The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The relevance of psychophysiological measurements for affective computing and emotion analysis applications has been widely recognized. However, and although several authors have studied the informative content of parameters derived from cardiovascular and other modalities, feature extraction remains an open topic in the field. This is particularly relevant in scenarios where the autonomic nervous system triggering stimuli are unknown. In this paper, we analyze a set of features extracted from multimodal biosignal data, applicable to the assessment of psychophysiological load in unconstrained settings. Experimental evaluation is performed on real world data, collected both from control subjects and subjects with a strong clinical background, in a context of questionnaire-based clinical history reporting. The devised feature set has shown promising properties, making it prone to complement the more traditional measurements.

Several studies have demonstrated that error-related neuronal signatures can be successfully detected and used to improve the performance of brain-computer interfaces. However, this has been tested mainly in well-controlled environments and based on temporal features, such as the amplitude of event-related potentials. In this study, we propose a classification algorithm combining frequency features and a weighted SVM to detect the neuronal signatures of errors committed in a complex saccadic go/no-go task. We follow the hypothesis that frequency features yield better discrimination performance in complex tasks, generalize better, and require fewer pre-processing steps. When combining temporal and frequency features, we achieved a balanced classification accuracy of 75% - almost the same as using only frequency features. On the other hand, when using only temporal features, the balanced accuracy decreased to 66%. These findings show that subjects' performance can be automatically detected based on frequency features of error-related neuronal signatures. Additionally, our results revealed that features computed in the pre-response time contribute to the discrimination between correct and erroneous responses, which suggests the existence of error-related patterns even before response execution.

Identifying band-specific features -such as amplitude and latency/duration-from event-related desynchronization (ERD) patterns in MEG/EEG time-frequency representations can enhance our understanding of how the brain processes tasks and influences behavior. However, these features can be affected by potential noise, intrinsic instabilities, and inter-trial variability, which makes it challenging to analyze ERD dynamics accurately when multiple peaks with similar amplitudes emerge in the ERD pattern. To address these issues, we introduce SmartERD, a new pipeline designed to extract dynamic ERD features while considering ERD variability. SmartERD automatically estimates a band-specific pseudo-confidence interval around the absolute ERD peak, inspired by uncertainty propagation principles. It then identifies the first local ERD peak within this interval -representing the first component of the induced oscillatory response- and automatically extracts its features. A key advantage of this approach is that it extracts the latency of a common reference point for all subjects -the first peak response after a trigger- facilitating more consistent comparisons. We validated SmartERD through realistic simulations that mimic different trial numbers. Results showed that SmartERD's estimates are closer to the ground truth across various noise levels compared to standard methods. Additionally, when applied to experimental MEG data, SmartERD demonstrated a better ability to capture individual differences in ERD dynamics, thanks to the selection of a common reference latency. Overall, we propose SmartERD as a valuable tool for extracting meaningful features from oscillatory dynamics, with the potential to improve the analysis of brain-behavior relationships in complex cognitive tasks.
