The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Perceiving a body is a phenomenal experience completely different from experiencing a body as one's own body. Visual presentation of bodies or body parts recruits several occipitotemporal regions in the brain. Are these activations sufficient in order to change the phenomenal status of a body in one's own body? In this paper, I will review consolidated experimental evidence showing that the feeling of owning a body is not limited to the vision of a body, rather it is the result of a complex interaction between interoception, exteroception, and pre-existing body templates. To illustrate this complex interplay, I will take advantage of the so-called bodily illusions, referring to controlled illusory generation of unusual bodily feeling. These feelings include having a supernumerary limb, or lacking an arm, or feeling like you do not really have a body, or feeling that you do not really control a certain part of your body, or that your body is not really yours. In the last 15 years more than 150 empirical studies on body illusions have been published (Source: Pubmed, June 2014). These studies, using different technologies, are largely responsible for contributed our current understanding of bodily self-consciousness.

STUDY OBJECTIVES:
Whereas both insomnia and altered interoception are core symptoms in affective disorders, their neural mechanisms remain insufficiently understood and have not previously been linked. Insomnia Disorder (ID) is characterized by sensory hypersensitivity during wakefulness and sleep. Previous studies on sensory processing in ID addressed external stimuli only, but not interoception. Interoceptive sensitivity can be studied quantitatively by measuring the cerebral cortical response to one's heartbeat (heartbeat-evoked potential, HEP). We here investigated whether insomnia is associated with increased interoceptive sensitivity as indexed by the HEP amplitude.
METHODS:
Sixty-four participants aged 21-70 years were recruited through www.sleepregistry.nl including 32 people suffering from ID and 32 age- and sex-matched controls without sleep complaints. HEPs were obtained from resting-state high-density electroencephalography (HD-EEG) recorded during evening wakeful rest in eyes-open (EO) and eyes-closed (EC) conditions of 5-minute duration each. Significance of group differences in HEP amplitude and their topographical distribution over the scalp were assessed by means of cluster-based permutation tests.
RESULTS:
In particular during EC, and to a lesser extent during EO, people with ID had a larger amplitude late HEP component than controls at frontal electrodes 376-500 ms after the R-wave peak. Source localization suggested increased neural activity time-locked to heartbeats in people with ID mainly in anterior cingulate/medial frontal cortices.
CONCLUSIONS:
People with insomnia show insufficient adaptation of their brain responses to the ever-present heartbeats. Abnormalities in the neural circuits involved in interoceptive awareness including the salience network may be of key importance to the pathophysiology of insomnia.

Empirical findings in the Cognitive Sciences on the relationship between feeling states and subjective time have led to the assumption that time perception entails emotional and interoceptive states. The perception of time would thereafter be embodied; the bodily self, the continuous input from the body is the functional anchor of phenomenal experience and the mental self. Subjective time emerges through the existence of the self across time as an enduring and embodied entity. This relation is prominently disclosed in studies on altered states of consciousness such as in meditative states, under the influence of hallucinogens as well as in many psychiatric and neurological conditions. An increased awareness of oneself coincides with an increased awareness of time. Conversely, a decreased awareness of the self is associated with diminished awareness of time. The body of empirical work within different conceptual frameworks on the intricate relationship between self and time is presented and discussed.

Is the self already relational in its very bodily foundations? The question of whether our mental life is initially and primarily shaped by embodied dimensions of the individual or by interpersonal relations is debated in many fields, including psychology, philosophy, psychoanalysis, and more recently, cognitive neuroscience. In this interdisciplinary target article, we put forward the radical claim that even some of the most minimal aspects of selfhood, namely the feeling qualities associated with being an embodied subject, are fundamentally shaped by embodied interactions with other people in early infancy and beyond. Such embodied interactions allow the developing organism to mentalize its homeostatic regulation. In other words, embodied interactions contribute directly to the building of mental models of the infant’s physiological states, given the need to maintain such states within a given dynamic range despite internal or external perturbations. Specifically, our position rests on the following three propositions: (1) the progressive integration and organization of sensory and motor signals constitutes the foundations of the minimal self, a process which we have linked to contemporary, computational models of brain function and named “embodied mentalization”; (2) interactions with other people are motivated and constrained by the same principles that govern the “mentalization” of sensorimotor signals in the individual – and hence the mentalization of one’s body can include signals from other bodies in physical proximity and interaction, especially in interaction with particular bodies. (3) Crucially, given the dependency of humans in early infancy, there is a “homeostatically necessary” plethora of such embodied “proximal” interactions, especially as regards interoception. Collectively, such experiences of proximal intercorporeality “sculpt” the mentalization process and hence the constitution of the minimal self, including the progressive sophistication of mental distinctions between “subject-object,” “self-other” and even “pleasure-pain.” Finally, we explore notions of cardiac and more broadly interoceptive awareness as later, cognitive acquisitions that allow us to progressively solidify such distinctions, as well as understand and empathise with other people.

