    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.
  • To truncate your search expression, use the $ character
  • You can filter the results of your search by a date or date range, filling the appropriate boxes.

Electrophysiological correlates of familiarity in recognition memory and exclusion tasks
Publication year: 2006

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
ERPs were acquired in the test phases of three memory experiments, where three classes of word were presented. These were: (i) words encountered in a prior study phase (studied words), (ii) words presented at test for the first time (new words), and (iii) new words repeated after a lag of 7-9 intervening words (repeated test words). In experiments 1 and 2, participants were asked to respond on one key to studied words and on another to new as well as to repeated test words. In experiment 3, a binary response was again required, but in this case repeated test and studied words were assigned to the same key. In each experiment, the principal focus for analysis was on the differences between the ERPs at mid-frontal electrode locations from 300 to 500 ms post-stimulus that were associated with incorrect responses to studied words (misses) and correct responses to new words. It has been proposed that relatively greater positivity for studied than for new words at this locus reflects the greater familiarity of studied than of unstudied words. ERPs elicited by misses were reliably more positive-going than those elicited by correct rejections in experiments 1 and 2 only. These findings support the link between this modulation of the electrical record and familiarity in so far as the designs of the experiments lead to the prediction that the average level of familiarity associated with misses should be higher in the first two experiments than in the third. In combination with findings in other studies, these data support dual-process accounts of recognition memory.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The acceleration of the internal clock promoted by arousal of emotional stimuli has been suggested as the mechanism underlying the effects of emotion in time perception (i.e., time overestimation) outweighing the attentional effects (i.e., loss of temporal information) of processing such stimuli. However there is no empirical demonstration that these are indeed the explanatory factors of the influence of emotion on time perception, and even if this is how these factors interfere in time judgments. In this project we developed a set of experiments to disentangle these factors. We used physiological measures, able to provide independent indexes without disrupting the time estimation task, and examine mediation effects of these emotional dimensions on time perception. Additionally, we contrast the effects of emotions with the effects of other non-emotional feelings, familiarity and perceptual fluency in order to circumscribe the underlying processes. Our studies generally suggest that duration judgments were affected by emotional arousal, though this effect seems to be moderated by emotion type, valence, response delay, and arousal manipulation.
Nevertheless psychophysiological mediation analysis reveals a more complex process of time processing of emotion stimuli than predicted by ‘internal clock’ models. In addition, our studies imply that the feeling of stimulus familiarity and fluency is associated with a time overestimation. This effect is moderated by attention, also in an unpredicted way. Our results suggest surprisingly similar mechanisms on how the perceptual fluency, familiarity, and emotions influence the perception of time, and that somehow refutes the prevailing explanations in the literature. Together these results indicate a conjugation between the perception of temporal units and procedural changes of the stimuli, i.e., that temporal and nontemporal information are combined in the temporal estimates of emotional stimuli.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The presence of an emotion in a human face increases its perceived duration (Droit-Volet et al., 2004). Our study extends this effect to a new set of emotions (happiness, fear, anger) and test the impact that familiarity may exert on it. Participants estimated the duration (between 400-1600 ms) of neutral and emotional faces by comparing them to the extreme durations (short and long) previously learned. The analysis of bisection-points and psychophysical-functions suggest a replication of general overestimation of emotional faces. As expected, familiarity moderates this effect, not because it influences emotional estimations, but because it bias estimations of neutral-faces durations.

Efeito da familiaridade na percepção temporal de faces humanas

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
INTRODUCTION:
Internal-clock and attention-gate timing models (e.g. Gibbon et al, 1984) suggest that arousal and attention bias time processing. Affective stimuli by definition promote arousal and are known to capture attention towards them. These two factors have been shown to have opposite effects in time estimation (eg. Burle & Casini, 2001). In this project we developed a set of experiments to understand how these and other properties of affective stimuli impact time-perception. Physiological measures were used in order to assess those properties without disrupting the time estimation task, and to be able to approach their mediational effects. In addition, we approach non-emotional feelings such as familiarity and fluency. The focus of affect as a subjective experience of positivity and negativity associated to different levels of arousal provides a general framework to this work.
METHODS:
Using bisection tasks, timing scales and time reproduction, participants estimated the duration (0.4 to 1.6 s) of stimuli, manipulated in different ways: (1) negative and positive emotional faces (valence) with low and high expressivity (arousal); (2) the arousal level of both the stimuli to be evaluated and of a prime (that activate independently the arousal of participants); (3) level of familiarity and fluency with low and high attentional resources. Heart rate (HR) deceleration elicit by emotional stimuli onset was measured as an attention index (i.e., orientation response); facial EMG activity of Corrugator Supercilii (CS) and Zigomatic Major (ZM) muscles and frontal EEG alpha power asymmetry were measured as valence indexes; and skin conductance (SC) activity as an arousal index.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:
All studies suggest duration judgments to be affected by arousal. This effect was moderated by: emotion, valence and temporal task. Psychohysiological measures support all our manipulations and the mediational analysis reveals a more complex process of time processing of emotion stimuli than predicted by ‘internal clock’ model. In addition, our studies imply that feelings of familiarity/fluency of processing promote time overestimation; the effect is, in an unpredicted way, moderated by attention. All results are discussed considering the “internal-clock model” and alternative approaches (attributional, perceptual and cognitive serial changes, and embodiment cognition).

