Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The present study deals with brain activities using fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy).
First, brain blood flow was measured while guessing a hidden figure (Zenar symbols) in a forced-choice test. Subjects were 14 healthy adult volunteers (8 males, 6 females): average age was 46.6 (SD = 15.2). 1 trial was 3 min. Subjects scored degree of formulation of visual images. Results of 69 trials, spontaneous blood flow change (SBFC) often occurred at the temporal lobe, and at that time the images were formulated clearly. In other words, awareness was more activated. We named it as instantaneous highly activated state of awareness. However, SBFC did not relate to successful clairvoyant task.
Second, brain blood flow of various experts was measured in a free-response test to guess for the invalid parts of the inside of human body or for a small thing hidden in a dark box. Subjects were 11 healthy volunteers (5 males, 6 females): average age was 39.7 (SD = 12.1). Two of them were famous star psychics of Russia and China. Brain activities of star psychics during clairvoyance were not similar to activities of other subjects. The characteristic activated area of star psychics was the prefrontal area although many subjects showed activation of the right temporal lobe. Star psychics seemed to think, not only formulate visual images. In addition, photons were measured around the target thing during the clairvoyant task. However there was no appearance of anomalous photon.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
In a previous study using near-infrared spectroscopy (Yoichi et al, 2002), the authors found spontaneous blood flow change often occurred at both temporal lobes while guessing for hidden figures (clairvoyant condition). This phenomenon was considered to have a relationship to the degree of impression formulation of figures. In the present study, the authors looked at details of the phenomenon. There were 14 participant volunteers. One trial consisted of a 3-minute guessing period and a 3-minute rest period, and 1 run consisted of 3 trials and 69 trials were done in total. The target figure was selected from 5 figures by a pseudo random number function. Then it was displayed on a CRT covered by a gray paper box. After the 3-minute guessing period, subjects gave their answers and degrees of impression formulation (3 degree method). The spontaneous blood flow change at the temporal lobe was observed in 10 trials. The degree of impression formulation was high when the change occurred (p<0.001, one-tail). The change also often occurred when subjects made their responses after guessing although the change did not relate to the degree of impression formulation. Ten guessing results were correct, but this number was not significant. Moreover, 3 of 10 correct trials were obtained when the spontaneous blood flow change occurred although it was not significant (p = 0.06, one-tail). The relationship between the correct response and the spontaneous blood flow change should be researched in further studies.

ABSTRACT:
In a previous study using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (Yoichi et al, 2002), the authors found spontaneous blood flow change often occurred at both temporal lobes while guessing for hidden figures (clairvoyant condition). This phenomenon has a relationship to the degree of impression formulation of figures (Kokubo, et al., 2005). These studies were forced choice tests. In the present study, the authors researched the brain blood flow change in free-response guessing tests chiefly. Subjects were 11 healthy volunteers. Targets were geometric symbols, the inside of human body or a thing in a dark box. Brain blood flow was measured at frontal area and right temporal area while guessing the targets from 3 to 30 minutes. Results, star psychics showed the increase of blood flow at their prefrontal areas, not right temporal lobes. While the other subjects showed the increase of blood flow at their right temporal lobes, not frontal area. In case that the task was to guess the hidden visual targets, the activated areas of the brain of star psychics were different from ones of the other persons.

Brain activity while guessing: Research by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)

SUMMARY:
There are several useful methods to examine brain functions from outside of the body. One of them is fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) which can be used to measure only the cerebral cortex near the scalp (depth: 2-3 cm). fNIRS is non-stressful the same as EEG measurements, so it is a suitable method for sensitive subjects. The present paper deals with 3 topics using fNIRS. First, brain blood flow was measured while guessing a hidden figure in a forced-choice test Spontaneous blood flow change often occurred at the temporal lobe, and awareness was slightly more activated at that time. Second, the cognitive process for human facial expressions was researched. It is said that Japanese are expressionless or vague compared with people of other cultures. Subjects tried to distinguish emotions of vague faces made by a Japanese actress. The task was relatively easy for Japanese while it was difficult for Chinese. Third, brain blood flow of various experts was measured while they were guessing for the invalid parts of the inside of human body or for a small thing hidden in a dark box Brain activities of star psychics during clairvoyance were not similar to activities of other subjects. The authors tested a famous Chinese psychic (female, 40 years old) during psychokinesis tasks “teleportation”. Targets were vitamin pills on an electric balance or in a bottle. The subject tried to teleport the pills in free style tests for 30-45 min. During the tasks, her brain blood flow was measured by functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and also respiration, electrodermal activity and photoplethysmograms were measured. Pill weights were measured with an analytical semi-micro balance every second at 0.01 mg accuracy. Video cameras, field RNGs, a thermograph, field IR sensors and an electrostatic voltmeter were set near the balance. The subject was given a profile questionnaire and 5 questionnaires on character traits such as Big Five test. The Uchida-Kraepelin Psychodiagnostic test was also done. Moreover, to allow comparison to other studies, the subject was given a facial recognition test using photos of a young Japanese woman's face as stimuli. No teleportation phenomena were observed. Brain blood flow increased at the subject’s right cerebral hemisphere during the tasks. Activated areas were similar to those during facial recognition tests. Only one of the field RNGs showed a significant deviation during the experimental period. Electrostatic voltmeter measurements suggested that the electric charge of her body was disturbed slightly during tasks. Based on her results of psychological tests, the subject’s personality was evaluated as ordinary, and not special.

