BACKGROUND:
An elevated excitation/inhibition ratio has been suggested as one mechanism underpinning autism. An imbalance between cortical excitation and inhibition may manifest itself in electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities in the high frequency range. The aim of this study was to investigate whether beta and gamma range EEG abnormalities are characteristic for young boys with autism (BWA).
METOHDS:
EEG was recorded during sustained visual attention in two independent samples of BWA from Moscow and Gothenburg, aged 3 to 8 years, and in age matched typically developing boys (TDB). High frequency EEG spectral power was analyzed.
RESULTS:
In both samples, BWA demonstrated a pathological increase of gamma (24.4–44.0 Hz) activity at the electrode locations distant from the sources of myogenic artefacts. In both samples, the amount of gamma activity correlated positively with degree of developmental delay in BWA.
CONCLUSIONS:
The excess of high frequency oscillations may reflect imbalance in the excitation–inhibition homeostasis in the cortex. Given the important role of high frequency EEG rhythms for perceptual and cognitive processes, early and probably genetically determined abnormalities in the neuronal mechanisms generating high frequency EEG rhythms may contribute to development of the disorder. Further studies are needed to investigate the specificity of the findings for autism.

Objectives: Despite decades of electro-encephalography (EEG) research on meditators, the basic
effects of meditation on EEG are still being defined. One of the reason why no consensus has been
reached is that there is a large number of meditation practices. Is it reasonable to assume that all
meditation will lead to brain activity that is identical in all traditions? In this current study, we
addresses the hypothesis that different types of meditation lead to different neural correlates.
Methods: We compare 3 types of meditations and a group of control meditation-naive
participants. Meditation groups included a group practicing focused meditation on body
sensations (Vipassana), a group practicing focused meditation on mantra repetition (Hymalayan
tradition), a group praciticing open awareness meditation centered on pure awareness (Isha
tradition). Each group had 16 gender-matched participants of similar age range. Participants were
asked to practice 20 minutes of meditation followed or preceded by 20 minutes of instructed mind
wandering where participants were asked to voluntarily remember autobiographical events.
Results: We did not find state effects between the meditation and the instructed mind wandering
tasks for any of the groups. However, we observed difference between the groups. Meditators of
all traditions tended to show higher gamma activity than control subjects during the meditation
period. The effect was significant for Isha and Hymalayan meditators and a trend was observed for
Vipassana meditators. This gamma activity was independent of muscle activity as isolated using
the independent component analysis algorithm. In addition, we observed higher alpha activity for
the Vipassana group during meditation compared to all other groups.
Conclusions: We have shown that regular meditation practice evokes traits changes in the
electrical oscillations of the brain, that can be different from one meditation technique to another.
Our results emphasize the need to include meditation-naive control participants and groups of
different meditation traditions following the same experimental protocol for studies aiming at
characterizing the neural correlates of the meditative state.
Discussion: Our results are consistent with previous studies. Higher gamma power was observed in
Vipasanna meditators and tibetan meditators compared to control subjects.
Publications: Our results will be published in Frontier of Neuroscience special issue on Neural
Effects of Mindfulness/Contemplative Training. Our paper has been invited by the editor of this
special issue in 2011. The article will be published in 2012.

Despite decades of research, effects of different types of meditation on electroencephalographic (EEG) activity are still being defined. We compared practitioners of three different meditation traditions (Vipassana, Himalayan Yoga and Isha Shoonya) with a control group during a meditative and instructed mind-wandering (IMW) block. All meditators showed higher parieto-occipital 60–110 Hz gamma amplitude than control subjects as a trait effect observed during meditation and when considering meditation and IMW periods together. Moreover, this gamma power was positively correlated with participants meditation experience. Independent component analysis was used to show that gamma activity did not originate in eye or muscle artifacts. In addition, we observed higher 7–11 Hz alpha activity in the Vipassana group compared to all the other groups during both meditation and instructed mind wandering and lower 10–11 Hz activity in the Himalayan yoga group during meditation only. We showed that meditation practice is correlated to changes in the EEG gamma frequency range that are common to a variety of meditation practices.