Interoception refers to the process by which the nervous system senses, interprets, and integrates signals originating from within the body, providing a moment-by-moment mapping of the body’s internal landscape across conscious and unconscious levels. Interoceptive signaling has been considered a component process of reflexes, urges, feelings, drives, adaptive responses, cognitive and emotional experiences, highlighting its contributions to the maintenance of homeostatic functioning, body regulation, and survival. Dysfunction of interoception is increasingly recognized as an important component of different mental health conditions including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, eating disorders, addictive disorders, somatic symptom disorders, and others. However, a number of conceptual and methodological challenges have made it difficult for interoceptive constructs to be broadly applied in mental health research and treatment settings. In November 2016, the Laureate Institute for Brain Research organized the first Interoception Summit, a gathering of interoception experts from around the world, with the goal of accelerating progress in understanding the role of interoception in mental health. The discussions at the meeting were organized around four themes: interoceptive assessment, interoceptive integration, interoceptive psychopathology, and the generation of a roadmap that could serve as a guide for future endeavors. This article presents an overview of the emerging consensus generated by the meeting.

The perception of internal bodily signals (interoception) is central to many theories of emotion and embodied cognition. According to recent theoretical views, the sensory processing of visceral signals such as one's own heartbeat is determined by top-down predictions about the expected interoceptive state of the body (interoceptive inference). In this EEG study we examined neural responses to heartbeats following expected and unexpected emotional stimuli. We used a modified stimulus repetition task in which pairs of facial expressions were presented with repeating or alternating emotional content, and we manipulated the emotional valence and the likelihood of stimulus repetition. We found that affective predictions of external socially relevant information modulated the heartbeat-evoked potential, a marker of cardiac interoception. Crucially, the HEP changes highly relied on the expected emotional content of the facial expression. Thus, expected negative faces led to a decreased HEP amplitude, whereas such an effect was not observed after an expected neutral face. These results suggest that valence-specific affective predictions, and their uniquely associated predicted bodily sensory state, can reduce or amplify cardiac interoceptive responses. In addition, the affective repetition effects were dependent on repetition probability, highlighting the influence of top-down exteroceptive predictions on interoception. Our results are in line with recent models of interoception supporting the idea that predicted bodily states influence sensory processing of salient external information.

ABSTRACT
Interoception is the body-to-brain axis of sensations originating from the internal body organs signalling their physiological state. Neurally, these visceral signals are mainly conveyed through the vagus nerve to the Nucleus Tractus Solitarius in the brainstem from where they are relayed to regions such as the locus-coerelous and the amygdala and, through thalamocortical projections, to higher order structures such as the insula. However, despite the recognized importance of the vagus nerve in the conduction and regulation of autonomic signals, experimental evidence of its role in bringing these signals into consciousness and in emotional processing is still lacking. Here, we investigated the impact of non-invasive stimulation of the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (tVNS) in the modulation of interoceptive information and emotional processing. In Study 1 we show that tVNS is associated with improved performance in a task assessing the ability to consciously perceive heartbeats. Study 2 used an experimental technique that capitalizes on natural fluctuations of arterial baroreceptor firing to show that tVNS modulates the impact of afferent cardiac signals in the processing threat cues. Study 3 employed a task known to rely on the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system to show the effectiveness of a novel rapid event-related stimulation protocol. Study 4 explored the potential role of tVNS in physiological and subjective empathic reactivity to others’ pain but did not find significant effects. Together, these findings enhance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the interoceptive and emotional processing, and demonstrate the potential of tVNS as an important tool to investigate brain-body interactions.

