Implicit contextual cueing refers to a top-down mechanism in which visual search is facilitated by learned contextual features. In the current study we aimed to investigate the mechanism underlying implicit contextual learning using object information as a contextual cue. Therefore, we measured eye movements during an object-based contextual cueing task. We demonstrated that visual search is facilitated by repeated object information and that this reduction in response times is associated with shorter fixation durations. This indicates that by memorizing associations between objects in our environment we can recognize objects faster, thereby facilitating visual search.

Eye movements were measured during an object based contextual cueing task. We demonstrated that visual search is facilitated by repeated object information and that this reduction in response times is associated with shorter fixation durations, whereas the number of fixations and the saccade amplitude were unaffected. In all, the current study resolves an important issue in object contextual cueing by showing that repeated objects can facilitate visual search through direct modulation of object identification.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
During this research project (73/06) we investigated the mechanism underlying implicit contextual learning as well as its neural correlates. Implicit contextual cueing is a learning mechanism in which visual information from our environment is memorized in order to facilitate visual search.
In the first part of our research project we studied the mechanism underlying implicit contextual cueing using eye movement recording. First, we showed that peripheral vision can be used to memorize the context of a target (Van Asselen et al. 2009), whereas in our following study we demonstrated that object-based contextual cueing is associated with shorter fixation durations (Van Asselen et al., 2010). Finally, we showed that when two contextual cues are presented simultaneously, the contextual cueing effect is much larger than when one cue is presented. This effect is associated with fewer fixations and shorter saccade amplitudes, suggesting that a different search strategy is used.
In the second part of this research project we aimed to look at the neural basis of implicit contextual cueing. Therefore, we tested patients with Huntington’s and Parkinson’s disease with a contextual cueing task and found that these patients are not able to benefit from the repeated contextual information (Van Asselen et al., 2009). Since both of these neurodegenerative diseases affect the basal ganglia, our findings suggest an important role for this brain area. Finally, by using fMRI we demonstrated that the exact neural network that is involved in implicit contextual cueing depends on the type of cues (object or spatial) that are used to guide attention.

Implicit contextual cueing refers to a top-down mechanism in which visual search is facilitated by learned contextual features. In the current study we aimed to investigate the mechanism underlying implicit contextual learning using object information as a contextual cue. Therefore, we measured eye movements during an object-based contextual cueing task. We demonstrated that visual search is facilitated by repeated object information and that this reduction in response times is associated with shorter fixation durations. This indicates that by memorizing associations between objects in our environment we can recognize objects faster, thereby facilitating visual search.

In the current study, we aimed to investigate the emotion recognition impairment in Huntington’s disease (HD) patients and define whether this deficit is caused by impaired scanning patterns of the face. To achieve this goal, we recorded eye movements during a two-alternative forced-choice emotion recognition task. HD patients in pre-symptomatic (n=16) and symptomatic (n=9) disease stages were tested and their performance was compared to a control group (n=22). In our emotion recognition task, participants had to indicate whether a face reflected one of six basic emotions. In addition, and in order to define whether emotion recognition was altered when the participants were forced to look at a specific component of the face, we used a second task where only limited facial information was provided (eyes/mouth in partially masked faces). Behavioral results showed no differences in the ability to recognize emotions between pre-symptomatic gene carriers and controls. However, an emotion recognition deficit was found for all six basic emotion categories in early stage HD. Analysis of eye movement patterns showed that patient and controls used similar scanning strategies. Patterns of deficits were similar regardless of whether parts of the faces were masked or not, thereby confirming that selective attention to particular face parts is not underlying the deficits. These results suggest that the emotion recognition deficits in symptomatic HD patients cannot be explained by impaired scanning patterns of faces. Furthermore, no selective deficit for recognition of disgust was found in pre-symptomatic HD patients.

In contrast to previous studies in which spatial information was used as a contextual cue, we used object identity. By memorizing the covariation of objects that are present in our environment, attention can be guided faster to a specific target. We measured eye movements during a visual search task containing repeated object information. We showed that visual search is facilitated by repeated object information and that this reduction in response times is associated with shorter fixation durations. This indicates that by memorizing associations between objects in our environment we can recognize objects faster, thereby facilitating visual search.

