Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Previous research established that the externalizing dimension of personality is a high-risk factor for antisocial behaviour and psychopathy. Based on evidence that misinterpretation of social and emotional cues can result in the generation of inappropriate social responses, such as violence, it was hypothesised that high externalizers may have some deficit in processing facial expressions. In a speeded emotion categorization task (emotion vs. neutral), unlike low externalizers, high externalizers did not show an advantage in classifying a face as emotional compared to neutral. Moreover, they were significantly slower in the angry and happy conditions than low externalizers. No group differences emerged in the accuracy data. These results support our hypothesis and suggest an emotion specific deficit for high externalizers.

Previous research established that the externalizing dimension of personality is a high-risk factor for antisocial and violent behaviour, which seems to have a neurobiological substrate. Misinterpretation of social and emotional cues can result in the generation of inappropriate social responses, such as violence. The present study thus aimed to examine whether there are differences at the ERP level between high and low externalizers while performing a speeded emotion categorization task (emotion vs. neutral). Results observed for the P100 and N170 components point to the existence of differences in emotional processing at short latencies. At long latencies, some differences between the experimental groups regarding emotions of fear and anger were also observed. These results suggest an emotion specific deficit for high externalizers.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
This project aimed to identify the psychophysiological markers of externalizing personality within a non-clinical population, during performance on a range of executive, emotional and social tasks. Before psychophysiological data collection, the Externalizing Inventory (ESI) was translated and adapted to the Portuguese population. The validation studies of the ESI showed good psychometric qualities, consistent with the original structure of the instrument. A sample of 426 university students was initially assessed on several measures of personality, anxiety and depression, and based on their externalizing scores (high, average and low), a sample of 58 participants was tested in a number of laboratory tasks of executive, emotional and social processing, with the co-registration of EEG/ERP. Participants scoring high and average on the externalizing vulnerability performed significantly worse on the subscale “Loss of Set – Conceptual” of the Halstead Category Test than participants scoring low, and ERP differences were also observed in executive tasks. Results from a speeded emotion categorization task (emotional vs. neutral face) showed significantly slower RTs in the angry and happy conditions for the high externalizers than low externalizers, as well as differences in early and late ERPs. The present results indicate that a higher externalizing vulnerability is associated with an increased difficulty at the level of abstract concept formation and poor cognitive flexibility. Moreover, there is evidence of an emotion specific deficit for high externalizers, as well as alterations in the error processing mechanisms, as evidenced by electrophysiological markers of such processes.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.

Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Aging is associated with changes in cognitive and affective functioning, which likely shape older adults’ social cognition. As the neural and psychological mechanisms underlying age differences in social abilities remain poorly understood, the present study aims to extend the research in this field. To this purpose, younger (n = 30; Mage = 26.6), middle-aged (n = 30; Mage = 48.4), and older adults (n = 29; Mage = 64.5) performed a task designed to assess affective perspective-taking, during an EEG recording. In this task, participants decided whether a target facial expression of emotion (FEE) was congruent or incongruent with that of a masked intervener of a previous scenario, which portrayed a neutral or an emotional scene. Older adults showed worse performance in comparison to the other groups. Regarding electrophysiological results, while younger and middle-aged adults showed higher late positive potentials (LPPs) after FEEs congruent with previous scenarios than after incongruent FEEs, older adults had similar amplitudes after both. This insensitivity of older adults’ LPPs in differentiating congruent from incongruent emotional context-target FEE may be related to their difficulty in generating information about others’ inner states and using that information in social interactions.

Introduction: Attentional Bias (AB) is the tendency among individuals with emotional dysregulation to preferentially allocate attention toward negative emotional stimuli rather than positive ones, influencing the encoding and consolidation of emotional events. Targeted Memory Reactivation (TMR) holds promise in memory enhancement
by reactivating specific memory traces during sleep. We aimed to explore the potential of TMR in modulating AB.
Methods: Eighteen females (mean age ± standard deviation, 21.56 ± 2.04) participated in a between-subjects design. AB was assessed using a modified Dot-Probe Task(DPT) before (T1) and after (T2) a nocturnal sleep with acoustic stimulation (TMR vs. Control) during slow-wave sleep (SWS). During DPT, participants viewed pairs of
emotional faces (positive/negative) followed by a probe. They indicated the probe's position (left/right) while simultaneously being exposed to a specific auditory cue, one for positive and one for negative image-probe association (positive valence/negative valence). During sleep, the TMR group was exposed to the sound associated with the positive valence of the DPT, while a novel sound was presented to the Control group. To assess the effect of the acoustic stimulation during sleep, mixed ANOVA was applied to the reaction times (RTs) of the DPT, with valence (positive/negative), session (T1/T2), and group (TMR/Control) as within/between factors. To evaluate the EEG correlates of TMR, unpaired t-tests were employed comparing ERPs between TMR and Control groups in terms of amplitude and timefrequency analysis.
Results: ANOVA on RTs showed a significant effect of the session factor (p = 0.02), with a general reduction in RTs at T2. The EEG correlates of nocturnal stimulation revealed a higher ERP amplitude 1000 post-stimulation at the frontal site (p < 0.01). Concurrently, timefrequency analysis highlighted an increased slow spindle activity in
the frontal and central regions (all p < 0.01) 1000 ms poststimulation.
Conclusion: TMR does not seem to modulate AB in healthy subjects, although it appears to reactivate declarative memory traces, as indicated by increased ERP amplitudes and spindle activity. These findings suggest that the implicit memory process underlying AB modification, potentially independent from hippocampal processes, is not susceptible to modulation through TMR during SWS.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.

Significance
Mental imagery disturbances are among the common features of psychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions, yet why imagery is so consistently affected has remained unexplained. We propose that the overlap between imagery disturbances and affective and neurodevelopmental conditions is explained by their shared origins in the brain’s processing of body signals. In this view, disrupting this system produces characteristic imagery disturbances as a direct and predictable consequence across a wide range of conditions.
Abstract
Mental imagery is closely linked to emotional experience, mental health, and neurodevelopmental variation. Yet why imagery should be so pervasively associated with both affective and neurodevelopmental conditions simultaneously remains an open question. We propose that interoception provides a key mechanistic link. In this view, mental imagery relies on the same interoceptive and insular functions (including emotional processing, salience detection, and the sense of agency over self-generated content) that are characteristically altered across affective and neurodevelopmental disorders. Interoceptive dysfunction may thus constitute a common thread between imagery disturbances across diagnostic boundaries, positioning imagery as a clinically accessible window into interoceptive function and suggesting novel therapeutic targets.