OBJECTIVES
Low sexual desire is a common complaint among women in the reproductive years. There is controversy regarding the relationship between testosterone (T) and female desire, but there is also lack of research on moderators. Lack of awareness of effects of T on emotions and bodily sensations might interfere with the subjective experience of desire. Moreover, T appears to be more important for searching and competing for partners than for long-term pair bonding. Therefore, we examined if interoception, alexithymia, maladaptive psychological defenses, and relationship status, moderated the relationship between salivary T and female desire.
METHODS
One hundred sixty eight Portuguese women of reproductive age completed the desire dimension of the Female Sexual Function Index, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), and the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40). Interoception was determined by a heartbeat detection task. Participants reported if they had a regular sexual partner. Luminescence immunoassays were used to determine salivary T.
RESULTS
Three multiple regressions models revealed that, among unpartnered women, higher desire was predicted by the combinations of 1) higher T and lesser alexithymia, 2) higher T and less use of maladaptive defenses, 3) higher T and greater interoception. For partnered women, neither T nor the interactions of T with indices of emotional and bodily awareness predicted desire.
CONCLUSIONS
These findings provide preliminary evidence that T is more important for the desire of unpartnered women, and that lack of conscious awareness of emotions and bodily sensations interferes with the effects of T on the subjective experience of desire.

Our ability to maintain a coherent bodily self despite continuous changes within and outside our body relies on the highly flexible multisensory representation of the body, and of the space surrounding it: the peripersonal space (PPS). The aim of our study was to investigate whether during pregnancy - when extremely rapid changes in body size and shape occur - a likewise rapid plastic reorganization of the neural representation of the PPS occurs. We used an audio-tactile integration task to measure the PPS boundary at different stages of pregnancy. We found that in the second trimester of pregnancy and postpartum women did not show differences in their PPS size as compared to the control group (non-pregnant women). However, in the third trimester the PPS was larger than the controls' PPS and the shift between representation of near and far space was more gradual. We therefore conclude that during pregnancy the brain adapts to the sudden bodily changes, by expanding the representation of the space around the body. This may represent a mechanism to protect the vulnerable abdomen from injury from surrounding objects.

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND
The space immediately surrounding our body – i.e. ‘peripersonal space’ (PPS; Rizzolatti et al., 1997) - is important, as it is where we interact with stimuli in the external world. Recent studies have shown that the PPS boundaries are malleable. For example, it has been found that being in proximity to an individual we have previously co-operated with induces an expansion of our PPS towards that person.
AIMS
With our study we aimed at investigating whether the PPS changes during pregnancy, a critical stage in life, when extremely rapid changes occur in the body size and shape. As pregnancy advances, the PPS should expand, reflecting an updated mental representation of one’s body that makes external stimuli, initially perceived as being outside of the PPS, to be perceived closer, within the PPS.
METHODS
To this aim, we tested 37 pregnant women and 19 non-pregnant women three times: at the 20th and at 34th week of the gestational period and 8 weeks postpartum (and at the same time intervals in the control group). To assess the PPS boundaries we used a well-established audiotactile task (Canzoneri et al., 2012) whereby participants’ reaction times (RTs) to a tactile stimulus on the abdomen, were measured while listening to a dynamic sound that seems to start at a location far from the participant and progressively approach the participant’s body. When touches occurred at short temporal delays the sound was perceived far and gradually closer to the participant’s body as the delays increase. As sounds facilitate tactile RTs only when presented close to the body (Serino et al., 2007), we expected RTs to progressively decrease as the sound was approaching. The critical distance where the sound speeds up tactile RTs can be taken as a proxy of the PPS boundary.
RESULTS
By comparing this critical distance across the three time periods we found that whereas at the first and the third testing period no differences in the PPS size were observed between the groups, in the second period, the pregnant participants’ PPS was larger than the controls’.
CONCLUSIONS
We conclude that during pregnancy our brain adapts to the sudden change in body size, by expanding the representation of the space around us, possibly in order to protect the vulnerable abdomen from bumping against objects.

