To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

SUMMARY:
There are several useful methods to examine brain functions from outside of the body. One of them is fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) which can be used to measure only the cerebral cortex near the scalp (depth: 2-3 cm). fNIRS is non-stressful the same as EEG measurements, so it is a suitable method for sensitive subjects. The present paper deals with 3 topics using fNIRS. First, brain blood flow was measured while guessing a hidden figure in a forced-choice test Spontaneous blood flow change often occurred at the temporal lobe, and awareness was slightly more activated at that time. Second, the cognitive process for human facial expressions was researched. It is said that Japanese are expressionless or vague compared with people of other cultures. Subjects tried to distinguish emotions of vague faces made by a Japanese actress. The task was relatively easy for Japanese while it was difficult for Chinese. Third, brain blood flow of various experts was measured while they were guessing for the invalid parts of the inside of human body or for a small thing hidden in a dark box Brain activities of star psychics during clairvoyance were not similar to activities of other subjects. The characteristic activated area of star psychics was the prefrontal area although the guessing task required formulating visual images and many subjects showed activation of the right temporal lobe.

Introduction. Evoked potentials are real-time electrophysiological markers of cognitive operations and especially mnemonic processes. The N400 wave has traditionally been studied to characterise the processes involved in memorising verbal material. To investigate the existence of specific memory processes for each information domain, functional analogues of this wave were examined during the processing of non-verbal stimuli, such as faces. Aim. Using an inter-subject design, the classic verbal N400 wave was compared with its functional analogue during the processing of faces in a contextual preactivation task adapted to the visual domain of faces. Subjects and methods. After several sessions dedicated to learning a set of faces, another evoked potential recording session was held in order to analyse the effects of the existence of structural inconsistencies in these stimuli and to compare them, with regard to their topographic distribution and neural generators, with those observed in the classic verbal N400 task. Results. A verbal N400 wave was observed with a (slightly right) centroparietal distribution, and this response was distinguished from another negative wave obtained during the processing of facial inconsistencies in the same group of participants, with a predominantly occipital localisation and differentiated neural generators. Conclusions. These findings support the hypothesis of the specificity of the neural mechanisms involved in the mnemonic processing of faces and words, which is in line with the neurocognitive models that suggest the independence or modularity of memory processes in different domains of information.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The authors tested a famous Chinese psychic (female, 40 years old) during psychokinesis tasks “teleportation”. Targets were vitamin pills on an electric balance or in a bottle. The subject tried to teleport the pills in free style tests for 30-45 min. During the tasks, her brain blood flow was measured by functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and also respiration, electrodermal activity and photoplethysmograms were measured. Pill weights were measured with an analytical semi-micro balance every second at 0.01 mg accuracy. Video cameras, field RNGs, a thermograph, field IR sensors and an electrostatic voltmeter were set near the balance. The subject was given a profile questionnaire and 5 questionnaires on character traits such as Big Five test. The Uchida-Kraepelin Psychodiagnostic test was also done. Moreover, to allow comparison to other studies, the subject was given a facial recognition test using photos of a young Japanese woman's face as stimuli. No teleportation phenomena were observed. Brain blood flow increased at the subject’s right cerebral hemisphere during the tasks. Activated areas were similar to those during facial recognition tests. Only one of the field RNGs showed a significant deviation during the experimental period. Electrostatic voltmeter measurements suggested that the electric charge of her body was disturbed slightly during tasks. Based on her results of psychological tests, the subject’s personality was evaluated as ordinary, and not special.

OBJECTIVES:
We have examined the specificity of face recognition networks in relation to other object recognition modules in normal subjects. In particular, we addressed a current challenge in cognitive neuroscience by using a novel paradigm that allowed for an explicit separation of the neural correlates of the sensory, perceptual and motor components in holistic perceptual decision.
This strategy, which was anchored on a well defined neurochronometry of cognitive processes helped elucidate the contribution of different regions in the visual stream and insular networks in perceptual decision making. The emergence of holistic percepts occurred in the absence of change in local saliency cues. This allowed for assessing mechanisms of global perceptual awareness irrespective of changes in local sensory evidence.
METHODS:
We used Event Related Potential and fMRI measures and techniques to study response invariance properties of object processing networks, in particular 3D abstract objects and faces were also tested. We have also studied oculomotor responses to emotional faces in normal subjects and Huntington disease (carriers, relative or already with the disease), using calibrated stimuli modified from the FEEST database. Perceptual correlates of holistic object processing in normal subjects and neurodevelopmental conditions were also studied using “Mooney” and hierarchical stimuli. Finally, to separate automatic from conscious aspects of emotional processing of faces, we used a skin conductance (SCR) measurement approach, in relation of online rating of arousal and valence of facial emotions (calibrated in comparison with pictures taken from the International Affective Picture Scale).
RESULTS:
Besides sensory, decision, accumulator and motor processing areas, our study identified hybrid areas in the high-level visual cortex that exhibit traits of both sensory processors and accumulators. We have also found Gamma band neural activity is related to perceptual “Eureka” effects when observing ambiguous dynamic faces/objects. Our data also how a parametric modulation of object-related ERP components by depth range and hence indicate a clear interaction between the depth of 3D object perception and object-related ERP signals across dorsal and ventral streams. Concerning afective processing we have found that duration explains modulations of SCRs better than awareness levels. This suggests that the SCR is not a specific measure for threat detection under unaware conditions but that it is dependent on conscious processing and higher cognitive functions. Finally, our work suggests further links of the episodic memory system to the default network and a differential recruitment of striatal circuits and dependence of hippocampal deactivation on the type of attentional load.
CONCLUSIONS:
We have established a clear and simultaneous separation between sensory, perceptual and motor components in perceptual decision and affective processing .

