    • The Boolean operator AND between the terms is assumed by default. If you enter the words European Union in the search box, the system returns all records in which both words occur, regardless of their order.
    • When entering a set of words in quotes, e.g "european union", all records containing the literal term "European Union" will be retrieved.
  • Search by access fields (e.g. author, title, etc.):
    • To direct your search, choose the field in which you want to search the word or expression.
    • Search in the field assumes by default the expression in quotes, e.g. European union will retrieve all records containing the literal term "European Union"
  • To perform more complex searches, additional words or expressions may be added.
  • If you want to refine the search results, you can always access the link "search" in the upper left corner of the page of search results.
  • The search engine is not case sensitive. For example, the word congress has the same meaning that Congress or CONGRESS.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A multidimensional measure of schizotypal personality, the Personality Syndrome Questionnaire (PSQ) was completed by 83 undergraduate medical students. It was predicted that perceptual and cognitive reality distortions would be positively associated with hypnotic susceptibility. Fifteen of 84 items showed the predicted association. When combined into a preliminary scale, a correlation of 0.43 was found for the total scale score and susceptibility. Cronbach's alpha for this scale was acceptable at 0.77. These preliminary results are potentially vulnerable to type I error. Replication on a larger sample and factorial analysis of the proposed scales structure are required and underway. Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The role of alterations in mismatch negativity (MMN) in hypnosis was examined by recording MMN of the auditory ERP at frontal (F3, Fz, and F4) and mastoid (M1 and M2) placements. Frontal MMN is believed to reflect activity in right anterior cortical generators, whereas MMN at mastoid leads reflects generators located bilaterally in the temporal auditory cortex. MMN recordings were obtained in 11 low and 12 high hypnotically susceptible participants in three successive blocks; pre-hypnosis, hypnosis and post-hypnosis. Frontal (but not temporal) MMN showed a significant quadratic trend across testing conditions. It increased during hypnosis and then dropped post-hypnosis for both susceptibility groups. Linear trends for frontal and temporal MMN showed directly opposite patterns of change in the interaction between hypnotic susceptibility and testing blocks. Frontal MMN built up linearly over the test blocks in high relative to low susceptibility participants. Temporal MMN showed the reverse pattern and increased linearly across test conditions in those with low relative to high hypnotic susceptibility.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
The goal of this project was to examine whether there are discrete subtypes of highly suggestible individuals and to explore the relevance of these subtypes for the occurrence and expression of anomalous perceptual experiences. We conducted a series of studies to test predictions derived from typological models that assert that highly suggestible individuals are comprised of dissociative and imagery/fantasy subtypes who experience hypnosis and hypnotic suggestions through different mechanisms. These subtypes are also expected to report differential patterns of anomalous perceptual experiences.
Our studies provide clear, but qualified, support for the typological models and illustrate the importance of dissociation and hypnotic suggestibility for our understanding of anomalous experiences. Three studies yielded complementary evidence for a dissociative highly suggestible subtype that experienced greater spontaneous alterations in awareness and poorer cognitive control during hypnosis, and greater involuntariness during hypnotic responding and a second subtype that exhibited milder alterations in consciousness and marginally superior cognitive control during hypnosis, and strong baseline imagery. Our fourth study found that the two subtypes differed from low suggestible individuals, but not one another, in self-reported state dissociation and functional connectivity, as measured by EEG, during hypnosis. In a final study, we found that the dissociative subtype reported a greater amount and diversity of anomalous perceptual experiences. The results cumulatively provide support for proposals that there are distinct subtypes of highly suggestible individuals but also point to the importance of similarities in this population.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Spontaneous dissociative alterations in awareness and perception among highly suggestible individuals following a hypnotic induction may result from disruptions in the functional coordination of the frontal-parietal network. We recorded EEG and self-reported state dissociation in control and hypnosis conditions in two sessions with low and highly suggestible participants. Highly suggestible participants reliably experienced greater state dissociation and exhibited lower frontal-parietal phase synchrony in the alpha2 frequency band during hypnosis than low suggestible participants. These findings suggest that highly suggestible individuals exhibit a disruption of the frontal-parietal network that is only observable following a hypnotic induction.

Dissociated control as a signature of typological variability in high hypnotic suggestibility

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study tested the prediction that dissociative tendencies modulate the impact of a hypnotic induction on cognitive control in different subtypes of highly suggestible individuals. Low suggestible (LS), low dissociative highly suggestible (LDHS), and high dissociative highly suggestible (HDHS) participants completed the Stroop color-naming task in control and hypnosis conditions. The magnitude of conflict adaptation (faster response times on incongruent trials preceded by an incongruent trial than those preceded by a congruent trial) was used as a measure of cognitive control. LS and LDHS participants displayed marginally superior up-regulation of cognitive control following a hypnotic induction, whereas HDHS participants' performance declined. These findings indicate that dissociative tendencies modulate the influence of a hypnotic induction on cognitive control in high hypnotic suggestibility and suggest that HS individuals are comprised of distinct subtypes with dissimilar cognitive profiles.

