Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
The human brain recruits similar brain regions when a state is experienced (e.g., touch, pain, actions) and when that state is passively observed in other individuals. In adults, seeing other people being touched activates similar brain areas as when we experience touch ourselves. Here we show that already by four months of age, cortical responses to tactile stimulation are modulated by visual information specifying another person being touched. We recorded somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in 4-month-old infants while they were presented with brief vibrotactile stimuli to the hands. At the same time that the tactile stimuli were presented the infants observed another person’s hand being touched by a soft paintbrush or approached by the paintbrush which then touched the surface next to their hand. A prominent positive peak in SEPs contralateral to the site of tactile stimulation around 130 ms after the tactile stimulus onset was of a significantly larger amplitude for the “Surface” trials than for the “Hand” trials. These findings indicate that, even at four months of age, somatosensory cortex is not only involved in the personal experience of touch but can also be vicariously recruited by seeing other people being touched.

A VEP study in sleeping and awake one-month-old infants and its relation with social behavior
Publication year: 2015

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
With the present study we aimed to analyze the relationship between infants' behavior and their visual evoked-potential (VEPs) response. Specifically, we want to verify differences regarding the VEP response in sleeping and awake infants and if an association between VEP components, in both groups, with neurobehavioral outcome could be identified. To do so, thirty-two full-term and healthy infants, approximately 1-month of age, were assessed through a VEP unpatterned flashlight stimuli paradigm, offered in two different intensities, and were assessed using a neurobehavioral scale. However, only 18 infants have both assessments, and therefore, these is the total included in both analysis. Infants displayed a mature neurobehavioral outcome, expected for their age. We observed that P2 and N3 components were present in both sleeping and awake infants. Differences between intensities were found regarding the P2 amplitude, but only in awake infants. Regression analysis showed that N3 amplitude predicted an adequate social interactive and internal regulatory behavior in infants who were awake during the stimuli presentation. Taking into account that social orientation and regulatory behaviors are fundamental keys for social-like behavior in 1-month-old infants, this study provides an important approach for assessing physiological biomarkers (VEPs) and its relation with social behavior, very early in postnatal development. Moreover, we evidence the importance of the infant's state when studying differences regarding visual threshold processing and its association with behavioral outcome.

Final report - From inner to dyadic connection: The effect of mindfulness intervention on mother-infant bio-behavioural synchrony
Publication year: 2023
Abstract/Results:
Abstract:
Background: Mother-infant bio-behavioural synchrony, the coordination of behavioural/physiological/neural cues during interactions, is considered fundamental for later development. Mindfulness’ literature claims that we connect better with others if we are aware of and connected with our own inner experience. Thus, mindfulness, while promoting the mother’s connection with her own inner world, might promote her attunement with the infant.
Aims: To explore the effects of mindfulness on mother-infant bio-behavioural synchrony.
Method: 67 mother-infant dyads were video-recorded during interactions at 3, 6, 9 months. Mothers’ dispositional and interpersonal mindfulness were assessed. We coded mother’s and infant’s affective behaviours and physiological activation (RSA, with ECG sensors). Neural activity was recorded with EEG. 34 dyads participated at a 5-weeks mindfulness intervention at 9 m, 18 dyads were part of the control group. Both groups were assessed before and after the intervention.
Results: Mindfulness was associated with more matching of mother-infant’s positive affective behaviors and higher association between mother’s and infant’s RSA. A greater lateralization of brain activity for the alpha and gamma bands power was evidenced only in high mindful mothers indicated an optimized emotional and cognitive functioning. The intervention increased mindfulness and the quantity of shared interactive moments only in the intervention group.
Conclusions: Mindfulness is an important protective factor that allows mothers to connect better at a bio-behavioural level with their infants. Mindfulness could be improved in order to promote positive parenting during infancy.

Self-regulation at one month predicts language development at 12 months of age
Publication year: 2025
URL:
https://doi.org/10.1080/17405629.2025.2607718
Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Infants undergo rapid development during their first year of life. Although self-regulation, cognition and language development are closely related, the longitudinal relationship between them in the first year of life is unclear, particularly in terms of how self-regulation predicts cognitive and language outcomes. The current study investigated the association between self-regulatory abilities at one month of age and subsequent cognitive and linguistic development. At one month, 35 infants were assessed using the Neonatal Behavioural Assessment Scale to measure self-regulation abilities. At 12 months, developmental outcomes (cognitive and language, i.e. expressive and receptive) were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that early self-regulation abilities predicted language development, but not cognitive performance, one year later. The findings are discussed in the context of the complex developmental relationship between self-regulation and language.
