History:
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of Man from both the physical and spiritual perspectives.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promote more health and contribute to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also assigns Scientific Research Scholarships for the study of neurophysiological and mental health in people, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 461 projects, more than 1000 researchers, with research groups in twenty-seven countries, resulting, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, out of which 172 published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Since 1996 the BIAL Foundation organizes the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the BIAL Foundation Fellows which are spread around the world.
Classified as an institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Title: BIAL Grants
Start date: 1994
History:
In 1994 the BIAL Foundation launched a programme of science research grants with the aim of encouraging the research into Man’s physical and mental processes, namely in fields still largely unexplored but which warrant further scientific analysis, as Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
Since its launch, applications to the BIAL grants have been increasing. Up to now 461 projects have been supported, involving more than 1000 researchers from 27 countries.
The approved applications have benefited from grants in amounts comprised between €5,000 and €50, 000. The amount to be granted is fixed by the Scientific board according to the needs of each project.
The supported projects have originated, until April 2013, in about 600 full papers, 172 out of which were published in indexed international journals with an average impact factor of 3.6 and a substantial number of citations (1665).
Among the BIAL Foundation fellows is worth highlighting the presence of scientists from prestigious universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and many others.
The BIAL grants are promoted biannually.

Testing a language-using parrot for telepathy
Publication year: 2003

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
Aimée Morgana noticed that her language-using African Grey parrot, N'kisi, often seemed to respond to her thoughts and intentions in a seemingly telepathic manner. We set up a series of trials to test whether this apparent telepathic ability would be expressed in formal tests in which Aimée and the parrot were in different rooms, on different floors, under conditions in which the parrot could receive no sensory information from Aimée or from anyone else.
During these trials Aimée and the parrot were both videotaped continuously. At the beginning of each trial, Aimée opened a numbered sealed envelope containing a photograph, and then looked at it for two minutes. These photographs corresponded to a prespecified list of key words in N'kisi's vocabulary, and were selected and randomized in advance by a third party. We conducted a total of 149 two-minute trials. The recordings of N'kisi during these trials were transcribed blind by three independent transcribers. Their transcripts were generally in good agreement. Using a majority scoring method, in which at least two of the three transcribers were in agreement, N'kisi said one or more of the key words in 71 trials. He scored 23 hits: the key words he said corresponded to the target pictures.
In a Randomized Permutation Analysis (RPA), there were as many or more hits than N'kisi actually scored in only 5 out of 20,000 random permutations, giving a p value of 5/20,000 or 0.00025. In a Bootstrap Resampling Analysis (BRA), only 4 out of 20,000 permutations equalled or exceeded N'kisi's actual score (p = 0.0002). Both by the RPA and BRA the mean number of hits expected by chance was 12, with a standard deviation of 3. N'kisi repeated key words more when they were hits than when they were misses. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that N'kisi was reacting telepathically to Aimée's mental activity.

Abstract/Results: RESULTS:
Research in interspecies communication and documentation of the language use and telepathic abilities of the parrot N'Kisi has continued. We have made more breakthroughs in his language skills, and progress in our various research studies. During the project term, N'Kisi’s contextual vocabulary increased from 1025 to 1286 words. He has also created original sentences with complex grammatical structure. N’Kisi has created thousands of novel sentences, and many were captured with our new recording system.
While N'Kisi’s rate of learning new words has been fairly stable, his rate of spontaneous telepathy is more variable. As I learned during an analysis of possible incidents the first year, it had declined, and was not sufficiently robust to conduct more controlled studies. To gain more information, I undertook a comprehensive analysis of possible spontaneous incidents from daily logs. Incidents in 16 categories of potential telepathic response based on the type of stimulus or circumstance were analyzed by category and year, to study any notable patterns.
During this time I finished researching and installing a new camera set-up, after testing and trouble-shooting a range of equipment and software. I also devised, improved, tested, and implemented procedures for data acquisition and recording, and refined and prepared further research protocols. I then carried out a program of filming, with some notable incidents and possible spontaneous telepathy, which we will be working to transcribe and analyze. I also worked on a special featuring our work for Discovery Channel /Animal Planet, Jane Goodall’s When Animals Talk.

Abstract/Results:
Summary:
The program explores communications and relationships between animals and humans. In part one we witness how animals can learn our language and find unique human-animal partnerships working to make the world a better place. Part two will discover how we humans can learn the languages of animals through science and other, less-easily defined approaches. Part three discovers the "conversations" that can take place between animals and humans, and the amazing results that these mutual comprehensions can yield. Dr Goodall's message is that communicating with animals brings humankind closer to another world, and that such liaisons can bring about unexpected benefits

Abstract/Results: ABSTRACT:
OBJECTIVES:
Aimee Morgana has been teaching the understanding and usage of spoken human language to an African gray parrot, "N’Kisi", who is now one of the most gifted language-using animals in the world. He has also
demonstrated possible telepathic abilities in a previous study. This project enabled the documentation of N'Kisi's communicative and telepathic abilities in the context of this bonded relationship, for various studies.
METHODS:
A new camera and audio set-up was acquired and installed to document N’Kisi’s speech, after testing and
trouble-shooting a range of equipment and software. New procedures for data acquisition and recording were
devised, tested, improved, and implemented, and further research protocols were refined and prepared. An ongoing program of filming was then carried out.
RESULTS:
Research in interspecies communication and documentation of the language use and telepathic abilities of
the parrot N'Kisi has continued. There have been more breakthroughs in N’Kisi’s language skills and progress in various research studies. During the project term his contextual vocabulary increased from 1025 to 1286 words. He also created original sentences with complex grammatical structure. An extensive selection was captured with our new system, along with many notable inciden ts and possible spontaneous telepathy, which we are working to transcribe and analyze.
CONCLUSIONS:
While N'Kisi’s rate of learning language has been fairly stable, possible telepathic incidence is more variable. A preparatory analysis of incidents logged the first year showed it had declined, and was not sufficiently robust at this time for more controlled studies. However, a comprehensive analysis of spontaneous incidents was
undertaken. 16 categories of potential telepathic response based on the type of stimulus were analyzed to study notable patterns. N'Kisi’s utterances were also catalogued and analyzed by linguistic and cognitive criteria.