Attractiveness enhances the perceived familiarity of unfamiliar faces but not familiar faces
Publication year: 2012
URL:
http://www.perceptionweb.com/abstract.cgi?id=v120421
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous research has indicated that the perceived familiarity of an unfamiliar face is positively correlated with the attractiveness of the face and that brief exposure to previously unfamiliar faces increases the strength of this correlation (Peskin and Newell, 2004 Perception33147-157). In addition, the familiarity ratings of even highly familiar faces are influenced by the expression of the face with positive expressions yielding higher familiarity ratings (Lander and Metcalfe, 2007 Memory1563-69). In the study reported, we attempted to establish whether the perceived familiarity of both familiar and unfamiliar faces is affected by the attractiveness of the face. Participants were shown four groups of faces (familiar attractive, familiar less-attractive, unfamiliar attractive, unfamiliar less-attractive) and were asked to rate each face for familiarity. The results indicated that attractiveness had an effect on the perceived familiarity of unfamiliar faces with attractive unfamiliar faces being rated significantly more familiar than less-attractive faces. No difference was found for the familiarity ratings of familiar faces. The results indicate that unlike expressions, attractiveness does not influence the perceived familiarity of familiar faces. It is suggested that non-changeable aspects of a face (such as attractiveness) do not influence familiarity once a face is sufficiently familiar.

Modes of processing and challenge and threat in the presence or absence of others
Publication year: 2011
Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Within a comprehensive perspective of human behavior we present data that suggests that cognitive processing is accompanied by specific motivational states of challenge and threat, being this effect amplified by basic social contexts, like mere presence. Our framework brings together evidence from social cognition and psychophysiology and relates it with a classic effect of social psychology. Specifically, we integrated the familiarity as a regulation mechanism model (Garcia-Marques, 1999; Garcia-Marques & Mackie, 2001, 2007) with the biopsychossocial model of challenge and threat (Tomaka et. al, 1991; Blascovich, 2008), within a social facilitation setting. This integrated approach originated two main assumptions that were tested in this investigation. The first one derives from the assumption that familiarity moderates information-processing modes (Garcia-Marques & Mackie, 2001, 2007) and that familiarity increases psychophysiological state of challenge (Blascovich et al, 1993; 1999). Based on this, we hypothesized that non-analytic processing would be associated to cardiovascular challenge. We tested this hypothesis on experiment 1 using a persuasion paradigm. Participants assigned to a familiar or unfamiliar condition were asked to read a strong or weak persuasive message and then asked to list their thoughts to a video-camera while their physiological responses were recorded. As expected, results demonstrated that those, assigned to a familiar condition, generated thoughts that reflect non-analytic processing and exhibited a cardiovascular pattern of challenge. Conversely, those assigned to an unfamiliar condition generated the types of thoughts associated to analytic processing and exhibited a cardiovascular pattern of threat. Based on these results, we raised the subsidiary hypothesis that challenge could have a direct impact on information-processing. Thus, on experiment 2 we eliminated the familiarity path and induced challenge and threat prior to information-processing task. Our results made the previously found association clearer. Participants assigned to a challenge condition processed persuasive information non-analytically, whereas participants assigned to a threat condition processed it more analytically. The second assumption derived from our framework suggests an amplification role played by the presence of others. Based on Blascovich et al.´work (1999) we expected that the effects of challenge and threat on information-processing to be more strongly observed when participants perform in the presence of other, than when they perform alone. To test this hypothesis, we replicated experiment 1 and 2 adding a manipulation of presence vs. absence of others. Results seem to support an amplification effect, such as the effects observed in the previous experiments were only significant when others were present in the experimental situation, but not when participants were alone. These results are interpreted in terms of the cognitive characteristics associated with challenge that typically trigger non-analytic processing, namely accessibility and ease. Further interpretations are also provided in order to explore if the stimulus that signals the cognitive system to engage in non-analytic processing is a pure cognitive or motivational one. Implications for the FARM model, the BPS model and social facilitation are discussed within an integrated perspective of human behavior.