Differential patterns of spontaneous experiential response to a hypnotic induction: A latent profile analysis
Publication year: 2010

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1053810010000607
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
A hypnotic induction produces different patterns of spontaneous experiences across individuals. The magnitude and characteristics of these responses covary moderately with hypnotic suggestibility, but also differ within levels of hypnotic suggestibility. This study sought to identify discrete phenomenological profiles in response to a hypnotic induction and assess whether experiential variability among highly suggestible individuals matches the phenomenological profiles predicted by dissociative typological models of high hypnotic suggestibility. Phenomenological state scores indexed in reference to a resting epoch during hypnosis were submitted to a latent profile analysis. The profiles in the derived four-class solution differed in multiple experiential dimensions and hypnotic suggestibility. Highly suggestible individuals were distributed across two classes that exhibited response patterns suggesting an inward attention subtype and a dissociative subtype. These results provide support for dissociative typological models of high hypnotic suggestibility and indicate that highly suggestible individuals do not display a uniform response to a hypnotic induction.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The scant literature on the sequelae of hypnotizability-measurement instruments indicates that different scales produce different reactions. The Waterloo-Stanford Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form C (WSGC) was developed as a group version of the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C). Parallel to the literature showing that the SHSS:C can produce more negative aftereffects than the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A, we report preliminary descriptive statistics documenting the infrequent occurrence of negative reactions to the WSGC age-regression item. We recommend that experimenters take this matter into consideration and, at the very least, ensure the presence of a clinician with hypnotic experience during the administration of the WSGC.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Although forgetting is often regarded as a deficit that we need to control to optimize cognitive functioning, it can have beneficial effects in a number of contexts. We examined whether disrupting memory for previous numerical responses would attenuate repetition avoidance (the tendency to avoid repeating the same number) during random number generation and thereby improve the randomness of responses. Low suggestible and low dissociative and high dissociative highly suggestible individuals completed a random number generation task in a control condition, following a posthypnotic amnesia suggestion to forget previous numerical responses, and in a second control condition following the cancellation of the suggestion. High dissociative highly suggestible participants displayed a selective increase in repetitions during posthypnotic amnesia, with equivalent repetition frequency to a random system, whereas the other two groups exhibited repetition avoidance across conditions. Our results demonstrate that temporarily disrupting memory for previous numerical responses improves random number generation.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
This study tested the prediction that dissociative highly suggestible respondents exhibit disruptions in executive attention during hypnosis. These respondents but not their non-dissociative counterparts, nor low suggestible controls, displayed impaired up-regulation of cognitive control in post-conflict trials in a Stroop color-naming task during hypnosis, but not in the control condition.

Differential patterns of spontaneous phenomenological response to a hypnotic induction: A latent profile analysis
Publication year: 2009

http://www.theassc.org/files/assc/assc13_abstracts_screen.pdf
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Previous research indicates that individuals exhibit heterogeneous patterns of spontaneous experiences following a hypnotic induction. Such variability is explained in part by hypnotic suggestibility but is also present among highly suggestible individuals. Typological models have proposed that highly suggestible individuals are comprised of dissimilar types of respondents who differ in multiple dimensions of hypnotic responding. This study sought to discern phenomenological classes from the spontaneous experiential responses to a hypnotic induction and to assess whether experiential variability among highly suggestible individuals conforms to a typological pattern. Six hundred and forty individuals experienced the Waterloo-Stanford Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form C ( wsgc; Bowers, 1998 ), which consists of a hypnotic induction followed by a series of suggestions. a two-minute resting epoch was embedded within the wsgc. Participants retrospectively completed the Phenomenology of Consciousness
Inventory ( pci; Pekala, 1991 ) in reference to their experiences during the resting epoch. Five phenomenological state factors derived from the pci ( dissociated control, positive affect, negative affect, visual imagery, and attention to internal processes) were submitted to a latent profile analysis. The fit indices and likelihood ratio tests of multiple models were contrasted and participants were assigned to a class on the basis of the posterior probabilities of the best fitting model. A four-class model exhibited the strongest fit to the data. The first and second classes were comprised of individuals from all levels of hypnotic suggestibility, whereas the third and fourth classes were comprised of only low and medium suggestible individuals. Highly suggestible individuals were divided evenly between the first and second classes, which differed in negative affect, dissociative experiences, and attentional absorption. These results indicate that highly suggestible individuals do not exhibit a homogeneous experiential response pattern to a hypnotic induction and provide support for typological models of high hypnotic suggestibility.

