To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.

BACKGROUND:
We previously developed a novel method of identifying children aged 9-12 years who may be at elevated risk of developing schizophrenia and the spectrum disorders because they present a triad of putative antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz). The present study aimed to determine whether ASz children also present neurocognitive deficits that are commonly observed in patients with schizophrenia.
METHODS:
Twenty-eight ASz children and 28 typically-developing (TD) children without the antecedents of schizophrenia completed a battery of neurocognitive tests assessing seven domains of function: General intelligence, scholastic achievement, verbal memory, visual memory, working memory, executive function (EF)-verbal fluency, and EF-inhibition.
RESULTS:
Relative to TD children, the ASz group showed poorer performance on all neurocognitive tests (mean Cohen's d effect size=0.52). In linear regression analyses, group status (ASz vs. TD) significantly predicted scores on the general intelligence, verbal memory, working memory, and EF-inhibition domains (p<0.05). The severity of problems on each of the individual antecedents comprising the antecedent triad did not relate strongly to performance on the neurocognitive domains.
CONCLUSIONS:
Children aged 9-12 years who present multiple antecedents of schizophrenia display poorer neurocognition than healthy peers on several domains showing pronounced deficits in schizophrenia, first-episode psychosis, and youth with prodromal symptoms. Longitudinal follow-up is necessary to determine the extent to which poorer neurocognitive performance is specific to those who develop schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE:
Williams syndrome (WS) is characterized by visuospatial impairment often described as reflecting a local processing bias. However, these evidences are controversial, which may also be compounded by the large variability in performance that has been found across studies. To investigate local processing bias in WS and define whether this bias determines performance in global-local tasks.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS:
A preference task (match to sample similarity) and a performance task (requiring identification of local or global similarity) were conducted in 15 WS subjects using Navon hierarchical figures. Performance of WS group was compared to a chronological (n=15) and mental age-matched control group (n=15).
RESULTS:
The preference task demonstrated that 7 WS subjects showed a local bias, while 9 subjects performed like controls, exhibiting a global preference. Performance on the preference task was significantly correlated with education level and intelligence level. In the performance task WS subjects with a local processing bias made significantly more errors in the global condition than the WS subjects with a global preference.
CONCLUSIONS:
Our results suggest that the local bias is not homogeneous across WS subjects, thus reflecting the great variability described in other studies. By comparing WS subjects with a global bias to WS subjects with a local bias, we showed that the education level and the level of intelligence are important factors in defining the processing style. Additionally, the local processing preference found in some WS subjects seems to be related to their global processing deficit, both being commonly correlated with the education level.

Adults with schizophrenia present cognitive impairments, as do individuals at ultra-high risk for the disorder, youth with relatives with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and children with antecedents of schizophrenia. The present study aimed to determine if impairments in childhood differed depending on the definition of risk and/or on the degree of relatedness to an affected individual, and if impairments were explained by IQ. Four groups of children aged 9–12 years were studied: (1) 13 children with =1 first-degree or =2 second-degree affected relatives (high familial loading: FHxH); (2) 14 with =1 affected second-degree relative (lower familial loading: FHxL); (3) 32 with well-replicated antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz); and (4) 45 typically-developing (TD) children with neither a positive family history nor antecedents. Compared to TD children, both FHxH and ASz children exhibited significantly poorer verbal comprehension, scholastic achievement, and verbal working memory, while FHxH children additionally displayed significantly lower full-scale IQ, and verbal memory and executive function impairments. After adjusting statistical analyses for IQ, group differences were attenuated. Relative to TD children, FHxL children showed no significant differences in performance. The results imply that impairments in verbal comprehension, scholastic achievement, and verbal working memory may index vulnerability for schizophrenia among children with affected relatives with the disorder and among those with multiple antecedents of the disorder who have no affected relatives. More accurate identification of children at-risk for schizophrenia and the specific deficits that they present provides opportunities for interventions such as cognitive remediation that may impact the development of the illness.

