Psychological aspects of the alien contact experience
Publication year: 2008
URL:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18635162
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous research has shown that people reporting contact with aliens, known as "experiencers", appear to have a different psychological profile compared to control participants. They show higher levels of dissociativity, absorption, paranormal belief and experience, and possibly fantasy proneness. They also appear to show greater susceptibility to false memories as assessed using the Deese/Roediger-McDermott technique. The present study reports an attempt to replicate these previous findings as well as assessing tendency to hallucinate and self-reported incidence of sleep paralysis in a sample of 19 UK-based experiencers and a control sample matched on age and gender. Experiencers were found to show higher levels of dissociativity, absorption, paranormal belief, paranormal experience, self-reported psychic ability, fantasy proneness, tendency to hallucinate, and self-reported incidence of sleep paralysis. No significant differences were found between the groups in terms of susceptibility to false memories. Implications of the results are discussed and suggestions are made for future avenues of research.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The research on false memories is one of the major topics in the human memory domain. In the 90’s several paradigms emerged to study the extension and variability of that phenomena. The two main experimental
procedures were the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm (Roediger & McDermott, 1995) and the repetitive suggestion paradigm proposed by Loftus and Pickrell (1995).
The DRM paradigm consists in the presentation of lists of 15 words related with a non-presented critical lure (e.g., mad, fear, hate, rage, temper, fury, ire, wrath, happy, fight, hatred, mean, calm, emotion, enrage, are words related with the critical word anger). Results showed that the participants recalled the non-presented critical word as much as the words of the middle of the list (35%-43%) – asymptotic zone of the serial position curve. Results also showed that the amount of false recognition of the critical non-presented word was about 83%. The other paradigm consists in the presentation of true and false episodes (occurred between 4 to 8 years old) during an interview with young adults. The procedure implies the presentation of three true episodes (proposed by the participant’s parents) and a false episode - lost in a supermarket - that never occurred in their life (confirmed by the participant’s parents).
Results showed that the production of false recall is quite small in the first interview. But in a second interview, administered two or three weeks later, the percentage of false recall of the episode increased. False memories are related with participant’s dissociation experience and personality characteristics.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
Although there are sound reasons to predict a positive correlation between susceptibility to false memories and level of paranormal belief, it is also the case that any tendency on the part of respondents to respond consistently in a positive or negative manner regardless of the question would also produce such a pattern of results. Two experiments are reported investigating the latter possibility.
METHODS:
Experiment 1 involved asking 119 respondents to complete a “News Coverage Questionnaire” (NCQ) asking for details of memories of footage for various dramatic news events. However, one of the items in the current version was entirely fictitious. Respondents also completed the Australian Sheep-Goat Scale (ASGS) to measure paranormal belief and the Creative Experiences Questionnaire (CEQ) to measure fantasy proneness. Experiment 2 involved asking 77 respondents to complete a version of the NCQ in which all items were real news items but one had not been caught on camera. Respondents also completed the ASGS, the Anomalous Experiences Inventory (AEI), and the Acquiescence Bias Scale (ABS).
RESULTS:
In Experiment 1, none of the respondents claimed to remember the fictitious news event. A significant correlation was found between paranormal belief and fantasy proneness. In Experiment 2, 35% of participants reported having seen non-existent footage. These respondents scored significantly higher than others on the ASGS and the Experience sub-scale of the AEI. Scores on the ABS did not correlate with those on the ASGS, the AEI, nor with the tendency to report having seen the non-existent footage.
DISCUSSION:
The fact that no respondent reported a memory for the fictitious event suggests that respondents reporting memories for non-existent footage in other studies were not doing so simply as a result of acquiescence bias. Experiment 2 replicated previous research showing a correlation between susceptibility to false memories and paranormal belief but also that this was not due to acquiescence bias.
CONCLUSION:
The correlation between susceptibility to false memories and paranormal belief appears not to be due to acquiescence bias.

Investigating DRM false memories susceptibility in near-death experiencers
Publication year: 2016

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Literature devoted to the cognitive functioning of individuals who lived a near-death experience (NDErs) is very limited. This study examines their susceptibility to false memories using the Deese–Roediger–McDermott paradigm (DRM; Roediger&McDermott, 1995). Specifically, 20 NDErs and 19 healthy volunteers matched on age, education and time since accident were presented with DRM lists for a recall task during which they were asked to assign “Remember/Know/Guess” judgements (Tulving, 1985) to their responses. Results showed that NDErs and volunteers were equally likely to recall studied items, to falsely recall critical lures and obtained similar rates of associated illusory recollection. These findings are discussed in light of the current theories of false memory production and accounts of NDE.

BIAL Foundation Archive
Start date: 1994
History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A variety of evidence demonstrates that memory is a reconstructive process prone to errors and distortions. However, the complex relationship between memory encoding, strength of memory reactivation, and the likelihood of reporting true or false memories has yet to be ascertained. We address this issue in a setting that mimics a real-life experience: We asked participants to take a virtual museum tour in which they freely explored artworks included in the exhibit, while we measured the participants’ spontaneous viewing time of each explored artwork. In a following memory reactivation phase, participants were presented again with explored artworks (reactivated targets), followed by novel artworks not belonging to the same exhibit (activated lures). For each of these objects, participants provided a reliving rating that indexed the strength of memory reactivation. In the final memory recognition phase, participants underwent an old/new memory task, involving reactivated vs. baseline (i.e., non-reactivated) targets, and activated and baseline lures. The results showed that those targets that were spontaneously viewed for a longer amount of time were more frequently correctly recognized. This pattern was particularly true for reactivated targets associated with greater memory strength (a higher reliving rating). Paradoxically, however, lures that were presented after targets associated with higher reliving ratings in the reactivation phase were more often erroneously recognized as artworks encountered during the tour. This latter finding indicates that memory intrusions, irrespective of the viewing time, are more likely to take place and be incorporated into true memories when the strength of target memory is higher.
