The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A critical requirement for research using model organisms is an appropriate, well-defined and consistent diet. There is currently no complete chemically defined (holidic) diet available for Drosophila melanogaster. We describe a holidic medium that is equal in performance to an oligidic diet optimized for adult fecundity and lifespan. It is also sufficient to support development over multiple generations, but at a reduced rate. During seven years of experiments, the holidic diet yielded more consistent experimental outcomes than oligidic food for adult fitness traits. Furthermore, nutrients and drugs are more accessible to flies in holidic medium and, similar to dietary restriction on oligidic food, amino acid dilution increases fly lifespan. We also report amino acid specific effects on food choice behavior and that folic acid from the microbiota is sufficient for development. These insights could not be gained using oligidic or meridic diets.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Food ingestion is one of the defining behaviours of all animals, but its quantification and analysis remain challenging. This is especially the case for feeding behaviour in small, genetically tractable animals such as Drosophila melanogaster. Here, we present a method based on capacitive measurements, which allows the detailed, automated and high-throughput quantification of feeding behaviour. Using this method, we were able to measure the volume ingested in single sips of an individual, and monitor the absorption of food with high temporal resolution. We demonstrate that flies ingest food by rhythmically extending their proboscis with a frequency that is not modulated by the internal state of the animal. Instead, hunger and satiety homeostatically modulate the microstructure of feeding. These results highlight similarities of food intake regulation between insects, rodents, and humans, pointing to a common strategy in how the nervous systems of different animals control food intake.

Animals choose which macronutrient to eat according to their current internal nutrient and mating status and optimize the
protein to carbohydrate ratio in their diet to maximize their evolutionary fitness in terms of lifetime egg production. In the field it is well accepted that yeast is mainly used by Drosophila melanogaster as a protein and therefore amino acid source but a detailed nutritional analysis of this food source remains hampered by its chemically complexity. To disentangle the different nutritional contributions of yeast on life history traits and feeding behavior we have used a novel holidic medium that is adequate for fly development as well as adult traits, such as behavior, fecundity and lifespan. Using detailed and quantitative behavior analyses of food choice and feeding behavior we show that specifically removing amino acids from the adult diet leads to a foraging phenotype which fully mimics a lack of dietary yeast. Furthermore this effect can be triggered by the lack of single essential amino acids while removing non essential amino acids from the diet has no effect on food choice. Interestingly, flies raised in the absence of yeast preferred yeast when amino acids deprived, suggesting the existence of an innate system for yeast valuation. These data shed light on the exquisite behavioral sensitivity of Drosophila to the lack of single nutritional components and the foraging strategies used to achieve nutrient homeostasis. Our study also exemplifies the power of using a holidic diet for examining nutrient sensitive traits such as nutrient homeostasis.