Using linear mixed models adjusted for sex, ethnicity, parental occupation and practice effects, cognitive development between ages 9 and 16 years was compared for youth characterised by a triad of well-replicated developmental antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz; N = 32) and youth with a least one affected relative with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (FHx; N = 29), relative to TD youth (N = 45). Participants completed measures of IQ, scholastic achievement, memory and executive function at three time-points, separated by approximately 24-month intervals.
RESULTS:
Compared to TD youth, both ASz and FHx youth displayed stable developmental deficits in verbal working memory and inhibition/switching executive functions. ASz youth additionally presented with stable deficits in measures of vocabulary (IQ), word reading, numerical operations, and category fluency executive function, and a slower rate of growth (developmental lag) on spelling from 9 to 16 years than TD peers. Conversely, faster rates of growth relative to TD peers (developmental delay) were observed on visual and verbal memory, and on category fluency executive function (ASz youth only) and on matrix reasoning (IQ) and word reading (FHx youth only).
CONCLUSIONS:
These differential patterns of deviation from normative adolescent cognitive development among at-risk youth imply potential for cognitive rehabilitation targeting of specific cognitive deficits at different developmental phases.

The development of dreaming and its association with brain maturation and cognitive development are rarely studied in spite of adult studies showing a close relationship between dreaming and cognitive functioning. In order to bridge this gap in the literature we aimed to depict the associations between individual differences in neurocognitive maturation and the formal and content related characteristics of children’s dream reports. We analyzed the dream reports of 40 children between the ages of 4 to 8 years. Specific dream content categories, found to change significantly throughout development, were correlated with cognitive performance. To measure the latter we used neuropsychological tests (a modified version of the Fruit Stroop Test and Emotional Stroop Test for Children, and the Attention Network Test [ANT]) and intelligence tests (subscales of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children [WISC–IV], and the Raven’s Colored Progressive Matrices [CPM]). Results suggest that the dreamer’s presence in their dreams (manifested in activities, interactions, self-effectiveness, willful effort, and cognitive reflections) indicates more effective executive control in waking life. The quality and content of these activities and interactions are correlated with the child’s capacities of emotional processing. Contrary to previous findings dream bizarreness and dream recall frequency were not associated with any cognitive indicators. Although in adult dream research the continuity of waking and dreaming cognition has been well-studied, our work is 1 of the first to explore the connection between children’s cognitive maturation and dreaming.

While neural networks approach human levels of perfor- mance in many complex tasks, they require much more training than humans. This may be because only humans can infer and apply generalizable principles from prior ex- perience (Lake, Ullman, Tenenbaum, & Gershman, 2017). However, the statistics that underlie the human learning process are poorly understood and hard to investigate in the large state spaces found in most complex tasks (van Opheusden & Ma, 2019). We thus designed a cog- nitive task whose potential solutions are few enough for subjects to densely sample policy space, but complex enough to compel intelligent search. We launched the game as a smartphone-based app (hexxed.io) to collect data from 10k human participants. We find that unlike re- inforcement learning agents (Deep-Q Networks ; DQNs), humans (1) search a highly restricted subset of the pol- icy space; (2) attempt even poor solutions many times before discarding them; (3) arrive at the optimal policy suddenly and unpredictably with a “leap of insight”. Our data suggest a “top-down” learning process by which hu- mans propose explanatory solutions which they replace only upon collecting sufficient evidence to the contrary, in contrast to the “bottom-up” learning of DQNs that as- sociates states with rewarding actions

Background
Learning a complex skill requires searching a potentially enormous search space. While artificial intelligence (AI) can now approach human levels of performance in many complex tasks, they require much more training than humans. This may be because only humans can infer and apply generalizable principles from limited experiences. However, the statistics that underlie this learning process are both poorly understood and hard to investigate in the large state spaces found in most complex tasks.
Aims
Our goal is to design a cognitive task that is simple enough to study using the tools of psychophysics, but complex enough to induce intelligent search. We aim to define the statistical principles that shape efficient search to improve models of natural and artificial intelligence.
Method
We designed a puzzle with minimal verbal instruction and thousands of potential solutions, only a few of which meet the criterion of success. We launched the game as a smartphone-based app (hexxed.io), allowing us to collect data from ~10k human participants and compared their learning to artificial neural networks (ANNs). We analysed pupil dynamics to reveal how subjects plan.
Results
Unlike the AI, humans 1) search a highly restricted subset of the policy space; 2) attempt even poor solutions many times before discarding them; 3) arrive at the optimal policy suddenly and unpredictably with a “leap of insight”. 4) plan more for trials with longer reaction times, as revealed by greater pupil movement.
Conclusions
Our data suggest a “top-down” learning process in which people learn by proposing explanatory theories which they refine or replace only upon collecting sufficient evidence to the contrary.