It has been suggested that familiar and unfamiliar faces employ different processing mechanisms with familiar faces recognised via an invariant structural code and unfamiliar faces from the pictorial codes contained within an image of a face (Bruce and Young, 1986 British Journal of Psychology77305-327). Recent research has suggested however that perhaps all faces, including familiar faces are recognised through pictorial coding (Longmore, Liu and Young, 2008 Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance3477-100). We present a series of experiments showing that when recognition across viewpoints (eg full-face to profile) of a face is required, recognition does indeed appear to be tied to the images studied. However, using the same experimental paradigm, evidence from ERPs indicates that there might be some degree of facilitation in learning two viewpoints (frontal and profile) when recognition on a previously unseen view (three-quarter) is required compared to learning a single view. This suggests that some kind of structural information is being extracted during learning that facilitates recognition from novel views. It would appear that whilst the behavioural data indicates a predominately pictorial basis for the recognition of newly learnt faces, neuro-correlates suggest greater levels of invariance.

Bruce (1982) was one of the first authors to find that familiar faces are easily recognized after changes of pose and expression and that recognition of unfamiliar faces is not equally independent of those changes. Familiar faces are usually associated with a more robust structural configuration than unfamiliar faces, therefore their recognition occurs even in the presence of image transformations. Familiar face processing is believed to be mediated by structural representations of the face, that may not be present for unfamiliar faces. Learning two views (two different viewpoints) of the same face may facilitate the formation of a structural code, as opposed to learning only one view, which may result in the formation of only a pictorial code for the face. This project aims to investigate the way in which new faces are learned, using for that purpose an extensive familiarisation procedure (similar to the one used by Longmore et al., 2008). This technique includes an exposure phase, a training phase and a test phase. In the exposure phase, we present target faces in the frontal, profile and three-quarter views. During the training phase, target faces are presented ten times, associated with a name that the participant must learn in order to become familiarized. In the test phase, the participant performs a recognition task where he must discriminate between target faces and distractors. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) to assess implicit recognition measures and investigate the possible formation of structural codes. However, neither the behavioural measures, neither the psycophysiological measures provided evidence for the formation of structural codes associated with the learning of new faces. Possibly, it is necessary to learn more than two views of the same face for structural codes to emerge.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

The authors tested a famous Chinese psychic (female, 40 years old) during psychokinesis tasks “teleportation”. Targets were vitamin pills on an electric balance or in a bottle. The subject tried to teleport the pills in free style tests for 30-45 min. During the tasks, her brain blood flow was measured by functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and also respiration, electrodermal activity and photoplethysmograms were measured. Pill weights were measured with an analytical semi-micro balance every second at 0.01 mg accuracy. Video cameras, field RNGs, a thermograph, field IR sensors and an electrostatic voltmeter were set near the balance. The subject was given a profile questionnaire and 5 questionnaires on character traits such as Big Five test. The Uchida-Kraepelin Psychodiagnostic test was also done. Moreover, to allow comparison to other studies, the subject was given a facial recognition test using photos of a young Japanese woman's face as stimuli. No teleportation phenomena were observed. Brain blood flow increased at the subject’s right cerebral hemisphere during the tasks. Activated areas were similar to those during facial recognition tests. Only one of the field RNGs showed a significant deviation during the experimental period. Electrostatic voltmeter measurements suggested that the electric charge of her body was disturbed slightly during tasks. Based on her results of psychological tests, the subject’s personality was evaluated as ordinary, and not special.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
It has been suggested that familiar and unfamiliar faces employ different processing mechanisms with familiar faces recognised via an invariant structural code and unfamiliar faces from the pictorial codes contained within an image of a face [Bruce and Young, 1986, British Journal of Psychology, 77, 305-327]. Recent research has suggested however that perhaps all faces, including familiar faces are recognised through pictorial coding [Longmore, Liu and Young, 2008, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 34, 77-100]. We present a series of experiments showing that when recognition across viewpoints (e.g. full-face to profile) of a face is required, recognition does indeed appear to be tied to the images studied. However, using the same experimental paradigm, evidence from ERPs indicates that there might be some degree of facilitation in learning two viewpoints (frontal and profile) when recognition on a previously unseen view (three-quarter) is required compared to learning a single view. This suggests that some kind of structural information is being extracted during learning that facilitates recognition from novel views. It would appear that whilst the behavioural data indicates a predominately pictorial basis for the recognition of newly learnt faces, neuro-correlates suggest greater levels of invariance.