Implicit contextual cueing refers to a top-down mechanism in which visual search is facilitated by learned contextual features. In the current study we aim to investigate the mechanisms underlying object based implicit contextual cueing by studying eye movements. A visual search task was used in which participants (n = 16) had to locate a target object (abstract line drawing with an opening) among a number of distractors (closed abstract line drawing). In half of the trials the set of objects presented was repeated (Repeated trials), whereas in the other trials a new set of objects was used (New trials). The location of the objects was randomly defined and the objects in the Repeated and New trials were repeated the same number of times. Eye movements were recorded with an iViewX High-speed Eye-Tracker. Subjects located the target faster in the Repeated trials as compared with New trials (p<0.001), indicating that the sets of objects were memorized and search was facilitated. Shorter fixation durations were found for the repeated trials than for the new trials [t (20) = 3.6, p < 0.01]. Furthermore, the Time from Last Fixation until Button Press (TLFBP) was significantly shorter in the repeated than in the new trials [t (20) = 4.6, p = 0.001]. No effect was found for the Number of Fixations and the Saccade Amplitude. This indicates that object recognition is facilitated when object information is used as contextual cue.

Implicit context cueing refers to a top-down mechanism in which visual search is facilitated by learned contextual features. To define the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon, previous studies have analyzed the effect of repeated spatial configurations. Although this paradigm has lead to important insights, it can be argued that it has biased our knowledge about implicit context cueing, since spatial context cueing has the unique characteristic that the location of a target is predictable. That is, the target position is fixed in relation to the spatial configuration. When object cues are used, the mechanism that facilitates search is not so obvious. In the current study we aim to investigate the mechanisms underlying object cueing by studying eye movements and we try to define the role of peripheral vision. A visual search task was used in which participants (n = 16) had to locate a target object (abstract line drawing with an opening) among a number of distractors (closed abstract line drawing). In half of the trials the set of objects presented was repeated (Repeated trials), whereas in the other trials a new set of objects was used (New trials). The location of the objects was randomly defined and the objects in the Repeated and New trials were repeated the same number of times. Eye movements were recorded with an iViewX High-speed Eye-Tracker. Subjects located the target faster in the Repeated trials as compared with New trials (p<0.001), indicating that the sets of objects were memorized and search was facilitated. By analyzing the different oculomotor parameters, we found that faster response times are due to a decrease in the number of saccades (p<0.05) and not due to a difference in the saccade amplitude, intersaccadic fixation duration or time between last saccade and button press. The finding that fewer saccades are made is particularly fascinating, since it suggests that fewer objects had to be foveated in order to recognize the target. A possible explanation for this finding is that objects do not need to be foveated for object identification, suggesting an important role for peripheral vision. In order to verify this hypothesis, we performed a second experiment in which participants performed the same search task, but now had to foveate a fixation cross during the entire experiment. Surprisingly, repeated object information facilitated search even when only peripheral vision was used (p < 0.05), thus confirming an important role for peripheral vision in implicit context cueing. When the results of these two studies are taken together, we can conclude that implicit object cueing facilitates object recognition in peripheral vision leading to a more effective search.

Implicit context cueing refers to the facilitation of a visual search by learned contextual features of our environment. In the current study the mechanism underlying this phenomenon is investigated. In contrast to previous studies in which spatial information was used as a contextual cue, we used object identity. The location of the target was not predictable. Eye movement data was recorded for sixteen healthy adults in order to define different oculomotor parameters. Results indicate that the faster response times in trials with a repeated context are due to a decrease in the number of saccades and not due to shorter fixations, saccades or motor responses. In a second study, the role of peripheral vision in implicit context cueing was studied. The same experiment was repeated, but now subjects had to fixate a cross. Unexpectedly, repeated object information facilitated search when only peripheral vision was used. Together, this suggests that fewer saccades are necessary to locate the target, possibly because the target is recognized faster in peripheral vision.