Heterogeneity in high hypnotic suggestibility and its implications for the study of anomalous experiences
Publication year: 2010

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Highly suggestible individuals exhibit considerable heterogeneity. A number of models have proposed that there is a dissociative highly suggestible subtype. This project tested predictions of these models and examined whether different highly suggestible subtypes display different patterns of anomalous perceptual experiences.
The first study investigated whether there are discrete subtypes of highly suggestible participants with a latent profile analysis of spontaneous phenomenological responses during hypnosis. The analysis suggested two subtypes, an inward-attention and a dissociative subtype. The former experienced greater alterations in awareness and volition, whereas the latter experienced greater attention and more vivid imagery.
The second study examined whether the two subtypes differ in hypnotic responding and cognitive functioning. High dissociative highly suggestible (HDHS) participants were more responsive to positive and negative hallucination suggestions and experienced greater involuntariness during hypnotic responding than low dissociative highly suggestible (LDHS) participants. HDHS participants exhibited impaired working memory capacity, whereas LDHS participants displayed superior object visual imagery. The two subtypes didn’t differ in general psychopathology, but HDHS participants exhibited greater levels of pathological fantasizing.
The third study tested the prediction that a hypnotic induction would differentially impact executive attention in the different HS subtypes types. HDHS participants exhibited impaired cognitive control during hypnosis relative to the control condition, whereas low suggestible (LS) and LDHS participants displayed marginally superior cognitive control during hypnosis.
The fourth study examined the neural basis for differential levels of state dissociation among LDHS and HDHS participants. HDHS participants exhibited marginally greater state dissociation during hypnosis than the other two groups. We also evaluated the relationship between this finding and measures of electrocortical synchronization.
The fifth study examined whether the typological models can yield insights into the expression and prevalence of anomalous perceptual experiences. The HDHS participants were found to consistently report a greater incidence of anomalous experiences.
These studies indicate that there are different subtypes of highly suggestible individuals who exhibit dissimilar cognitive and phenomenological profiles.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
We conducted two trials of a free-response ESP test. The aim was to determine if two groups, 'low'- and 'high'-scorers on a measure of hypnotic susceptibility, would score differently on a psi-hitting task. We used the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility which assesses the hypnotisability of subjects when tested in groups. The sample (N = 101 psi-believing participants; 69 females and 32 males) was split into 'High HS' (n = 20) and 'Low HS' groups (n = 81) based on HS scores. There was a significant difference between the two groups on Hypnotic Susceptibility and psi scores (i.e., number of hits), t(99) = 2.31, p = .012.

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
People have always been fascinated by the extent to which belief or will may influence behavior. Proverbs, like “we tend to get what we expect,” and concepts, such as optimistic thinking or self-fulfilling prophecy, reflect this intuition of an important link between one’s dispositions and subsequent behavior. In other words, one’s predictions directly or indirectly cause them to become true. In a similar manner, every culture, country or religion has their own words for ‘expectation,’ ‘belief,’ ‘disappointment,’ ‘surprise,’ and generally all have the same meaning: under uncertainty, what one expects or believes is the most likely to happen. This relation between what caused a reaction in the past will probably cause it again in the future might not be realistic. If the expected outcome is not confirmed, it may result in a personal ‘disappointment’, and if the outcome fits no expectations, it will be a ‘surprise’. Our brain is hardwired with this heuristic capacity of learning the cause-effect relationship and to project its probability as the basis for much of our behavior, as well as cognitions. This experience-based expectation is a form of learning that helps the brain to bypass an exhaustive search in finding a satisfactory solution. Expectations may thus be considered an innate theory of causality; that is, a set of factors (causes) generating a given phenomenon (effects) influence the way we treat incoming information but also the way we retrieve the stored information. These expectancy templates may well represent one of the basic rules of how the brain processes information, affecting the way we perceive the world, direct our attention and deal with conflicting information. In fact, expectations have been shown to influence our judgments and social interactions, along with our volition to individually decide and commit to a particular course of action. However, people’s expectations may elicit the anticipation of their own automatic reactions to various situations and behaviors cues, and can explain that expecting to feel an increase in alertness after coffee consumption leads to experiencing the consequent physiologic and behavioral states. We call this behavior-response expectancy. This non-volitional form of expectation has been shown to influence cognitions such as memory, pain, visual awareness, implicit learning and attention, through the mediation of phenomena like placebo effects and hypnotic behaviors. Importantly, when talking about expectations, placebo and hypnosis, it is important to note that we are also talking about suggestion and its modulating capability. In other words, suggestion has the power to create response expectancies that activate automatic responses, which will, in turn, influence cognition and behavior so as to shape them congruently with the expected outcome. Accordingly, hypnotic inductions are a systematic manipulation of expectancy, similar to placebo, and therefore they both work in a similar way. Considering such assumptions, the major question we address in this PhD thesis is to know if these expectancy-based mechanisms are capable of modulating more high-level information processing such as cognitive conflict resolution, as is present in the well-known Stroop task. In fact, in a recent series of studies, reduction or elimination of Stroop congruency effects was obtained through suggestion and hypnotic induction. In this PhD thesis, it is asked whether a suggestion reinforced by placebos, operating through response-expectancy mechanisms, is able to induce a top-down cognitive modulation to overcome cognitive conflict in the Stroop task, similar to those results found using suggestion and hypnosis manipulation.