Previous studies demonstrated that familiar faces generate larger skin-conductance responses (SCRs) than unfamiliar faces. This study tested the potential benefit of learning novel faces in two viewpoints when recognition from an unseen viewpoint is required, using SCRs as an index of covert recognition. Participants underwent a thorough learning procedure where they saw novel faces either in one or two viewpoints (frontal, profile or both) and were tested for recognition in the seen and unseen (three-quarters) viewpoints. No difference in SCRs was found for recognition in the three-quarter viewpoint when faces were learned both in frontal and profile views. This suggests that no structural code is being formed during the learning process, which would facilitate recognition from an unseen viewpoint.

Este estudo pretendeu testar se a aprendizagem de uma face em dois pontos de vista (frontal e perfil) contribui para a formação de códigos estruturais que poderão facilitar o reconhecimento numa posição não vista anteriormente (3/4), por comparação com a aprendizagem de uma só vista da face. Verificou-se uma modulação da onda N170 na condição ¾, em que caras aprendidas apenas numa posição geraram amplitudes mais negativas do que caras aprendidas em duas posições. Este resultado é compatível com um efeito de facilitação da aprendizagem de duas vistas quando é necessário o reconhecimento num ponto de vista desconhecido, sugerindo a extração de algum tipo de informação estrutural.

In face processing tasks, prior presentation of internal facial features, when compared with external ones, facilitates the recognition of subsequently displayed familiar faces. In a previous ERP study (Olivares & Iglesias, 2010) we found a visibly larger N400-like effect when identity mismatch familiar faces were preceded by internal features, as compared to prior presentation of external ones. In the present study we contrasted the processing of familiar and unfamiliar faces in the face-feature matching task to assess whether the so-called “internal features advantage” relies mainly on the use of stored face-identity-related information or if it might operate independently from stimulus familiarity. Our participants (N = 24) achieved better performance with internal features as primes and, significantly, with familiar faces. Importantly, ERPs elicited by identity mismatch complete faces displayed a negativity around 300–600 msec which was clearly enhanced for familiar faces primed by internal features when compared with the other experimental conditions. Source reconstruction showed incremented activity elicited by familiar stimuli in both posterior (ventral occipitotemporal) and more anterior (parahippocampal (ParaHIP) and orbitofrontal) brain regions. The activity elicited by unfamiliar stimuli was, in general, located in more posterior regions. Our findings suggest that the activation of multiple neural codes is required for optimal individuation in face-feature matching and that a cortical network related to long-term information for face-identity processing seems to support the internal feature effect.

INTRODUCCIÓN:
La percepción y reconocimiento de caras requiere el acceso y recuperación de múltiples tipos de información de la memoria a largo plazo. Los correlatos neurofisiológicos de estos procesos son utilizados para analizar el procesamiento de información puramente visual y el procesamiento de información de naturaleza verbal-semántica asociada a las caras (la profesión y el nombre propio).
OBJETIVOS:
Mediante un diseño intrasujeto se compararon las respuestas cerebrales relativas al procesamiento de las representaciones visuales y semánticas de las caras con las relativas a otros objetos visuales y a palabras comunes, a fin de analizar el patrón de actividad cerebral durante el procesamiento de múltiples dominios de información. Pacientes/Sujetos y métodos. Estudiantes universitarios fueron familiarizados durante tres días consecutivos con caras, unas con y otras sin información verbal-semántica asociada. Posteriormente se registraron los potenciales evocados en seis tareas paradigmáticas del potencial evocado N400, diferentes en cuanto al dominio de información comprometido: visual facial pura, visual facial semántica, transdominio facial-profesión, profesión-nombre, objetos y palabras.
RESULTADOS:
Las respuestas observadas en estas tareas diferían en el patrón de activación neural, destacándose ante las caras un predominio de activación en la región temporal posterior derecha, mientras que las tareas ante objetos y palabras comunes conllevaron un patrón de activación localizado en regiones más anteriores. La actividad ante profesiones-nombres tuvo una distribución similar a la obtenida ante los estímulos faciales.
CONCLUSIÓN:
Los patrones de activación neural subyacentes al procesamiento de caras ponen en evidencia mecanismos “top-down” que actúan con relativa independencia de la naturaleza del estímulo.