OBJECTIVES:
Investigate the mechanism underlying implicit contextual learning and study its neural correlates.
METHODS:
A series of contextual cueing tasks were developed to study different aspects of implicit contextual learning using eye movement recording. Moreover, to define the neural correlates of implicit contextual cueing, several patient and neuroimaging studies were performed.
RESULTS:
We have shown that a snapshot of local contextual information is made using peripheral vision and that different types of contextual information can be used to facilitate visual search through a specific underlying mechanisms. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the importance of the basal ganglia in implicit learning. Finally, distinct neural correlates were found when different types of contextual information were used.
CONCLUSIONS:
Implicit contextual cueing is a complex learning mechanism in which different types of contextual information can be used to facilitate visual search through distinct attention mechanisms. Furthermore, neural correlates of implicit contextual cueing include the basal ganglia, MTL and fronto-parietal networks.
DISCUSSION:
Future research projects should be aimed at further defining the specific role of the basal ganglia and MTL.

Change blindness is a failure to detect changes if the change occurs during a mask or distraction. Without distraction, it is assumed that the visual transients associated with the change will automatically capture attention (exogenous control), leading to detection. However, visual transients are a defining feature of naturalistic dynamic scenes. Are artificial distractions needed to hide changes to a dynamic scene? Do the temporal demands of the scene instead lead to greater endogenous control that may result in viewers missing a change in plain sight? In the present study we pitted endogenous and exogenous factors against each other during a card trick. Complete change blindness was demonstrated even when a salient highlight was inserted coincident with the change. These results indicate strong endogenous control of attention during dynamic scene viewing and its ability to override exogenous influences even when it is to the detriment of accurate scene representation.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
When watching TV we often have the impression that poorly synchronised audio can “popout”, drawing attention to the speaking actor’s mouth. But how does such capture relate to the levels at which audiovisual asynchrony detection becomes explicit?
Participant eye movements were recorded while they watched an edited thirteen minute TV interview. Unbeknownst to participants, the audiovisual synchrony was manipulated across cuts to create eleven synch conditions between -200ms (audio first) and +200ms (video first). Each synch condition was presented twice with a return to 0ms in between. Conditions gradually increased across the video, +40 to +200ms, then decreased from -40ms to -200ms. Following the initial free-viewing, participants were then instructed to explicitly identify whether the audio was in synch for a 5s clip taken from the same interview under the same eleven synch conditions.
Analysis of participant eye movements during free-viewing revealed a significant bias towards the mouth and away from the eyes at -120ms, +80ms and +120ms asynchrony, levels at which asynchrony was not explicitly detected. These results indicate that asynchronous audiovisual speech captures overt attention even when the degree of asynchrony is subthreshold for explicit awareness and may be used as a measure of implicit asynchrony detection.

An everyday example of change blindness is our difficulty to detect cuts in an edited moving-image. Edit blindness (Smith & Henderson, 2008) is created by adhering to the continuity editing conventions of Hollywood, for example, coinciding a cut with a sudden onset of motion (match-action). In this study, we isolated the roles motion and audio play in limiting awareness of match-action cuts by removing motion before and/or after cuts in existing Hollywood film clips and presenting the clips with or without the original soundtrack whilst participants tried to detect cuts. Removing post-cut motion significantly decreased cut detection time and the probability of missing the cut. By comparison, removing pre-cut motion had no effect suggesting, contrary to the editing literature, that the onset of motion before a cut may not be as critical for creating edit blindness as the motion after a cut. Analysis of eye movements indicated that viewers reoriented less to new content across intact match-action cuts than shots with motion removed. Audio played a surprisingly large part in creating edit blindness with edit blindness mostly disappearing without audio. These results extend film editor intuitions and are discussed in the context of the Attentional Theory of Cinematic Continuity (Smith, 2012a).

BACKGROUND
There is growing evidence for a positive effect of cultivated (i.e. developed through training) mindfulness on a range of cognitive functions. There are limited data at present examining the association between dispositional (trait) mindfulness, as measured in the general non-meditating population using self-report questionnaires, and cognitive function.
AIMS OF THE STUDY
To examine the effects of cultivated and dispositional (trait) mindfulness on smooth pursuit (SPEM) and anti-saccade (AS) tasks known to engage the fronto-parietal network implicated in attentional and motion detection processes, and the fronto-striatal network implicated in cognitive control, respectively.
METHODS
Sixty healthy men (19-59 years), of whom 30 were experienced mindfulness practitioners and 30 meditation-naïve, underwent infrared oculographic assessment of SPEM and AS performance. Trait mindfulness was assessed using the self-report Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ).
RESULTS
Meditators, relative to meditation-naïve individuals, made significantly fewer catch-up and anticipatory saccades during the SPEM task, and had significantly lower intra-individual variability in gain and spatial error during the AS task. No SPEM or AS measure correlated significantly with FFMQ scores in meditation-naïve individuals.
CONCLUSIONS
Cultivated, but not dispositional, mindfulness is associated with improved attention and sensorimotor control as indexed by SPEM and AS tasks.