Attractiveness enhances the perceived familiarity of unfamiliar faces but not familiar faces

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous research has indicated that the perceived familiarity of an unfamiliar face is positively correlated with the attractiveness of the face and that brief exposure to previously unfamiliar faces increases the strength of this correlation [Peskin and Newell, 2004, Perception, 33, 147-157]. In addition, the familiarity ratings of even highly familiar faces are influenced by the expression of the face with positive expressions yielding higher familiarity ratings [Lander and Metcalfe, 2007, Memory, 15, 63-69].

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
It has been suggested that familiar and unfamiliar faces employ different processing mechanisms with familiar faces recognised via an invariant structural code and unfamiliar faces from the pictorial codes contained within an image of a face [Bruce and Young, 1986, British Journal of Psychology, 77, 305-327]. Recent research has suggested however that perhaps all faces, including familiar faces are recognised through pictorial coding [Longmore, Liu and Young, 2008, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 34, 77-100]. We present a series of experiments showing that when recognition across viewpoints (e.g. full-face to profile) of a face is required, recognition does indeed appear to be tied to the images studied. However, using the same experimental paradigm, evidence from ERPs indicates that there might be some degree of facilitation in learning two viewpoints (frontal and profile) when recognition on a previously unseen view (three-quarter) is required compared to learning a single view. This suggests that some kind of structural information is being extracted during learning that facilitates recognition from novel views. It would appear that whilst the behavioural data indicates a predominately pictorial basis for the recognition of newly learnt faces, neuro-correlates suggest greater levels of invariance.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND
The mid-frontal ERP old/new effect has two accounts: it indexes familiarity – a graded memory strength signal supporting old/new judgments, or it indexes conceptual priming - a performance facilitation for events due to pre-exposure to semantically related events.
AIM
The aim was to contribute to understanding of the sensitivities of ERPs to memory processes. This is important, because understanding their sensitivity is critical if ERPs are to be used to investigate how and when different memory processes are used, and how they are compromised during ageing and in disease states. The specific aim here was to investigate whether the mid-frontal ERP old/new effect indexes familiarity or conceptual priming.
METHOD
Participants saw words one at a time. All were repeated twice. In Exp1 participants made a living/non-living judgment to words. In Exp2 they did this for half of them, making old/new judgments to the remainder. ERPs were acquired locked to word onset and analysed for first presentations and repetitions (both experiments) and for words attracting correct old/new judgments (Exp2 only).
RESULTS
Priming - faster reaction times for repetitions than first presentations - was similar for both repetitions in both experiments. Old/new recognition was better for the second than the first repetition. The mid-frontal effect was similar for both repeats in Exp2 for words with correct old/new judgments. At the same sites the repetition effect for both repeats was also similar.
CONCLUSIONS
Mid-frontal activity from 300-500ms mirrored the priming data: there was little change between first and second repetitions. Because of this, and because this activity did not track old/new accuracy in Exp2, the data are consistent with a priming account of the mid-frontal effect. In subsequent work we will increase the difference in old/new recognition accuracies between first and second repeats to rule out a lack of sensitivity as an explanation for the lack of correspondence between the ERP and recognition memory data.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In this paper we present the norms for a set of 50 images of animals that were evaluated by a total sample of 78 college students regarding the following dimensions: valence, familiarity, fear, disgust and dangerousness. Ten categories of animals were selected based on the assumption of their negativity and association to emotions such as fear and disgust and included images of animals likely to be found either in a domestic (i.e., bee, gecko, centipede, mouse and cockroach) or non-domestic context (i.e., snake, scorpion, lizard, bat and tarantula). Each image was evaluated by a minimum of 38 participants. Altogether, results regarding the 10 categories suggest that: (a) all may be classified as negative, (b) seven are perceived as familiar, as associated to high fear and/or disgust and (c) four are perceived as dangerous. Here we present the evaluations obtained by each animal category (and exemplar) in each dimension with the goal of contributing to future research that require the use of negative stimuli associated to fear or disgust.