Abstract/Results:
ABSTRACT:
Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive imaging method for measuring brain activities. It is considered as useful to test sensitive subjects or to test some kinds of exercises. In the present paper focusing on results of fNIRS, the authors reviewed their studies on taichi-quan, meditative out-of-body experience (OBE), clairvoyance and metal-bending. Brain blood flow increased at pre-frontal area in taichi-quan, while it decreased there in meditative OBE. In guessing (clairvoyance) tasks, a psychic healer showed the increase of brain blood flow at frontal pole, but other subjects were different. Common non-psychic persons seemed to formulate visual images during clairvoyance tasks and they had a tendency to increase brain blood flow at temporal lobe. Moreover, it was suggested that mechanisms of remote viewing work with Psi Tech's techniques were different from ones of clairvoyance of genius psychics. In metal-bending tasks with brute force of hands, brain blood flow increased extremely at frontal pole. It suggested that some kinds of light exercises could activate brain blood flow at important areas which were considered to relate to psi.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We have challenged the most difficult theme; study on teleportation. Subjects of our study are famous Chinese psychic sisters Mrs. Qiang Wang (W004) & Mrs. Ping Wang (W003). We asked them to move pills on an electric balance without touches. Moreover, we measured their brain blood flow using functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during the task.
Unfortunately, we did not succeed to observe the teleportation phenomena. Moreover, we had a difficulty to execute further studies because Wang sisters claimed that the teleportation task was too difficult for them although they succeeded teleportation tasks in their young age. They had seldom conducted typical psi experiments recently and their recent practices were non-contact healing chiefly. Therefore, we changed the master plan of the study and measured their present bio-PK abilities.
We have two quantitative measuring methods for non-contact healing (a kind of bio-PK). One of them is the gas measurement method, and the other is the biophoton method. We used the gas measurement method, and tried to measure spatial distribution of potential of healing power which is generated around a healer. Results, we succeeded to obtain very interesting data. It was suggested that;
1. A wave-like potential distribution is generated around a subject during a healing task.
2. The potential has symmetry with anisotropy between front-backward and left-rightward direction.
3. The fundamental equation of healing (bio-PK) phenomena is a second order differential equation which is similar to the Schrödinger equation.

Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Brain Activity During PK and Facial Recognition Tasks – Research with near Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The authors tested a famous Chinese psychic (female, 40 years old) during psychokinesis tasks “teleportation”. Targets were vitamin pills on an electric balance or in a bottle. The subject tried to teleport the pills in free style tests for 30-45 min. During the tasks, her brain blood flow was measured by functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and also respiration, electrodermal activity and photoplethysmograms were measured. Pill weights were measured with an analytical semi-micro balance every second at 0.01 mg accuracy. Video cameras, field RNGs, a thermograph, field IR sensors and an electrostatic voltmeter were set near the balance. The subject was given a profile questionnaire and 5 questionnaires on character traits such as Big Five test. The Uchida-Kraepelin Psychodiagnostic test was also done. Moreover, to allow comparison to other studies, the subject was given a facial recognition test using photos of a young Japanese woman's face as stimuli. No teleportation phenomena were observed. Brain blood flow increased at the subject’s right cerebral hemisphere during the tasks. Activated areas were similar to those during facial recognition tests. Only one of the field RNGs showed a significant deviation during the experimental period. Electrostatic voltmeter measurements suggested that the electric charge of her body was disturbed slightly during tasks. Based on her results of psychological tests, the subject’s personality was evaluated as ordinary, and not special.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.

BACKGROUND/AIM
The aim of this work was to investigate the motivational intensity model (MIM) using measures of brain activation. The MIM has been extensively explored using cardiovascular psychophysiology, however the activation of the prefrontal cortex has not been explored in this particular paradigm. The aim of this study was to investigate how cognitive demand in response to working memory load affected activation of the rostral prefrontal cortex (rPFC) under two conditions: (a) control (no reward) and (b) financial reward. It was hypothesised that the presence of reward would enhance rPFC activation but only when cognitive demand was high.
METHODS
40 participants (20 males) volunteered for the mixed-design study where reward group served as a between-participants factor. Cognitive demand was varied by exposing participants to a working memory task (nback) at five levels of difficulty, e.g. 0-back, 1-back, 3-back, 5-back, 7-back. Demand was estimated to be easy (0-back, 1-back), hard (3-back, 5-back) or impossible (7-back). All participants were paid £10 for taking part in the study, but half of the participants were offered an additional monetary reward of £10 that was linked to their performance on the task. Blood oxygenation in the rPFC was captured using a functional near-infrared spectrography (fNIRS) device that covered the forehead region of the participant and monitored BA10.
RESULTS
The results of the study indicated that blood oxygenation in the rPFC was generally higher in the presence of reward. It was also apparent that activation of the rPFC peaked at the 3-back task for participants in the control group, whereas this peak was observed at the 5-back for participants in the reward group.
CONCLUSIONS
The rPFC responded to both cognitive demand and the presence of a reward. This effect was consistent with the MIM where the level of effort invested into a task is influenced by the likelihood of success and the presence of an extrinsic reward.