Dreamers were long thought absolutely isolated from the outside world. Yet psychophysiological studies over the past 40 years have firmly established that lucid dreamers can use eye movements to report on their dream content in real time while in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. We now also know that sensory input is not completely suppresssed during sleep. A recent study by Konkoly et al. illustrates how experimenters can question lucid dreamers during ongoing dreams and asks whether more extended two-way communication during lucid REM sleep dreaming is feasible.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
When looking at visual images, the eyes move to the most salient and behaviourally relevant objects. Saliency and semantic information significantly explain where people look. Less is known about the spatiotemporal properties of eye movements (i.e., how people look). We show that three latent variables explain 60% of eye movement dynamics of more than a hundred observers looking at hundreds of different natural images. The first component explaining 30% of variability loads on fixation duration, and it does not relate to image saliency or semantics; it approximates a power-law distribution of gaze steps, an intrinsic dynamic measure, and identifies observers with two viewing styles: static and dynamic. Notably, these viewing styles were also identified when observers look at a blank screen. These results support the importance of endogenous processes such as intrinsic dynamics to explain eye movement spatiotemporal properties.

Every time we move our eyes, the retinal locations of objects change. To distinguish the changes caused by eye movements from actual external motion of the objects, the visual system is thought to anticipate the consequences of eye movements (saccades). Single neuron recordings have indeed demonstrated changes in receptive fields before saccade onset. Although some EEG studies with human participants have also demonstrated a pre-saccadic increased potential over the hemisphere that will process a stimulus after a saccade, results have been mixed. Here, we used magnetoencephalography to investigate the timing and lateralization of visually evoked planar gradients before saccade onset. We modelled the gradients from trials with both a saccade and a stimulus as the linear combination of the gradients from two conditions with either only a saccade or only a stimulus. We reasoned that any residual gradients in the condition with both a saccade and a stimulus must be uniquely linked to visually-evoked neural activity before a saccade. We observed a widespread increase in residual planar gradients. Interestingly, this increase was bilateral, showing activity both contralateral and ipsilateral to the stimulus, i.e. over the hemisphere that would process the stimulus after saccade offset. This pattern of results is consistent with predictive pre-saccadic changes involving both the current and the future receptive fields involved in processing an attended object, well before the start of the eye movement. The active, sensorimotor coupling of vision and the oculomotor system may underlie the seamless subjective experience of stable and continuous perception.

Background
When looking at visual images, the eyes move to the most salient and behaviourally relevant objects. Saliency and semantic information significantly explain where people look. Less is known about the role of intrinsic brain dynamics in shaping oculomotor behaviour and about the link between eye movements and memory recall.
Aims
We aimed to study the link between eye movement dynamics during free-viewing, subsequent memory recall of visual stimuli, and intrinsic brain dynamics measured with high density EEG.
Method
We pursued such aims through three experiments. In Experiment 1 we collected eye-movements while participants were freely viewing a set of images, a subset of which was subsequently recalled. In Experiment 2 we collected high-density EEG (hdEEG) data during resting-state in observers with different spontaneous viewing styles. In Experiment 3 we collected simultaneous eye-tracking and hdEEG data during image-viewing. As an extension of the project, we applied the same approach on eye movements of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) patients.
Results
We identified spontaneous visual exploration styles in free-viewing which relate to stable properties of resting-state brain dynamics. We also identified subtle oculomotor alterations in AD. We are currently investigating the relationship between eye-movements and online brain activity to identify oculomotor markers of altered brain dynamics.
Conclusions
Overall, this project supported the hypothesis that intrinsic brain dynamics have a role in shaping oculomotor behaviour in free-viewing. The investigation of the link between oculomotor behaviour and intrinsic brain processes can help the identification of oculomotor markers of neurodegenerative pathologies such as AD.
