an enhancement of synchronization of brain signals (scalp electroencephalographic recordings) during meditation. However other results have cast some doubt in these observations; specifically, studies that showed that gamma activity inferred from scalp EEG recordings is largely the result of increased tone in head muscles that closely associates with brain function. MEG recordings were taken of participants during a control period and during one-pointed (samatha) and insight (vipassana) meditation. In addition, simultaneous electromyographic (EMG) recordings were taken to assess scalp muscle activity. The neurophysiological activity (MEG signals) is analysed in terms of phase synchronization at different frequency bands from 4 to 35 Hz. The EMG signals of scalp sensors showed that there was no increase in power at any frequency during meditation in the expert group, hence these results do not support our hypothesis of a possible enhancement of muscle activity during meditation practice. No significant change in synchronization amongst the MEG sensor signals during meditation was noted, thus we could not reproduce previous published results. This could be due to several factors: we used MEG and not EEG (EEG uses a common reference and that poses problems when assessing synchrony); our subjects performed other types of meditation; and finally, other studies used monks with a level of expertise probably higher than that of our participants.

The present study tested the impact of an acoustic prepulse on pain caused by an electrical shock to the arm. If pain can be inhibited by a prepulse, then prepulses might be added to diagnostic and therapeutic medical interventions in which pain is unavoidable in order to decrease patient discomfort and increase patient compliance. College students had shocks (150V, 0.5ms duration) delivered to the upper arm.On some trials this shockwas preceded by a 40ms broadband noise at 80 dB, with a lead interval of 80ms.Midway through the 16-trial session, participants were told that the prepulse would either increase or decrease the pain of the shock (N520 per instruction group). The only difference between Blocks 1 and 2 were these instructions; the actual prepulses were not changed. Participants rated the pain and unpleasantness of each shock on a 100mm visual analog scale (a separate sheet for each trial). Eyeblink EMG was measured from orbicularis oculi ipsilateral to the shocked arm. Rated pain in the shock-alone condition increased from Block 1 to Block 2 by 38%. In Block 1, the prepulse increased pain by 19%. In Block 2, the prepulse increased pain by 6% in the Increase group, and decreased pain by 5% in the Decrease group, relative to the control condition in Block 2. EMG activity elicited by the shock was not affected by the prepulse. These data show that an acoustic prepulse did not inhibit the pain of an intense shock to the arm, perhaps because the timing between the two stimuli was too long. A second study with a shorter lead interval will also be reported.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.