BACKGROUND
Sleep and interoception are important regulating processes of physiological homeostasis and of consciousness. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between them. People with insomnia chronically experience their sleep as conscious wakefulness, which we hypothesize could involve interoception-related neural dysfunctions.
AIMS
By incorporating EEG, neuroimaging, and questionnaire data, we aim to establish direct links between interoception and the experience of (un)consciousness during sleep.
METHOD
Measures of brain network activity including EEG microstate properties and BOLD functional connectivity variability, as well as brain connectivity networks derived from diffusion MRI tractography, were compared between people with insomnia and people without sleep complaints. Self-reported measures were collected in a community-based sample and used to investigate the relationship between somatic complaints and insomnia severity.
RESULTS
The mean duration of a particular class of EEG microstates previously linked to salience network activity is reduced in people with insomnia. Functional connectivity variability between the anterior salience network and the left executive control network is reduced in people with insomnia. People with insomnia show brain structural hyperconnectivity in a subnetwork anchored at the right angular gyrus. Poor sleep and somatic complaints mutually reinforce each other while their relationship is modulated by habitual insomnia severity.
CONCLUSIONS
There is a tight relationship between sleep and interoception. Experience of consciousness during sleep involves aberrant dynamics of the salience network, a key network for interoception

Prior research indicates that synesthesia may play a role in the etiology of ghost experiences
AIMS
A survey explored whether synesthetes differed from non synesthetes on ghost experiences, frequencies of differently appraised ghost experiences, senses and spatial locations of ghost experiences, psychometric predictors of ghost experiences (transliminality, boundary thinness, creativity, somatic focus, interoception and locus of control). Qualitative analysis of narratives using grounded theory. The psychomanteum explored synesthesia, geomagnetic field (GMF), electromagnetic field (emf), heart rate variability, and the output of a random number generator (RNG) in exceptional experiences (ExE).
METHOD
An online survey explored correlates of ghost experiences. A psychomanteum compared 15 synesthetes with 15 non synesthetes on ExE and their correlates.
RESULTS
Synesthetes reported more ghost experiences with a paranormal appraisal. Boundaries, creativity, interoception and somatic focus correlated with ghost experiences with a paranormal appraisal. Transliminality was the strongest independent predictor. The RNG output correlated negatively and significantly with the extent to which ExE were rated as taking up space. Post hoc analysis indicates that this effect was for synesthetes only. The GMF (nanoTesla) and local emf (milliGauss) influenced the levels of heart rate variability. GMF correlated with the extent to which experiences took up space.
CONCLUSIONS
Synesthesia, creativity, boundaries and awareness of the body play a role in ghost experiences. Results of the psychomanteum study are suggestive of interactions between subjective experience and the local and non-local environment, particularly among synesthetes.

The central nervous system senses and responds to afferent signals arising from the body. These interoceptive afferents are essential to physiological homeostatic control and are known to influence an individual’s momentary affect, cognition, motivation, and conscious experiences. Both sleep and interoception are tightly connected to physical and mental well-being. This review outlines the current knowledge about the interactions between interoception and sleep. It is demonstrated that there are complex, dynamic relations between sleep and sensory processes within each modality of interoception, including thermoception, nociception, visceral sensations, and subjective feelings about these sensations. A better understanding and appreciation of the intricate interrelations may facilitate management of functional somatic symptoms, chronic pain, insomnia, and other sleep and mental disorders.

Sense of agency (SoAg) is the feeling of control over one's actions and their effects. It can be augmented or attenuated by internal signals and by external cues. Research has shown a reduction in the SoAg in older adulthood, but the reasons behind this change remain unclear. We investigated agency processing differences that may underpin age-related changes in SoAg. Using a modified version of a vicarious agency paradigm, we tested the modulation of SoAg by manipulating external situational agency cues in younger and older adults. Our results show that the illusion of vicarious agency was less pronounced in older adults. These results were replicated in a second experiment which also showed that older adults performed significantly better in interoception and proprioception tasks. We suggest that increased reliance on internal cues may explain differences in agency processing in older adulthood.

The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Interoception, the sense of the physiological condition of the body originating from within its internal organs, and body image, namely the perception, feelings and attitudes one has about one's body, are two fundamental components of our sense of personal identity and overall well-being. However, the relation between interoception and body image remains poorly understood. We here review recent behavioural and neuroimaging evidence from non-clinical and clinical populations (e.g. eating disorders) to propose that basic interoceptive processes and interoceptive awareness may crucially contribute to the complex formation of body image, as well as to its disturbances. In particular, lower interoceptive accuracy and awareness are associated with body-image concerns. We provide a potential mechanistic explanation of the link between interoception and body image, which aims to integrate interoceptive and exteroceptive representations of the body. The suggested link between interoception and body image can inform new empirically testable hypotheses on the underlying neurocognitive processes that are central to body image concerns and disturbances, and motivate relevant clinical implications.