Hypnotic amnesia is a functional dissociation from awareness during which information from specific neural processes is unavailable to consciousness. We test the proposal that changes in topographic patterns of cortical oscillations in upper-alpha (10–12?Hz) band selectively inhibit the recall of memories during hypnotic amnesia by blocking availability of locally processed information at specific points in retrieval. Participants were prescreened for high or low hypnotic susceptibility. Following hypnotic induction, participants were presented with a series of 60 face stimuli and were required to identify affective expressions. Participants received a suggestion for amnesia for these faces. They were then presented with a set of 30 old and 30 new faces and identified each as old or new. Amnesia suggestion was lifted and recall tested using the remaining 30 old faces and another 30 new faces. Exact Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography source analyses are reported for 64 channel event-related electroencephalogram recorded from highs showing reversible amnesia to old faces. For high-susceptible participants, the amnesia suggestion significantly increased old faces wrongly identified while for low-susceptible participants amnesia suggestion increased the new faces wrongly identified. There were no differences between high- and low-susceptible participants following reversal of the suggestion. For previously seen faces which were wrongly identified, compared to new faces correctly identified, (late) evoked upper-alpha is significantly higher in right BA7 in a region implicated in top-down executive control to assist recall of visual information. Lagged nonlinear connectivity between cortical sources in upper-alpha in the same condition showed significantly increased connectivity between right BA34 (parahippocampal gyrus) and right BAs 7, 20 and 22. Integration between these regions is essential for recall of recent faces. During amnesia, spatial and temporal coordination of upper-alpha appears to suppress integrated functioning of these regions (hence recall). These patterns were absent after reversal of amnesia suggestion.

Research investigating the effect of lighting and viewpoint changes on unfamiliar and newly learnt faces has revealed that such recognition is highly image dependent and that changes in either of these leads to poor recognition accuracy. Three experiments are reported to extend these findings by examining the effect of apparent age on the recognition of newly learnt faces. Experiment 1 investigated the ability to generalize to novel ages of a face after learning a single image. It was found that recognition was best for the learnt image with performance falling the greater the dissimilarity between the study and test images. Experiments 2 and 3 examined whether learning two images aids subsequent recognition of a novel image. The results indicated that interpolation between two studied images (Experiment 2) provided some additional benefit over learning a single view, but that this did not extend to extrapolation (Experiment 3). The results from all studies suggest that recognition was driven primarily by pictorial codes and that the recognition of faces learnt from a limited number of sources operates on stored images of faces as opposed to more abstract, structural, representations.

The challenging computational problem of perceiving dynamic faces "in the wild" goes unresolved because most research focuses on easier questions about static photograph perception. This literature conceptualizes face representation as a dissimilarity-based "face space", with axes that describe the dimensions of static images. Some versions express positions in face space relative to a central tendency (norm). Are facial movements represented like this? We tested for representations that accord with an a priori hypothesized motion-based face space by experimentally manipulating faces' motion-based dissimilarity. Because we caricatured movements, we could test for representations of dissimilarity from a motion-based norm. Behaviorally, participants perceived these caricatured expressions as convincing and recognizable. Moreover, as expected, caricature enhanced perceived dissimilarity between facial expressions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging showed that occipitotemporal brain responses, including face-selective and motion-sensitive areas, reflect this face space. This evidence converged across methods including analysis of univariate mean responses (which additionally exhibited norm-based responses), repetition suppression and representational similarity analysis. This accumulated evidence for "representational geometry" shows how perception and visual brain responses to facial dynamics reflect representations of movement-based dissimilarity spaces, including explicit computation of distance from a norm movement.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
PURPOSE
Insight is currently considered to be responsible for 20% to 40% of the cases of ineffective obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment. As 15% to 36% of patients with OCD have reduced insight, we aimed to identify some of the clinical determinants of insight in OCD.
RESULTS
Our sample consisted of 57 OCD patients, of which 34 men (59%) and 23 women (41%). All individuals completed a two-phase interview consisting of a clinical assessment, emotional awareness evaluation and insight measurement, using the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale (BABS). The insight score correlated significantly with negative emotion recognition (p < 0.0001) and empathic concern (p = 0.003).
MAJOR CONCLUSIONS
Our results support the hypothesis that insight in OCD is related to emotional awareness, specifically emotion recognition and empathic concern. Future research should investigate the extent to which poor insight and impaired emotional awareness can be modified by psychological or pharmacological therapies and whether this will enhance treatment response.
